The question is, could more deals be on the horizon . What it all means for the former president. Also, the joint Chief Chairman did not mince words in his retirement today, calling trump a wannabe dictator, without naming him. From her Vice President , mike pence, is here to respond to that in moments. I am katelyn collins, and this is the source. The u. S. Is on the brink of a Government Shutdown tonight with really no plan and site. With all the infighting, all of the f bombs, all the votes that have been happening and also not happening on capitol hill, right now there is still no deal to keep the government open after tomorrow at midnight. How speaker, Kevin Mccarthys own conference saying his last ditch plan earlier today, and tonight he emerged with this message for the senate. I think we have a clean one without ukraine we could probably be able to move that through. I think if the senate puts ukraine on there and focus is ukraine over america i think that could cause real problems. Of course, the keyword there is probably. So far the far right of mccarthys party has not relented. They have been blocking him at every turn. And the process of a shutdown and what it means for regular americans, some of whom, unlike members of congress, made this their paycheck last night, Marjorie Taylor green said this. I promise you, most americans arent too worried about the government shutting down, which is a serious problem, but this is because democrats shutdown the country. Of course, there is a real life impact. Millions of federal employees wont get paid. On top of 1 million activeduty troops. Those who rely on Food Assistance may not have access to it. There could also be serious disruptions to air travel, with flights delayed, completely canceled. The ramifications can be spread far and wide. Lets get straight to the source tonight with the former Vice President and current 2024 president ial candidate, mike pence. Vista Vice President , thank you for being here. We appear to be just 24 hours away from a Government Shutdown. You believe that it is worth shutting the government down for these demands from the lawmakers on the far right . Will the party be any better off after a shutdown happens . Well, first, let me say we have a debt in this country now the size of our nations economy for the First Time Since world war ii, and i welcome efforts by republicans in the house and the senate to take a stand for fiscal responsibility, but, you know, i have been through one of these Government Shutdowns during our administration. Ive been through a few, back when i was a member of congress, and, you know, katelyn, i am confident that they will sort through it, but what is disappointing to me, and i think, millions of americans is that all of the arguments that will lead to the shutdown and may have the Government Shutdown in terms of nonessential workers and programs for some days or even weeks, as we saw in the past, at the end of the day, we are still not talking about the primary causes of the National Debt and i do believe that the time has come for a select leadership to the white house and bring common sense reforms to the Entitlement Program that are 70 of the federal budget. We are striving for a Government Shutdown that only touches 10 of the federal budget. And i think it is come to put our nation back on a path of fiscal solvency. Joe bidens policy is in solvency. He wont even talk about entitlement reform. And in all fairness, president trumps policy is identical to joe bidens id be willing to talk about it, and take them on it if i am president of the United States we will bring those reforms forward for younger americans and put Social Security and medicare back on a Solid Foundation as well. Yeah, i know that is something youve criticized both of those leaders before before. But when it comes to these negotiations happening right now, we just heard from Speaker Mccarthy if you moments ago, saying the senate needs to drop ukraine funding from its plan in order for it to pass the house. I mean, youve heard from senator mcconnell, who says he believes there is nos excuse for congress not to support more aid to ukraine. You believe that Speaker Mccarthy is wrong here . Welcome i think you know, katelyn, i have been one of the strongest voices in the republican field for continuing to provide Ukrainian Military with the support they need to defeat and repel the russian invasion. I think, frankly, i think any faltering support among republicans is more a reflection of the fact that joe biden has done a terrible job explaining what our National Interest is. We hear these gauzy speeches about democracy in the world, when i believe that giving Ukrainian Military what they need to defeat that russian invasion is in our National Interest, because i have no doubt if Vladimir Putin overruns ukraine it will not be long before he crosses a border of a nato country that our soldiers will be required to go and fight. And so i believe in that old reagan doctrine that if you are willing to fight the communists in your country we will give you the means to fight him there so we dont have to fight them. So i stand strongly for the principal. It is important, with accountability, not a blank check, but it is important that the United States continue to provide Ukrainian Military what they need and i am hopeful as they move forward in resolving this budget impasse, that some level of funding will be able to continue to support ukraines effort against the russian invasion. Yeah, i heard that comment about a blank check also on the debate stage on wednesday night people, like governor, ron desantis. I dont know anyone who is advocating for a blank check for ukraine, but you have a ton of specifics from your fellow 2024 republican candidates on the ones who dont advocate for more funding for ukraine, as far as how to resolve this on wednesday night. What did you make of that . Yeah, i mean i, you know, i heard i heard ron desantis say he is going to end the war, never said how hes going to end the war. Donald trump says he will end the war in a day, and, you know, the only way you could end the ukraine war in a day is if you gave Vladimir Putin everything he wants. And that actually is what the Back Ramaswamy is proposing to let him keep what he has grabbed with his brutal and unconscionable invasion and then promise him that ukraine will never be in nato. Look, there is no substitute for American Leadership on The World Stage. This is one of those moments that i believe America Needs to continue to exercise our role as leaders of the free world, marshall our allies in the west to do even more than they have done before. Because as i said in that same debate it got a little sporty and got a little loud. Boy, if Vladimir Putin rolls over ukraine, and we allow it to happen, that will give a green light to she jean ping and the Communist Party to roll into taiwan. I think the best way forward for peace on The World Stage is to continue to provide american support, American Leadership, as ukraine fights for their territory and sovereignty. Yeah, that is one word for it. Today in washington, general mark millie and the joint chiefs of staff, he made this comment in his parting remarks from his role. We dont take an oath to a country. We dont take an oath to a tribe. We dont take an oath to a religion. We dont take an oath to aching. Or a queen. Or a tyrant or a dictator. We dont take an oath to a wannabe dictator. We take an oath to the constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that, as america we are willing to die to protect it. It was quite clear who he was talking about there. What was your reaction to that moment . Well, look, i havent agreed with every decision that the chairman of the joint chiefs has made in the last two years with a lot of the woke politics that have made their way into the pentagon, but i expect all of that is coming out of the biden white house. And i am grateful for General Millies long career of service in the uniform of the United States. Katelyn, i dont know if who he was referring to there, but i must tell you that Donald Trumps recent comments regarding the general were inexcusable. And you think of General Millies incredible years of service in the uniform of the United States to make the kind of statements the former president made are just unacceptable. But it is one of the reasons why i everywhere i go across the country, and i think it might be a reflection of the way i tried to carry myself over my career, people come up to me and they thanked me for commitment of stability. They i think the American People long for us to restore a threshold of civility and move past this season of personal affective that has affected our politics for a whole lot longer than during the years of our ministration. Yeah, but we saw it its been a while around for a while, katelyn, its been around for a while, and i think the American People want to see that. We saw at the forefront, it was very clear he was talking about former president trump. You agree that donald trump is a wannabe dictator . Well, what i agree with is what General Millie said about the oath that men and women in uniform take. You know . My son is a captain of the marine corps, my soninlaw is a lieutenant of the United States navy, and katelyn, as i recounted in my book, in the days leading up to january 6th, two and half years ago, my son, the marine, looked at me at one point and said dad, you take the same oath i take, and that is to support the federal constitution of the United States. But you were closer i did my duty that day. I cant confirm or comment on who General Millie was referring to, but i can affirm his eloquent reference to the men and women who serve in the uniform of the United States. They, and throughout the history of this country clearly i will just say clearly, mr. Vice president , clearly trump thought he was referring to him, because he responded to that after calling General Millie a more on, adding that the man he picked to be defense secretary, he called him a quote woke fool. This is after what you referenced there, trump replied that General Millie should be executed for treason. Are those comments Beyond The Pale in your view . Well, as i said, his earlier comments, regarding General Millie were inexcusable. And really had no place in the public debate. I think it is one of the reasons why, despite what some of the National Polls may show i think republican primary voters know that we need new leadership, not just in the white house, but in the Republican Party, i will be back in iowa first thing in the morning and we will continue to take our case to the commitment of that broadbased Conservative Agenda that has defined our movement for years. But also, i was inspired by Ronald Reagan to become a republican and it was his Conservative Agenda, it was his optimism, and it was his civility, i think that made it possible for him to lead an administration. You talk about stability. That will change the world. You talk about civility at length and you say Republican Voters know, but do they . Lately he has called for the Parent Company of a news network to be investigated for treason. He is vowing to seek retribution if you wins. He says, quite blatantly, that he will go after and target his political opponents. I mean, with comments like that you believe he is a threat if he returns to the oval office . Look, i you know, i spent four years trying to explain Donald Trumps words, and im out of that business now for katelyn. What i can tell you you know him better than anyone else. Everywhere i go, Republican Voters believe that joe biden has weekend this country at home and abroad. I mean, we are struggling in this economy. We have the worst Border Crisis in american history. A disastrous withdrawal from afghanistan. With all due respect this isnt about President Biden, its about the american front runner, mr. Vice president. Well, i lips as i hear you, and i know you all like to focus on those National Polls. Im just telling you, what is happening on the ground is a lot more dynamic than it looks in the day in and day out pulling that you might see. I mean, i am convinced that well more than half of the republican primary voters know that we need a change, and im going to continue to work my heart out to earn the right to be our standardbearer and carry some victory. One of the polls i really like, katelyn said that it had me beating joe biden 5246 by the widest margin of others in the field. And so we will continue to carry that message. Im very confident in republican primary voters, caucus goers in iowa ive heard you say that before, but i mean, it is not just one cherry picked pole or Something Like that. The polls wrongfully show that trump is ahead, and he is making comments like that accusing the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, accusing him of committing treason. Today he was making light of an attack on a prominent political figures spouse in california, obviously warmer speaker pelosis husband. With those comments, saying that news network should be investigated for treason, is that someone who you believe is unfit to be back in the oval office . Is it a threat to the United States if he is out there . Well, im running for president of the United States, because i believe in our party and our country and leadership. And ive been very clear about that. And but no republicans really directly criticize and i think thats what stands out to people when they watch the debate stage on monday night. Is these thinly veiled criticisms of donald trump. No one is criticizing what he has been making. If you are wind the tape, you are not the first person ive spoken to about General Millie. I have been very critical of Donald Trumps plan to pass a tax on all imports in the United States of america. And of course i said by the time i announced president , no one who is president of the United States i will continue to speak about that. But i will tell you, republican and primary voters are less focused on the field of republican candidates in the former president , as they are on the disastrous policies of the Biden Administration case. But as this continues to go forward in New Hampshire after that i think they will continue to focus, dial in and im more convinced than ever that republican primary voters know that donald trump had his time, but joe biden doesnt even know what time it is. I just think you are notable you are former boss and someone you know very well. Say again . You what was your question . I just think i understand that your focus is on President Biden, but to actually run against President Biden if donald trump is far and away the front runner, i just think it is notable that you are not specifically addressing these comments on going after News Networks for investigating for treason. Going after his political opponents. Katelyn, katelyn if i addressed everything donald trump said every day i will talk about nothing else. As i said, i have already addressed in previous interviews my concern about the comments about General Millie. Also, i went up to New Hampshire couple of weeks ago and i said we have come to a republican time for choosing. You know, i joined the Republican Party, because i was drawn to the party, by Ronald Reagan and an agenda of American Leadership in the world, strong defense. Limited government. Less taxes traditional moral values, but i see donald trump and some of those imitators in this race literally walking away from that agenda and embracing a populism on more to conservative principles. I mean, think about it for a second. Where we stood with our allies and stood up to our enemies, i mean donald trump and others in the field are embracing this policy of appeasement, and isolationism that is growing in our party. Where we cut taxes, as i just said, donald trump is advocating what could be one of the largest Tax Increases in history, and he wont even talk about dealing with the National Debt. And finally on the right to life, we had a prolife administration, the judges that give America A New Beginning for life, the question of abortion in the United States and the American People, now donald trump has taken to blaming the overturning of Roe Versus Wade to the loss couple of years ago and that a pro life bill protects unborn babies, when a heartbeat is detected. He described that as a terrible mistake. Those are real departures from the agenda that we governed under and the agenda that really has defined the Republican Party for decades. And i want people to know that if i am president of the United States im going to lead our country back to security and prosperity on that broadbased Conservative Agenda. Former Vice President , mike pence, we will talk about his positions, but not those comments specifically, but thank you for your time tonight thank you for joining us, Vice President , mike pence. Thank you, katelyn. We also have some breaking news justin, regarding special counsel, jack smiths investigation and prosecuteds requests for a limited gag order for president , donald trump. But first, major news out of Georgia Tonight where Donald Trumps codefendants have just pleaded guilty in the election interference case. Breaking news tonight with a brandnew filing, justin from special counsel, jack smith, in a fight that is playing out right now in these court filings, over a partial Gag Order Request for donald trump in the election interference case. All of this has to do with trumps own words, and jack smith coding trumps quotes that we just talked about with former Vice President , mike pence about, with former millie. Saying that he committed treason. And had to be executed. Of course, millie had to be a witness in one or both of federal trumps cases. We know he has spoken to investigators at least once, and in this filing, smith notes that millie is a known witness. And as we reported back in may, we spoke with those investigators that had to do with the classified documents, but also jumps actions at large. This time in the georgia case we had the first guilty plea in any of trumps criminal cases. This is for scott hall. The Bail Bondsman accused of plotting with Sidney Powell to breach Election Equipment in the state of georgia, but he has now agreed to flip, to testify for the prosecution in that case. For more on all of these developers that are coming in tonight, even the last minute ones, we have cnn legal analyst with us. I want to start with you, kelly, because this is just, truly moments before we came on air that we got this filing from jack smith and this fight playing out over the gag order. He is using trumps own words against him. Hes using these attacks more urgent and that they need this gag order. You think this makes it more likely . Oh, for sure, katelyn, i think Donald Trumps statements are, and should be exhibit a in this request for a gag order. If you look at the dojs original gag order from earlier this week. It is actually quite overbroad in my view. They ask for a gag order preventing donald trump from saying anything quote, disparaging about, essentially any parties in the case. Hes allowed to say disparaging things. He can say disparaging things about a judge or prosecutor. They have to have thick skin, but heres where the line is. You cannot make a statement that crosses over from disparaging into a threat against a known witness and i think the statement you made about mark millie satisfied both of those Letter Criteria and it is a perfect example of why the judge should issue a limited gag order. Yeah, and he is attacking millie calling him a more on, since that filing happened. But i want to ask you about the other development, because this could be just as significant when it comes to what is happening in georgia. This is part of this alleged conspiracy there, scott hall is one of the first people to turn himself in. He is accused of being in cahoots with Sidney Powell on breaching Voting Machines him and now we have learned about this. How big of a victory is this for the District Attorneys Office in this case . I think it is a step forward from there. Obviously the District Attorney is going to be pleased any time that they are able to resolve any of the defendants, with a guilty plea. It keeps them from having to go to trial in that particular case. It is a win. Now, notably, this individual who looks like he has four misdemeanors, doesnt look like he will serve any jail time, and he will testify against some of the other witnesses. But it does, i think, also highlight that each of these defendants, because he had charged so many people in this case, each of these defendants is really differently situated. So, the case against the former president and some of those closest to him is different than individuals, like mr. Hall, who has two misdemeanors. Yeah, but ellie, what is your question when you see this . He is taking that plea deal, getting location for misdemeanors. Do you expect he is the first of many to potentially take this route here . I do, katelyn. This is how prosecutors build cases. You flip one person, you hope to flip that person of the chain to the next person that is really two of the defendants here who should be particularly worried about scotts cooperation. First, as you said in the intro, Sidney Powell, because she is charged along with scott hall in that scheme to hack into or access without permission the Voting Systems done in coffee county, but also Jeffrey Clark, the doj official who lost his removal, having a very bad day, because scott had a one hour long conversation with Jeffrey Clark on January 2nd Of 2021 and now prosecutors are going to know all about what was said during that. So this is a very big step forward for prosecutors. That is a very good point, and something to watch closely. Thank you for joining me on this friday night. Thanks, katelyn. Also tonight, as we look at this, a fixture of the senate is gone. Democrat, dianne feinstein, casting her final vote yesterday for passing away at the age of 90. Home of the xfinity 10g network. Tonight, from washington to california, people are mourning the loss of a political giant. Senator, dianne feinstein, the longestserving woman in Senate History died at her dc home at the age of 90. She cast her last foe just yesterday. And one of her death prompted a Moment Of Silence and emotion from the Senate Minority leader chuck schumer. So, today we grieve. We look at that desk and we know what we have lost. There was one description of the late senator that you heard repeatedly today, trailblazer. Feinstein broker first barrier when she became the first woman mayor of san francisco, a bittersweet milestone that was born out of tragedy. The assassination of george muskogee, and supervisor, harvey milk, the first openly elected official in the state of california. I walked down the line of supervisors offices and found harvey no, but my finger and a bullet hole, trying to get a pulse. It was the first person i had ever seen shot to death. And that began the saga. I became mayor as a product of assassination. Of the mayor being killed, and the first openly public official being killed by a friend and colleague of mine. That tragedy went on to define her Battle For Gun Control and the passing of the Assault Weapons ban in 1994, which, of course, she never stopped fighting for it. And she never let Glass Ceiling stop it either. She became californias first woman elected to the senate in 1992. Her run was sparked by her anger, while watching the Confirmation Hearings of Justice Clarence thomas. What did i see . But an allmale Senate Judiciary committee grilling anita hill, and it was not nice. And it was not what one would like to see. And that was my incentive to run in 1992. Tonight, her colleagues are recalling her passion for service, or great, her grace, her integrity. The first chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence committee. She would report on the cias Torture Program in 9 11. In defiance of National Security officials and president obama. History will judge us by our commitment to a just society, governed by law, and the willingness to face an ugly truth them and say never again. There may never be the right time to release this report, but this report is too important to shelve indefinitely. That report on how the cia detained and interrogated suspected terrorists is a big part of her legacy and the lead investigator for that report, daniel jones is with me now. And i am so grateful you are with me here to talk about that massive part of her legacy. But first, given the work that you did for her i want to get your reaction to her passing tonight. Well, thank you so much for having me. It is an honor to speak about Senator Feinsteins legacy. She was a trailblazer and a leader. That report, which was so important to our country to make sure we dont engage in those activities again simply wouldnt have happened without Senator Feinstein. Yeah, it is such a defining aspect of that. And you were talking about how it wouldnt have happened without her. It pitted her against two different president s from two different parties. How significant, in your view, is the role she played in a Public Accounting of the cias conduct . Well, as people know, Senator Feinstein was one of the biggest supporters of the Intelligence Community come of the department of defense. She is often known as one of the big defenders of controversial programs. So, she was uniquely positioned to take on the Oversight Program that looked at the cias interrogation and Torture Tactics post 9 11. She was a real consensus builder, and she demanded from all of us on the Investigations Team that we look at these facts as we uncovered them and documented them in a way that was extremely bipartisan extremely approached in a very cold and captivating position where its like every fact that we had we had to have footnotes, and as you know that report was 6700 pages and had 38,000 footnotes, and it found basically three things. One is that the cias torture is ineffective and didnt produce the intelligence the cia said. Two, the cia lied, the bush administration, obama administration, and three, they found that it was massively mismanaged, and as you know, she went up against both the bush and obama administrations to get that released finally released, or executive pages of it released. Yeah, and she felt that the redactions were worth actually what was able to get out there. She faced some objections about this at the time. The fbi, dhs, they were warning Law Enforcement agencies to be on heightened alert, in light of that report. And she was talking to my colleague, wolf blitzer, about that at the time and defending it. Listen to this. Was it worth it to release this report today . If, in fact, american lives were the diplomats, more military personnel, civilians, will be in danger . Look. There is no perfect time to release this report. This began 12 years ago. There have been attacks without this report coming out. This doesnt mean that we shouldnt clean our house and i think john mccain said it very well of what america is all about. We admit our mistakes. We commit ourselves to never let these mistakes never happen again. Obviously mccains support was so critical at that time. She had not gotten this released what you think the u. S. Would be . Well, i dont think we would have the facts on the table as we had them. Dianne feinstein did not think our country was perfect, but she thought what made it great was our ability to shine a flashlight on our problems and correct them and make sure they dont happen ever again. And again, that report would not exist without her steadfast leadership. It would not exist without her leadership. Your work on that as well, daniel jones. Thank you for joining us on such a big part of her legacy tonight. Thank you, my pleasure. And we are life tonight also on capitol hill, as President Biden is laying out the sticks of what is going to happen if the clock strikes midnight tomorrow with still no funding deal insight. We just have a little over 24 hours before the government is set to shut down. Tonight, Speaker Mccarthy is pushing things off to the senate after he failed earlier today to get republicans and the house to pass anything that could potentially keep the government open. Melanie is live on capitol hill tonight. Melanie, what is happening . Is there any deal being formed . Are we any closer than we were 24 hours ago getting any kind of funding bill . No. House republicans are scrambling to come up with a plan and avoid a Government Shutdown, even after they huddled for nearly 2 hours tonight at the capitol to talk about their very limited options. So, there is still no consensus on what, if anything, they are going to bring to the house floor tomorrow. But speaker, Kevin Mccarthy did emerge from that meeting, saying he would be open to a more simple, stopgap bill, as long as it doesnt include money for ukraine, and that is a different posture for mccarthy who, up until this point said any bill to fund the government needs to approve Border Security provision. After his efforts to work with republicans have come up short. And that failure to rally around a gop plan has created some tension in the ranks. Lets take a listen. We are the governing majority. This is what we are supposed to do as a governing majority. We are supposed to lead. And it is kind of hard to lead, when you have got a significant number of people that they are on the wrong snap count when you call the play. So that is where we are. They killed the most conservative position we could take. And then called themselves the real conservatives, which is like, make that makes sense. We were promised 12 appropriations bills, we should have stayed here in august. I didnt set the calendar, someone else did. Now, the senate will take a procedural vote tomorrow on a bipartisan plan to fund the government which does include ukraine money, but they cannot vote on final passage until potentially as late as monday. The bottom line here is that there still no clear plan to avoid a Government Shutdown which is not just 24 hours a away. It seems like republicans are confused about what republicans are doing here. Mccarthy is now saying i will take this but not that. I mean, that doesnt seem like that is going to answer the request from the hardliners, who say they dont want any shortterm bill to happen. Well, the reason why there is so much confusion is because Heaven Mccarthy himself has floated a number of different things. They are trying to do a count tonight really take a Temperature Check and see where republicans are, but thats the bottom line here. Theres a lot of confusion and tomorrow is the last day before they have a government funding deadline. Its pretty clear what will happen. For now, melanie, thank you. For a quarter of the century, the family of the icon, tupac should occur has been waiting for justice. Today, a suspect known custody. The story, next. Has been charged with murder. And in his own words, it led to this moment tonight. Its a cultural government is a cultural moment, this is a long awaited verdict. Its not like the vegas cops. Sometimes you put out the zeitgeist. We are a little embarrassed, i think it is a long time coming. I think its a fantastic day for the family. So thats the question people had when they saw this today, why now . Why did it take this long if this is who it was . I think, you know, you guys are doing a great job. I dont think biggest pd is very press. Weve been bragging about this for years. He had a documentary, he had a book. Its not just a guy passing by with a gun and not being arrested. Cops were in bed with this guy. He turned down another case and made a deal. So this is something people talk about all the time, a point of cultural fascination. What does it mean about the Community Overall . This is now something brought to light. You still talk about him at this level, this guy was a cultural revolutionary. These are songs about his mother, as a human being. My kids, 18yearold twins, for them it represents emotional freedom, willingness to break outside of the bounds. I think he was a revolutionary. Today, shout out to his brother, his sister. They deserve this day. What does a moment like this mean for them after 27 years . Ive been covering this case since the day i was at the hospital after being shot. Imagine your Family Member was killed and you knew the guys were still free . For me it is a moment of closure. You want somebody arrested. The other gentlemen in the car are deceased. This is the last chance for las vegas to make up for lost time. For them hopefully it means some closure. Imagine what to pack tupac, shout out to you, wish you were here. Im glad you got justice today, my brother. It is one of the heartbreaking parts. I never thought the biggest pd wanted to talk about this. I dont think he was on the list. I think the pressure from the public, the media, the new documents, what weve done on fox, i think it was time. I think its right. Every american deserves justice. Dont you want your kids to have justice if they were murdered in a public place . Im glad that justice is finally here. Again, i wish you would have seen this day as a mother, rest in peace to your son. Thank you for joining us night, we are grateful for you.
