One day until the government runs out of funding and theres no clear path to a solutions. A lastditch measure failed in the house. 21 republicans crossed over to vote with democrats, eeb House Republican leaders say they are in the dark about where to go from here. Its up to the speak er. Its not including active duty troops or any of their families. On average, federal workers earn between 55,000 and 65,000 a year. Average pay for an Army Staff Sergeant with 8 years experience, 48,500 a year. Most of these folks cannot afford to miss a payday. Perhaps this could be lost on the average member of congress, who makes 174,000 per year, and who will, by the way, continue to be paid during the shutdown. So this will not impact their wallets and their purses, even if they are not doing their jobs. And many of the others are expected to keep doing theirs. The longer this shutdown lasts, the more were all going to feel the impacts. Tsa agents, air Traffic Controllers might stop showing up to work. So perhaps you shouldnt get too attached to any flight plans you have. Fda food safety inspections might be disrupted to enjoy those hot dogs while you can. Manu raju is on capitol hill, where time to avoid a shutdown is running out. Kevin mccarthy meeting with House Republicans Behind Closed Doors right behind you. What is he telling them . Is there any sort of plan . This is, after all, his job. And in no small part, his fault. Reporter he is telling his colleague, im told from people in the room, there are no good options left. He has not said what his preferred plan is. Thats the big question. Im told he laid out several ways it can go. They can move forward on a plan to keep the government open, the same plan that failed just this afternoon when 21 House Republicans joined with democrats to sink from measure from concerns that the spend lg cutting were not enough. He said they can simply extend current funding with no provisions attached dare democrats to vote against it. Thats something that a lot of republicans wont accept over here. He also accept ed that they can sepp the senate plan, which he said he opposes because of the inclusion in ukraine aid and noninclusion in Border Security money. This comes as the tension was palpable among some of the republicans in the aftermath of that failed vote. Finger pointing among some of the more moderate members against hard liners who brought that down. They killed the most conservative position we could take. And then called themselves the real conservatives, which is like make that make sense. Theres one person to blame for any potential Government Shutdown and thats matt gaetz. Will not pass a resolution on terms that continue americas decline. So then the question is, what is next . The senate is still moving along bipartisan lines to try to get a bill through, but that may not be out of that chamber until potentially monday leaving it a couple days after the Government Shutdown deadline and the House Speaker not embracing that plan. A lot of uncertainty and expectation that the government will shut down over divisions among republicans, not just in the house gop, but senate gop, as the shutdown, if it happens, it could extend for some time. The only question is how long . And neither Kevin Mccarthy nor matt gaetz, who are at odds, neither is proposing anything that could get through the senate and be signed by President Biden. Right . Theres no question about it. The bill that would have went, if it were approved in the house, it would have been r rejected by the senate. So therein lies the problem for speaker mccarthy. If you were to move to cut a deal, that threat to push him out of the speakership continues to linger over him. Something that he fully recognizes. All could play out. All of this was predictable. Five days ago, and maybe you were just being kind, you said a Government Shutdown was not a fore gone conclusion. And you did not think we would get to the point of a shutdown. Where are you today . Thank you very much for having me. Five days ago, it was not a fore gone conclusion. Even at the moment, it does not have to be. The fact of the matter is, i think the senate is putting together a very good plan that if the speaker were to sit down with the democratic leader hakeem jeffries, and im sure hes got 150, 160 people in his conference, i think from the vote today, there was 98 or 9d 9 votes that wanted to keep this government open. And lets do a bipartisan piece of legislation. We can do that. All he has to do is put the country above his politics. His politics dictate that hes got to get jerked around by 15 to 20 people, and the country dictates that we need to keep people working, keep people safe, keep this country moving forward. But the problem is you know is that mccarthy agreed, as part of the condition of him becoming speaker, to one vote for a motion to vacate on the floor of the house, mean ing matt gaetz, and hes threatened this many times, can go to the floor and offer a motion to vacate and he needs 218 votes to keep his job as speaker. He might not have them. Would democrat dots that . Would you do that . There are circumstances in which i i could vote for him to maintain his speakership. A lot depends upon whether or not hes willing to put what the senate is doing on the floor. They have marked up to the agreement. We had an agreement back in the spring. He knows the agreement. He know it is. And the senate has been adhering to that agreement. The house is refusing. So put the senate bill on the floor. Take care of ukraine. Do what is necessary to protect people with these disasters that we need to face up to these wildfires, et cetera. And i do believe the senate is amenable to doing something about Border Security. But what we must do is keep people safe, keep travel going. We cannot close down our airports, and we cannot subject travelers to unsafe conditions. And we should keep federal employees happy. Keep them in a positive way. So they can do their jobs and the country can continue to move forward. Thats not a hard thing for him to do. But he needs to sut down with Hakeem Jeffreys and hmer out those agreements. Politico is reporting that matt gaetz is reaching out to House Democrats to solicit their help to oust mccarthy from the speakership. I guess hes reaching out to people in the progressive caucus. I assume you have not heard from him. But what would you say to your fellow democrats who are working with gaetz, to get rid of mccar thu. Id like to know what it is he thinks well get ting out of getting rid of mccar thi. What do we get for that . I would much rather us look at what the country needs, lets lock at whether or not we can do a bipartisan continuing resolution. If not a bipartisan funded bill for the next congress. And let that be our north star. Not whether or not we protect his politics. Whether or not we protect the people of the country. So if youre going to do something in a bipartisan way, let it be doing what the people need rather than what the politics of matt gaetz dictate. Hes being political. And no democrat, conservative or moderate or liberal or progressive, were not going to play that game. I dont think youll get anybody on our side to play with him. I have interacted with her on more than one occasion. I always found her to be a great person to work with. A perp of honor. I remember how she got into politic ticks. Those days in california and the kind of things she worked on were things that were near and dear to me. That kind of stuff. She was just a great person for california and for the nation as well. The first trump codefendant to plead guilty in the Georgia Election case has agreed to testify in any future proceedings and trials as part of this plea deal. His name is scott hall, and he pleaded to guilty to five count. He will avoid jail time. Donald trump and 17 others are facing charges in this case related to efforts to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state and steal georgias electoral votes. Joining us is Katelyn Polantz and jessica snider. Walk us through the details of the plea deal. The first guilty plea in this georgia case and there will be more. This is the fist of many. He pleaded guilty to five misdemeanors all related to his interference with the Voting Systems in coffee county. That means he has to pay a fine. There will be five years of probation. He has to write a letter of apology, but crucially part of this plea deal is he agreed to testify truthfully in any proceedings related to this case, including trials. So that will inevitably make some of the other defendants think object what they need to do whether they need to plead guilty, agree to a plea deal with prosecutors, this is a Turning Point for sure pretty early on. And Fulton County prosecutors suggestaled they could offer plea deals to sidney powell, who is donald trump said she was cr crazy. And Kenneth Chesebro of wisconsin, the alleged master mind behind the fake electors scheme. What is the likelihood they might take those plea deals . So far, their attorneys are signaling they wont. They are digging in their heels. They are mounting this defense. Chesebros attorney said these charges need to be dropped. Thats the only way that were not going to trial here indicating they will not take a plea deal. But the developments today in georgia with scott hall, it really does begin to put the pressure on and the more defendants that agree to the plea deals, the more pressure. Were a few week was from chesebro and powell and the start of the trial. Theres not much time left. And former Justice Department official jeffrey clark, he was the one trump was thinking about appointing Temporary Acting Attorney General and was going to tell states to overturn the results. He wanted to move his case. He was denied that. Slar to what happened to mark med dose. Hes part of a line of people that are trying to do that. They wanted to get the case in a place that might be a little more friendly, which can he thought was federal court. Its not going to. Happen for him. Mark meadows has an appeal on the table where the federal system is going to look at whether he can move his case, but what were seeing happening here with mark meadows, before the trial judge asking for that and not getting that relief, with jeff clark and theres fake elector this is made a bid thats a long shot, with all of these people, were seeing the pieces of the trial in Fulton County, georgia, come into place. Theres going to be a trial set with Jury Selection to begin at the end of october. Thats the chesebro and powell trial. There are other defendants that have to make decisions, just like scott hall did today, because the cases arent getting split up in a lot of different ways. They are not getting moved into Different Court systems. So the reason that clark wasnt able to move his case today when the judge looked at it, it was that he didnt have any evidence to be able to make the claim that what he was doing was part of his job at the Justice Department to try to look into an election in georgia. He didnt present ims evidence to that. Even when his attorney tried to argue its plausible that donald trump told him to do these things as the president overseeing a man in the Justice Department in the administration, there was no evidence to that effect. And that will likely come up at trial. The judge really shot that down. He said this was no part of your job. Youre Assistant Attorney General and you should not have been doing this. It turns out regardless of what they think about the election that evidence actually matters. It does. Imagine that. Thank you so much. This is two days after he s skipped out of sharing the stage with seven of his rivals at the second republican debate. Trump isnt the only president ial candidate there. Tim scott, ron desantis and Vivek Ramaswamy will also a attend. Er we are at the convention in anaheim, california, where President Trump is still giving the keynote address. It sounds like the speech is being received well, yes . Reporter he is still speaking. He has been going about 30 minutes or so. No doubt about it, you heard it from the applause, he is popular in this room. But lets zoom out and give you a bit of perspective on whats happening here in the state. The Republican Party statewide here in california is desperately seeking relevance in the next election. So the blast time republicans were able to elect someone statewide here in california, it was in 2006. If you look the at the voting data in this state from the secretary of state, the latest i could find just under half of all registered voters are democrats. 24 are republican, 23 are independent. So this room can cheer. It can applaud donald trump because he is a popular figure, no doubt. But for the Party Leaders who are looking for relevance to win statewide, there is some concern that they have to have independent, they have to have democrats if they want to win statewide. The state party is debating a a rule change on the distribution of delegates during the primary. What does that change about how it might affect the winner . So this is something that the state party has decided. So what the rule change is that anyone who is 50 plus 1, the previous was a breakdown by percentage of win. But now its going to be winner take all, if you are 50 plus 1. And that is 169 delegates. So certainly, moving up the calendar to super tuesday, having that high number of delegates available, it makes california very relevant,s especially this election for the republicans. And the other seven republican candidates vying to be an alternative to trump. He siaid, republican primary voters dont care about policy. What they want is a proven record of violence, Sexual Assault and financial fraud. Obviously, that is harsh and snarky, but it is hard to escape the fact that it looks very strongly as though donald trump will be the nominee. Nobody has voted yet, but polls suggest strongly as of now, it looks like donald trump is still heavily favored. You cannot emphasize enough how that rule change is going to help him with that. If he reaches that 50 threshold, thats a lot of d delegates hes winning. Theres a lot of enthusiasm for him right now. I spent a whole year and a half campaigning up and down the state of california. I got to see it firsthand. People really believe that he is the person who ought to carry the mantle forward. Even people who have doubts about the personal issues, they see him as a strong standard barer. So im not surprised to see 1700 in that ballroom today. I want to say thats three or four times more than ron desantis has attracted later today. A lot measure when tim scott is there. So theres a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of interest, notwithstanding what was pointed out in the tweet. You worked for trump in 2016. Polls indicate that nikki haley, the former ambassador and governor would beat joe biden decisively. And that every other candidate, its basically a margin of error race. And yet the party seems very committed, as of now, anything could change, to its a 1 in 10 chance trump does not get the nomination. I remember what you said. Shes smart. Shes the pollster. But why . When theres this alternative that is younger, a fresher face, and that according to data has a better chance of winning . People love donald trump. Social media, you go to rallies, you talk to people, you pull in the gas station, you get in an uber, the guy occupies everybodys conscientious. Im not sure why. Hes a minority of americans. In the party. Im not talking about america at large. He does up a a lot of time. Were going to get waxed in california. But winning these votes is important. And these are big numbers. Were getting a thousand people and we thought it was giant. Used to get small people in diners and trump has changed the political dialic because hes fighting for people. Hes fighting for average americans. Hes been a celebrity for decades. Dr. Oz. Is wildly popular celebrity and got crushed in the general election to a guy who wears shorts and a hoody to work. Many pennsylvanians wear shorts and hoodies. But when you look at california in that room, when you look at that room, its not just the numbers of potential voters. They are looking for money too, which is why the other candidates are there too. Thats going to be their ongoing challenge. How can they sustain the money that it takes to run for office when your margins are so wide. Is it really going to keep you going . How do you make up for that . Knowing that theres a limited pool of voters that you have to appeal to. I read this story and immediately wanted to know what you thought. Theres a Conservative Antitrump Group called win it back. Its been 6 million in iowa to try to damage trumps standing with Republican Voters. Ads such as this one. I would have to say that donald trump did a great job. I always supported him. I supported him in the 16 and in the 20 election, but i didnt like his response to covid. I thought he got led by the bureaucrats. Thats one approach. And thats kind of like an approach that desantis has take. They have tried a whole bunch of different approaches to go after him, trying to appeal to reallies and conservatives. The New York Times reports that this memo from this group says after more than 40 different antitrump tv ads, all attempts to undermine his conservative credentials on specific issues were ineffective. In fact, in at least one of them, his popularity went up. So 6 million is a lot of money. Its not working. Attempts to persuade Republican Voters that donald trump is not conservative, and therefore, you shouldnt vote for him have been dead on arrival. The wasnt message that had a chance to work was right after the midterms saying just like in that ad, start up with a guy that says i like donald trump. Im not hostile to trump voters. I am a trump voter. Im worried hes not the guy to win in 2024. There was a window when that could have worked. But now there are enough polls showing them neck and neck. I think the message that could have worked is the loser youre a loser. You lost in 18. We got killed in the midterms. You lost in 22. Youre going to lose in 24. You havent won. That would have been sticky. Heres where biden comes in. He jumps in in arizona at the Mccain Institute talking about his relationship with a republican, how they used to work democracy of old together. Hes selling a message of he won, and americas democracy is under threat. Every time somebody comes under indictment or decides to cut a plea deal,s thats something that appeals not only to democrats, but also to the vast majority of americans. 50 do not identify with a political party. You want to bring in the fact that robert f. Kennedy jr. , Who Is Run Ning against President Biden in the primary, he is now considering running as an independent. What do you think . Do you think that could have an effect . And would he hurt biden or trump . Were more likely to have a three or fourway race than a nontrump candidate as a republican nominee. If you look at whether its robert kennedy, you have this no labels candidate potentially that could be another possibility, and thats a more likely scenario. We can debate who they take share from, but if you have robert f. Kennedy and a candidate that was center right, then it becomes an interesting dialic. I looked at data. You would assume that rfk because hes doing poorly in polls, would maybe pull more Republican Voters. But the data i have seen suggests he pulls equally from both sides. His influence would be a little bit unclear. It doesnt benefit one side or another. Theres a lot going on today. You have likely seen the alerts about tupac murderer arrest. We knew about davis all the way back from his initial confession to Law Enforcement. We sat him down back in 2009, and he confessed to his role in the murder along with other cocons coconspirators. He had a proffer agreement, so we couldnt utilize that information that he was providing against him. But then he began to go out publicly boast about husband involvement in the murder, and that led to Law Enforcement in las vegas taking another look at his claims, and ultimately, hes talked himself right into skbral jail. So we have known about his confession since 2009. We knew about his involvement. Now its come to fruition because of all the public statements hes made. Are those statements enough . Does there need to be more evidence beyond those statements . Could they not be just explained away in a trial as false brag doesh doeshs . We substantiated during our original interview with him. We substantiated nearly every single thing he said during that interview. We knew it was a bonn fied confession. So hes essentially hung himself with this one. Its great to finally see this case come to a point where somebody is being held accountable for the murder. This Afternoon Police said the investigation was, quote, far from over. What is left to look into . What remain . We have to take him to trial, if he chooses to go to trial. So its going to be really interesting how they work this out legally. When you have the primary witness against the defendant, is the defendant himself. This is going to be very unique in the legal realm. How do you prosecute this . So im really looking forward to it. Its going to be intriguing. But essentially, we know that davis is The Last Man Standing for those that were responsible for tupacs murder. And its great to see the case finally get closed. Thee accused of violating policy, jake. Apparently somebody was arrested, they were brought to a police building, and inside this police building, they decided to do a search of him. When the search happened, officers used a taser to try to get the man to comply. At some point, something dropped from the mans body. What they didnt realize at the time is the taser actually activated body cameras that the officers were wearing. At some point, according to the chief of police, someone watched and saw they maybe violated policy. That body camera apparently was destroyed. In trying to destroy it, it wasnt connected to a server, so thats why four officers were arrested this morning in connection with this. When you think about this, you add the brave cave to this, people are astounded about what may have been going on in baton rouge. Theres been talk about nine separate administrative investigations, the fbi is looking into this, and theres a federal lawsuit. There was a grandmother who says she was had a Cavity Search and stripsearched after she had Prescription Drugs after being pulled over. Take a listen.
