The white house was grilled monday about biden potentially being seen as taking sides against the automakers. He is standing with the workers. We are not involved in negotiations. That is something for them to decide. So there are risks of being drawn into a major labor battle, but there are potential up sides. The path to the white house of course runs straight through that blue wall including states like michigan. And union voters could make all the difference in a close general election fight especially against the gop frontrunner donald trump who is planning to speak to Union Workers tomorrow as Counter Programming to the republican debate. Trumps decision to visited uaw workers play into your decision to go . Absolutely not. This is a decision to visited picket line paced off his own desire, this is what the president wanted to do, to stand with auto workers. Biden of course always painted himself as the most pro union president. This obviously is a move to try to solidify that image. What is going on in the white house behind the scenes . Absolutely as in conversations with white house officials ive had the past week, it has been clear they wanted an opportunity to send the president out to michigan or one of the other states where the workers are striking and a obviously trump did play a factor whether or not the white house will publically admit that. This is the likely general election matchup as you said, the election runs through these states. And biden wants to make it clear to the people in michigan and larger midwest and some of these autoworkers but more broadly the Labor Movement that he is their strongest ally. That Working Class Voters are key to turnout in these states. It is clear that they are going to show up and do something as you said that is unprecedented, becoming the first president according to historians to march on the picket line. The scene should be remarkable to see what biden says about workers but also about companies. Obviously this has Major Economic implications if the strike continues. And how bidens presence affects negotiations remains. And a lot of this has to do with the uaw leader shawn fain and part of why this invitation unfolded the way it did, the white house had planned to send a couple economical folks to potentially participate in negotiations or at least be on the ground there to be available. And shawn fain basically told them to pound sand, send the president instead to stand with us if you really want to do something for us. And they actually went along with it. And fain is withholding the uament with endorsement right now from biden. That historically has really been important for democratic candidates. I mean, how much is that weighing on the white houses thinking wanting to get their backing in a general election . I think youre right. Initially to Gene Sperling and also the acting Labor Secretary had said that they had plans to go out to some of the strikes to help coordinate some of the negotiations. And that backfired. And so now were at the place where the president is going out there themselves. I think the Union Endorsement is something that the president wants. Historically large labor unions have backed 2democrats. The president has already wracked up a number of key endorsements from labor unions. But i think it goes beyond The Union Brass Endorsing the president. Teachers unions and the like have stood up behind joe biden. But it is more about those Rank And File union members. You know, it is one thing to get the endorsement and say that you are backed by this group, but they have thousands of members and joe biden wants to lock in the support from those people and ensure that they show up to the polls. So this is also part of that effort, not just getting the top line endorsement but making inroads with those voters who ultimately are the ones who show up to the polls so that he can win michigan, wisconsin and states like that. Whether he is successful in doing that will go a long way. Weve seen sometimes contentious exchanges with Rank And File members over the years particularly as president as he visited Factory Floors in the past. How is he able to connect with the Union Workers today i think will be key in sort of signaling whether or not he is able to keep the support hes had from labor unions and what donald trump does when he heads there tomorrow. Yeah, those Rank And File members are absolutely and he did win them in michigan in 2020, important to point that out, but there was pretty significant support among the Rank And File for a republican candidate more than we often see. That of course at the time donald trump who has tried to personally identify with these people. Although democrats will be quick to point out that many of his policies undermines strength of unions. Didnt actually play particularly well domestically. And now were seeing marcos doing much better cozying up to the United States. And not just in a small way either. The United States is setting up bases there. There is an International Base for u. S. Forces there. So when we see the images of the philippines pushing back against china, that would have been in alliance with the United States. So we can read into this u. S. china tensions as well. And how important the philippines is playing into that as well as the other alliances that you were talking about there in the region. And this of course has been a critical part of u. S. Security in the pacific. You can go back to world war ii. And while i have you, i want to talk about something that is unfolding in your neck of the woods in london, in the uk, with Police Officers putting down their weapons. And i think for our american audience, i think it is important for us to also say that there are actually very few Police Officers compared to how things are here who carry weapons. They are highly trained, you know, segment of the police force over there. And it is very clear that the reason they are putting them down is something that they feel very strongly about. What has happened . Yeah, so just to explain that culture really, British Police do not carry guns, they think it encourages more guns on the streets. Only a very small part of them have these highly trained officers allowed to carry guns. What happened was one of these armed police shot an unarmed man and he has been charged with murder. And this is not necessarily a protest within the metropolitan police in london, but it is a huge amount of concern amongst them being expressed because they are concerned that in that split second decision, if they make a mistake, they will be charged for murder. So they handed in their licenses to carry these guns. And that was a big crisis for the metropolitan police because they didnt have enough armed police. They had to then ask the Special Forces to potentially step in if there is a terrorist situation because they didnt have the armed police. That is now largely resolved were told, but it does expose this massive problem and also a problem with the can culture frankly of the metropolitan police where a lot of the police on the front lines have a big issue with management, they dont trust them, they dont think that they will stick up for them. And this Racist Question should armed police be charged with murder, and it should him on be manslaughter if it was a mistake. And very different from what we deal with here in the United States. Just a few months ago speaker of the house and i agreed to spending levels of the government. Now a small group of extreme House Republicans, they dont want to live up to that deal. As you heard, biden very clear on who he blames for the looming government shutdown. Reality is Kevin Mccarthy is blaming the same set of people. How do you think this ends at this point . And i will my sources from what i can tell think that we are heading straight for a shutdown. Do your agree . Yeah, they do. And there is every reason to believe that. Right now what the house will work on today and what they are set to work on this week are bills that will do nothing to prevent a government shutdown. It is these four Spending Bills and they are just trying to get it on to the floor to be debated. They dont even know if they have the votes to pass these priorities that conservatives really want that are dead upon arrival in the senate and certainly at the white house. So really they are spinning their wheels trying to build up good will at this point all the while the clock keeps ticking. A great point. And speaking of the senate, im glad you raised that because as much as doesnt want to work with democrats in the house, our Goe Government is divided and whatever passes has to be bipartisan simply because of the reality that Democrats Trs Cont the senate. So were starting to get a sense of what the senate is trying to do to overt the catastrophe which sounds like may involve now passing something that is actually relatively clean, it might leave ukraine aid and Disaster Relief to the side and just keep the government open for 45 days. That could put mccarthy in a tough spot. How do you think this plays out between the two chambers in the final days this week before the potential shutdown . I wont venture a guess at this point. But certainly you are right that it would put mccarthy in a really tough spot. Even keeping the government funded for those 45 days with this clean continuing resolution. That said, it is quite striking that the senate is considering removing ukraine aid even for this short time. Primarily because the vast majority of senators believes that ukraine aid should be in. They are just wagering that they wont be able to get it through the house. This could get democratic and potentially some republican votes. And that always as you know puts Kevin Mccarthy in a really tough spot because he needs the majority of his conference to get this over the line. And were just not headed in that direction right now. And again this is Pis Puttin Mccarthy against the hardliners that he is trying to appease. Trying to give them what they want. They keep saying no. And on the other side, he has these moderates who are saying that well work with the democrats if we cant figure this out. That of course potentially puts the gavel at risk which is how we opened this. But i will say it is not clear that there is anybody except Kevin Mccarthy who could even get the gavel in these circumstances. I want to show you what ken buck had to say, congressman ken buck, when he was asked about this by my colleagues late yesterday afternoon. Take a look. Do you think Speaker Mccarthy will weather this . I do. And i dont think anybody wants this job. It is horrible. Herding cats is a difficult process and when you have cats with big egos in this building, it is very difficult do. I dont think anybody wants this job. Quite the endorsement. You could see it on mccarthys face there. He looks so much older than he did six months ago if were being completely candid. Right. I mean, and that has been the question. If not mccarthy, who. And sure there are folk on the hard right that will raise their hand, but they likely dont have the votes. We saw this in the 15 marathon votes earlier this year. So i guess he has that going for him that no one else wants the job. I think that that is really at the end of the day, you cant beat somebody with nobody. How many different contexts. President ial race, speaker ship, it applies across the board. But really yubd scores the continued problems that the Republican Party is having and the reality is that they have enormous consequences right now for so many americans. So this gun flap is a small example, but it is a reminder that even though the former president seems to be teflon with gop voters and seems to be on the glide path to the nomination, he is under indictment and if he is running against joe biden in a general election, he is going to be a candidate on trial. It is not something that i dont think that we are discussing every day and like i said, it was a small example here in this gun shop, but it says something really big. Yeah, i mean, it is not unusual for candidates to for president ial candidates especially in a republican primary to visit a gun shop. But it is in addition and it is new ground for the country, for a general election candidate to be facing indictment and have to juggle both trials and those indictments and the regular sort of requirements of campaigning. Those are going to be the two major obstacles that the former president is going to have to deal with should he get the nomination to be president of the United States in 2024. So the other thing that i want to kind of i want to try to make sure that we cover this with a certain degree of perspective, but i want to put up a graphic that we made that just has a couple of the things that donald trump has been out there saying in recent days on truth social. The first, he suggested that general milley, top u. S. General, should be executed. He argued that comcast, owner of nbc, should be probed for treason. He also called nikki haley a rival in the primary and his former u. N. Ambassador bird brain. These are things that we dont necessarily focus on that much the way we might have in previous campaigns. And i understand why. Right . But taken together, i think that they underscore again the nature of the campaign that he is currently running and the way that he thinks. And i think that it is just worth showing and reminding voters across the country that this is potentially one of their top two choices for president of the United States. And he has close to 100 Name Recognition or as much as any president ial candidate can have. And the truth is that most voters know what they are getting with donald trump. Poll after poll and polster after polster says there is a swathe of the Republican Party that he is just not going to move from donald trump. No matter if he buys a handgun illegally or calls another Candidate Birdbrain or anything else. And that is just the reality we live in right now. Yeah. And i do think one of the things on that Slide Worth High lighting and that is what he had to say about comcast and nbc news. He writes again he is upset with the coverage generally, but he writes the onesided and vicious coverage by nbc and particularly m isnt nbc should msnbc should be investigated for treason. This was enough to get the Biden Administration to respond. Actually i think it was the white house.
