It is now official, this summer is the hottest on record globally by huge margin. That is according to a report just released by copernicus Climate Change service. It found global averages were 0. 66 degrees celsius above average, in farenheit that is more than one degree warmer. This summer was the fifth warmest for europe and Sea Surface Temperatures have been record highs in the north application and globally. And the record heat continues across parts of the u. S. More than 15 million americans in texas, midwest and the northeast are under heat advisories today. In the northeast the heat will peak later in the day with some areas seeing some of the hottest temperatures they have had all summer. Parts of washington, d. C. And baltimore could hit 100 degrees for the first time in years. To discuss this, katie poe lants is here. Take us through the top lines of the report. It is clear that they are making drastic statements. These records have been set since 1940, so were talking nearly 100 years. And they are saying that temperatures, not just Air Temperature, but sea surface as well, have gotten up by a wide margin. And they are clear as to why this is happening. This is not something that is accidental. They are saying that it is manmade. Deputy direct to have the Copernicus Institute said this is happening because were missing Green House Gases and the evidence is overwhelming she says. And this is notable, weve been talking about the typhoon in asia, the Hurricane Idalia in the United States, and weve been talking about floods here in greece and europe, this is no coincidence that these extreme Weather Events are happening while the temperatures are going up and up and greece is a classic example. They had wildfires and now dealing with floods. And these are the same areas where the wildfires hit, they are now having floods as well and this is because the same influence, the same Weather Events that are happening are now impacting the floods as well. Areas raised to the ground, trees that used to be there are no longer there. There is nothing to protect, no barrier to stop this water. And notable one last thing on this Sea Surface Temperature, you may think that that is not something that were attracted by, this is Air Temperature that makes us feel hot and cold, but Sea Surface Temperature is very important because in the sea, in the Mediterranean Sea for this greece flood for example, when the storm reaches it, that is when it will start heating up and will get more and more powerful. The warmer the Sea Surface Temperature, the more it strengthens this Weather Event and in this case the fstorm tha they are fearing will turn into a medicane. It will have similar effects to a hurricane. And so these Weather Events are going to continue and certainly as far as greece is concerned, the next 24 to 48 hours are looking incredibly devastating and really worrying. The example of the Sea Surface Temperatures rising and its impact is but one instance of how we can see that increased extreme weather and increasing Global Temperatures is having a wider impact and worsening the Climate Crisis and making it more likely that Global Temperatures will continue to rise. Talk us through that cycle. Absolutely. So were seeing both extremes really. Were seeing also they mentioned that there is heavier rainfall in some areas of the world and drier climates in some areas. For example in central youre ro, there has been drier climates and also south america. That has led to the wildfires. These cycles continue and as the weather is heating up, as the temperatures are getting more and more extreme, the climate is getting more and more ravaged by this. And then the civilian impact, weve been covering it extensively, it is clear to be seen. And the Emergency Services become more and more strained as well. In greece, there is a village that has been absolutely devastated by the floods. There are reported fatalities already. And it also flooded the hospital. So the area that people are then seeking refuge is gets damaged as well. So the Rescue Services seek refuge and help also getting damage. And Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison for what the judge describes as his outsized role in the attack. Evan perez has more from washington. Reporter Enrique Tarrio former top leader of the proud boys right Wing Extremist Group was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for being leader of the group that helped lead the assault on the u. S. Capitol on january 6. The u. S. District judge Timothy Kelly said tarrio has not shown any remorse and the 22 years is longer of any member of the proud boys that have been sentenced and longest for any january 6 case. Tarrio wasnt at the capitol that day, he had been arrested days earlier and banned from being in the city. But prosecutors said he was in touch with members of the proud boys and he encouraged their attack. The judge said mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader, the ultimate person who organized, who was motivated by revolutionary zeal. The judge added what happened that day did not honor the founders. It was the kind of thing that they wrote the constitution to prevent. Tarrio was dressed in an orange jump suit and orange slipon sneakers. He leaned against the lectern in front of the courtroom and hung his head as the judge handed down his lengthy sentence and he apologized to Police Officers who were injured at the capitol, some of them by name. And he kept his composure except when his mother spoke to the court begging for the judge to give him a break. An attorney for tarrio signaled that the sentence would be appealed. Evan perez, cnn, washington. In alabama the fight over how congressional districts are divided could go before the u. S. Supreme court again. Alabama officials filed notice on tuesday that they will appeal a ruling from a federal court which said the states congressional map was no good because it failed to create a second majority black district as ordered back in june. The map has only one majority black district. Alabama attorney general Steven Marshall is vowing that the state will not back down. He insists that the map complies with the Voting Rights act and recent Supreme Court decision. Cnn spoke with an alabama democratic congresswoman about the controversy. The Supreme Court decision was pretty tight, 54, and kavanaugh was pretty clear in his position as well. I really hope that they will reject the stay immediately so we can continue with the process. I know that it will go on concurrently with the drawing of the maps, the Special Master has until September 25th to come up with three different maps. The problem is it was possible to draw two majority minority districts. In fact the Supreme Court had in its evidence by the plaintiffs attorneys 11 maps that showed that there was a way that you could have two majority minority districts. So the blatant disregard for the Supreme Courts edict as well as this three judge panel was really unacceptable and when i think about it, you know, it is also an insult to shows of us who know that they could do better. Police say these nighttime photos show cavalcante walking past trail cameras monday night. The photos confirm cavalcante has not changed his appearance but also that he has obtained a backpack, a Duffle Sling Type Pack and hooded sweat shirt. Images were captured at longwood garden, a sprawling site with more than 200 acres of gardens, meadows and trails adding to the already challenging terrain in the area. But in an effort to sort of alleviate those concern, mcconnells Office Released a letter from the capitol hill physician saying he did not suffer any stroke, no seizure, he does not have parkinsons disease and that his brain scans and other tests that were done suggest that he can continue to do his job. It doesnt mean that all senators are okay with what they have heard. Some want more answers including senator rand paul who is skeptical of what senator mcconnells office has said about lightheadedness contributing to this issue as well as senator Tommy Tuberville who is uncertain about whether mcconnell can continue in the job. Nevertheless in a positive sign from mcconnell, he does have sizable amount of republican support including from the Lee Republicans who could potentially succeed him, senators john thune, john cornyn, john barrasso, all telling me thus eveuesday eveni they continue to support senator mcconnell. What makes this important is as you see right there, the Islamic State member without a mask on walking down the hall, that is a person that would normally try to hide his face outside.
