The president is scheduled to depart for the g20 summit in india later this week. Meantime, this covid cases increase right across the United States, lab test indicate that the new corona virus variant maybe less contagious than previously thought. Vaccinated americans should have some protection against it. Scientists say the new be a 2. 6 variant is highly mutated and has been detected in 11 countries so far, that includes the United States. Two groups of scientists, one in china and one in sweden, have also reported the results of their analysis of that new variant. Doctor biden wants to know why she has it as well. Just to state the facts here, she is doing fine, she is 72 years old and in very good health. What can you tell us about any risks that those people, people that age might encounter one giving covid and if she should start a absolutely, what a way to start. Thats exactly what i was going to say. I really hope that she is on paxlovid because paxlovid has worked so well, it does reduce up to 90 of a risk of hospitalization and even higher with death. Now, with first lady biden, the good news is that, from what we know publicly, she is in pretty good health for 72 and so that also goes in her favor. But, i really hope that she is on paxlovid right now and, back to your other point at the beginning, masks in public. We dont see any masks anywhere, especially anywhere, let alone our politicians and other people in other areas. But people over 65 probably should be wearing a mask when theyre in public. You know, like everything about this virus, it continues to be debated whether or not the masks were affective. You have, i am sure that youve seen the most recent studies. What do you think . The major study that was produced was so flawed that, in the professional world we look at it and shake our heads. So the bottom line is masks work. We wear them in the health care study, i have been around literally Hundreds Of Thousands of positive covid people when im out in the field or working in the office, in with my staff, and we are able to keep our safe. Working in an intensive care unit, those people rely on masking. Now, the question is, are you wearing the right type of mask and are you wearing it appropriately . All of us have seen people wearing the mask and their nose is coming out or it is open on the sides, those dont work. Cloth masks dont work. But if youre wearing a good in 95, they significantly work. So, please still wear them. Again, more information that we all need. Should we be getting the next vaccine . Does it include this new variant . The good news is that it is not perhaps as a contagious as once thought . Yes, that is very important right now. Now, the good news that, in the Laboratory Studies that have been done with this type of virus and the mutation, as you alluded to, it has 35 different changes in the spike protein. Very significant. It does show, the early studies, that this vaccination is going to be effective. So, right now, we are back at square one. Anybody over the age of 65 should be getting it. All the nursing home residents should be getting it, anybody who is immune immunosuppression should be getting it. But the lines arent going to be that long when it comes out in a couple of weeks, and at the same time, please, ever to get your flu shot and adults now over 60 get the new are as a vaccination. It is an important time to prevent infection that will be happening. For sure, we are going to see increases in covid through the involved season, no doubt. Paula, this is what we know. Kim jongun may be meeting with Vladimir Putin in russia, according to the u. S. National security council. They are expected to discuss potential arms deals for russia, for russia to get more north korean weapons like Artillery Weapons like rockets to use against ukraine. The timing of this meeting is on clear. It was the New York Times that first reported about this Potential Meeting saying that came would travel from pyongyang to where he would be meeting with putin at a forum its had to kick off this weekend that would run from september the 10th. Now, it is a port city not far from north korea, it is also the city where it came and putin met for the first time and toast their Champagne Floods as you see on your screen back in 2019. Kim, when he made that journey, he did it on the famous armored green train. Now, as for this new, Potential Meeting, the times reports that in exchange for weapons, what north korea is seeking is advanced technology. A technology for satellites, for Nuclear Powered submarines, they are also seeking desperately needed food aid. Now, this Potential Meeting follows a recent visit by the Russian Defense minister to north korea that took place in july. It also comes after the u. S. Officials have said that the two countries are actively advancing their talks over another potential arms deal for russia and ukraine. Last, year the u. S. In north korea delivered rockets and missiles into russia for use by wagner forces, something that north korea has denied, but russia and north korea have been edging ever closer together. The Russian Defense minister now saying that joint Military Drills in north korea are currently being discussed. This is all in focus now after ukraines president dismissed Defense Minister oleksii reznikov, reznikov is not directly implicated in corruption scandals, but earlier this year president zelenskyy carried out a purge of other defense officials over scandals. What does it tell you, though, about the enduring problem that is corruption, remains a problem in ukraine, and what the president zelenskyy intends to do about it . We are not saying there is no corruption, we are saying there is corruption in ukraine and authorities must react to the public at band to root out corruption. So, what president zelenskyy is doing, hes responding to the will of the people who treat corruption as a security threat, even larger than the threat of russia on ukraine. And there were some scandals exposing corruption in the defense ministry, particularly in the procurement of food and other supplies for the army and this was not tolerated by the people of ukraine who are supporting our army. And so in response this demand walensky had to dismiss reznikov and appoint a new Minister Of Defense. Zelenskyy himself has a quite, in this war time, corruption, he is acquitted corruption with treason. Is that the way many ukrainians would interpret it as well . Well, it sounds very appealing and many ukrainians would share that statement that corruption is treason during wartime. However, if we want to embed this statements into the legal mechanisms they might not work because the devil is in the details. For the last eight years, a complex infrastructure of a plenty of corruption agencies. All of them were mentioned by Vladimir Putin in 2022 on the east but for the nation. He knows our anticorruption infrastructure better than any ukrainian and he failed to take over ukraine from inside just by implanting corruption into various political structures, as he did with belarus, and he had to invade ukraine with a conventional war. So, this anticorruption institutions, they perform well. We are tackling corruption, they just recently arrested in the head of the Supreme Court of ukraine due to ongoing investigations against top officials in ukraine. It remains that despite the war and largescale invasion, are anticorruption structures work, so we need to strengthen them instead of giving this easy solution. I think the question is going to be, for many, and hopefully ukraine will get to that point where funds for rebuilding our entering the country, not funds for war, but given the, you know, expectations from both nato and the eu, is it really realistic to have an Anti Corruption campaign during wartime like this, one that can endure and actually take root . It is even more than realistic, it is happening. An Anti Corruption site never stopped in ukraine. Even where there is a spring 2022 and kyiv was under speech, we had Anti Corruption interest to shunts still working and anticorruption organizations still controlling our government. In ukraine it is clearly that we are moving towards the eu and nato, which is the mandate of the people of ukraine and treats corruption as a risk to our staff. Therefore, there will be more on the track of anticorruption, fighting ukraine, and it is both of the work of government and Civil Society with the help of the eu and nato partners, when conditions are set for ukraine, what we must do, what we must strive for in the rule of law, we will be able to achieve more and to achieve faster. Paxtons Impeachment Trial begins tuesday in the Texas State Senate and it features some of the highest profile and unique legal characters in the state. Prosecuting the case against paxton are at the Legendary Rusty that for decades they have worked the biggest cases in the state. A few months ago, when paxtons lawyers ripped the impeachment office, they asked rusty harden to comment and he referred to us the courtroom comedy my cousin vinnie. Everything that guy says is [bleep]. But the political stakes are skyhigh. It may, paxton was overwhelmingly impeached by texas House Republicans 100 and 21 to 23 and paxton is vowing political retribution against those republicans who voted against him. Lets clean house. There are 31 State Senators, one of them is angela paxton, the Attorney Generals wife, but she will not be allowed to vote on her husbands impeachment. There are 12 democrats in the senate and prosecutors need 21 votes to remove paxton from office. The question is whether nine republicans will vote against paxton. Veteran republican political strategist Brandon Stein hauser says it is not clear how this trial will play out. There is a lot of political pressure coming from all sides, this is unprecedented so they are trying to do their constitutional duty, they are trying to do that legally, morally, ethically right thing. They dont know what that is yet until they really dive into it and see the evidence. Paxton has enjoyed support from donald trump and among republican voters. Hes a great man. Stenhouse versus that paxton is benefiting from trunks attacks that the Justice System is weaponized against politicians like them. That alignment is important for paxton, because it helps him. It gives him some Political Support among the grassroots voters and activists in the Republican Party of texas and it makes it more difficult for State Senators and State Representatives to impeach and then convict him. When the Impeachment Proceedings began on tuesday there is a chance that the majority of the articles of impeachment could be dismissed by a simple majority vote in the texas senate, but it is not clear if that is going to happen. If the Impeachment Trial moves forward is expected to last several weeks. When so many of us are worried about so many elements in climate, im not sure that anybody else wants to hear this, but i think we need to. When we talk about all coffers, right, they are integral to americas water supply. Why are so many of them in such a precarious state right now . That is a great question. I would say that the biggest villain here is the diesel pump. So, before world war ii farmers did take groundwater, but they took it out a very slow rate and now we have incredibly powerful pumps that can withdraw hundreds of gallons a day, per well. And they are doing as much as they can with that water in terms of the fact that we are dealing with large, industrial sized firms here that are pulling a lot of that water out of the ground. But, i want to ask you, is it what they are growing or how they are growing it . A lot of people have already had discussions, should cattle be used with this kind of water table . Are we growing too many water intensive fruits and vegetables . Where does the aquifer fit into all of . This okay, you are asking exactly the right questions. So, i think that we need to look at both what we are growing, as well as where we are growing it. So, some of the most stressed aquifers globally can be found in the arabian peninsula, in the border of india and pakistan and then the famous ogle aga at cofer that covers eight states in the United States, as well as the california Central Valley aquifer, so those are all under enormous stress. So, for us to resolve this crisis we need to look at two main areas. The first is agriculture, but the second is industry. Industry also uses quite a bit of water. In terms of agriculture i think the key question is are we growing water thirsty crops in highly erudite regions . Such as the great plains, the great plains of the United States are extremely arid, the Central Valley of california is very arid. We cannot stop growing plants in those areas, we rely on them heavily but we can do a better job. That kind of adaptation makes a lot of sense, but the come back for farmers is going to be, look, the water is, there it remains, there its going to be there forever. We have just had all of this water in california earlier this year, we had floods in the desert recently. What do you say to that counter argument . Actually, farmers are some of the most concern to people. They are organizing themselves to adapt their water use. Some agencies of the u. S. Government are helping them, like the Natural Resources conservation service. Its an interesting point that you raise about the large amount of rainfall in california. Obviously, everybody is very excited about that because it can help reduce drought and fill reservoirs, but aquifers, or Ground Water Recharge is incredibly slowly. So, many aquifers may take millions of years to fill, but only like 100 years to deplete. So, although everyone is excited about all of the rain and snow melt we have been getting, it is not going to be sufficient to recharge these heavily stressed aquifers, whether in the u. S. Or globally. I do think that the farmers are concerned and they are making changes as the Natural Resources Conversation Service among others is working closely with farmers to make careful choices about what they are growing, to make sure they keep their profit margin. You know, you make such a good point though. Millions of years to fill and sometimes can be depleted in the matter of more than a century.
