Im paula reid. Welcome to cnns special coverage of the 2024 election. The first debate and the surrender of former President Trump in georgia. We are on the cusp of a historic week for the nation and a pivotal week for the 2024 race. First, the former president and the latest indictment. Donald trump faces a friday deadline at noon to turn himself in to authorities in Fulton County, georgia. The result of his fourth criminal indictment. A senior Law Enforcement official tells cnn trump is expected to turn himself in thursday at the earliest. That would be just one day after the first debate of the 2024 president ial race which will take place without trump, who is the frontrunner for the repuican nomination. Just hours ago, he made it official, he wont attend. Now, the eht candidates who will attend all trail trump by doubledigit margins, and all of them are running out of time if they hope to catch him. Let me turn now to cnn senior crime and justice reporter, katelyn polantz. Katelyn, for the first time this local jail will have to defend w deal with a defendant who has secret Service Protection. What can we expect later this week . The sheriff here has said that donald trump and others would be treated like any other defendant. But the bottom line is that is not like any other defendant, because as you mentioned, he does have secret Service Protection. However, there are many pieces of the week that were going to see play out. Its not just donald trump and the 18 codefendants around him showing up at this jail in Fulton County, georgia. First they all have to negotiate. All of their lawyers are going to have to talk to the district attorney, the Prosecutors Office that brought these charges related to january 6th and the 2020 election, and theyre going to have to negotiate bail terms. Once they get that done, that is something that we could see happen as soon as tomorrow morning where lawyers are expected to be coming in to the area to speak to the d. A. Once they get those negotiations done, then a judge signs off on the bail. And then from some point between that negotiation and friday at noon is when each of the 19 defendants are going to have to arrive at the jail and be processed, just like any other defendant. Whether that means a mugshot for donald trump is still remains to be seen, but it is very likely that the rest of them and trump included will have their fingerprints taken, some of them or maybe most of them would be searched, and they will have to wait around inside this jail, a jail that has quite a notorious history for being a very tough place for a lot of the inmates there. And so the arrest process, the waiting around for things to happen, were going to have to watch and see just how long donald trump is inside the Jail Building to become a criminal defendant in georgia. Joining me now, cnn legal analyst elliot williams, cnn Political Commentator kristin sole advertise anderson, cnn anchor and chief legal paul begala. Donald trumps legal problems colliding with the 2024 race. Kristen, what do you make of the fact that hes not going to be at the debate . We didnt expect him to be there, but is it debates, plural . Do you think he means all the debates or just the republican ones . I think it will depend how his poll numbers look after he misses this first one. I dont think missing the first one is going to do huge damage to him. What im sort of hearing from some Republican Voters and focus groups is effectively that donald trump as the reigning champion kind of gets a firstround bye. You bring people into the debate, hash it out. The next debate, once the threshold is a little higher, maybe donald trump could expected to come in. If hes planning to not show up to any debates, thats a different conversation. But i expect him to be the strong frontrunner even after missing this first debate. What do you think is the big political moment this week . The surrender in Fulton County or the debate . The surrenders going to be much bigger. Its the biggest thing to happen in atlanta since they surrendered the city to sherman in 1864. Its going to be huge. And the fact that trumps not at the debate in person hell there be, hell dominate, because hes but hes ahead by so much. I think kristens right, youre making the right decision not to come to thdebate. I think hes making the wrong decision the way he selected his counter programming. Hes going on with a fiery Talk Show Host on a failing platform. Hes donald trump, he should have a rally. Thats what he does best. Not sitting around whining with tucker carlson. He needs to go to iowa the first day, have a big rally. He would blow out the debate. Thats me as a strategist. Im not protrump, obviously, i dont support the guy. But he seems like hes being more interested in being petulant and punishing fox news, going on twitter with his or their exstar. What he taught to do is worry about winning an election, not about punishing fox news. In part, this could be one and the same, right . Because part of his strategy, i think youre right, in terms of his more pique than point. When you look at the consequences of this indictment, of one of many indictments, he has had some gains as a result of it. Because it seems as though the campaign strategy, up to now, has been, look, im an outsider. The governments weaponized. I am essentially your last line of defense. Theyre really after you, but theyre going to go through me first. If thats part of what hes doing, what hes talking about, i could see the political moment inuring to his benefit saying, here i am once again with my back against the ropes. What he he dance to On Naug Ation night . I did it my way. Frank sinatra. The onetwo punch. Of course, sinatra had a famous mugshot. Is that going to happen thursday or friday . That is the mugshot i think of every time we talk about this question, should he he do a mugshot . Elliot, look. He knows that an arrest is not a good look, but if this is going to be the political moment of the week, is there a way for him to spin this and make it work for him politically . Of course theres a way to simin it and make it work for him politically. Just look at his numbers havent really been affected despite four indictments and sort of multiple engagements with the criminal Justice System. The bigger question in all of this is, how special is donald trump as a defendant . We hear repeatedly from the folks in atlanta and elsewhere, its just going to be like any other case, treated like any other defendant. We know that is nonsense. Even this mugshot question, im lure saying okay, it makes sense, hes the most popular, famous person on the planet, you dont need a mugshot to identify him. But frank sinatra, wesley snipes, tom delay, a lot of famous people got mugshots. Why is donald trump the one who is sort of getting this special accommodation . Thats going to be the question in Fulton County. At the federal level, they didnt opt to do the mugshot. Elliots point, i mean, can you really have a former president who doesnt get special treatment . What do you think . This is going to be a former president who will have, unlike most defendants, their attorneys, some of whom are going to be appointed by the state if they are indigent for some reason. Youre going to have Secret Service coordinating on his behalf, trying to figure out where to bring him in. You have, to be fair, some of the Significant National security or security risks that having him walk through the front door as any other person, being exposed to every other person, fingerprints, for example. Never having been a president of the United States yet. I was going to say. Man, i was going to thank you all for that moment. But never having been the president of the United States, i dont know if having fingerprints of a former president is some sort of breach of some kind, if there are any risks of doing so. I dont know if having him in general population, so to speak, would be something that would be all that different than a notorious or highprofile criminal accused of a crime and kept separate from everyone else for security reasons. There might be reasons to keep him separate, but rolling out a red carpet, you know asking if he would like a cappuccino as opposed to rolling his thumb, a very different scenario. Fulton county doesnt feel like the cappuccino sheriffs office, thats just my impress. Absolutely not. Sort of notoriously a prison system. Its a fair question, though. Important point here. President s of the United States, regardless of what you think of them, get 24hour secret Service Protection until the day they die. That involves strict management of where they go, the rooms theyre in, the people theyre exposed to, who can shake their hand, who can pat them on the back, whatever else. Its hard weve all learned weve been in prisons at virus points before, as attorneys. Certainly theyre not places that are necessarily easy to control, no matter what Fulton County says. Its still somewhat of a chaotic environment. You have to think about how to protect a sea correct Service Protectee in that environment. At the debate, is it wise for these candidates to call attention to the surrender or better to focus on what they have to offer voters . I think if you are the type of republican who is tuning in, youre probably the type of republican whos still shopping around. Maybe you like donald trump. Youre not necessarily tuning in to hear a bunch of people throw punches at donald trump, but you want to see what else is on the menu. Maybe ill choose Something Different than the usual. At the same time, these candidates have all been so averse to going after trump, and theyre all in single digits. Hes eating their lunch. At a certain point, dont you have to change up the strategy . Im curious to see what happens. Well have much more on the Republican Debate and the impending surrender of former President Trump this hour, but first, we want to update you on hilary, the storm. Which is inundating Southern California with unprecedented amounts of rain. The storm is Wreaking Havoc On Air Travel with hundreds of flights canceled. What is it like where you are right now . Reporter you know, paula, what weve been seeing throughout the day here in san diego is, youll have these moments of lighter rain like were seeing now. But a bit more wind. Then periods of very heavy rain. Its been very unpredictable. It is extraordinarily rare for it to rain in san diego in august. And so what the city has done is they have tried to block off areas like this. This is a roadway that typically floods. So this entire street is shut down. They have blocked it off to traffic, and this is just emblematic of some of the preparation that the city of san diego has taken part in. The worst of the storm has really been in the desert area just about an hour away from here. There have been some mudslides. Part of it is that the infrastructure isnt designed to take on all of this water. So what youre seeing here is something that you might be used to in your neighborhood, water going down the drain. But when were talking about a region like Southern California that is not used to all of this in august, this can create major problems. So the School System here in san diego, as well as the School System in the los angeles district, they have both shut down, saying that they simply do not have the staff to go check school by school to see what the damage is. We are Hearing Reports from other School Districts that some schools have sustain some damage. So its really going to be piecemeal on what exactly happens overnight. City officials are warning people to remain at home because this is still a very unpredictable situation overnight. Kyung lah, thank you. Its crunch time for eight 2024 gop hopefuls as they polish their Talking Points and zingers ahead of the first gop primary debate. Here are the gop candidates who have qualified for wednesdays debate so far. Former president Vice President mike pence, Florida Governor ron desantis, former ambassador to the United Nations nikki haley, entrepreneur and author vivek ram swaummy, dougburg ram, Asa Hutchinson, and former new jersey governor Chris Christie. And if youre wondering where the front runner will be, donald trump has just confirmed he will not be attending the debate. He will likely be participating in counterprogramming with former fox news host tucker carlson. Joining me now to discuss is former democratic South Carolina state representative and cnn Political Commentator Bakari Sellers and former White House Communications director under trump, alyssa farah griffin, also a cnn Political Commentator. Alyssa, lets first talk about your former boss. Hes not going to be at the debate. We didnt expect him to be. But hes there in spirit, right . How long do you think before hes brought up on that debate stage . I suspect that hell come up pretty quickly. If not there wont be opening statements, but i could see him being one of the first questions. The fox hosts that are leading the debate have previewed that they are going to ask about donald trump and his legal woes. I think thats something unavoidable. But look. He looms large over everything. He wont be present, yet he will take up a lot of the oxygen in the room. I think as most of us have been predicting i never really bought the theory that he would turn himself in on wednesday. But thursday makes a lot of sense. If nikki haley has a really good performance, what better to do than take all the oxygen out of the news cycle by turning yourself in . Thats classic donald trump. Classic, indeed. Heres how Asa Hutchinson says he is going to address trump. Lets take a listen. Im not going to defend donald trump. I will be a prosecutor. I will be telling the truth on donald trump. And whether hes there or not, he will be a focal point of issue, both what happened on january 6 but also how he will not lead the Republican Party well into the future. Chris christie also expected to take a similar approach. Those two are going to be pretty much the only antitrump or trumpcritical candidates. What do you think of that strategy, bakari . Well, i actually think that Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson probably have the ability to perform the best at this debate. They come in with this prosecutorial experience. Both of them have led states. Both of them have won elections multiple times over. So, i do believe that legal background is going to bode them well at this debate. We all know that the individual who has kind of the most to gain and the most to lose in this outside of Donald Trumps just looming presence is ron desantis. And i think ron desantis trying to go up against either one of those two, Asa Hutchinson or Chris Christie, is not going to go over well in this debate. So, i think that strategy, if you can thread that needle and talk about your conservative values or your conservative bona fides and also kind of skewer donald trump while hes not there and hes live tweeting or live truth socialing i dont know how you actually make that a verb. But while hes doing whatever hes doing, i think actually can go a long way to boost your stock in the gop field. And alyssa, to that point, lets take a look at some of the recent polling on where the field ands. Trump you can see, by far, the front runner. Desantis sits at 17 . Investic ramaswamy has 6 . The rest of the field, though, has less than 5 . Who really has the most to gain . Is it those folks who are polling so low . Is this their opportunity to try to seize a share of the pie here . Listen, i agree with my friend bakari on this. I think that its the candidates who are willing to take on trump that probably have the most to gain. Asa hutchinson can burnish his conservative credentials but also litigate the case against trump. But listen, all fire is going to be directed at Governor Desantis. The theory of the case for the candidate on this the stage is essentially, whoever can usurp the position of the number two spot has the potential to kind of rally the donors around them, try to get as many delegates, and try to, as quickly as possible, make it a oneonone fight with donald trump. Theres not a lot of data that suggests that is going to happen, and were going see a major shakeup. I do expect to see Governor Desantis to keep falling. I would note how stark those poll numbers are. Harry enten has pointed out, theres no historic example of somebody overcoming that big of a margin to go on and win the nomination. For some of these candidates, this is going to be the first time anyone whos really heard their name. For example, doug burgum is really leaning into that. This is a really huge opportunity for him. Lets take a listen to what he says about this debate. Were excited to be on the debate stage, the leastknown candidate on there. I trust that if we can show that were a credible alternative, that we can deliver the things that americans are looking for because americans do want this country to move forward. They want president ial elections to be about the future, a vision for the future. Then we have to offer that. So, bakari, what do you make of his comment there . Is that what he needs to do to go get more supporters . Instead of focusing on trump, to lay out his vision for the future . I mean, he should probably be doing Something Else with his time. I dont know, running a state or, you know, becoming a fox news contributor, writing a book maybe, or going on a speaking tour. He doesnt have a lot of political talent. Hes very, very wealthy, so i dont want to say the man doesnt have any talent. He just doesnt have that political talent, and i think hes going to vanish on the stage. Most people dont know him before the debate. They wont know him after the debate either. I do Think Ramaswamy is unique. Im not sure who his voters are. I think a lot of people are interested in what he has to say. Much of what he says is nonsensical. When you watch his interviews, he seems to have not much depth. But i do think people are interested in whether or not he is a herman cain type figure or an andrew yang type figure. At the end of the day i think alyssa may agree with me on this one of the most talented people on the stage, whether or not you like her or not, is going to be nikki haley. And i think shes going to probably have the best night of them all. Alyssa, ill let you have the last word really quickly. I expect nikki haley to come out the winner, but unfortunately were not living in a world where the best Policy Positions for the future are what win the day. She has a lot to overcome headtohead with donald trump. Bakari sellers, alyssa farah griffin, thank you. Now, the sheriff in Fulton County said the former president will be received at the jail like any other defendant. Now, our panel is back with us. And look, paul, lets take a look at the calendar, right . Its getting awfully crowded, both with Campaign Events but also possible trials. We have a few scheduled so far. The former president s lawyers say its unfair to put him on trial before the election. Do you agree or do you think voters have a right to see the resolution of at least some of these cases . He has to stand trial. Nt ow if it will be before the election or after judges will decide about the timing. Judge chuck can in d. C. Said, the interests of justice come first, not your job. And his job right now is to run for president. By the way, his political strategy is his legal strategy, right . We were just discussing that. He goes around the country, says to republican primary voters, im oppressed. Hes a billionaire, okay . Hes a former president , but hes oppressed. He runs on his grievance, and his voters love this. He said this, if i get another couple indictments, ill just walk back into the white house. The problem for republicans is, as trump gains strength with these indictments in the party, he loses strength in the general election. He may well be unbeatable in the primaries and unelectable in the general because i mean, i just saw voting from navigator, a democratic firm, 28 of republicans believe trump committed a crime. We have to get 95 of them. The 60 who dont, hell steamroll through the primaries and win. But when youre losing a quarter of your party they just dont think maybe hes rude on twitter, they think hes a criminal. By the way, 61 of independents do. So, its a really impossible situation for the Republican Party. So far great for trump, but hes a very nearsighted guy. For the party longterm, it could be catastrophic. Kristen, what do you make of that . I talked to trump voters in Fulton County, and there was clearly trump fatigue. When i asked, who are you going to support, they didnt have a name. What does it mean for him . One, thats why the debates are potentially important, if those folks that have trump fatigue but are still kind of open to him are open to someone new. The debates will be their opportunity to shop around. But its absolutely true that donald trump is a risky proposition for a general election. And yet polling that came out today from cbs news showed that 61 of republicans think that donald trump would definitely beat joe biden. So, that actually happens to line up, i think, almost exactly in their poll with the percentage of Republican Voters who are voting for donald trump. These things are very related. This argument that hes not electable, right now a lot of republicans dont want to hear it. The question is if Court Appearance after Court Appearance after Court Appearance start racking up, do some republicans who like him, think hes being charged unfairly, start going, maybe he is vulnerable. That could change things. If we definitely are going to get at least one trial, which is what voters are entitled to, youre saying. We cant do all four trials, thats not going to happen. Which one or two do you think are most important for voters ahead of the election . Why do you have to ask a question like that . Thats my job. Look, ill say as a former prosecutor, theyre all critically important. But i would say and i push back a little bit it doesnt matter what voters think. For the purposes of the criminal Justice System, what the goal is there is to deter conduct from people who have broken the law, stop other people from breaking the law in the future, and punish people who have done bad things. And that exists on a scale and timeline totally separate from our political calendar. To the question of whats most likely to come to trial, theres something getting in the way of every one of the four cases. In maralago down in florida, there are significant legal questions around handling classified documents, right . In atlanta, a state case, you have questions about whether it should be brought to Federal Court, and theyre going to litigate that for a while. Its hard to see, frankly, any of them making it to trial in the next year. But, again, theyre all critically important. Theyre crimes, and they ought to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Do you agree theyre all equally important, even the manhattan case . No. I think for voters yes, taking a step back, i agree with elliot. Every time there is a crime committed, there is an offense against the society at large. Having said that, i think when it comes to voters, theyre going to be very keenly interested in what took place leading up to january 6th. We are a little more than 400plus days away from another president ial election. Which means were about im not going to do the math here more days than that up to another inaugural event. So, if what the crux of the activity that was taking place and alleged involves someone preparing for a president ial election, to undermine the authority of either state officials, false slates of electors, or disenfranchise collectively the american votes, thats going to be very serious. I think its reflected in the decision prosecutorially of jack smith. Think back to the maralago case compared to what fani willis has done with a number of defendants to the one defendant streamlined indictment against donald trump in washington, d. C. I think the reason for that is in the hopes itll be taken seriously and because the judge also has said, judge chutkan, look, in her prior statements by the way, other judges in the Federal Court in washington, d. C. , theyve all tackled different issues, have talked about the urgency of these matters. I do think thats going to be very important. However, whether the judges calendar says that is very different. To your point, paul, look, if i had a dollar for every person who was a defendant who said, im sorry, ive got other things to do, i have things going on, its like a juror who says, i really dont want jury duty right now. It wasnt my plan for this month. You get kind of a so what, too bad, too sad. The allegations are there, and i doubt a judge at the federal level is going to look at that and say, okay, well wait until its convenient for you. A judge i used to appear in front of all the time, when jurors would say exactly that, sorry, i cant sit for in trial for a month, the judge would say, cemeteries are full of indispensable people. There will be a way you can get your butt into that seat. And if it were anyone other than the president of the United States, we would figure out a way to have the trial. I think the idea that somebodys job makes them unable to get into court is nonsense. Judge chutkan overseeing the january 6th case appears to be moving quickly. As you noted, it was designed to move quickly, just one defendant. But the two sides are over two years apart in terms of their preferred trial date. Well see what judge chutkan says. I do think this question about a president ial candidate, is that the same as a juror . I think that is a question that is ripe for the Supreme Court, and may actually get us there early next year. That prevents too many people from surrounding one candidate. Given the fact theres going to be eight people on stage, has he won before the debate even starts . With a lead this large, it would be easy to say, this is insurmountable. Everything else thats happening is just side show, and lets just get to the convention. Thats at least what trump would want you to think. It is true. A lead this large, i dont believe historically we have many examples of it being surmounted. We do not live in normal times. Thats the reason why im not ready to just say, this is completely over yet. Weve got a long way to go. As trumps legal situation unfolds, if republicans change their minds they dont currently view him as terribly risky, but if that begins to flip, they may go shopping for another candidate. Paul, some of the people here, theyre not household names. This will be their first introduction to many americans. But Vice President mike pence, former Vice President , thats not one of those people. And hes currently polling at 4 . What would your advice to him be at this point . He doesnt have much of a chance. He doesnt. Because the few republicans who dont likeru dont like Vice President pence becae served him loyally. The people who love trump dont because he refused to do what trump wanted on january 6. For all of them, though, Chris Christie, Asa Hutchinson, the prosecutors, they want to prosecute trump. I get that. A few others maybe just want to defend them. The rest are really in this this is what they need to do. Free advice. Dont say hes innocent because that just helps trump. Dont say hes guilty. First, it prejudges him. And second, voters will hate that. Say hes distracted, because he is. Ive never been under indictment, but my guess is when youre under indictment once, it probably occupies your mind. How about 90 charges . So, i think they should say, look, trump was great when he was talking about building a wall and being tough on china and creating jobs. He doesnt talk about that anymore at all. All he talks about is himself and his legal woes. That may be prudential. They may be wise for mr. Trump, but im going to be fighting for you. Even if joe biden locks up donald trump, it wont create a job, it wont educate a child, it wont crack down on china, it wont stop a smuggler of fentanyl. I think theres a lane here none of these guys and gals are occupying. They seem to be far too binary about this. Nobody is talking about the voters. Trump is running an ad now attacking the prosecutors. His Political Campaign ad is, i hate fani willis. Lets talk about that. Not only ads, also on social media. Weve seen him attack judges, district attorneys, prosecutors, also mentioning the grand jury and witnesses. We havent heard any gop lawmakers push back on that. What do you make of this . Seems like a potentially very dangerous situation. Its generally a very dangerous situation and its also potentially a crime if you knowingly try to prevent or hinder or get in the way of someones testimony before court. Rudy giuliani bet on trump when very few people were doing so. He stuck with trump after the access Hollywood Tape. Shameful, but like, you know, you can do this because youre expecting a reward. And his political Rock Star Status where he is treated almost like an expresident as he travels around the world. I think he thought being Secretary Of State would be a good way to stay in the game. Secretary of state is the most prestigious job in the cabinet, and i think he saw that as an alternate to the president ial ambitions that were never going to be fulfilled. And so im going to be a very good choice. Is there anybody better . Maybe me, i dont know. He gets a little too far ahead of himself on this. What was happening behind the scenes, there were some concerns about rudy, whether he was up for the challenge here. There is one moment in trump tower where jason miller, one of the top Communication Advisers for trump, comes out of the bullpen of his team and says we need someone to go in there and just blob questions at rudy to see what he says. Everybody scatters. The aide who does get picked goes in Behind Closed Doors and is horrified by what he hears. When is the last time you traveled to the middle east . That question comes with enough stammering that they have a followup meeting. The aide asks giuliani. You told me yesterday that you hadnt been to the middle east for a year. If you talk to people who were talking to trump at the time, they say he was never seriously considered for it, which is probably more revealing in and of itself the dynamic of the relationship between the two of them. And so he keeps a round of margins in any way that he can, trying to get back to the center of the action. One has to really appreciate and understand the arc of Rudy Giuliani and how intoxicating fame and power are. For a politician to lose relevance is gutting. What happens to political and media figures when they fear irrelevance and go off the deep end to become relevant again. I dont think he really got over losing the race for president. He was somebody who was constantly on call for the former president to reach out to. And i think this kind of brought back together this on again, off again longstanding bromance of the new york men. He has this direct access without any of the responsibility or any of the accountability. As a skilled professional who figured out how to climb his way up in the legal world and then up in the political world that he figured okay, now im in the trump world. What do i need to do to succeed in this world . And in this world, loyalty is 100 . Obedience is 100 . He just decided well, this is the world im going to be in and im going to do this. Almost immediately as giuliani joins the team in a formal way, hes doing a lot of press. When you tell me, you know, he should testify because hell tell the truth. Thats so silly. He didnt have a conversation about that. And no, it is the truth. Truth isnt truth. He says i didnt. Mr. Mayor, did you realize that . And there is a moment inside the white house where trump aides start criticizing what giuliani has said on the air and trump barks at them all and says at least rudy is out there defending me. Ill tell you what, rudy knows, he started yesterday. Hell get his facts straight. Hes a great guy. In 2018, joe biden is clearly gearing up for a president ial run and is widely perceived as the front runner. Remember, in 2007 when joe biden was making his second run for the presidency and Rudy Giuliani was making his first, joe biden famously in a democratic debate just dismissed giuliani. Catholic school he was good and other kids were bad. And then hes a prosecutor and hes going to lock up the bad guys and hes mayor to lock up the guys. And now it is biden. Rudy, from what i could say, fancying himself in that new rogerrer stone. But its the lengths that he went to and that is the former mayor of new york, this pro america kind of guy. Hes been doing business all around the world. One of the places on the map where he started to develop the relationships is ukraine. And who was the Obama Administration point person for dealing with ukraine . It was joe biden. And just think of how rich that opportunity is for Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani had one name only and that is how to mess up joe biden. His son, hunter biden, was making money off of a Company Owned by the company and if they said somehow they could find a connection between joe biden, taking the official action to help his son enrich himself in ukraine. He thinks that it will be a Golden Moment for donald trump. And over the beginning of 2019, i start getting texts about rudy from ukraine, how people need to look into this. At this point, giuliani has let them decide that he has joined the mentality of President Trump and his administration and totally signed on that. And he wants to build that case. So he falls into the world of russia and ukraine, all sorts of competing agendas and as to who is a reliable source and who isnt. The problem is, this wasnt some back room deal. This was about democracy in ukraine surviving. As rudy is ramping up, he starts feeling like hes running into the roadblock and that is the ambassador. I heard very bad things about it. Rudy giuliani would dig up dirt. Saying she was there, pushing back on the corrupt figures of ukraine. The smearing, the attempt to destroy the Career Foreign Service official for this obscure political errand. It was the Early Warning signal. The white house notes of that call and when he asked for a shipment of the antitank missiles, he countered with these words. I would like you to do us this favor though. And what he doesnt realize is that inside the white house, trump has put a hold on several hundred millions of dollars of aid to ukraine. In anticipation of zelenskyy agreeing to these investigations. Many of those close to donald trump thinks none of this would have happened without Rudy Giuliani. Ukraine was giulianis deal. These were his connections, these were his sources. This was his foreign policy. I dont know if i think the average american at that time understood why it was so important that we give the Security Assistance to the ukrainians. Again this moment of everybody working to sort of contain the rudy influence and keep him away from the president. Yet they will keep seeking him out. He is not the guy that will back down, but the guy that doubles down. Whenever he was on the defensive when he was mayor. His response was to attack. I dont remember him ever apologizing, saying i shouldnt have said that or i overreacted. You see that through the impeachment process. It is completely wrong. A period where all his friends were begging him to lay low and stop going on tv, pressing the case. He couldnt do it. Ive got the documents and the proof and the witnesses. One person i spoke to who met with him around that time described driving around in a cab with rudy. He rolled down the window to the high five Construction Workers waving at him.
