When the first debate takes place for the gop later this month, we do not know if you will be on the stage, but we do know five days later, there is another hearing related to his it might mean for trying to overturn the 2020 election results, one of many legal challenges that he is facing as he attempts to return to the white house. Trump also has a looming federal criminal trial for allegedly mishandling classified documents and he will stand trial in new york for allegedly falsifying Business Records in connection to hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the final days of the 2016 campaign. Then on the silver the bullfight of thing, he has to appeal a verdict that found him liable for sexually defaming oneperson. And then there is still a potential indictment coming out of fulton county, georgia. In a State Investigation into efforts to overturn his 2020 loss. We are tracking all of this. Caitlin, this stacked court docket is on a Collision Course with this political calendar and that spells a lot of drama. I do not think we are fully grasping just how busy this is going to get in the next couple months. Lets just look at this month. Today is the fourth. Next week, there is going to be a rearrangement for President Donald Trump. He does not have to be there in person. That is take place on thursday. And then there are deadlines and filings and all kinds of things that are going to happen in court throughout the month of august and then you get the first gop debate on the 23rd and then a hearing, a crucial hearing in this case on the 28th, where he will be before a judge for the first time and she is going to lay out what she wants to do for a trial date. So, that is that case. And then we get into january. There is a lot of deadlines on the calendar that is really busy between august and january, but then january is when we are into true election season. Iowa caucuses and the trial for the second defamation suit in new york are set to be on the exact same one. You may not need to be there in person, but it is a substantial thing to have this sort of trial happening. It is very similar to one he has been found liable. That is the story line, what the caucuses are. Then we get into march. A couple months later, these are 10 primary dates in march, and then you also have this new york Hush Money Case going to trial for the trial date on the 25th. Then you are here later and this is the federal case in florida that we do have on the calendar. It could start this day or this day, but that is also in the middle of the heart of primary season. So, it is such a busy calendar and we do not have a january 6th trial date yet to put on this board. It is really stunning and as you said, so many other dates that we are going to be seeing and we will bring those up on the calendar in the coming weeks and months. Kaitlan, thank you so much for taking us through that. Will these trial dates hold, do you think . That is a possibility that they could hold, but a lot of it will be up to the judges. You just watch what they want to do. There might be some public negotiation over different prosecutor saying, you know, you can go first or we want to make this go first, specifically because this January 6th Case is straightforward. It is just against him and there are four counts. It is not the classified document issues. We need to see what the judge wants to do, whenever we get to The End Of August into that hearing on the 28th because she could very well start to make some sort of insinuation that it is time to get this on the calendar and get it on the calendar soon, so it goes to trial. Some judges are very strict about what they want to do and they will set a trial date and never move it. But at court, things do change. This will be very fluid and the other thing, criminal defendants often are very much expected to be before a jury in person. That factors in. He also loves as a Campaign Stop in South Carolina this is what they were talking about, how there is this intersection between the legal and the political. What we are watching is any actual reaction to yesterdays arraignment. Obviously, i was with him yesterday and he was in a not great but after that arraignment. He was irked they called them mr. Trump instead of president. They did not feel he had enough agents on the ground. After days like this, after his third arraignment, he is angry. He is frustrated he does not want to be doing this but he did not really voice that yesterday. Today, he will be in front of a soldout crowd. These are big Trump Supporters in a very red state and it might make him open up a little bit more, but i do want to talk a little bit about what kaitlan was just talking about with this intersection between the legal and political because it really goes to what trump and his team have been arguing. Maybe it is not the legal argument, but it is the one in the court of public opinion, which is this is all political and this will harm his campaign and it is election interference. So far, just because he is campaigning and he is still far away from the first caucus, there has not been as much of an argument, but when you get into the calendar of alternating days between being in trial and being on the campaign, that is where they think they have solid footing when it comes to putting this out there, saying this is election interference. Im not just talking about them arguing this in the court of law but also talking about them arguing this in front of the voters. They believe they can get the voters on board with this idea, which, obviously, has yet to be seen. Thank you, kristen holmes. Jim . I want to begin with you and to get your reaction to something that his newest attorney said regarding the case. Have a listen. I want to get your reaction to this significance. What President Donald Trump said is lets go with option d. Lets just halt. Just pause the voting and allow the State Legislatures to take one last look and make a determination as to whether or not the white house handled it fairly. That his constitutional law. That is not an issue of criminal activity. I saw you shaking your head, as you are listening. Is it constitutional law and was it a slip up, that he is saying trump made the decision to attempt to push back the certification . Yes, it is most definitely not constitutional law. The craziest thing watching these interviews with Trump Lawyers yesterday, at the courthouse and in d. C. And later on in prime time on fox and newsmax is they keep confessing to elements of the crime with respect to their clients. They were saying, of course, trump was told that it was stolen. Another lawyer says, of course, he told mike pence to pause the accounting. You do not get to do that. They required would it required to trying to contact concocted some stranger theory. But they pushed it anyway. Anytime they go on tv, anytime President Donald Trump talks to an audience like he is about to do, they confessed two more elements of the crime and the prosecutors are sitting there and hitting record and going, that is prosecutorial exhibit 24,000. Ron, there has been a lot made of, well, republicans not being moved by this. Republican primary voters seem not to be and trump is very much in the lead. That said, looking more broadly, i know paul a new poll shows two thirds, not 51 , they believe these new charges are serious. Does that worry the trump campaign, you think . They believe they can, you know, one step at a time. Right, jim . By and large, the vast majority of republicans , by their interpretation of everything that has happened since the election of 2020, that the election was stolen by biden and that these are political prosecutions, but there are yellow, if not red warning lights on the dashboard and all of these polls. Voters are reluctant at this moment to elect joe biden to a second term. There is a lot of concern about his age and the economy, and that is keeping trump quite close to biden in the overall headtoheads we see at this point, however, as you know, 53 of the majority of independence in his new poll described these charges as very serious and the New York Times siena poll this week, the majority of independence said he went so far after 2022 threaten american democracy. 75 of independence says he should not be president again. Inside the republican coalition, he has used this very effectively, but there are clear Warning Signs to the gop about how the broader electric may react, particularly if any of these trials you have the public statements and you have public polling, and then you have the more important legal cases, right . Now, prosecutors have to prove a crime and they have to do so to a jury. How significant is it to see rebukes from folks who served at the highest level under trump, mike pence, his Attorney General, bill barr, who happens to be a lawyer as well, rebuking his actions following the election . If they take the stand and at those comments, how impactful in the courtroom with that be . It will be immensely powerful in the courtroom because by and large, all the witnesses, all the testimony, all the documentation that will be presented by the government is not coming from some deep state antitrumper were bureaucratic it is coming from his own people, his Attorney General and from senior staff from the white house and various political appointees. These were his people and they will be a prime example number one, two, three to 2500 of the witnesses and testimony to convict him in the documents case and in the January 6th Case. It is going to be his people testifying. That will be very powerful. And from the highest levels. Before we go, ron, you write wrote quite a point apiece about the significance of most Republican Voters, the minority, most Republican Voters who still believe the election was stolen from trump, as you know, that Thjanuary 6th was a legitimate protest, but his effort to subvert the results did not violate the law. You said the dominant faction in one of our two major parties has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to accept anti democratic means to advance its interest. Do you think that is a threat . Look, it is an incredibly it is an almost unprecedented situation. Maybe the south and the decades before the civil war had an equally tenuous commitment to democracy and we certainly, as you noted, we have seen the officials right around trump, as well as most republican State Officials in the key states, pushing back against his efforts to overturn the 2020 elections, but in between, the vast majority of republican elected officials have been on board. Most Republican Attorney generals tried to look at something. Voted to overturn the results. The few, the ones that have spoken out on these indictments have basically reiterated his claims that it is all political. What youre not seeing is a systemic pushing back in the party against these recent attempts to shatter norms, if not laws, of that peaceful, democratic transition and it makes you wonder if he is the republican nominee and does not win, will there be any more resistance in the gop to him executing anything short of a fullscale riot at the capital than last time . Another victim has been identified in the gilgo beach killings investigation. Officials now say that Karen Vergata is the woman previously known as fire island jane doe. She disappeared some 27 years ago. Her feet and legs were found in 1996 and 15 years later, in 2011, her skull was discovered in nassau county. Authorities were able to determine through dna testing that the legs and skull belong to the same person. District attorney ray revealed it in the identification process. Listen to this. In august of 2022, approximately six months after we formed this gilgo task force, a Detail Profile suitable for comparison was developed from the remains of Karen Vergata. In september of 2022, the fbi was able via a Genetic Genealogy Review to identify her, presumptively as fire island jane doe. Thereafter, in october of 2022, using a swab from a relative of Karen Vergata, we were able to identify her. Joining us now is Law Enforcement correspondent charles ramsey. He was there in philadelphia and washington, d. C. Thank you for being with us. The da says they knew her identity way back to last september. So, why wait until now to reveal it to the public . Notification. That is something that is essential. Obviously, they made this identification, but they wanted to make sure they were able to reach as many relatives as possible before they released this information to the public. It is just amazing the advances in science and technology, to be able to put together these cases. The way they are doing it now. My career goes back over 50 years. We could not do it then, but now it is very possible based on the kind of science and technology that we have. It could potentially bring someone to justice. To that point, the da did not announce any new charges. He did not make it to the alleged killer of the gilgo four, Rex Heuermann. Why not . They have a lot of work to do. First of all, it is quite different. This particular individual, whose identity was just revealed, that body was dismembered. They found the feet and the legs back in 19 six 96. Then they found the school. I do not think they located the torso of the body. When you go back to the other cases, the gilgo four, where they were actually charged, those bodies were bound but they were also wrapped in burlap. They were not dismembered. There are some differences in this case it does not mean the same person is not responsible, but it means there is more work that has to be done in order to connect that to those of four and the other bodies that were found there at gilgo beach. Still, they have not been linked to any individual. That is one detail in this case that is really startling, the fact other bodies have been discovered. Nearly a dozen set of Human Remains have been found along Ocean Parkway on the south shore of long island. Do you think there might be another mass killer out there . It is possible to have someone else out there. You want to keep everything open to the possibility, but it is unusual for more than one individual to use that particular area as a location where they dispose of bodies. It is not unheard of. You have heard stories for decades about bodies being found in the desert of nevada and that sort of thing. But this is unusual. Right now, they are relying heavily on science and on forensics in order to tie these cases together. They may or may not be able to do that. Who knows what technology will be available three years from now or five years from now, that might be able to further assist them in trying to resolve this particular case in its entirety. They clearly say, yes, it is affecting the military and affecting other Military Functions and its ability to lead and move forward. They said these officers and admirals may have to stay in their positions longer and if possible, do the job above them. Do the job in the line of succession above thehey have to fill both roles. Russias War May Hinge On who wins the next election in the u. S. They say officials are concerned that Vladimir Putin will not change course until after the 2024 contest is decided in the hopes of President Joe Biden being defeated and that his successor cut off u. S. Aid to ukraine. Jennifer hensler is at the State Department for us. Tell us more about your reporting on this. Officials told us that they absolutely believe that the 2024 u. S. Election is playing a significant role in putins thinking about how he focuses on the war. They say he wants to wait out the u. S. Support to ukraine. He is looking to next november in the hopes that they will elect someone who is willing to cut off aid and he was not going to the same level of funding on the same kind of weaponry we have seen the Biden Administration give to kyiv. One official who is familiar with the intelligence but it pretty bluntly, that putin is looking for people like former President Donald Trump to take control next year and he said to us, quote, putin knows trouble help them and so do the ukrainians and our european partners. Even though we did not see anything explicitly to that effect, you have to assume everyone is thinking it. Well there is no specific u. S. Intelligence assessment on his thinking, these officials are incredibly worried that this means putin is not going to relent. He is not going to stop his attacks on these targets we have seen. He will not be willing to come to the Negotiating Table until he sees what happens next november. Another key factor is the ukrainian counteroffensive, which has not yet made significant gains. Officials say that without those gains, he is likely to be even more confident that he can carry on for another year or more. Brianna . Purely from his perspective, it would make sense to wait this out, with how much he has invested in this and if he is looking for a turn, that might be the one that he could hope for. They shared sensitive Military Secrets with chinese intelligence officers, including information about military exercises. Weapons and radar. Military capabilities in the pacific and notably it comes as china has made enormous strategic strides against the u. S. It is larger than the u. S. Fleet. How confident are you, how they are poised to defend the region . I am very confident. It is still concerning that the ccp, the Chinese Communist party, is doing everything in his power to try to gain information about our Weapon Systems and capabilities and plans and tensions. Also the partnerships with allies and friends in the region. In this particular case, one of the people who was indicted was station on the uss essex, which is a wasp class Amphibious Landing ship it is important for building up our determines deterrence. There is also looks at exercises coming up in the pacific region. So, they are absolutely trying to get more of this information and on the flipside, we have to do more to protect that information and, quite frankly, they are continuing a pattern where i am concerned that low level folks in the military have access to too much classified or protected or Sensitive Information and that is a separate issue we have to tackle as well. On that note, congressman, do you think they are isolated cases . How expensive do you think chinas reaches within the u. S. Armed forces . I think they are doing everything they can to target members of our military. They have 110,000 people in their equivalent of our cia, which is called the ministry of state security, the mss. These people are trying to go after targets, trying to recruit people like these individuals who were indicted recently. It is a good thing that we uncovered this particular plot but going forward, we obviously have to continue to be vigilant because these folks, the ccp, are bent on getting Information Advantages on us. To your point, these two arrests mark the third time a u. S. Service member has been arrested this year and charged with espionage. Jack was the other. There are serious concerns about cyber espionage. Do you think the had gone is adequately protecting its secrets . I think it could do more. I think it is doing a decent job but it needs to do more. What we know about the ccp is that roughly two thirds of the Cyber Attacks in the u. S. Is generally coming from the prc. And on top of that, they have recently been found to be Planting Malware in Critical Infrastructure related to military bases. And talking about power and water and communication lines. They are trying to go after secrets within the pentagon, obviously, and our federal contractors. To that extent, we have to do a better job of promoting cybersecurity, not only at the pentagon, but also in the private sector and making sure that those who are subject to attacks or victims of tas are willing to share the information about it so we can all be protected. Congrsm, i want to talk about another international adversary and that is russia. There is a new poll showing that for the first time, a majority of americans oppose congress providing additional funding to ukraine. 55 in this poll said no. What is your reaction . Well, i think, at this point, what i sense among most democrats and republicans in congress is strong support for the ukrainians, perhaps putting more provisions in place with oversight and further into them. By and large, the vast majority of the people i speak with Want Ukrainians to prevail on the battlefield and that makes all the sense of the world because they are fighting a war so we do not have to. And the cost of not supporting them far exceed the benefits of letting them go. So, to that end, i think we have to continue to support them. I am concerned about reports that Vladimir Putin is somehow interested in donald trump becoming president as part of his battlefield strategy. I am concerned about what he and the russians might do to interfere in the upcoming election, not only in the general election, but perhaps even in the primaries on the republican side. They said, quote, often he would go for drives at night and he did so late on November 12th and into november 13th, 2022. He is not claiming to be at a specific location him at a specific time, and they go want to say in the filing that they do not have a specific witness to say exactly where he was, but they believe that during the trial, which is set to start in october, that cooperating evidence will come up from Defense Experts and witnesses. All of this has, because the prosecution has pushed back on kohbergers alibi, saying this is not enough evidence and they want more. Will this information, this newly filed motion satisfy a judge .
