Special counsel added Maintenance WorkerCarlos De Oliveira against the former president and his aide walt nauta. De ol varvera approached the i. Director at maralago told him, quote, the boss wanted the Surveillance Video deleted. Cnn spoke to them prosecutors may have a hard time especially if they want to use it against trump. They dont have much more than that they may have enough to charge carlos with it but quite frankly, if you charged donald trump every time somebody said the boss wanted something. So many of them just use that phrase. So, they would have to actually make the connection did he actually communicate that to carlos. I dont think theyre going to be able to sustain their burden as to others. Even if they do have that employee come in and say, yes, carlos said this to me. Now, sources tell cnn that the maralago i. T. Director received a Target Letter after federal prosecutors after trump was indicted in june. Its unclear if hes cooperating with prosecutors. But cnn has learned some of the new allegations added to the indictment against trump was based on information provided. He is not currently facing charges in this case, to talk about all of this because theres a lot, lets bring in cnn legal analysis joey jackson. Joey, good to see you this morning. I want to start here, Carlos De Oliveira expected to appear in Federal Court as a third defendant in the case. What are you looking to learn and what does this is a to you that were adding defendants as the case is essentially going. Yeah, omar, good morning. It says that the federal government is laser focused on proving the case. I think the government certainly would have had information as we look at the charges, conspiracy to obstruct and false information. I think theyre looking to see whether he would play ball with them what do i mean . Would you cooperate . When you have somebody like mr. Trump and apparently hes getting his legal bills paid i think the Open Question is whether he would provide information and flip. To the extent that hasnt happened you see the pressures upon him. That pressure being you are now a codefendant, sir in a federal case that is huge. So at an arraignment what youre doing you have the right to be apprised specifically of what the charges are. You have a right to plead not guilty. Obviously dates are set for exchange of discovery and for you to get on the calendar with your codefendants to go to trial. And obviously, the Bail Conditions with respect to whether or not youll number custody, out of custody. Its not expected that hell be remanded. Meaning remain in custody pending the charges like his other codefendants. But this is a Significant Development and adds another person to the mix to establish the governments case against the president he is the one they are really looking for, they being the government. And the mix here, i think the person being added here is one that continues to develop, it seems. Trump, of course, hes denying that he ever instructed anyone to delete Surveillance Video. And the alleged conversation between Carlos De Oliveira and the i. T. Director. When asked how many days they retained the too muchage and was told the boss wanted it completed. So the i. T. Hasnt been charged someone is, though, Carlos De Oliveira, what does that say about the nature of Special Counsel. What it says, omar, the person who is not charged, youre referring to mr. Tavares, the person who is the i. T. Technology person that he is giving information to the government that is valuable and providing corroboration with regard to what is. Happening. They get information that is trump teams, with regard to the grand jury that says we want surveillance. Therefore, of course, their conversations indicating that, hey, can we get the Surveillance Footage deleted. Not that it has been, but apparently the evidence is that the effort was made. Theres been a conversation between the Gentleman De Oliveira broad before the court today and taveras saying i dont have the authority to do that, and hes not charged. So that gives a sense to me that lease providing information to the government which corroborates this indictment and who can be a powerful with the tons flip against trump. Dont know that for a fact but what it means to me as a Defense Attorney if you have information like that and the person who is not embroiled in the indictment. They must be on team usa, that means cooperating with the government. Im sure well learn more as this plays out. Obviously as you know, there are multiple investigations. Lots of Legal Proceedings happening in various jurisdictions around the country, the trump orbit. In georgia, fulton count d. A. Fani willis said theyre ready to go. In your experience, is that the type of activity and comments common with a highprofile indictment, or are we jumping the gun here . It appears to be, and, omar, we dont know what we dont know. But what we know, the grand jury, you gave the information, factually 2 1 2 years. We know obviously theres a Concurrent Federal Investigation by the Special Counsel mr. Smith which is coverage the same ground in georgia. But people need to understand that the federal government certainly has a place in this investigation, as we know. But the state upon committee alleged criminal activities would have occurred, georgia, they have a place as well. So if you have barricades and police, you know, being structured and organized and Everything Else in georgia, i think it means that a federal indictment certainly is being investigated. This is in fact one of the deadliest attacks that have taken place in the country this year. Its Launching A Beta Website for a new incomedriven Repayment Plan where federal Student Loan Borrowers can apply for lower monthly loan payments. Could even be as low as zero dollars per month. Cnns Arlette Saenz has more. Reporter the Biden Administration administration is taking some steps to offer relief to some Student Loan Borrowers with some borrowers potentially seeing their deal go as low as zero dollars a month. And its in a baieta website foa test period of replacement that the administration is calling the s. A. V. E. Plan. This would apply to those who have federal Student Loans. Private Student Loans are not part of this. It applies to current holders and future as well. This plan is based on income and family size. And the Department Of Education is estimating that 1 million borrowers could potentially see their payments go to zero dollars per month. This is discretionary income, so that money you have after paying your taxes and other living expenses. And individuals makes 32,805 or less. And families of four making 67,500 or less they would see their Monthly Payments wiped out to zero. Another interesting component to the plan, as youre paying off the student debt, the interest would no longer accrue on those federal loans. Now others when this plan goes into full effect next summer, they could see their payments cut in half. And ultimately could have them all forgiven if they make their payments on time for ten years. This is the latest effort from the Biden Administration to try tell offer relief for Student Loans after the Supreme Court had struck down president bidens forgiveness plan. There have been programs in the past going back decades and officials that i spoke to do believe they have a legal standing on this because congress has given them authority to build these incomebased Repayment Plans. Ultimately, they do not think there will be a successful legal challenge because they havent seen this with the plan in the past. Eli, great to see you, obviously with the Supreme Court striking down the Biden Administrations plan for student loan forgiveness. How do you think things are going to go this time around . Well the Supreme Courts decision is pretty popular. Over half of voters supported that move by the court. You know, the Biden Administrations plan on Student Loans wasnt really that popular with the overall electorate. It was something that enthused democrats, young people. But it was a pretty tough sale with the american people. I think to your latter point that it enthused some democrats, enthused some young people. Obviously, were heading into a major president ial political cycle, at least some in the end look at this as key as bidens attempt to swing young voters that he would need in order to clinch reelection. Do you think this will actually work, it would move the needle enough to make any significant difference . It might with some people. These elections are about margin especially as close agency the contest between him and donald trump looks when young people vote, democrats win. Right now, he has about a tenpoint lead over trump among the youngest voters in the electorate. About a third of these folks think that Student Loans should be a big priority for washington to take on. But, look, young people are like everybody. They think about the economy as a whole just like older voters do as well. So, you know, the Biden Administration taking on things like inflation will go a long way to helping folks face some of these cost issues. So more keeping in the wider lens of the economy, youre saying, as opposed to just keeping within the Student Loan Lens . Yeah. I mean, thats where voters are. And thats where democrats are still struggling. The president struggles on the economy issue. And democrats on capitol hill do as well. Yeah. So Vice PresidentKamala Harris is on what her office is calling her summer conference tour. Shes blasting republicans, calling out cultural wars. Making lastminute stops to speak about reproduction and other issues there is an attempt with biden aides to build her up. Do you think harris will be an effective messenger for bidens campaign . I think harris is popular with democrats. Shes popular with black voters key for next year. Shes popular with young folks and popular for the president with the donors that need to support his campaign. And weve seen how shes responded to things that have popped up, comments made by ron desantis in florida, about racebased curriculum. And she showed up quickly after that. Shes agile, shes fast. And look, republicans are taking note, too. A lot of messaging that republicans are pushing out is trying to try take her down if not next year in president ial cycles to come as the future of democratic party. In arkansas a judge has temporarily blocked a state law that would have held librarians and bookstores criminally liable for books for minors deemed harmful. That came weeks after a group of librarians, libraries and bookstores filed a Lawsuit Arguing that a second of the law violated the first amendment.
