Attempting to figure out, to explain, how this might have happened. In the meantime, Family Members are holding onto hope, and they are desperately waiting for answers. My nephew was here with a wife and three four children. Im just asking god. My mom is an absolutely amazing person. Shes a fighter, and she fights for every single one of us. And we wont stop, until we wont stop fighting, until we find her. I want to get, now, to sanjay and cnn correspondent, rosa flores also there at the scene of the building collapse. Rosa and sanjay, this is you know, this is heartbreaking to hear from these families. And there are, still, so many questions about what happened here. No doubt, brianna. And rosas been here since yesterday morning. It is tough, i just have to say, listening to those Family Members. I cant even imagine if your if you dont know, at this point. And that is the case for 99 people, theyre still unaccounted for. I i wonder, do we have any more insight, as to what, exactly, happened here, for starters . You know, its too early right now. The officials tell us that theyre really focused on the searchandrescue efforts, as you can see. But if we can go back to 1 30, yesterday morning, and look at that video of the collapse, because thats really where it, all, started. And we are learning more from witnesses, from loved ones, about those panicking moments, when people were trying to flee for their lives. From talking to officials, Fire Officials here, they say that, when they arrived on scene, the first thing that they did was to start rescuing people from the building and, also, from the rubble. They pulled 35 people from the building. Two people, from the rubble. And, of course, we now know that one individual has died. I talked to individuals from the from jackson memorial, sanjay, and they say that they have surgeons here, waiting. And so, i was, actually, kind of curious. What type of of of injuries would they be expecting to see . Yeah. But there theres surgeons here, waiting, just in case they can find somebody alive. These are some of the most complicated sort of searchandrescue sort of missions. Ive seen this in haiti. And i keep sort of an eye on the clock. We are about 28 1 2 hours, now, since the building collapsed and thats something that medical professionals are constantly thinking about, as well. If there are people who are trapped, what sort of whats their medical condition . Are they are they crushed . Do they have Crush Injuries . Have they been in these pockets or voids that weve been talking about . They dont know. I mean, these are all sorts of considerations. So its one of these ideas that you want to have as many resources onsite, as possible. Even, possibly, placing ivs in people, while theyre still you know, still being extricated, if needed. So, they have all this here. When the Rescue Mission, sort of, started. I i guess they arrived right away. We are talking, again, 28 hours ago, now. So, what was the first thing, after they started to search the rubble. Did they bring in fema and other organizations, here, as well, do you know . Yes, and and i got to say that the members of the miamidade fire rescue have responded to disasters around the world. So, these are very welltrained individuals that have done this, before. They have been to haiti. Theyve been to mexico city. They have been to other other places so they are very welltrained. And the way that an official explained it to me, sanjay, is this type of work is so dangerous and so painstaking, they literally move, inch by inch. They move a piece of rubble. Theyre working with Structural Engineers to shore up the building. To build tunnels to go into the building to listen for signs of life. So at some point, and i know you have probably seen this in other parts of the world, because i have, they will do an all stop on operations, just to listen for signs of life. And they do believe that there are these voids, that you were talking about. There is these voids where they think that there could be life. But there are a lot of challenges, though. This is a residential building. So, as you might imagine, the pipes have burst. There are fumes. Theres gas. There is, also, vehicles. So, there is a lot that theyre doing dealing with, as they are trying to find signs of life. We are just about a block away, rosa. And i as soon as i arrived here, im sure it was the same for you. You can smell the aftermath of this. Its the toxins, the heavy metals, whatever it is in the air. Smoke. Again, its a very similar smell to what i have seen after building collapses in haiti and thing likes that. I wonder if, you know, people who dont know this community, or dont know this area. You have lived in this area for these types of areas for awhile. What is it like here . Who lives here . Is it likely the building was was full of occupants . Or not . You know, its very typical, in south florida, for buildings like this to have mixed, i guess, residence. People who live here permanently. So, families with children, senior citizens. And then, also, people have vacation homes. And or snowbirds. Its very typical of this area, and so, at any point in time, its difficult to say whos in the building. Because there could be visitors that, you know, if you have a condo, you might let your friends borrow it. Or your family borrow it. And so, there is no, easy way to have a list of individuals who are in the building. Thats why fire rescue was asking loved ones to fill out wellness forms. So, they can figure out how many people, exactly, were inside the building. As of now, theyre looking for 99. Thats the mission thats going on behind us. Firefighters, on a race against time trying to find life. Its its its its unbelievable work, and we are going to put a phone number up on the screen for people to call if they know if they know people who should have been in the building that are unaccounted for, still. Its interesting, the part of the building that collapsed, as well, was facing the ocean. You can sort of see it, again, over our shoulders here. Its a little bit hard to tell but it was the part of the building facing the ocean. I dont know if thats relevant or not. We are going to find out. Did that, somehow, contribute to this collapse . We will see. But, john, i mean details obviously still coming in slowly. One of the questions will be, did the salt in the air, the water, the moisture, over the 40 years that this building was standing, did that play a role . We just dont know, at this point, yet. We do know that the building was due for some refurbishing. Due for some maintenance at the 40year mark, as required, frankly, by florida law. Stand by, for a minute, guys. As you were describing these crews, they are going piece by piece through the rubble. Looking for any signs, any signs, of life. Now, as of now, were told they have not heard voices. But they did hear some sounds. Latelast night, cnn spoke with surfside mayor, charles burkett. We did have a couple hits. Weve had hits during the day. We pulled a little boy out. We pulled his mother out, i think. Its its very touch and go. Its raining, now, which complicates the issue. And it that that is upsetting me, because its gonna, inevitably slow down the process. In the United States, buildings dont just fall down like this. There is a reason for that. We have got to get to the reason and we have got to understand what happened here because this is not normal. But todays not the day for that. Today is the day to try to save as many people as we can. There will be a time for that. And as soon as that time comes, we will be on that, like you cant believe. Were back here in surfside. And i am joined now by jeffrey rose. Thank you for joining us. Youre youre a general contractor. You have actually done work in this building. Ive done some interior renovations. My parents own a unit in the building. They left last week. Theyve been here many times. They lived here for the last three months, actually. They have been doing some minor work on their apartment. [ inaudible ] havent been able to get ahold of. Im so sorry. Its been just a terrible tragedy for a lot of people in the neighborhood. You talked to your parents . Yeah, informed them last night. They are holding up as well as they can. They have lost a bunch of friends. Im so sorry, jeffrey. This is one of those things. No one, i think, its safe to say, anticipated, expected, could have predicted this. You have done work in the building. I mean, do you have any i have done floors, kitchens, bathrooms, in several of the units here. Never had seen any signs of anything out of the ordinary. [ inaudible ]. Went down was the middle buildings that face the ocean. Thats the area for the reroofing. At this point, theres only been reroofing work, that i am aware, that was done. And then, the part that was still standing, i heard, is where they were going to be doing the rest of the work. I have been all over the world covering disasters. I was in haiti. And i remember one of the things that struck me is that Building Codes are just very different, in different parts of the world. In haiti, there really werent much, in the way of regulations. Here, in the United States, there is a lot. So when you just piece this together, i realize its only been 28 1 2 hours and everyone is still trying to figure this out. But having been in the building. It was the side of the building that was facing the ocean. Does any of this sort of are you are you piecing it together . No, i have no conclusion of what happened. I mean, florida has one of the strictestBuilding Codes because of the hurricanes. Ever since hurricane andrew, they have really stepped up the Building Code down here. Everything, at this point, is speculation. And and these buildings withstand hurricanes. So the the put a little microphone on you there. Help you out a little bit. So so, when you your parents used to live in this building or or have a place in this building. What is the the nature of the residents . Do a lot of people come back and forth . Are theyre permanent residents here . Sorry, got a little bit of wind, guys. Yeah, its a mix. The building was originally built 40 years ago. It was Three Friends out of canada. So a lot of residents that live in the building are still canadians, as well as new residents that purchased units. Some of some of the original, actually, owners still have units in the building from passed down from generation to generation but it is a whole different mix of unit owners here. I mean, we are a small town of 6,000 residents. Everyone has some connection, with somebody in this building. We are not a big city like miami or miami beach. You know, were a small town here. And and what is what is the neighborhood like here . I mean, i see little little shops and things like that. But what is what is it like . Its a familyoriented neighborhood. I mean, my son learned to swim in the pool at the building behind us. I had his 1st birthday there. I had my 35th birthday there. My son plays tennis right behind us at the community center. This is a familyoriented town. This is a small, tightknit community. I am sure you are talking to a lot of friends and neighbors who live here. Are you hearing Anything Else . We are hearing, obviously, some of the details about the Rescue Mission here. But just in terms of how the community is responding . The communitys been really good. Theres been a lot of different chat groups and a lot of people really just want to know what they can donate, what they can do. Theyre opening up their homes. Like i said, Everybody Knows someone affected by this. So we are a very tightknit community and the residents, the commissioners, everybody here is doing everything they can. And, you know, we we all know somebody thats been affected by this. So, so sorry. I mean, it just its hard to hear these Family Members who really, at this point, they just have no idea. That uncertainty, i think, has got to be one of the hardest things. So so, what what do you think is sort of unfolding now here, from just a this is your line of work, Contracting Work what do you think is unfolding here . I mean, right now, were just hoping for the best. They are obviously searching through the rubble to see if they can, hopefully, find some survivors on those lines which were the ones facing the ocean. The ones facing west on collins are still standing, as of right now. And they are just hoping, you know, for a miracle right now, to find somebody. I know that. All right. Jeffrey, please, stick around. You know, i would like to keep talking to you about this. Brianna, you know, i dont know. We can hear the sounds of the work thats going on over here, behind us. Theres water that is, still, being sprayed into the air over there. Some of that is theres, i think, small fires and things like that, theyre trying to cool down aspects of the Rescue Mission. These rescuers can only work in short bursts because it is so such laborious work that theyre having to do here. So, we are going to keep an eye on things. Brianna, jeffrey will stick around with us. Back to you, for now. All right, sanjay, they are hoping for a miracle there in what is a very disastrous situation. Each hour that passes, the race to find survivors is growing more desperate in south florida. We will have more on the challenges facing searchandrescue teams, next. No, hes not in his room. Making it out but ive seen centuries of this. With a companion that powers a digital world, traded with a touch. The gold standard, so to speak ; so, in this type of collapse, even though it is a pancake collapse. As the slabs of Concrete Slide and and move towards the ground, they do create voids. You know, as the rubble crushes and slabs of Cop Crencrete Land top of it there are definitely voids. So we are hopeful we will find patients in those in those spaces. Incredible, lifesaving sort of Rescue Missions going on right now. 28 1 2 hours roughly after this building collapsed. You can sort of see over my shoulder. Light is starting to come out here so people are getting a better look at what has happened. These missions have been going on, obviously, since the collapse has happened and it is painstaking work. People are coming up from all over the country to try and help. Scott goldstein is joining us now. Hes done this work for some time. Hes head of Montgomery CountyFire Department and he is a specialist in urban search and rescue. Scott, thanks so much for joining us. Thank you, sanjay, and good morning. Good morning. Look. I mean, this is this is tough to talk about, scott, but this is your world. You have seen a lot of this. Here. And i am just wondering if you can give us some idea now, again, just over 28 1 2 hours into this, what is what is happening over here behind my Left Shoulder . How how is the rescueandsearch Mission Going . Right. As your segment outlined, there are void spaces in part of that collapse. There may be a v collapse. Different types of resultingvoid spaces are created. All of which, make survivable spaces. And our hope, our continuous hope, is to locate victims, alive. Remove those victims from the building. You talked about the the Crush Injuries and the crush syndrome. There are specialists there ready to treat those personnel. Its methodical, fastpaced, while, at the same time, deliberate. And with planned causes to ensure that we can continue our focus, and not miss any signs and indications of a victim being trapped in the building. When people have been using this term, this this pancake collapse. And my understanding, scott, basically, that means the structural walls. The walls that provide structure to the building. Those are probably what failed, and that causes this sort of collapsing. As opposed, to a cantilever or a lean to where it may be onestructural wall. So, with a pancake, less likely to find these voids, is what you are saying, but still possible . Correct. I mean, that video that miamidade Put Out Last Night shows some void spaces in that garage area. Shows that there is some largemetal structures that present structure support and stability to a void. So there is a combination of all four type of collapses in that rubble pile. And each of those spaces provide opportunities for a survivable area. Seventoten days, its not uncommon for someone to be found alive, and removed from a horrific event like this. And as miamidade has been across the country and and across the world, in their role as searchandrescue teams. They have been involved in this and they are highlytrained, and ready to do this work today and days to come. I want to talk, a little bit, about that timeline. But as as this Rescue Mission is is under way, i hear about these terms. They have to break certain areas, breach into certain areas, shore up areas. How how potentially dangerous is this for the rescue workers, themselves . Absolutely, dangerous. The the the building is constantly shifting. The assault of that collapse changed that dynamic. The remaining building thats, still, standing is a concern and is being, constantly, monitored for any, secondary collapses. As the rubble pile, itself, is being assessed. And being moved. Any push here, creates a reaction over there. And the guys and gals are making that assessment. They are placing wood and heavy timber in place. Thats the shoring component. To stabilize, from a solid base, which is appears to be the lowest level, that Parking Garage up, as they go. And as they cut a hole or drill a hole in the concrete or remove a piece of furniture or a filing cabinet. That, then, creates a void and they have to shore that. But thats the work that theyre doing to stabilize the building, as they go from areas where they can stand, to areas where they have to crawl. To areas where they have to skim around on their stomachs to make access. So, thats the shoring. Another example. That rainstorm that you had come through. That creates a different load of moisture. Causing that rubble pile to be, again, more impacted, additional weight, and additional opportunities for concern. Well, scott, well let you get back to work. I mean, there are so many questions that, still, remain, john. You know, the impact of the weather, scott was just mentioning. The fact that this part of the building was facing the ocean. Did that have a role . And obviously, how these searchandRescue Missions are going to continue. The the various challenges they are going to have, john. It was a fire on the scene, yesterday. Which you can believe, with all the gas lines open, the water mains. Sanjay, we are expecting to hear from officials sometime, soon, this morning to get an update. An official update on what they say is going on there. So we will get back to you, in just a moment. In the meantime, bipartisanship lives. Kinda. President biden gets a deal on infrastructure. But can he get it through a polarized congress . And over the finish line . Plus, mike pence didnt exactly knee cap his former boss but without Mentioning Trump by name, pence called the plan to decertify the election unamerican. We will have the details and the possible fallout next. What do we want for dinner . Burger. I want a sugar cookie. Wait. I want a bucket of chicken. I want. Upbeat Pop Music in background throughout neither side got everything they wanted, in this deal. Thats what it means to compromise. And it reflects something important. Reflects consensus. The heart of democracy requires consensus. As weve reaffirmed, once again, we are the United States of america. President biden celebrating the bipartisan infrastructure deal. He had democratic, and republican senators with him. The president says he is optimistic it will pass, along with a parallel bill he hopes to push through with justdemocratic votes. Now, this follows the sweepingrelief bill passed in a law in march. So, how does this compare to the legislative achievements of past president s during their first year in office . Joining us, now, cnn politics reporter and editor at large, chris cillizza. What do you got, chris . Okay. So, john, the biggest thing that you noted there, thats important, is you are seeing a massive increase in federal spending. From the coronavirus stimulus, to if this infrastructure goes through, to what might be passed through reconciliation. Trillions of dollars in spending. So lets look at what other president s have done in their first year because thats usually when we see a lot of action. All right. So we are going to start back with fdr. Okay. The new deal. Obviously, he is trying to deal with the great depression. So he is coming out of that. So he has things like, you have heard of the civilian conservation corps. Unemployment was rampant, at the time. Tennessee valley authority, economic redevelopment in an area really hard hit. These are, all, things are historically important, right . Lyndon johnson in 1965. He he is elected. The votingrights act. Probably the singlemost Landmark Piece of lemg insul legislation, as it relates to voting rights. Some of which, by the way, is being rolled back in these last years. Let me see if they gave me the power of the circle here. Yes, they did. This is interesting. Ronald reagan comes in. He wins in a landslide. In 1981, he passes the massivetax cut. This is the start of reaganomics. This is you are cutting the top rate, way down from 70 , to 50 . Put a pin in that, because i got one more screen to show you. You are going to see this pop up. Tax cuts pop up, again, with republican president s. Here it is. Okay. Quickly. Bill clinton does the family medical leave act. Obviously, a big deal. Now, this one is not legislative but he appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the supreme court. You know, obviously, a landmark thing that happened during his first term. Now, as i said, heres heres a common theme. George w. Bush. What does he do in 2001 . This is preseptember 11th, obviously. What does donald trump do . I am coming back to obama. What does donald trump do his first year in office, 2017 . Lowers the marginal rate. Okay. So, this this keeps happening. Is this what republicans do, in their first year in office. Obama. Now, i just had to note this because he doesnt sign the Affordable Care act until march, 2010. So the technically, what were fudging, a little bit, on firstyear accomplishments. But this is the defining element of Barack Obamas presidency, in many ways. His his one of his biggest legacies is the Affordable Care act, which is his biggest priority. And he pushes it through, not easily, remember, that massachusettsspecial election to replace ted the lateted kennedy. There were a lot of political impacts, both, right in the moment and beyond, from that. But thats his accomplishment. Now, what does all this tell you . And i will go back here, well look at this. New deal. Voting rights act. Reagan tax cut. And then, back here. Family clinton medical leave. Tax cut. Tax cut. What does it tell you, john . Well, it tells you that, in the first year of presidencies, particularly those elected in mandates, big elections, or those elected at times of real struggle. Covid19. Great depression, et cetera, et cetera. President s do their big things, in their first year because they have the ability, to the extent they have any ability to do these big things, to push them through. This is when they do them. So, biden getting these things passed if he can get infrastructure all the way through is consistent with what we have seen, in the past. And i will tell you, if a republican gets elected in 2024, in 2025, theres probably going to be a thing that says tax cut here, next to the next president of the United States. If history if past is prolog, john. Yeah, the thing is, though, look, to get this agreement with moderatedemocrats and republicans, they had to jettison a lot of stuff that liberaldemocrats would want, right . Yes. So, how is that going to work with getting that support from the left wing of the party . Thats right. So, i think one of the important things to say is, this is a moment. Okay . I dont think we in washington sometimes underplay. Oh, well, its not its not a done deal, yet, et cetera. It isnt a done deal, yet. But the fact they have ten senators, five democrats, five republicans, saying were for this. The white house saying were for this. If they can keep the coalition together, its likely to pass. But you are right. Liberals are going to say were not voting for this, until we see the sieze of that next package. The one that they are going to pass on a purelypartisan vote, using, as you mentioned, a tactic called reconciliation that you can use for budgetary matters, brianna. So, its not a done deal. They do, still, have to make liberals happy in this. The one thing ill say is it seems unlikely, to me, just having looked at politics. That liberals are going to tank the majorinfrastructure package, that the democratic president of the United States worked on. And spent all yesterday touting and will spend weeks and months touting, in the future. It just seems unlikely thats going to happen, in the same way republicans who didnt love everything about the trumptax cut arent going to tank that. Yeah. So, well see. I mean, if historys proven anything, its that legislative fights go in a lot of Different Directions and this one may well, too. Totally, Grae Wagree With Yo that. Will liberals be jazzed enough . I dont know, we will see. Will republicans stick to it if they are told there is this other thing that is also going to be signed in into law . Huge question. Other big news this morning. The former Vice President of the United States, mike pence, delivered his strongest rebuke to date of formerpresident trump. Pence contradicted the big lie, and said he was proud of what he did on january 6th. Allowing the Election Results to be certified. Now, there are those in our party, who believed that, in my position as Presiding Officer over the joint session that, i possess the authority to reject or return electoral votes, certified by the states. But the constitution provides the Vice President with nosuch authority. There is almostno idea more unamerican than the notion that any, one person could choose the american president. Cnns whitney wild joins us now with more. That last sentence there is sort of the harshest thing mike pence has ever said about donald trump. Notably. Did not say his name. Right. Trying to thread a very tough needle here. This morning, this republican politician pushing back against the base. Pushing back against the president formerpresident , himself, and thats exactly what formerVice President mike pence did yesterday. Speaking at the reaganpresident ial library, pence told the crowd he will always be proud of his role in affirming the Election Results on january 6th, that followed the deadly riot of Trump Supporters at the u. S. Capitol. He even called the effort to decertify the election, quote, unamerican. His commitment to the truth enraged Capitol Rioters who chanted, hang mike pence, for failing to perpetuate the big lie. Formerpresident trump has continued to spread the lie that he, somehow, won the election. We know. Weve said it a million times, at this point. He did not win that election. Take a listen to what else pence said. I understand the disappointment many feel about the last election. But, you know, theres more at stake than our party and our political fortunes. In this moment. If we lose faith in the constitution, we wont just lose elections. Well lose our country. He didnt address president trump, by name. But still, tried to identify himself with the trump administrations agenda. Particularly, on immigration, border control, and trade. Again, i cannot stress enough how rare it is for pence to contradict president trump. This is the first time we have seen anything even remotely close to this and its pretty much the only clear break he has had with the president he loyally served for four years but he is trying to have it all ways. He is. I mean, i have a few things to say about mike pence. Number one. You know, mike pence sat by, quietly, while the former president lied about the election for two months after the november election, right . So, mike pence did the bare minimum that he could do, not to overthrow the government. And basically, he gets credit for that, he gets credit for the constitution, what it clearly says the Vice President s role is that day. So credit to him for that. Not for the profile in courage that he sort of, i think, is trying to claim here. The other thing is i dont know that there is a needle to thread for mike pence, at this point. Right . I just dont know what, on earth, he could do that would ingratiate himself with the trump people. There is just no space for him there, in that. Maybe, im wrong. Theres no theres no gray area, anymore. You know, they want to live in an alternate reality and theres no no gradation between that and this reality, which is where we all live, where the rest of us live. I think thats completely true when you are talking about republicans who have their eyes on a political future. And perhaps, a run for the presidency. They arent trying to, as as you said, it is threading a needle. But like, it is a needle that doesnt exist. And i wonder, you know, what is pence doing here . Is this the long game of he is trying to promote, kind of, conservative principles . Like, traditionalconservative principles and priorities. And he is taking whats really like i mean, yeah, he is contradicting trump but this is not fullthroated contradiction. This is lightly disagreeing and he has to, right . I mean, again, he did choose to say this at the Reagan Library yesterday. So this is a thing. I mean, he did take a stand. I am curious to see if he does this again. I am curious to see if he does a Constitution Tour where he goes and educates Trump Supporters about what actually happened, why he did what he did. Well see. Notable moment, to be sure. Yeah. Lot of time left until he i guess, if he really does want to make a run for it. Hes got plenty of time to figure it out. Maybe, he is playing a long time that we dont see. I dont know. Well see. Thank you so much. You bet. The search for victims in this hugebuilding collapse in florida. Its been hampered by rain, by wind, all kinds of issues. Introducing the allelectric lyriq. Lighting the way. Im sanjay gupta. We are back here, in surfside, florida, where this desperate searchandRescue Mission is ongoing here. You can sort of see this, over my Left Shoulder. Light is starting to break. We know that rain had been happening here, since about 10 00 last night. Stopped overnight. Theres been some heavy gusts of wind. And the weather, so dramatically, impacts these searchandRescue Missions. Chad myers joins us now. Im wondering, what does the day look like, Going Forward . Today is the best day of the next three, sanjay. Although, this isnt going to be anything perfect, by any stretch. Winds out of the east at 14. Gusting to 23. Every time a storm or shower comes onshore, thats when the wind will get higher. And thats, obviously, when the threat of that building shift. You have a building thats standing up there, barely. You, also, have rebar hanging off with pieces of concrete, still, stuck to it. You talk about a 23mileperhour wind or even 25 in a storm. That is going to try to try to shake that thing, and that would put anyfirst responder, any responder, down on the ground, really, in some j jeopardy. So we are going to watch these storms as they come through to today, probably somewhere around noon, 1 00 would be the next, bigger storm. And then, after midnight, tonight, more weather in the forecast. And those winds dont die down, in fact, for tomorrow. They go up just a little bit, sanjay. Yeah. You know, chad, i dont know if theres an answer to this. But you and i have, both, covered, again, these natural disasters. These buildings down there. I mean, they withstand hurricanes. Weve been in those situations. I mean, this is really its just shocking to me. Again, i dont know if there is an answer here but does anything sort of strike you about this . It is the oceanside of the building that sort of collapsed. I have never seen anything quite like this at least in this country. Well, its the salt air. When you go to the beach, even if you walk with a pair of flipflops in the salt water, you want to take them home and rinse them off in a freshwater washdown. Otherwise, they are going to deteriorate. Building and concrete and walkways would deteriorate and that salt air, a lot worse than it would be just in fresh air or freshwater. So, yeah, that doesnt surprise me. Although, obviously, this event takes anyone by surprise, by any stretch of the imagination. Ch chad, thank you very much. John, you know, i i have to say, it is it is, obviously, heartbreaking to see this. We are obviously in the middle of these dramatic searchandRescue Missions. But theres going to be some lessons here, i think, as to exactly what happened here and trying to prevent it in other pl buildings like it. Absolutely. Theres clearly knowledge that there is some kind of risk here because the code in florida is that, after 40 years, a building needs to be checked out, and reengineered for this type of thing. For potential corrosion. For potential risk of being near the salt air. And this building is exactly40 years old and was due for just that type of maintenance. One other point here. This building was built before the hurricaneandrew codes. Which i know you are so familiar with. Building codes in florida drastically changed after hurricane andrew. Unclear whether those enhanced codes would have made a difference here. We just dont know. So much more we have to learn, sanjay. We are going to get back to you in just a second. Behind sanjay, these rescuers have been working around the clock. Moving, piece by piece, rubble trying to find some of the 99 people still unaccounted for in that tower. Lets get more insight on the searchandrescue efforts. I am joined by chief dave downey. He is the former miamidade fire rescue chief. Chief, thanks so much for being with us. Give us a sense of exactly what the workers are doing, at this moment. Well, good morning, john. Thanks for having me. They have been working since the collapse in affecting rescues. First, they took the people off the rubble, those who are lightly trapped. All through the day and night last night, they have been conducting more meticulous void searches and area searches. Also, they have been trying to stabilize the areas that need to be stabilized. We had heard earlier about, you know, the danger of a secondary collapse. Theyve got monitoring devices on the existing building. Paying attention to any movement of that building. They are also trying to secure some of those some of that hanging debris. So, the rescuers can continue to operate, continue to do the void searches. Today, were moving in more searchandrescue personnel. And we are, also, moving in some equipment to start a very precise delayering to lift up some of those heavier slabs. And again, start to uncover any, potential void spaces. So this is an ongoing, very deliberate, very precise process of search and rescue. Chief, you know the area well. What are the risks theyre dealing with this morning . Well, i think, you highlighted them, just before i came on the air. And thats the weather. You know, fortunately, were not worried about any aftershocks, as weve seen in in earthquake regions. But the wind plays a major role in this Rescue Operations. And the wind load on the existing structures can present a problem. The rain presents problems because we need to make sure that were channeling that water. The rescuers have been wat dewatering areas of the structure to make sure it stays as minimal as possible. But those are the big elements and then, obviously, the heat and humidity. Although, rescuers are trained and experienced and from that area. But making sure the rescuers stay hydrated. The rescuers are paying attention to working in these working these long hours in the heat and the humidity. Yeah, you have to stay alert for any sound. Any, possible movement. And you have to stay alert, so you protect yourself from the risks that are, very much, present. Formerchief dave downey, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Thanks for having me. The first Capitol Rioter to be sentenced in the january6th attack is a woman who pleaded guilty to trespassing in the capitol. On the day of the attack, she post on facebook that it was the best day ever, according to her court filings. But in court, this week, she stood before a judge. She cried. She apologized to the court, and to the american people. And he gave her three years of probation, and a 500 fine, instead of prison time. Saying that she didnt participate in the violence. But then, just a day later why did you go to the capitol that day . I went to support donald trump. To show my support. To show support for a completeandutter lie, to be clear, that the election could be overturned . Where i was at, we seen nobody damage anything. And people were, actually, very polite. I had a young man accidentally knock my phone out of my hands and hes, like, oh, excuse me. And he hurried up and picked up my phone, and made sure it was okay. If anybody bumped into anybody, it was, excuse me. And people were very polite. And there was no nobody was breaking anything. And it was calm enough, that people were actually walking out of the capitol building, that worked there. Walked right past us. And they had no fear on their face, at all. People died. Officers were beaten. They were called pigs, effing traitors. The capitol was vandalized. But people were polite, she says. Nobody damaged anything. Not that she could see, anyway. Sure. By the way, in court, before this interview, she also described how shes a changed person, because she watched shin shindlers list and read just mercy. I read the books. It didnt bother me because im not racist. I would recommend anybody read just mercy because it was a very emotional book but it didnt bother me. I was more than willing to read em because im not racist. Her lawyer told new day that she makes her clients pick from a reading list, in order to take them as clients. Unclear, though, why watching shindlers list or reading just mercy may have preevented her from going to the capitol that day. But whatever. Riot, in air quotes because that is, after all, fox, one of the preferred networks of the allegedCapitol Rioters. According to a lawyer defending at least one of them, fox instead of hardhitting questions about her involvement or what she was apparently remorseful for. She got the hero treatment. Thank you for telling this story. And this is just i its like i cant even believe im hearing any of this. A charge for parading through the capitol. For that, youre held for two days, lose your job. And obviously, incredibly trau traumatic. But glad you read a couple, decent books, i guess. Thank you. That is the reaction for a white defendant, charged with illegally entering the capitol building, as congress was acce accepting the certification of a secure election. But this is how Laura Ingram Described Black Defendants who broke into buildings during a riot. What began, as peaceful protesting ended up in a very counterproductive and even criminal place. Excusing Criminal Behavior as somehow justified when its carried out in response to police brutality, or any, other abuse. Only ends up making a bad situation, worse. Because it lowers the bar for everybody. Antifa. Black lives matter. The communists. And their allies are executing the plan they wrote about four or five years ago. Just go back and read what they wrote in the manifestos that they wrote, including black lives matter. They want to destroy our government. Black lives matter wants to come and take your house away from you. They want to take your property away from you. Now, this is where it all happened. May 27th. Two days after the killing of george floyd. This is the famous door, where everyone was coming in and out during the nights of the riots and the looting. They took as much as they could, out that door. Thats right. She even parachuted into minneapolis to highlight the riot so that she would have some props for show and tell. But when it comes to the capitol, officer fanone, who was assaulted and tortured that day, told me that he cant get booked on fox to tell his story. This is the same fox, where you heard this same host, recently, call to defund the United States military for being too woke, as generals defended diversity in their efforts to root out domestic extremism in their ranks. We are sending our tax dollars to this military. To an attempt to weed out socalled extremists, which just means conservativeevangelical, as far as i can tell. We are paying for that . Well, why why is congress not saying were not going to give you a penny, until all of this is eradicated from the Military Budget . Nothing. This is my offer to you. Nothing. Its not just ingram, who is disparaging military brass. She is copycatting this guy. Milley got the job because he is obsequious. He knows who to suck up to and he is more than happy to do it.
