So the house taking Decisive Action from gop Marjorie Taylor greene stripping her of house assignments. Punishing her for pushing lies about 9 11 and the Deadly School shootings and embracing the Dangerous Qanon conspiracy theer re theory. Lawyers refusing a request by house Impeachment Managers that trump testify at his upcoming trial in the senate and a major move by Johnson Johnson in the battle against coronavirus asking the fda for an Emergency Use Authorization of its singleshot covid19 vaccine. So as you can tell, we have a lot to talk about. I want to bring in now cnns white house correspondent, mr. John harwood. Thanks for joining me. Ill start with john since hes the only one here. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor green officially removed from her committee assignments. Only 11 republicans voted to strip her of her assignments. Where does this leave the gop . Reporter the gop doesnt feel like they can afford to alienate people like Marjorie Taylor greene and those who follow her. The Republican Party has become dependent, heavily dependent to win elections, to compete in elections on the energy, intensity and the turnout of a lot of blue collar white voters, especially evangelicals, people in small towns and rural areas who feel alienated from the way American Society is changing. Societys becoming more diverse, more racially diverse, more religiously diverse, less white and they think the cultures passing them by. They think the economy is passing them by and a lot of those people have turned in recent years to more extreme political messages. We saw it during the obama years after the first Black President was elected. You saw the rage of the Tea Party Movement and that has continued and you simply have a you know, its not all qanon or any particular group, but its the anger and its the bitterness and the alienation and its a very broad swath of the republican electorate that cant turn away. What you said is fascinating. Every study shows what youre saying is exactly right. I think we need to study why thats happening or more thought needs to be put in as to why thats happening. How is greene, by the way, responding to this house vote tonight . Reporter well, greene is appealing to the sense of shared grievance of those voters and republican politicians as well. You know, the most common thing you hear from republican politicians and voters alike is theyre out to get us. The medias out to get us. Big business is out to get us. The drift of American Society is taking away our freedoms and our rights. So she made the argument that, well, if they can come after me, they can come after anybody. Well, shes an extreme an extremist and the fact that shes able to appeal to that common sentiment tells you how radicalized the Republican Party has become. John harwood, always a pleasure. Ill see you soon. Thank you. So i want to bring in now Amanda Carpenter and doug hi. Hello. Good to see both of you. Amanda. So, listen, youve been getting a lot of attention for the things youre saying on this show and im sure in other places as well. Youve been very candid about how you feel and not holding back. Youve been saying for a while its not just a few conspiracy theorists, this is the Republican Party now and theyre fine with it. Todays vote confirms just how right you are. Yeah. These are things i dont want to be right about. I will say that there is a sense that there is a little bit more fight than there was when donald trump was president and pushing back on this movement, but heres the conflict. Say for a never trumper like me, say theres a small never trump faction within the party, there was the hope that after Donald Trump Left Office things would reset, maybe go back to normal, but thats just not the case. The Republican Party is largely clinging to trumpism in the way that he defined his candidacy, his campaigns with politically driven lies, okay . So whether its Marjorie Taylor greene today or whats going to happen in the senate with impeachment next week, the party has to confront these politically driven lies. So far i feel like theyve been hiding behind these fake arguments about procedure, whether its constitutionality, we dont like the fact that democrats strip a republican of their committee assignments. This is coming. They wont look back and say where was the republicans on whether donald trump should be convicted as a former president. Theyre going to say, are you guys still doing all of this lying stuff about elections . That is coming and that is the central thing why were in this mess. Doug, listen, amandas youre still a republican, right . Are you still a republican . Im still the same person. I still have the same idea about limited government, freedom, blah, blah, blah. Im not in the Republican Party, im not a democrat. Im not i dont have a republican tattoo im getting removed or anything. Doug, how do you feel as a member of the Republican Party, that overwhelmingly gave their support to a woman who harassed School Shooting survivors . I tweeted earlier that i was ashamed for my country, for my party and for congress. When we see a member of congress boldly saying, being facetious there, that i believe 9 11 happened, i believe School Shootings are real, that were at the bottom of the barrel. We know the bottom keeps getting lower and lower. Look, i think the republican arguments on process are fine except assassination is a bit more important than dealing with precedent and process. The reality for republicans which they should remember is ill say two things. One, we know were going to see and hear more from Marjorie Greene taylor what she said in the past and in the future. Two, i didnt have the same hope that amanda did, that once trump went away things would get better. To Me Donald Trump was as much a cause as a symptom. To me it goes back to the primary politics that republicans face. I suffered through that when i worked through eric cantor who was teed up to be the next speaker of the house but lost his primary. That happened before donald trump. We are somewhat in a transitioning to a post trump phase. When you set the forest on fire, you still have a lot of Trees Smoldering and thats whats happening now. Amandas a Glass Half Full woman. Doug, i find it interesting when its a public vote 10 house senators vote to impeach trump, 11 vote to remove greene. When it is a secret vote 145 members vote to keep liz cheney in leadership. How do you explain this difference . Very easy. It goes down to their voters and how theyre scared of primary politics. When i worked in house leadership, don, we used to refer to this as the vote no hope yes caucus. They would vote no. I know this is a good bill, i should support it but i cant because ill get hurt in my district about it. This happened time and time and time again on things that arent make or break from a legislator. No ones lost their labor seat because they voted for the hhs appropriations bill. Theyre so worried about the primary politics, worried about losing in the spring and summer. Sounds like republicans are in the sunken place right now. Or, i dont know, hostages. Its weird. Amanda, is this all about keeping trump happy . We know he has been calling members of congress. Hes even summoned Kevin Mccarthy to florida. Is it making trump happy . Yeah, is this keeping him happy . Yeah. Im sure he likes the fact that he has such influence and control over the party when hes not even there, but i think the Biggest Development that will be happening honestly is what happens to fox news and how theyre held responsible for the big election lies that we told. The biggest influencer in republican politics is the Conservative Media Complex that drives a lot of this from the qanon chat boards, facebook groups, to fox news and the primetime screens. That has more influence in the primaries than probably any other factor, more than donald trump. Ah. When the new lawsuit that was filed against fox says they invented a villain, i looked at that and said, bingo. Thats exactly what is going on. That is the fear factor that drives republican politics. So whatever happens, if there is a way that those people who told those lies, they peddled those conflicts are held responsible, that will have much more influence than donald trump could ever hope to have. Its interesting. When i saw that cross the wire i thought about Everything Trump Touches dies. Look, hes gotten people in trouble. This lawsuit is enormous. All of those people who followed him and spread those conspiracy theories, its because they followed that whackiness. Doug, i digress now. 199 republicans now on record voting for Marjorie Taylor greene. Democrats are gleeful about this ahead of 2022. Should they be . What are the implications here . Well, maybe politically gleeful but on the substance not gleeful because obviously its terrible topics of what she said and will continue to say most likely. Politically, democrats know, theyve learned from recent history. When republicans have had candidates who have been terrible like a todd akin or Richard Mourdock who cost us not just two senate seats n 2014, but allowed republicans to be tagged as being antiwoman, having to answer questions they didnt want to answer about, Marjorie Taylor greene could well be the face of the republican thats right 2022. If youre running in a competitive seat, you dont want to be talking about Marjorie Taylor greene, why youre running for office, youll be saddled by this. Amanda, doug, always appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thank you. Congressman jamie ras kin, the lead democratic impeachment manager responding to the president s refusal to testify. Raskin said this speaks volumes and plainly establishes an adverse inference supporting his guilt. Joining me now cnn legal analyst, ellie hoenig. Good evening, don. Bold move by democrats. Whats the strategy here . Indeed. Heres why its such a bold move. Theyre calling out Donald Trumps bluster. We know donald trump loves to talk tough. On twitter, his favorite cable news stations. The house said come into the senate, put your hand on the bible and take an oath and you can testify. In his four years in office, donald trump had a lot of things to talk about but he never testified under oath. He dodged it in the ukraine and hes not willing to back up his bluster. This 2. 7 billion lawsuit joined by smart matic. Theyre accusing fox news, rudy giuliani, Sidney Powell about lying about the condition about pushing the big lie that the election was stolen. I want to read this. This is from the filing. Amanda mentioned it just moments ago. It says, they needed a villain. They needed someone to blame. They needed someone whom they could get others to hate without any true villain, defendants invented one. Defendants decided to make Smart Ma Particu Matic the villain. What do you make of their case . Is it a strong one . It is, don. What they have to show, smartmatic, is that fox news and others made false statements and that they made those knowing they are false or reckless as the falsity. The reason you heard that theory is theyre trying to explain why. What was in it for fox. Why would fox knowingly and so many anchors there knowingly make these false statements . Well, because they want a narrative, they want a villain. Theres consequences for that. This is a very smart lawsuit. They will get behind the scenes, what did they know . What are they saying about should we keep doing this . Is this true . Is this false . This is going to be ugly for fox. Wow. I want you to listen to some of what was said on fox. Here it is. Lets turn to smartmatic and dominion. Are they or are they not linked . Oh, theyre definitely linked. I would call them inextricably intertwined. The way it works the votes can be changed on the ground. President trumps lead was so great at that point they had to stop the counting and come in and backfill the results. Theyre using a Venezuelan Company as the vote counter, which is known for changing votes. And also known to have the most insecure computers in this business. I think rudy, were going to have to because they want to cheat. Okay. Thats just some of it, right . That was fox business. A spokesperson for fox tells cnn this, we are proud of our 2020 election and will vigorously defend this lawsuit in court. I want to know what you think of that statement because the company says smartmatic says that all that is demonstrably nauls and fox was motivated by ratings. What do you think of the statement . Defend away if youre fox. Youre going to have to defend those statements that we just heard rudy, Sidney Powell and lou dobbs saying. I dont think they can unless they know something 60 judges around the country and the fbi dont know. What were about to see with impeachment, the smartmatic lawsuit, even the Marjorie Taylor greene, there has to be such thing as truth. Not everything is true if you say it enough times, if you repeat it enough times, if youre strident enough. That is the unifying theme. We need to get back to a place where there is some concept of objective truth. Ellie hoenig, appreciate it. Always a pleasure. Thanks, don. You would think Marjorie Taylor greene would lie low after getting her wrist slapped today. No. Well tell you what she is treesing tomorrow. Republicans have yet to offer a clear and unambiguous declaration that Political Violence is unacceptable and has no place in their ranks. And ive heard too much about process and not enough about accountability. So the house voting to remove Marjorie Taylor greene from her committee assignments. 11 voted to hold her accountable. The other 199 making it clear where they stand on conspiracy theorists. Joe kennedy is here. Hes now a cnn commentator. Welcome to the family. Thank you. You served with many of these people. Were you surprised by their vote . No. I think disappointed, don, but not surprised. Look, i heard your panel earlier. I think doug hit it on the head. Look, youve got an awful lot of members there that wish the trajectory of the Republican Party were different, but it is what it is and theyre going to do what they need to do to hold on to their own seats, to do what they can to hold on to power and to think that if theyre somehow able to come to keep a donald trump base motivated within their ranks, that they can reclaim a majority in the house and senate. The question obviously to ask is at what cost . These arent just words. This isnt just comments that somebody made that passed. You have a member of congress that has glorified assassination and will not apologize. She distanced herself from the comments, but she will not apologize. And i think if you think of it that way, about what it means to be a representative of the united states, to be able to travel internationally and wear that badge of honor but representing the people of this country and to have somebody do so in our name, in your name and in my name and not be willing to say, you know what, i shouldnt shouldnt try to entice assassination . Yeah. I dont know. Yeah. And on top of that, she is fundraising off of that. Doesnt seem remotely contrite at all. Does it bother you that she is making a mockery of what it means to serve in the congress . Of course it does. You know, i think i will tell you i was on with a number of my former colleagues today, even republicans that i served with, but for those democrats, anybody that thinks that anyone is taking any joy out of this, no one is. No democrat is celebrating having to remove a sitting member of congress from committee. No one feels like you have a choice. Youve got a Republican Leadership that has decided not to do this, and given that fact, what else are we supposed to do . What else are my former colleagues supposed to do . What is congress, what is the body supposed to do . Hey, it sets a precedence. Yes, there might be a challenging precedent there. If the precedent is as a member of congress, you should not promote assassination. If you do so, there will be accountability. I dont know, man. I think that that sounds like a pretty lobar to have to enforce. Unfortunately republicans chose not to enforce. Indeed. I want to get your take on President Bidens Foreign Policy speech. Take a listen. America is back. Diplomacy is back at the center of our Foreign Policy. American alliances are our greatest asset. Leading with diplomacy means Standing Shoulder to shoulder with our allies and key partners once again. I think its an important question here. How difficult is it going to be to repair the u. S. Standing abroad. Especially since a month ago the world watched in horror as americans attacked our own capitol . Don, i dont think you can under estimate the scope of the challenge before the Biden Administration and a state department, one that needs revitalization, needs to bring a lot of folks back into it. You saw that commitment from the president today and obviously from someone who has been at the leading edge of u. S. Foreign policy for literally his entire career. All of that is a good thing. The place to look also here which i give the Biden Administration credit for, they understand the linkage between Foreign Policy and domestic. Youre never strong abroad if youre not strong at home. A real challenge is making sure the American Public understands the alliance and empowers the American Public. What republicans have been able to do is make sure those gains from capture from u. S. Did i people si ends up going to a smaller and smaller slice at the top rather than being empowering a broader base middle class and Working Class to be able to capture those gains. Thats the real challenge that i think a Biden Administration confronts, not the willingness of others to engage with the united states. There are plenty of countries around the world that have been begging for that. To be able to take down the blockages that Mitch Mcconnell will so clearly try to put up to inhibit that growth in revitalizing america. Thank you, representative kennedy. Good to have you on. Well see you soon. My honor. Proud boys, qanon, oath keepers, all of these and more right wing groups stormed the capitol. Trump swarmed the country with the biggest threat. Trump wanted you to think otherwise. Antifa. Antifa. Somebody has to do something about antifa. And get back to your rhythm. Feel the power. Beat the symptoms fast. Even as they grew under President Trumps presidency, the former president wanted all of us to believe antifa was the real danger. Cnns Alex Marquardt has the story. Reporter as it grew over Donald Trumps term emboldened and encouraged by him, the Trump Administration tried to get the public to believe there was a greater threat. Antifa. Reporter with the black lives matter exploding, some violence and destruction gave top Trump Officials an opening to allege that antifa and other elements from the left were in fact more dangerous. It was a bad group of people. Very, very bad, very dangerous group of people and we are doing a big number on antifa. Theyre bad. Reporter when it came to extremism, then attorney general bill barr, the countrys top Law Enforcement official amitriand his boss, the president i talked to every Law Enforcement officer where theres been major violence and they all identified antifa as the ramrod. Reporter The President S Antifa Effort was at odds with what Homeland Security and the fbi were seeing. Christopher wray risked his job making clear that he saw White Supremacists making up the bulk of the domestic threat. Within the Domestic Terrorism bucket category as a whole, racially motivated violent extremism is i think the biggest bucket within that larger group and within the racially motivated extremist bucket, people ascribing to some kind of white supremacist type ideology is certainly the biggest chunk of that. Reporter a department of Homeland Security whistleblower accused dhs officials of blocking a threat assessment report. When it finally came out in october, it called White Supremacy the most persistent and lethal threat. Chad wolff, a trump appointee, tried to have it both waste. We talk about White Supremist extremist and we talk about an arcist extremism. We said in September Of 2019 antifa and concerns of the department were seen at that point. The New York Times reports trump aides suppressed the term Domestic Terror. Barr would encourage prosecutors to be more aggressive in bringing cases against rioters and was frustrated when they didnt. The administration looked for links to International Terrorist groups. Barr told cnn in a statement there was no prioritization of antifa. The fbi already had a Robust Program to combat program for White Supremacy and nationalism. I wanted there to be one for antifa and antifalike groups. In the first eight weeks of 2020, White Supremacists and far right accounted for 2 3 of the Domestic Terror plots and attacks. Fbi agents maintained their work on far right extremists including those who were going to kidnap gretchen whitmer. Fbi director wray said antifa was a real thing saying there were investigations. We look at antifa as more of an ideology or a movement than an organization. To be clear, we do have quite a number of properly predicated Domestic Terrorism investigations into violent an narcoticist extremists, any number of whom selfidentify with the antifa movement. For that the president lashd out on twitter accusing the fbi of letting antifa get away with murder. When he asked if he condemned the proud boys, he did the opposite. Proud boys stand back and stand by, ill tell you what, somebodys got to do something about antifa and the left. This is not a right wing problem, this is we all know the proud boys were among the insurrectionists at the capitol. At least 11 have been charged with federal crimes. Since january 6th and the start of the Biden Administration, focus has returned to the threat of far right domestic violent extremists. Now a major priority for the white house, the Intelligence Community and the new secretary of Homeland Security. The threat is persistent. It was exemplified. It was illustrated horrifically by the events of january 6th. The threat of Domestic Terrorism preceded that terrible day and it persists today. Reporter they face the daunting task of how to label and crack down on the extremist groups. On wednesday canada labeled the proud boys and other groups as terrorist organizations. The white house says they wont make a decision until after the intelligence report. January 6th showed us the very real threat that they have posed. Alex, thank you so much. Next, about 1. 3 million vaccines getting into arms a day. Johnson johnson submitting their vaccine approval. Will that number go way up soon . So as of tonight in the battle against covid19, the cdc saying it has distributed more than 57 million vaccine doses and more than 35 million doses have been administered and breaking news, the u. S. Could be on the verge of getting a third vaccine, Johnson Johnson asking the fda for an Emergency Use Authorization for its single shot covid vaccine. Lets discuss now with dr. Rick bright, a former adviser. Doctor, i appreciate you joining us. Its great news but everyone is being theyre excited but with some caution because we still have a long way to go. Thank you for joining us. Today Johnson Johnson officially asking the u. S. Food Drug Administration for that Emergency Use Authorization. And unlike the pfizer, moderna vaccines, this one is just one single shot and it can be kept up to three months in regular refrigerated temperatures. No deep freeze needed. What does this mean . Don, it means a lot. Thanks for having me back on. Its good to see you again. This is really a completely different type of approach for vaccinating people as quickly as possible. Imagine the complex tities wev already been talking about trying to get two doses in people and back in line two or three weeks later, people concerned about what the adverse events might be after that second dose of vaccine. You dont have to worry about that with a single dose vaccine. One and done. Low cost. Refrigerated. Johnson johnson is committed to making i think up to a billion doses by the end of the year year. Weve already ordered 100 million doses theyre going to deliver to the u. S. By the end of the summer. Thats going to open the flood gates for people to get vaccinated even faster which is more important at this time of the outbreak with new variants coming our way. Do you expect j js vaccine is going to be authorized . If so, how soon before we see it getting into the arms of people . Well, the meeting has been set for february 26th. The fda set the meeting for their external Scientific Advisory panel for february 26th. They took the data review and a few days afterwards the cdc has to have their meeting and final review and recommendation. So i would guess it would be somewhere by the end of february if it gets authorized by the fda that it would have the green light to be distributed and the vaccination can start soon after that. Maybe the first week of march. Okay. Lets talk about global phase 3 trial data, the j j Vaccine Efficacy against moderate and severe diseases. That was 66 . 72 in the u. S. 85 effective in preventing hospitalizations. Are those numbers good . The numbers are really good. If you look at the prevention of death, prevention of hospitalizations, no one died in this trial that got the vaccine. No hospitalizations. Over 85 of the people were protected from that severe, most severe disease. Didnt go to the hospital. Thats really fantastic. The other numbers i wouldnt get too mixed up about. Theyre as good, i think, as the numbers we would see from the other vaccines if the other vaccines had been tested in the same conditions at the same time against those variant viruses. The Johnson Johnson phase 3 study faced a stiff hurdle when they took and collect dad at that in south africa because we know that those south african those variants that were identified in south africa actually escape the immunity from these vaccines just a bit. So, therefore, i dont think any of the vaccines if they were tested in that setting would have as high numbers as we were seeing in some of those. This is a really good outcome. Sorry. Were you finished your thought . I said this is a really good outcome. I would focus on the reduction of death, reduction of hospitalizations. This vaccine can help save your life. Okay. The logical question to follow what you said is how readily can these vaccines be updated to protect against new variants if that needs to be done . You know, the nice thing with the new technology such as Messenger Rna and the Aden Know Virus Technology that Johnson Johnson is based on, you can make a new Variant Vaccine pretty quickly, it just takes a few weeks or a few days actually to modify. Within probably a few weeks to a couple of months to start manufacturing large volumes of those vaccines. We want to make sure that if we vaccinate everyone with the vaccines we have now, however, then the virus wont have room to mutate and have as many people to infect and to further spread those variants around the country. So the biggest goal right now is to vaccinate people with what we have and if they have to switch, i think within a few months we would have a different vaccine out in the marketplace. The fda will require some additional data, clinical data, but they can make that fast. Always a pleasure. Dr. Rick bright. Hope to see you soon. Thanks. Have a good night. More than 100 bills being filed across the country to restrict voting. Why are they making it harder for people to vote . Voting rights are being put to the test in more than 2 dozen states across the country. Since Donald Trumps loss in november, more than 100 bills are moving through legislatures in at least 28 states aimed at changing Election Procedures and limiting voter access. Republicans are intent on changing election laws. Heres National Correspondent diane gallagher. Reporter georgia still has voting on its mind. Just one month after democrats pulled off a Surprise Senate sweep, then three months after President Biden turned the Southern State blue, republicans are reacting with a slew of proposed legislation. Its definitely a kneejerk reaction. Reporter nearly a dozen bills that could make it harder to vote have already been introduced in the state senate. Headline grabbing proposal requiring two copies of photo i. D. To vote by mail. Others with automatic voter registration, use of Ballot Drop Boxes and no excuse absentee voting. I do believe that voting in this country is a privilege and its a right. Its a right as well, but it ought to mean enough where you can put forth a little bit of effort in trying to cast your ballot. Reporter what some call effort others call suppression. We definitely see it as a way to keep the democrats from voting easily. In the end it really hurts everyone. Were not taking away anybodys rights, but what we are asking is we want a fair and honest election that doesnt have all of the allegations that we have in this election cycle. Reporter those allegations, baseless claims of fraud, were promoted by jones who was recently stripped of a committee chairmanship. That decision made by his fellow republicans, the states lieutenant governor. Republicans have a Credibility Problem because were having to carry the baggage of all of that information. In a statement, fair fight founded by Stacey Abrams called the bills an unhinged set of voter oppression. Its not just georgia. Other states where former President Trump pushed Election Fraud lies to protect his lawsuits like arizona and pennsylvania are also seeing a surge in election reform bills sponsored by republican lawmakers. In arizona one proposal would even allow the legislature to overright the Secretary Of State Certification of the electoral votes. I think it is pretty clear there are some politicians who would rather put barriers in front of the ballot boxes versus competing for voters. Reporter at least 28 states have introduced prefiled or carry over more than 100 bills that would restrict voting access, more than triple what was filed this time last year. One of the biggest targets, minority voters. When elections like 2020 offer more ways to vote, turnout in communities of color tends to increase. Eliminating options and adding extra steps has been shown to decrease participation. Having one more barrier in front of the ballot box may be a reason why you vote or dont vote. Reporter of course these are just proposals and bills right now, but the whole process that still has yet to happen at the state level, but the pendulum, don, swings pretty heavily in the other directions. According to the brennan center, more than 400 bills and pieces of legislation have already been introduced this year to actually expand or include access to voting, in some cases theyre simply making the pandemic protocols from last year permanent. Diane, thank you so much. Appreciate that. Thank you for watching, everyone. Our coverage continues. Everyone
