Today in the broader house regarding Marjorie Taylor greene . Democrats have the majority. We have at least one republican saying theyre vote to remove. So it seems Fait Accompli for her. Reporter this is something hardly ever done. The house taking action to strip a member of an opposing partys Committee Assignments. That is something that could create a precedent that future majorities could certainly replicate. But the democrats say they have to move forward now because of the dangerous views that Marjorie Taylor greene has expressed over her last couple of years, whether it is about the massacres at the Parkland High School in florida, or if it is about the promoting the qanon conspiracy theory. They say there is no room on congressional committees for her and it is time for the house to act. And that is exactly what they will do this afternoon. A simple majority will vote to remove her from the House Budget Committee and the house education committee. Now this came after the republicans refused to take action themselves. The republican leader Kevin Mccarthy tried to offer a compromise of sort, Swap Committees and the democrats said that was not good enough. They wanted her off all commit i yz altogether. And last night during the more than four hour Conference Meeting, a small portion focused on Marjorie Taylor greene. Mostly about liz cheney. But Marjorie Taylor greene walked back some of her views and Kevin Mccarthy who talked to us late last night suggested that that is good enough for him. She said she was wrong. She has reached out in other ways and forms. I think everybody should hear that. She has expressed that shes put it out from News Agencies and others. I think it would be helpful if you could hear exactly what she told all of us. Denouncing qanon, i dont know in i say it right. I dont know what it is. Reporter and he does know what it is. He said that qanon has no place in the Republican Party. He said that before and not last night. But the republicans did appreciate what she said privately. They applauded her and stood up and gave her a round of applause, im told but say number of them i talked to afterwards including mccarthy said she should say it publicly and denounce the things she said privately. No indication that she will do that and democrats regardless are moving ahead. So lauren, what is interesting is mccarthy standing up for Marjorie Taylor greene, like she doesnt really mean it or any this any more. But that is . Stark contrast to what she tchoe to tell the Washington Examiner in an interview. This occurred before the Conference Meeting last night. But i do think that is important to read you sort of what her mindset was going into that Conference Meeting. She said, quote, and House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy and the leadership and everyone is proving that they are all talk and not about action and theyre all just about Doing Business As Usual in washington. And so what is the difference between them and the democrats. There isnt a difference. She also goes on to say if shes going to lose her committees, she is going to have more spare time to help try to foster an environment where conservatives could win in some of the house races. She said, quote, im going to push the party to the right of where it is, where they need to be and hold these people accountable and help people all over the country, hold them accountable because that is what needs to happen. Now we should underscore that this meeting yesterday that went about four hours was intended to try to bring about some unity for the republican conference. When mccarthy came out, he talked about the unit and being port to the future of the party. He said this is a big enough tent to include both Marjorie Taylor greenes views and liz cheneys views and i think that this interview underscores one of the pieces of that Going Forward which is that you have a house member who clearly thinks that her views should be the future of the Republican Party. Jim and poppy. A big enough tent to include people who lie about the results of the 2020 election and those who dont. It is as simple as that. Manu, so liz cheney, there clearly werent the votes to remove her. Far fewer than in the Freedom Caucus thought that they had or said that they had. Path forward for her in leadership . That is a big question. Lets say what happens in 2022, the republicans take the majority and there is a good chance that they could win the majority next year. Where does she lie at that point. Kevin mccarthy will run for speaker and will she have enough support to stay in the leadership position. That remains to be seen. This is what one thing about last night this is a Secret Ballot election. That means members could vote however they want without any accountability. I talked to dozen more than a dozen members after the meeting and they would not tell me which way they voted. Which is also showing you that not a lot of them we know that donald trump came after liz cheney pretty aggressively for her vote to impeach him but the members realize they dont have toy one way or another how they came down because their vote is not record and they have the freedom to whatever they want. At the end of the day. Liz cheney could maybe survive another leadership challenge but it could change dramatically in the next year, guys. And how much of that was because it was a Secret Ballot, right. Thanks, manu. Thanks, lauren. Lets discuss with former gop governor and congressman from South Carolina mark sanford. It is nice to have you. Thank you for joining us. My pleasure. You wrote a really interesting oped yesterday. Well get to that in a minute. But building off the conversation we just had with our colleagues, who represents the future of your party . Liz cheney or Marjorie Taylor greene . Well, that is the big contest in washington, d. C. And well see. My suspicion is that yesterday represented something of a waterloo moment with regard to trumpism within the caucus. I think the cheney vote was telling and though it was secret you still look at a twothirds on the side of cheney, onethird against. And given all of the hoopla that had been made by some of the Freedom Caucus members on cheney needing to go, the fact that she stayed and more importantly that the fact that mccarthy made the stand, i dont know how his brain is working these days. One minute hes on the trump side and then against the trump side and then for the trump side. Isnt that what politicians do . I hope not. Ideally there are some principles worth fighting for they have some duration more than five or ten minutes. But the fact that he made the statement that did he knowing that would be a publicly received message from donald trump, i think was telling. And so i think there is a little bit of hope in the water. Well see. All right. So your piece yesterday was super interesting. And you called on your party to recognize as a return to the things we once stood for but in the same breath you said we couldnt go back. And you called for a tone that is not tone deaf. A reembrace of reason and you called on people to reembrace science and reembrace math. Are they going to do all of these things . Is there political reward for doing that . There hasnt been over the last four years. I mean, i think there that has been sort of a strange fever existing within the Republican Party that i still dont completely understand. I understand its basis, its origin, which is going back to what you said a moment ago, what politicians do, one thing and then the other. And people got sick of it on the right. And what Republican Base has been told if you have just giving you the house well have deliverables for you. But if you just give us the senate well have deliverables for you. But then if you just give us the white house and they got sick of it. And so i understand the origin of the frustrations but the way in which trump harnessed it i think was extremely dangerous and created within the party and now based on Cheney Versus Greene Question before us today is do we go back to the origins of what made the parry great and a bast of conservative thought within the debate that is important or stay on this weird island that were on right now. I hope we quickly head back to the places that i think brought the party to prominence. So, you obviously disagreed with President Trump on a lot. And so you ran against him. And but now it is pretty clearly the party of trump. Hes holding a lot of the power still even from maralago if you look at the poll numbers. What do you think . Would you make another run for it if the Party Remains like that . Well, again, my run was never a real run. It was the buddies that brought it up, theyve already invested 25 years in your life. For sure. But for standing for something different, i guess. Right. But their point was what is another couple of months if you might and it is only might, be able to elevate the debt and Deficit Spending issue not a part of the National Debate on the republican side and i think that is tragic and i think it is wrong and a mistake. And so that was the attempt and it was a total waste of time. But i think that other people certainly need to run against the current trumpism element because i think it is leading us in a direction that is a problem for my four boys, i think in the political sense it leads us to some sort of desert that we are into the coming back if. You look at the peel off with suburban women or young millennials, there are some astoundingly bad things happening in political terms in addition to policy terms that suggest we ought to take a different path. Well they cant say they werent warned bia number of people and you. It is very good to have you, mark sanford and i encourage people to read your piece. It is good to hear those voices. Ahead well speak to bill cassidy who backed up Mitch Mcconnells decision to rebuke Marjorie Taylor greene. What he thinks about mccarthys decision to punt on this. The cdc director said that new data suggests that the Coronavirus Variant first identified in the u. K. Could be dea deadlier than first thought. The threat is pushing officials to speed up vaccination as the latest forecast now projects the virus could claim up to 534,000 american lives, more than half a million just by the end of the month. Our Health ReporterJacqueline Howard is with us this morning. Good morning to you. What are the headlines that you could share . Yeah, you know, one headline is looking into how deadly this variant that was first identified in the u. K. B117, how deadly it is. And this there is a back story to this. About two weeks ago the ux k. Officials put ow a report sugges suggesting there is emerging evidence to suggest this variant might have a higher death rate. When that happened the cdc got in contact with the u. K. To continue investigations into this specific variant. So this is being looked at directly. And here is what cdc director dr. Rochelle walensky had to say about this in particular. Have a listen. We know that some of the variants have increased transmissibility. There is increasing data that suggest that some of the variants, the b117 variant may increase lead to increased mortality. And the jury is still out with regard to how these vaccines are going to work with regard against these variants. So you see, jim and poppy, there are still many questions left to answer. Again, looking at the death rate and how deadly the variant might be, and again looking at vaccines. And how effective are vaccines against not just the b117 variant but against other variants as well. So this is something the that cdc is looking into closely. That is the headline i think were being left with here. And all of the data is coming in in realtime. The cdc director dr. Walensky also made this argument. She said that vaccinating teachers and school staff, though a good idea, not a prerequisite for schools to reopen safely. Tell us what theyre basing this on . Yeah, this has been somewhat of a debate. And it sounds like what theyre basing this on, there has been a new study that was just put out by the Rockefeller Foundation that shows how if certain measures are followed, Wearing Masks, physical distancing, and testing, Rapid Antigen Testing and then we could see a significant decline in covid19 in schools and that provides a certain level of protection which could help ease concern around getting vaccinations done more quickly. That is what i believe theyre basing this approach on. This study specifically found that if antigen testing is put in place weekly for all students and staff and teachers, there could be a 50 reduction in infections in high schools. 35 reduction in primary schools. Jim and poppy. That is good data. We know it works. And it is good to see that something does. Jacqueline, howard, thank you very much. Joining us now, dr. Mark lapel, director of the Duke Margolis center and former commissioner of the fda and sit on Johnson Johnson board of directors. Good to be with you. I would like to focus on the good news and i just want to get your sense of where things stand. I mean vaccinations do seem to be picking up. This is the key to ending this thing. Dr. Fauci said he wont be surprised if the j j vaccine gets Emergency Authorization soon. Biden administration is directing shipments to private pharmacies to get more people out there that could vaccinate us. Where do you see this going . Do you see the number of vaccination picking up and soon . Yeah, the ramp up is underway and we need to make more progress. As you said, were picking up the number of vaccines being administered daily up to an average of about 1. 3 million per day, more than 35 million americans have now been vaccinated including a lot have gotten the second shots. We do need to make it go faster, though, to stay ahead of those variant strains and to really help contain the pandemic. If you look ahead, the doses available, the pfizer and moderna vaccines are supposed to reach 100 million each by the end of march, plus if the j j vaccine does come online and as you mentioned im on the board, that is still in process and still needs a close review by the fda an that could happen soon and that could mean 300 million more doses available in the next quarter. Now if we were going to pick up the pace to use all of the vacs, it would be available by may or june, just about all adult americans could be vaccinated by the may june time frame but we need to get from 1. 3 million doses per day where we are now to over 2 million, maybe 2. 5 million. I think we could get there by keeping onramping up the approaching that were using. Mass vaccination locations and getting out in communities that are harder to reach, those could all help us get there. Doctor, you could explain why this u. K. Variant would be actually more deadly which is what the data show this morning, why would it be more deadly . I get why it might be more contagious, but why would it be more deadly . Yeah, poppy, i think it is the same kind of reasons that make it more contagious. It is able to stick on to the receptors that enable the virus to enter your respiratory cells more avidly and stronger stick probably means more ability to disthe cells, more ability to spread within the body more consequences for the health of people who are infected and it is just a reminder that the stuff that we know works, the distancing and the masks, the vaccination, we really need to double down on those to help prevent that kind of spread and the health consequences, too. Reopening schools is the top of so many peoples minds. Whether your a parent like poppy and i are, or just communities. Because there are vast cost to school closing. Do you agree with the cdc director, that you dont have to have every teacher vaccinated to do this safely, that other measures could bring this under control enough . Yeah, that is right. We need a combination of measures. The disruption has been tremendous. Most schools are still completely remote, virtual, especially in urban areas. Weve seen the impact so far has been by many estimates six to nine months educational impact on populations, especially lower income and minority population. That is a multitrillion dollars hit not to mention women being out of the work force because of having to take care of kids at home. We know we could reopen and it should be through a combination of methods, that testing approach is not perfect but it is one step along with distancing, along with good ventilation in schools, weve seen schools reopen successfully and that rockefeller report and im pleased to say i was part of the work has shown examples of how to do this. So it is not up none of these measures are perfect, but, remember, there is a risk of covid to kids out in the community and schools that do this well are getting the risks down and deliver better education. Perfect be the end of the good. Thank you for being here and work on the study. It does show a lot. Well have you back soon. Thank you. Quit cold turkey. Kidding me . instead, start small. With nicorette. Which can lead to something big. Start stopping with nicorette well despite no public support from republican lawmakers so far, the white house today is still pushing to get its Stimulus Plan to americans who desperately need relief. President biden seems to be holding on out that he will get some republican senators on board. Lets go to john harwood this morning outside of the white house. Mitt romney very clearly said youre not going to get any republican votes unless you change the plan. Is this an inaccurate read, that it sounds like they will try to make the stimulus more targeted but it doesnt seem like theyre going to come way down from the 1. 9 trillion number. Reporter well that is the point. Both of those things are true. They are going to make changes in the plan. And it is highly likely that the number comes down from 1. 9. If they target the 1,400 stimulus checks more narrowly to reduce the income level at which people will get a partial check, that could shave say 200 billion off the cost of the plan to 1. 9 becomes 1. 7. Mitt romney said no republicans will vote for 1. 9. It is not likely that democrats are either. But the key question is are the or the key fact is that it is not going to come way down, anywhere near the level that republicans like romney have proposed. If it goes from 1. 9 to 1. 7, will some republicans vote for it in the senate . Maybe. But the point is joe biden doesnt need the votes and hes not going to wait for them. It is setting up interesting politics because the republicans will see the position of voting against aid, free money, to americans, which politicians sometimes are loathe to do. John harwood at the white house, thanks very much. Well as americans wait for more covid relief, jobless numbers continue to grow. And more and more American Families have it is alarming in america. In 2021, more and more American Families are going hungry. That is right. Millions more now relying on food stamps, the government did Boost Spending for the program. There is concern even more will be needed. Vanessa youre cave itch joins us this morning. A lot of the jobs even when the economy recovers, many will never come back and those are families with kids. Exactly. And that is why the Department Of Agriculture which runs the food stamps or snap program is looking closely at it to see whether or not theyre providing enough money for families in need right now. We spoken to people over the last ten months and we know sometimes snap is simply not a enough and that is why youre seeing families on snap having to turn to food banks just to put food on the table. It was life offer death. We were either going to starve or we were lucky enough to qualify for snap benefits. Reporter it is that Black And White for veronica. Unemployed with children at home and the government food stamps is her life line. Many families are facing hunger for the first time. The number of americans on food stamps or snap has grown by more than 20 during the pandemic. And spending sky rocketed to 90 billion. Snap benefits came in perfectly to help me subsidize the meals that were going to increase because everybody was at home for every meal and every snack. Snap program is just that, designed to boost food budgets for families who live below the poverty line. Historic unemployment forced the government to increase benefits by 15 in december. It is supposed to be enough. But many experts and more fundamentally the families who use it are worried that it just isnt enough. So were actually taking a look at that now to see if adjustments are needed to make it so that families can afford a basic diet with our benefits. Reporter that is why these americans find themselves here in this single food line at the los angeles regional food bank. Those on snap say they need more food. Im homeless, so im staying with my sister. So, its hard to be able to go to market and shell go to market with me, but it is definitely not enough. Not enough. But you know i lost my job. I get like 200 bucks and i could make it stretch but once it is gone, it is gone. Reporter the l. A. Regional food bank serves 900,000 residents a month. Onetenth of the l. A. Population. In georgia, one in seven adults and one in five children are now foodin secure. In new York Public Health solutions said stap signups are up fivefold. This is a bit of a stopgap. It is better than nothing. It is great. But it is not helping people feel confident that they could put food on the table for their families every day. Reporter but she doesnt know when shell be back at work. A sign the recovery has a ways to go. President bidens proposed relief plan hopes to extend the snap benefits increase through september. I would like for the administration to remember that were real people and that were not, you know, Welfare Queens that are just taking advantage of the system. I am a real person who had a real job and now i need help so that i could provide for my children during this hard time. Reporter another program that the Department Of Agriculture is paying special attention to is the wick program, a Supplemental Program for women infants and children and women of color, single moms have been very hard hit. But both bidens economic Stimulus Plan as well as the proposal from republicans does allocate 3 billion to the wick program at a time when were expecting that need to continue to grow. Jim and poppy. This is when millions of americans aring hungry, that is a problem. I think that is important. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Coventry direct, redefining insurance. Well hours from now the full house will vote on whether to strip Marjorie Taylor greene of her Committee Assignments. Democrats are pushing for this after really just stunning comments that greene made before she was elected came to light. A series of things, endorsing killing Democratic Leaders and called Mass Shootings in which children died a hoax. She harassed some survivors of those shootings. She even denied that Terrorists Attack the pentagon. The vote follows House Republicans refusing to take their own action against greene. Here is what the minority leader in the house Kevin Mccarthy said about it last night. If you take for example Republican Party is a very big tent and everybody is invited in and we continue to grow and in two years well be the majority. Well joining me now is bill cassidy of louisiana. Thanks so much for taking the time this morning. Thank you, jim. So you said you agreed prior to that vote last night with mitch mcconnell, you agreed wholeheartedly that Marjorie Taylor greene, that her loony lies and Conspiracy Theories are a cancer for the Republican Party. Those are mcconnells words bua agree with him. Was it a mistake not to strip her of the Committee Assignments. I didnt follow that vote. I could say that miss green, when the house is canceling 11,000 jobs for Working Americans we need conservatives to give the other case. She discredited that movement. Were talking about lasers from outer space starting wildfires in california and putting an antisemitic twist on it. She discredits the Conservative Movement and as far as im concerned shes not in my tent. That is the point. Mccarthys argument that the big tent could handle these views, right. As you say, those are deeply offensive views to have inside of that tent, antisemitic, questioning 9 11, questioning and im sure you have too, ive met parents who lost children in the school shootings. For them to hear that kind of lie, or denying the election, can the republican big tent contain these views rightfully . Youre going to into kind of a philosophical question. I think what ive said is pretty clear. She gives conservatism is a bad name at a time when our country needs conservative view points more than ever. She discredits. And whether it is the false flag allegations of the Mass Shootings which is terrible, or some of the other things, as far as im concerned She Discredits us and should should not be considered part of it. And should she lose ore Committee Assignments then as a result . You know, that is a house issue so follow that house issue, im speaking about the Conservative Movement, i think ive been pretty firm. Okay, understood. Next week youll sit as a juror in the second Impeachment Trial of former trump. You said you would like the defense team to focus specifically on charges by democrats that his comments, his actions contributed to and incited that deadly attack on january 6th. I wonder, as youre sitting there, will you listen to the evidence and is your mind open . Of course. Youre very question kind of begs that i wouldnt be. Absolutely. Im a juror. Jurors are supposed to go in with an open mind. And everybody wants to push you to make a decision and if you dont, they read into that. As i was a year ago, express italy to listen to people say and judge based on the evidence presented. To your credit, i ask because you were one of the 45 republican senators who voted last week that well at least again, i want to ask what you voted for because rand pauls proposal was to say the whole trial is unconstitutional because the president is not in office. And rob portman who also voted for that measure said well it wasnt to say it is unconstitutional, but just open debate on it. What did you actually vote for . You laid it out correctly what rand did. But there was no debate before the vote. There was no analysis of the issue. We all walked in there, the vote had been called two hours beforehand saying, okay, we have a vote to take based on our current understanding about the justice aspect and the politics aspect because there are two elements to this trial, this is where i will vote now. But you really have to discuss it fully, that is not occurred in that setting. Understood. So but to be clear, youre saying when you sit down there as a juror next week, youre going to listen to the evidence and vote your conscience . Correct. Okay. Next topic. Covid relief. This is at the top of so many peoples minds. We saw nearly 800,000 people file for unemployment claim this is week. You were part of the ten republicans who sat down with the president to discuss whether there is any middle ground between you. As you know the president s proposal. 1. 9 trillion. You say that is too high. Youre closer to 600 billion. President biden is talking about narrowing the Stimulus Payments to a Smaller Group of people and incomes which might get it down to 1. 7 or below. Is that a figure you might be comfortable with . Is that close enough to something that you would vote for . It isnt how much money it is, it is what is the justification for how much money you spend. Now, i dont think it is right to take american taxpayer dollars and say were going to spend this much. And then fill it up to reach that amount. No, you say we need this much here and that much there and then we add them together to achieve whatever number is needed. Now in the area of education, which was kind of what i was focused on they are asking for 130 billion. They sent us justification. President bidens staff let President Biden down. The information that they sent was almost like you said, okay, we have to justify it, lets get on google and find out how we do. Because when you look at the links, the references, theyre from last year, before we knew there would be a Mass Immunization by the beginning of next school year. And in some cases the dollar amounts they chose are higher than the reference which they cite. And in one case 15 billion more is proposed relative to that which is to be needed. And i could go down other lists. So again we dont pick a number and fill it up and we establish a need and add it up. That is what weve done. Ive not seen that the president s team has done that. Refrping to its answers the white house gave to you after you left that meeting and let me ask you, is there still an open negotiations. Are you still talking to the other side. I hope so. Were sending back a letter today that addresses our concerns. I hope there is an inner play. There are reports that President Bidens staff does not want to but multiple was passed on President Trump which were bipartisan. And all of avenue sudden it cant be done bipartisan. With a president who sincerely i believe calls for unity and bipartisanship. I dont get that. That is just just doesnt make sense. Point of order, the tax cuts in 2017 were passed via reconciliation. That is not covid relief. Believe me. On covid relief, to your point, that is right. Those votes were bipartisan. Senator, we appreciate you having you on the program we hope to keep up the conversation and we wish you the best of luck. Thank you, jim. That was great interview and clearly hes read a lot of the details there. Okay, super bowl scare. Could a hair cut seriously keep some of the Kansas City Chiefs playing in the big game. Bleacher report is next. Say hello to way more quality finds youll love on wayfair. Way more brands you trust. And way more dependability. So with wayfair youll always find your perfect match. Well you cant make this stuff up. A covid scare for the Kansas City Chiefs. As the players barber finds out he tested positive while hes cutting players hair and this is days before the super bowl. Goodness. That is close contact. Andy scholes has this mornings bleacher report. We have a game on sunday morning. Yeah, we have a game still. But you could imagine if a number of these players were not available because they were trying to get a hair cut. That is a scenario here that nearly happened. According to multiple reports, a number of Kansas City Chiefs players were in line to get a hair cut and including patrick mahomes, when they found out that the barber tests positive for covid. The backup Center Kill Grove was in the chair when they found out. They were both Wearing Masks and kill gore posting this picture on twitter saying, hashtag, new prefile pick. Since kill gore was deemed in close contact, the barber did finish his hair cut. And he and Demarcus Robinson are opts Covid Reserve and they could play on sunday if they have five negative tests. There is nothing usual about this super bowl. Chiefs are practicing in kansas city all week long and not flying to tampa until saturday afternoon. That is just a little over 24 hours before kickoff. And in the meantime, the buccaneers are soaking up the Floor Sunshine and the first team in nfl history to play the super bowl in their home stadium and they knew when they got tom brady this was a real possibility. Since we signed tom in march, everybody kind of jokes around, bucs are going to have the super bowl at home and here we are. It is the First Time Ever happening in history. So it is its like mindboggling, actually. Im happy im in my own bed and eating good stuff at home and had extra type to prepare, dont have to travel or pack my clothes. And theyre allowing 25,000 fans into the super bowl. And as you could imagine, a lot of fans there in the city want to watch their team play in the super bowl. That combined with the limited capacity, the cheapest ticket right now for Super Bowl Lv is over 5,000. Yowza. Thank you for joining us today. Well see you tomorrow morning. Im poppy harlow.
