Actually lead to increased mortality. And the jury is still out how these vaccines are going to work against these variants. Reporter this is new day, with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. This is new day. Its thursday, february 4 tth, 6 00 here in new york. A moment of revelation for the Republican Party overnight. Days ago, it was mitt romney who said, our big tent is not large enough to accommodate conservatives and kooks. Days ago, it was Mitch Mcconnell who said, loony lies and Conspiracy Theories are a cancer for the Republican Party. But last night, it was Kevin Mccarthy, the House Republican leader who said, essentially, hold my beer. No action against Marjorie Taylor greene, the qanonsupporting House Republican who endorsed the execution of democratic leaders, harassed School Shooting victims, called Mass Shootings a hoax, reportedly trafficked in antisemitic propaganda about jewish space lasers. No action. She keeps her Committee Assignments. And received an ovation from half the Republican Caucus after speaking to them last night. Today, there will be a full vote in the house about her committee posts. Republicans will have to go on the record about where they stand on this. One other note, mccarthy made the claim overnight that he doesnt even know what the Conspiracy Group qanon is. He might want to check the tape from january 6th. Some of them were the folks who invaded his office. Meanwhile, the thirdmost powerful republican in the house, congresswoman liz cheney, reportedly got an earful from her gop colleagues, but she survived an attempt to remove her from leadership, because she dared to vote to impeach former President Trump for inciting that deadly insurrection. The final vote was 14561 and it was conducted in a Secret Ballot, meaning the republicans who stood behind her can remain anonymous. So we have a lot to cover. We begin with cnns lauren fox live for us on capitol hill. Whats the latest, lauren . Well, alisyn, last night, this hourslong meeting Behind Closed Doors of the republican conference, the first big test of what the future of the Republican Party is going to be after former President Donald Trump. And you had two members whose f fates were really up to their conference. Liz cheney and Marjorie Taylor greene. One who voted to impeach the former president , the other who holds extremist views. Reporter on capitol hill, a major test for republicans. Divided over whether to continue to be the party of former President Donald Trump or to leave him in the past. After an hourslong meeting with the house gop, Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy declining to pick a side. We just had a very good conference. Reporter House Republicans voting congresswoman liz cheney will keep her Leadership Position in a 14561 Secret Ballot vote, according to several people in the room. The thirdranking gop member under scrutiny by her colleagues, after voting to impeach trump a second time. A move cheney told cnn wednesday she does not regret. We really did have a terrific vote tonight. Terrific time this evening, laying out what were going to do going forward, as well as making clear that were not going to be divided. Reporter cheneys win, a victory for traditional republicans. And wednesdays meeting was also a major victory for one extremist member. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene. Dont mess with her reporter the Freshman Lawmaker from georgia facing backlash for her support of trumps lies about the election and for social media posts from before her election, promoting Conspiracy Theories and even calls for violence. Its a crime punishable by death, is what treason is. Nancy pelosi is guilty of treason. Reporter and despite Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell calling loony lies and Conspiracy Theories a cancer for the party, mccarthy dismissed his concerns, saying the georgia congresswoman privately denounced her extremist views. She said she was wrong. She has reached out in other ways and forms. Voters decided she could come and serve. Reporter the House Minority leader also ignoring calls by democrats to remove greene from her Committee Assignments. Calling their efforts a partisan power grab. House democrats are expected to attempt to do so in a house vote later today. I respect the fact that the people of georgia voted for her. But in congress, we have a responsibility to discipline our own members for their behavior. Reporter mccarthy arguing theres space for republicans like cheney and greene within their party. Its just an example, this Republican Party is a very big tent, everyones invited in. And you look at the last election, we continue to grow, and in two years, well be the majority. Reporter some House Democrats questioning mccarthys ability to lead the gop. In the past, weve been able to allow upon the parties to police their own, but apparently the Republican Party has changed. Reporter and of course, greene actually addressed her conference, her fellow republicans, in this closeddoor meeting. We are told that about half of the conference clapped for her after she spoke. She has yet to apologize, of course, publicly. Now, there will be that vote later today on the house floor, where lawmakers on both sides on the aisle, this is an easy vote for democrats, but a harder one for republicans, will decide whether or not she should lose her Committee Assignments, because democrats control the majority. We expect it will pass. John . Lauren fox, terrific reporting. Thank you so much. Keep us posted. Joining us now, cnn political analyst, Seung Min Kim, a White House Reporter for the washington post. Also with us, ryan lizza with politico, the coauthor of the political playbook. Ryan, whats the skinny . Give us some color on what went on Behind Closed Doors overnight. The skinny is that mccarthy decided on unity above all else. And that negative partisanship, you know, hatred of the other party, is a pretty powerful drug, right . Marjorie Taylor Greene was empowered by this process. She raised money off of it. She rallied the republican conference around her, as was shown by the Standing Ovation she got in there last night, by a number of members. She did not even face a vote within the conference to expel her. She did not publicly apologize. And mccarthy after the meeting did not demand that she publicly apologize for the previous comments. Well see today if on the house floor, she says something during this other vote. So, clear victory for Marjorie Taylor greene. And a clear victory for Kevin Mccarthy, whose number one goal is to win back the majority next year. And he decided that that whatever these comments were before she was elected as a member, it was better for him to keep his conference together, turn this into a democrats are the enemy issue, right . Thats how he kind of turned the dynamic around here. And move forward with cheney and greene, inside the tent, rather than either of them outside of the tent. See, seung minu, heres the problem. It wasnt just after she was elected. When she was given the chance as recently as 24 hours to clarify her public statement, to modify it somehow, she has loudly and proudly refused to. So 24 hours ago or 48 hours ago, she still believed all of those extreme things she said, the executions of leaders of the opposing party. All of that stuff, she refused to this was on radio shows. This was on her own social media. She stands by it. So Kevin Mccarthy can, i guess, ask the public to believe him over their own ears. But no one in the public has ever heard her say that she has a different viewpoint than the viewpoint that shes expressed in all of that violent rhetoric. I mean, i think thats a really critical point here. You heard Leader Mccarthy say in the clip that you just played earlier that she forcefully denounced the comments that she had made. That she disavows them, that she disavowed the Conspiracy Theories. But we as the public are not hearing that from her. I would be interested in hearing if she does sort of make those remarks later today. But youre right, she has stood by those comments, has not disavowed them at all. So we are kind of left hanging on Leader Mccarthys word that she has disavowed them. And i think it would be really critical for her to say that in public. But just with the larger point on mccarthy, i mean, he has talked he talked last night, which republican sources tell us that it was kind of his best remarks as a republican leader, about bringing the conference together, that you can have liz cheneys and you have Marjorie Taylor greens. But the problem is, there are many other people in the Republican Party, many senior officials in the Republican Party, believe that the Republican Party should not have amore jair taylor green in their ranks. That the gop disavowed those kinds of remarks. And thats why youve seen such a different, you know, tact from, you know, Kevin Mccarthy to Mitch Mcconnell, who, as we heard multiple times earlier this morning, has called her views a cancer on the party. But mccarthy is making a clear political calculation here. He wants to win back the majority. He wants to be speaker in the year 2023. And hes Making A Broadly political calculation then perhaps a moral one for the future of the Republican Party. Until she makes a public apology or a public clarification, this is basically the girlfriend in canada, right . We dont know it exists other than the word behind the scenes. And its more important than that, also. Because of the people who believe in these things. They need to be told its not true. Else, we see what can happen. We see the dangers and the threats on peoples lives that emerge from it. Today, there will be a vote in the full house. Full house will vote about whether to strip her of her Committee Assignments. And Marjorie Taylor greene in an interview says, basically, its the obiwan kanobie defense. Strike me down, and ill be more powerful than you can possibly imagine. She said, how stupid they are. They dont even realize theyre helping me. Im pretty amazed at how dumb they are. Ryan, thats a suggestion that democrats are overstepping the line here. But republicans are going to have to go on the record today. Arent they in a bind, as well . Well, yeah, were going to have another number at the end of today. We have the number 61. Thats the number of republicans who privately voted to take cheney down from leadership, right, in the Conference Meeting last night. So how many republicans . Whats that number going to be today to strip Marjorie Taylor greene of her Committee Assignments . Will it be above 61 . I doubt it. I think it will be a much more partisan vote. Youll have a lot of republicans saying, well, whatever you think of her, her former views, we dont want to set the precedent of the Majority Party telling the Minority Party what committees their members can sit on. And theres this other principle they will bring up of comments before you were elected should not be met with the kind of Death Penalty here. And you can probably quibble with both of those things, but those are the main arguments youre going to hear, and i doubt very much that youre going to get more republicans voting to strip Marjorie Taylor greene of her committees than you got last night, of them trying to kick cheney out of leadership. And that will be a very telling contrast, right . More people trying to get rid of cheney than get rid of Marjorie Taylor greene. Maybe im wrong about that. Maybe republicans will step forward and condemn her and vote to and vote with democrats. But it seems very unlikely. It seems much more unlikely that this will be a very partisan vote. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if there are any democrats who decide, no, we dont want to do this, because we dont want to set that precedent. Well, just to remind everybody, just one of the gems that she perpetuated. This is the violence against Hillary Clinton and president obama. There was a comment on social media that said, when do we get to hang them, Question Mark . Meaning h and o. Marjorie Taylor Greene responded, stage is being set, players are being put in place, we must be patient. This must be done perfectly or liberal judges would let them off. So in other words, you know, lets well figure out how to hang them, literally, but we have to do it carefully. And so when republicans try, sung min, well, look at what Maxine Waters once said. It wasnt executions. It wasnt physical violence. It may have been offensive comments, but it wasnt executions. A and so i thought it was interesting what jim mcgovern, democrat of massachusetts said it best, that a member of the house is calling for assassinations. Thats the new precedent. Thats the new line. So thats when the other party can try to remove you from your committees. Thats now the bar. Right, right. And the precedent issue is a really interesting one, too, as well. And youve seen just you know, for all democrats and perhaps for some republicans later today, those kind of offensive, really alarming remarks may be the final line or maybe just kind of the final draw. But it does seem like republicans are going to kind of lead on a more processed, procedural argument later today, saying we, you know, im sure a lot of republicans will Say Something along the lines of of we you know, i condemn her remarks, those are abhorrent, but we dont want to set a precedent Down The Line of removing members from committees for actions or things that they said before they were elected. We dont want to let the Majority Party dictate the Minority Partys Committee Assignments. And to me, thats not unlike a lot of the Process Arguments that Senate Republicans leaned on last week when it came to former President Trumps Impeachment Trial. You know, they may say, they disagree with the former president s behavior, what they said in his role in inciting that riot on january 6th, but they leaned on a Process Argument to kind of get themselves out of this hole. They said, we dont believe this trial is constitutional and that it shouldnt continue. That you cant go ahead with these proceedings for someone who is out of office. And it just, you know, its giving House Republicans and Senate Republicans kind of an out, rather than really confronting these issues within their own party and kind of the bigger issue writ large. So it will be really interesting to see vote counts later today, what republicans lean on just the substance of representative greene and what she represents to the Republican Party and who she represents, the politician versus again leaning on these Process Arguments and procedural arguments. There is no place for qanon in the Republican Party. I do not support it. So in august, he didnt support it. And last night he didnt know what it was anymore. Back with us, Seung Min Kim and ryan lizza. Ryan, this willful ignorance, if thats what you call it, head in the sand stuff, is strange. Usually after a group tries to kill you in a bloody insurrection, you, i dont know, you google it. You try to figure out who the murderous mob was. And the other dangerous thing about this is, its not going away. Its not going away. Marjorie Taylor Greene, as far as we know, hasnt denounced it. Shes never said that public. She isnt adherent. She isnt going away. So the idea that Kevin Mccarthy can come out and say, i dont even know if im pronouncing this right, ive never heard of this thing, what is that . Its absurd. He probably noticed the Mob Vandalizing and sacking the capitol on january 6th, that half of them had giant qs on their chest. And last night, he spent a couple of hours in a Conference Meeting where one of the big issues was one of his members conspiratorial views that were mostly about this Qanon Conspiracy. So the idea that Kevin Mccarthy didnt take a few minutes to google q and get up to speed on what that is and how its tearing his party apart and leading to violence in the capitol and calls to expel members is obviously ridiculous. But hes being tagged now by nancy pelosi as, you know, the qanon leader. I saw bill kristol on twitter going viral with calling Kevin Mccarthy kevin mcqarthy. So hes now being defined with this Qanon Conspiracy theory, partly because of his unwillingness to take stronger action against Marjorie Taylor greene. And hes denying that he knows anything about it. Seung min, one place where theyre not talking or trying not to talk about Marjorie Taylor greene, and its interesting, is the white house, which you cover. So whats going on there. What is joe bidens positions . Whats the white house angle on all of this . Well, it was really interesting. Youve seen press secretary jen psaki get asked about this. Not too much, but at least a couple of times. And the most recent time was yesterday in the briefing room, when i was there. She was asked whether President Biden had any view on whether Congresswoman Greene should lose her Committee Assignments. And jen had repeated something that she said before, that she is not going to talk about the congresswoman in that briefing room. And that is very strategic here. I mean, they have you know, they are singularly focused on trying to get their agenda through congress, and they are they have made a strategic decision not to evaluate her from that podium. And its similar to kind of how theyre going about with the Impeachment Trial of, you know, former President Trump, which begins next week. They have really deliberately tried not to engage too much on that issue, when asked by reporters at that podium. They talk about it only really in the context of how it affects their agenda. You know, and perhaps in terms of the Senate Schedule for covid relief and confirmations. And you do see President Biden and his team really trying to stay above the fray of what is going on in the Republican Party and particularly on capitol hill. Ryan, i think that when a lot of democrats, and i mean 80 million of them voted donald trump out of office, they thought that maybe he would go away. Or that they would be able to move on. But he is still playing a big role obviously in the Republican Party. How do you define it right now . Well, there was a brief window after january 6th where leaders like mcconnell stepped forward and tried to nudge the Republican Party in a certain direction, right . Came out criticizing trump in a much more forceful way than they had previously. Mcconnell talked or at least let it be known that he might be in favor of impeachment. Cheney spoke very strongly in the house floor when he voted for impeachment. And right after that, there was a backlash against that. With the Republican Base and the populist wing of the Republican Party, going after mcconnell, going after cheney, saying that, you know, impeachment was about punishing everyone who ever supported trump and that window to rid the party of trump has basically slammed shut in the weeks since then. And trump is, you know, as strong in the Republican Party as hes ever been. And that wing, as we saw with what happened last night in the house conference, is feeling emboldened right now. Yeah, ryan, seung min, thank you both very much for all of the reporting. So canada labeling the farright group the proud boys a terrorist group. Developing this morning, the house of representatives passed a Budget Resolution that does allow democrats to advance President Bidens 1. 9 trillion relief bill without republican support. Cnns Jeremy Diamond live at the white house. This is just one element. There was actually a ton of news overnight in terms of what the president is pushing for on the relief bill getting support from joe manchin, offering in some ways, floating the notion of changing the plan a little bit. A lot going on here, jeremy. A lot going on, but one thing is very clear. With both houses of congress now having passed that Budget Resolution, it is very clear that this white house and senate and House Democrats intend to move forward with this 1. 9 trillion Coronavirus Relief package. They may make some changes around the edges, make some trims to satisfy some republican members who may perhaps consider voting for this, but they are moving forward with the Broad Strokes of what President Biden proposed. And President Biden made that very clear on a call with House Democrats just yesterday, saying that hes not going to start his administration by breaking one of his key promises. We cant walk away from additional 1,400 in direct checks we proposed, because people need it. Frankly, theyve been promised it. Maybe i think we can better target the number. Im okay with that. But were going to start im not going to start my administration by breaking a promise to the american people. I dont think the problem is that were going to go too big to deal with this crisis. The problem is were going to go to small. And that is a refrain that we have heard repeatedly from white house officials, that the danger here is going too small, not going too big. And that has been the pushback from the white house to Senate Republicans, who have been asking for this 600 billion package. Just a third of the size of what biden proposed. Biden also said yesterday on that call with House Democrats that a package of that smaller size is simply not in the cards. And so where does this leave us . Again, biden willing to negotiate still with republicans, but again, its just going to be some trims around the edges. Today, though, biden will still talk unity, addressing the National Prayer breakfast in a prerecorded video message, im told. And later in the day, well hear from the president on Foreign Policy. Something that we havent heard him address too much so far in his first couple of weeks in office. But were told that the president is expected to go to the state Department Today and he will talk about restoring americas place in the world. We wont get any specifics on his Foreign Policy doctrine, but he will broadly address the theme of his presidency, which will be shoring up american alliances and restoring americas place as a leader in the world. Thank you, jeremy, for previewing all of that for us. So this morning, the Justice Department, charging two prominent members of the farright extremist Group Proud Boys with new Conspiracy Charges related to the deadly insurrection at the u. S. Capitol. Cnns Josh Campbell is live in washington with the details. What do we need to know, josh . Good morning, alisyn. The fbis investigation into that january 6th attack on the capitol continues to uncover apparent evidence of preplanning. The Justice Department announcing these charges against two prominent affiliates of this proud boys movement, two men Named Nicholas Ox and nicholas decarlo. Authorities alleged that they planned and fundraise for an effort to Block Congress on january 6th. Theyre also charged with storming past police here in d. C. And entering the capitol. This Conspiracy Charge is just the latest indication of how serious the Justice Department is viewing that Insurrectionist Attack and how they are leveling federal charges in order to try to identify those who preplanned. Were also learning that the Government Of Canada has announced that it will designate the proud boys and several other extremist groups, that according to our colleague paula newton in ottawa. This designation means that authorities will be able to go after the Funding Sources of some of these groups as well as make it a crime to engage in training. Now, theres no terrorism domestic Terrorism Law here in the United States. However, we did learn that the Biden Administration has ordered a review by Law Enforcement and intelligence agencies to study this domestic terrorism threat. Our colleague, ana cabrera, sat down with alejandro miorkas, who provided his view on this threat. Take a listen. To see the insurrection, to see the Horrific Acts Of January 6th were not only personally devastating, but a commitment created in me a commitment to redouble our efforts to fight hate and to fight one of the greatest threats that we face currently on our homeland. Which is the threat of domestic terrorism. The threat of domestic terrorism proceeded that terrible day and it persists to this day. Reporter now, we know that this threat is not just something that government has to grapple with. Indeed, american citizens need to know about this threat. I would urge our viewers to go to cnn. Com, read about what canada is doing, learn about these groups, read about some of the great work from our colleague sara sidner whos digging into some of the violent motivation behind some of these groups. This is a threat that will endure. Josh, thank you very much for all of that. Now to coronavirus. Dr. Anthony fauci warning that the u. S. Developing overnight, the death toll from coronavirus in the United States surpassed 450,000. Dr. Anthony fauci now warning that the u. S. Is not vaccinating people fast enough to stay ahead of the highly contagious variants. As of this morning, 8. 3 of americans have received the first dose of vaccine, just shy of 2 are fully vaccinated. Joining us now, cnn medical analyst, dr. Jonathan miner, a professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington university. Doctor, thank you so much for being with us. Look, dr. Fauci says were not doing it fast enough. And then there is this poll published by actually, monmouth published it overnight, about peoples views of getting vaccinated. And i want to put this up on the screen. 50 of people sayt theyll get vaccinated as soon as allowed. But the number right below it, likely never, 24 . And then 19 , wait and see. The idea that 24 arent willing to get vaccinated ever, how much of a problem is that . Its a giant problem when you think about, our goal really is to vaccinate 70 to 80 of the public to achieve herd immunity. If you take 25 off the top immediately, that means every other person in this country has to be vaccinated. We have a lot of pr work to do. And i havent seen a Massive Public Education Campaign talking about the safety and necessity of vaccines. Where is it . Again, we havent been, you know, surprised that these vaccines are here. Weve been waiting for them. Why havent we been talking about this . Were only giving about 60 of the vaccine that is being delivered to the states. We need to give much more now. I totally agree with dr. Fauci, that were not vaccinating enough people, but we have the vaccine to do more. I had a conversation with a Vaccine Scientist who works for the government last week who told me not to worry about the timing of the second dose. The key metric is how many patients how many people are we vaccinating with the first dose. How many new people are we getting immunity, and right now, thats not enough. Were averaging around 900,000 a day. Were giving about 1. 4 million shots a day, but an increasing number of those every day are second shots. We need to be maximizing the number of first vaccinations. Yes, but dr. Reiner, correct me if im wrong, its not that were pumping the brakes on giving out the vaccine, its that we dont have the infrastructure and the manpower. States are doing, i think, the best they can. But i dont know how they could i mean, at least what weve been told, its hard for them to accelerate it, beyond what theyre doing right now. We need to harness the scale of the military and the national guard. They have the ability along with fema, of, you know, erecting temporary, largescale vaccination centers. Either using, you know, Military Mobile Units or using existing facilities, like arenas and stadiums, drivethroughs, through parking lots. They have the man and womanpower to do this. And the infrastructure to do this. We need to marshal those forces now. We need very largescale events. And although i welcome the arrival of vaccines in retail outlets like cvs and walgreens, you know, when i think about our local cvs, im thinking of, you know, not this massive throughput. Now, again, they have, 10,000 stores, but still, we need largescale events, drivethrough events, where thousands of people in cities, in each city, are vaccinated every day in these centers. Dr. Reiner, quickly, the cdc director Rochelle Walensky overnight suggested that teachers dont necessarily need to be vaccinated to have schools open. Listen. I also want to be clear that there is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen. And that that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated in order to reopen safely. Whats your view . My mother was a first grade teacher in new york for 30 years. Ive been thinking about this a lot. And as much as i agree with dr. Walensky in almost everything she says, i dont agree with her on this. The only way to get schools open now is to vaccinate every teacher in the United States. Look, weve classified them as essential workers, but we dont treat them as essential workers. Why would you tell teachers that they need to go back into small, sometimes very poorly ventilated classrooms, sometimes with 20 to 30 kids, and just suggest to them that youll probably be okay. You know, about a third of the teachers in the United States are over the age of 350. We should be bringing every teacher into school now, vaccinating them all over the course of a week, in their own school, and then after their second dose, three to four weeks from now, every school in the United States can open. Thats how to do it. I hear you. Thats obviously the ideal. We only have a few seconds left. But doesnt the data show that schools are not super spreaders and that it is actually a low risk for teachers, even if theyre not vaccinated . You know, the data may show that, but teachers have to feel safe. The teachers unions, you know, the Aft In Particular is a very strong union, and teachers feel vulnerable. And it doesnt matter how much the data suggests that they can be made safe. They dont feel safe. We have the ability to vaccinate them. So lets just vaccinate them. Audiobooks, podcasts, audible originals. All in one place. This morning, a team of experts from the World Health Organization is in wuhan, china, investigating the origin of coronavirus, including looking into a laboratory at the center of all of this. Cnns david culver spoke with one of the investigators about what theyre finding. Reporter a caravan of vehicles pulling into the Wuhan Institute of virology. Onboard, International Experts representing the World Health Organization. Their mission, to find the origin of covid19. What were trying to do right now at this stage is keep an open mind about every possibility. Reporter cnn connected with zoologist peter dashhat. Speaking to us from his hotel room in wuhan, he had just visited the virology institutes highly secured and highly controversial lab. It is from here that former u. S. President donald trump and his secretary of state mike pompeo have alleged, without any evidence, the virus originated. I think they made a horrible mistake and they didnt want to admit it. Reporter china has rejected the claim. It was good to see the lab. And you know, you confirmed your suspicions that its an incredibly wellbuilt, welldesigned, wellmanaged lab. Reporter members of the Scientific Community have said that daszak has a Conflict Of Interest due to his ties to their leading scientist. This video, shot in 2014, shows the pair inside the Institute Examining Coronavirus Samples collected from bats. Theyve jointly published several Scientific Research papers. She speaks very openly and quite directly and often goes counter to the sort of political trend. She is known as bat woman in china. Shes reached celebrity status. Since the Sars Outbreak in 2003, she has focused her research on bats and the various coronaviruses they carry. But after covid19 was first detected in wuhan, less than ten miles from where her lab is located, speculation surfaced that the virus leaked from her facility. Ive seen evidence that this likely came from the Wuhan Institute of virology. Reporter the Trump Administration provided no evidence to support those claims. Do you think its possible this virus was engineered within that lab and leaked . Theres no evidence of that at all. But it is something that we talked about with people at the wuhan lab and got really honest and frank and good, informative answers to. Because they, themselves, brought this up. The conspiracies around lab leaks, that they feel strongly have no grounds. Reporter swarmed by media throughout their site visits, the w. H. O field team also inspected the hospitals where the early covid19 patients were treated, along with the nowinfamous seafood market. This place had a lot of attention over the past 12 months paid to it. There was a lot of concern that perhaps the virus was still festering in spots, so the chinese authorities essentially wiped it clean. Daszak and other experts agree that it is most likely the virus originated from wildlife. But without ruling it out, he stopped short of concluding it started in the market or even in wuhan. Cnn obtained these images from december 19. They show a variety of caged creatures inside the now shuttered seafood market. Were still looking at the evidence. Were looking at what was in the market, what types of animals are they . The types that could carry coronaviruses . Reporter chinas state media has also suggested without evidence that the virus might have been imported into the city on frozen foods, a claim leading Health Experts have dismissed has completely groundless. But it is an Origin Theory Daszak is not ruling out. The teams field study expected to continue into next week. One thing that we cannot overlook is the timing of this field visit, alisyn. Its 12 months after the city of wuhan went on lockdown. More than a year after that market was shut down. So youre talking about evidence that as we saw firsthand was wiped clean. And of course, a very much delayed trip in looking into this firsthand. I asked the scientists about that. He seems to think that theyre still going to get good data, that theyll find the information that could ultimately lead to the origin. The other thing i asked is about the access. How much are they really allowed to see freely . Weve been on Government Trips where its, look at this, dont look that way. He claims theyre actually getting a lot of transparency. That they have a lot of structure to the trip, because they cant run rogue. But they feel as though the questions they ask are being answered candidly. I should point out, thats one expert. Theres more than a dozen others that are part of this trip. So could be different opinions and experiences here. David, that was so interesting. Obviously, we need to get an answer as to how it originated and it is good to know that they are looking into it, albeit, belatedly. So thank you very much for all of that reporting. I mean, john, can you imagine if a bunch of players ended up not being able to play in the super bowl on sunday because of a haircut . Well, this nearly happened.
