That question is actually more difficult than you might think. They embraced the ones about the election. Not to mention, of course, the many deranged Conspiracy Theories pushed by President Trump about ted cruzs dead, muslims and much, much more. Marjorie Taylor Greene is not the only Republican Office holder who has been pushing but the only one republicans are contemplating admonishing. Senator thune, i regret to inform you when it comes to embracing Conspiracy Theories and dangerous lies in general, House Republicans have already made their decision. Ryan nobles is on capitol hill. Lets start with congresswoman liz cheney. What are you learning about how this meeting might go . Might she have enough support to hold on to her Leadership Position . Reporter right now that is an open question. It is very difficult to find a republican in the House Of Representatives who is willing to predict the outcome of what is expected to be a very tense meeting behind closed doors. On one hand, you have the republican the segment of the Republican Party thats ready to move past President Trump. Certainly those 10 republicans that voted to impeach him a month ago, and even a Broader Group of republicans that were more along the moderate spectrum who believe it is time for the party to take the next step beyond trump. As you rightly point out there is still a significant number of republicans that still very much embrace President Trump and his supporters and, as a result, are angry over liz cheneys vote to impeach. Not just that she voted to impeach but the language she used to defend the fact that she was going to vote to impeach and the fact that she did it from her perch as the third ranking republican in the House Of Representatives. Now, cheney has made an effort here. We know she has gone around and quietly spoke to a number of republican members to try to beef up her support leading into this crucial meeting. What we dont know for sure yet, jake, is if there will even be a vote on her future. Its leaning in that direction. It looks possible that House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy will put it in the hands of his Conference Members to decide cheneys fate. At this point it is an open question as to what her future holds. It appears republicans, ryan, will not strip Congresswoman Greene of her committee assignments, which has happened in the past for democrats and republicans when theyve violated basic societal norms. So, ultimately, democrats are going to vote on the matter. That certainly seems to be the way its shaping up. House Minority LeaderKevin Mccarthy has worked feverishly the past 24 hours to try to come up with some sort of compromise, perhaps removing greene from only one committee, putting her on a different committee. Part of that calculation would be greene coming forward and offering some level of contrition for these past statements shes made. At this point, were hearing shes offering no effort of coming forth with any sort of apology. Even if she did, jake, the sense were getting from democrats is that it would be too little, too late. The Democratic House caucus chair Hakeem Jeffries says he believes its time to take action because republicans refuse to do so t seems democrats are heading down this train, to vote to remove her from these committees regardless of what republicans say after this remove her from the committees on his own. Even if he doesnt, it is very clear that democrats are going to move forward with or without him. All right, ryan, appreciate it. Joining us now, former republican congressman from virginia, daniel rigleman. What do you make of the fact that House Republicans could very well vote to keep marjorie Taylor Greene where she is, on her committees, no punishment, no word against her deranged Conspiracy Theory adherence while firing liz cheney from hers . What might that say about the house Republican Party . I think it shows where the polling is at. I hate to be this politically realistic but when youre looking across a lot of these districts its different in the senate, right, jake, than the house. They might be looking at polling, the base, or the committees, how theyre voting right now and say listen, the way we can win this is staying on the stop the steal integrity messaging. You know how vile i think that is. Again, i think thats where they might be going. I would hope im wrong in this analysis, jake. Ive been right about a lot of the qan. N stuff and the votes. But i hope im wrong here. If liz has sort of a very concerted effort to oust here and marjorie Taylor Greene say only loses one committee but keeps another committee, i think it will show where the Republican Party is right now and i think youll see a coalescing of some of these districts where they think they can win. I think they think thats the way to win in 22. Youll see a huge part of the moderate swath of the Republican Party begin to exit. I heard republicans say what about ilhan omar, democrat from minnesota, she said some antisemitic things, which she did, but she apologized. She said i unequivocally apologize and said she was sorry. A source tells cnn mccarthy asked greene if she would apologize and she refused. One republican member told cnn, quote, if she doesnt apologize for the crazy things and says she doesnt really believe them, then how do we not remove her she does really believe them, how do we not remove her . So she has no remorse, no contrition, is your party now the qanon party . What scares me is i feel shes acting as the new q avatar. You nailed it. Shes channeling what people want to see in certain portions of the Republican Party. What scares me is its going to morph. Im working with the Network Institute and that scamdemic is starting to morph into new hash tags like covid 1984. New world order. New world order, apologize for that, jake. Now youre starting to see these new hash tags coming out at Dodger Stadium when they blocked that for vaccinations there. Were seeing these heat map blooms that were working on right now. What scares me, when you have people spouting ridiculous like marjorie Taylor Greene and theres no accountability for that, youll see other Conspiracy Theories and con tanlg contagions. Youre right, we need to make the decision now. You dont want crazy on crazy here. Thats what were going to get if we continue down this road. What im seeing right now, i dont think marjorie Taylor Greene believes theres any consequences to what shes saying online at this point. Minority Leader Mccarthy tried to get her to apologize. Leader mccarthy and whip scalise, they were pushing the big election lie, out there acting as if donald trump actually won and it was all being stolen, which was complete crap, as you know and have said many, many times. Is that not the lesson here, the moment you start doing any big lie, you just open up the tent to every crazy Conspiracy Theory . You know, i said that before, jake. We had this discussion that you didnt want the big tent to become the carnival tent. Yep. Thats what we have right now. Again, every Conspiracy Theory is now on the table. If that plays to fundraising, your base, why use it if youre politically naked in your ambitions . I warned about this. We talked about this. I remember getting patted on the shoulder after i spoke on the floor about qanon. You remember how long that was. Yep. I remember a member telling me i was neurotic and paranoid. Do you know why i was paranoid . I was a former Intelligence Officer and read too much into the tea leaves. Jake, were seeing this again. Were seeing these blooms in the antivax community as violent and directed as the qanon blooms and were proving that with data. You see people like marjorie Taylor Greene and what shes doing or any of these individuals that are pushing this, you have lost the moral high ground to make an argument about Conspiracy Theories or what we should do in congress. You are seeding that ground to other individuals who do not buy into the lies of stop the steal, plandemic, scamdemic, where we go one we go all, and now youre seeing covid 1984, New World Order reset. And i dont understand how people dont see this. And i feel like im banging my head against the wall here, jake. Today will be a huge day for marjorie Taylor Greene and liz cheney but really its a bigger day for the Republican Party. I think people see it. I see it. Your former colleague out of kinzinger sees it. A lot of House Republicans either dont see it or arent willing to take a stand because theyre afraid of losing their election, as you pointed out in your first answer. Denver riggleman, republican of virginia, thank you very much. We appreciate it. Thanks, jake. Well continue to monitor this House Republican meeting happening now. Turning now to our health lead, a potentially stunning discovery about one covid19 vaccine, Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, not yet authorized for use in the United States. Not yet anyway. As cnns nick watt reports, a new study shows this vaccine might help prevent people from spreading the virus and not just preventing them from getting sick. Reporter these shots reduce your risk of illness, but do covid19 vaccines also reduce the risk you could still harbor the virus and spread it to others . Early data suggests the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine does just that, reduces the risk of transmission. Which is a stunning discovery if thats true. Reporter Britains Health secretary called the findings absolutely superb, this vaccine not yet authorized in the u. S. I havent seen the data yet. Thats not yet been peer reviewed. I have every reason to believe the brits. Reporter more than 100,000 dead in america so far in 2021. The big fear now, those more contagious variants. Plan on the assumption that there are a lot more cases of these variants than we know about. Reporter why . Because only these six states have genetically sequenced more than 1 of their cases, and thats how you find variants. Meanwhile, is this Country Vaccinating fast enough to keep ahead of the variants brspread . Were not because the situation is that we still have a demand that far exceeds the supply. Reporter vaccination and Mitigation Efforts should focus on the 20 to 49 age groups say researchers, who found younger adults are the biggest spreaders of the virus. And it shall. Based on Contact Tracing of recent variant cases, not Wearing Masks and participating in inperson social gatherings have contributed to the variant spread. Reporter planning a big indoor Super Bowl Party this weekend . Maybe dont. As difficult as that is, at least this time around, just lay low and cool it. Reporter now a quick word on schools. Cdc director just made it absolutely clear. Vaccinating all teachers is not a prerequisite before opening schools safely. Thats what they want to do here in los angeles, vaccinate all the teachers before kids get back into classrooms. The governor of the state says sure, we will prioritize teachers but we agree with the cdc. Jake . Ive been saying this for months. Its now a question of teachers unions versus medical professionals, health professionals. Reporter yeah. Nick, thanks so much. Joining us live is dr. Reiner, professor. Good news out of oxford. Astrazeneca vaccine may affect whether or not people get sick but whether or not they transmit the virus. What does this mean . How is this different from the other vaccines . Im not sure its different from the other vaccines. Weve had animal data now from the novavax vaccine, which well hear about more in Clinical Trials in the next one to two months that showed after inoculating those animals and intentionally exposing those animals to the virus, you could not find the virus in those animals, it would not transmit them. This is what most vaccines do. I expect well see that with the rna vaccines when we see data from moderna and pfizer as we go forward and from Johnson Johnson as well. What this means is that not only do the vaccines prevent you from becoming severely ill, and they do that exquisitely well and prevent you from dying, but they also prevent the spread of the disease. Thats how you put a Pandemic Down, and you prevent the spread. The vaccines that have been approved we just dont know if they prevent transmission. We know they prevent sickness. You say you believe they also do but we isnt seen the data yet showing, for instance, the Pfizer Vaccine limits the spread . Exactly. The biggest spreaders of coronavirus in the u. S. A new study shows were adults 20 to 49. That age range, according to the study, was responsible for 75 of transmission even though that age group is just 40 of the population. Note that children and teens and adults over age 65 were the least likely to spread the illness. What lessons can we learn from this . Well, because the latter groups are the groups that have been most at home. The little kids and older folks have mostly been sequestered. Its that age group between 20 and 45 who have been out and about. And these are the people who have spread the virus. Look, i thought for a while now that the priority groups just arent working and that we have to open it up to everyone. Ultimately, everyone has to be vaccinated. If you end up vaccinating older people, youll save their lives because theyre at higher risk. If you vaccinate younger people, youll save lives also, because theyre spreading the virus. Now we have data that proves that. We should be broadly opening the vaccinating centers to everybody. We can set aside, perhaps, a larger percentage of the vaccines for Older Americans, but i think we need to start getting the vaccine out into younger people for exactly this reason. Younger people are the people spreading the virus. That age group most likely to spread covid, you think our Mitigation Efforts should at least make it equal so theyre also in line for a vaccination . One thing i want to note, nick watt just reported on the question of Reopening Schools and what the cdc director, Rochelle Walensky said about this. Take a listen. There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated in order to reopen safely. Obviously, schools need to take Mitigation Efforts. They need to be able to have ppe, improved ventilation. They need to be cleaning more often and testing, if possible. But there you have the cdc director saying you dont have to have all the teachers vaccinated, as many teachers unions are demanding, before reopening the school safely. Why arent schools reopening in so many cities . Yeah, because it doesnt matter what the cdc director says. Look, i know and respect dr. Walensky immensely. My mother was a first grade teacher in the new York City Public School systems for three decades and was a proud member of the aft. I can tell you it doesnt matter what scientists say. It matters what the teachers feel. If they dont feel safe theyre not coming back in the classrooms. A lot of teachers are in atrisk groups. We should not just prioritize them but systematically vaccinate them. You want kids back in the school, vaccinate all the teachers now. Every single teacher gets vaccinated, you can open up schools. Thats the way to do it. Dr. Reiner, thank you. Appreciate it. Flying an airplane is not just like riding a bike. Pilots out of practice during the pandemic, and theyre making some critical errors. While the latest safety data shows flying is the safest its ever been, publicly available incident reports submitted by u. S. Flight crews. Pilots self reported being rusty in at least 26 separate cases since the start of the pandemic. Its a serious issue. Reporter the former Managing Director of the National Transportation safety board. Senate democrats as he urged the party to stick together including 1400 checks it still has no republican support but President Biden reiterated any plan would be bipartisan even though it seems increasingly clear that it can be as big as biden wants it to be or it can be bipartisan but likely cannot be both. Welcome all home. Reporter joe bidens Lobbying Blitz on his 1. 9 Trillion Krfb relief package. Hop hopeful on gop support. But today, laser focused on democrats, underscoring the political dynamics at play. The president and senators were also in agreement in the need to go big and xheet the challenges we face with a need to get the job done. Reporter he walked through his plan in detail to House Democrats by phone where he stressed the need for the 1,400 direct payments. I think we can better target the number. Im okay with that. Im not going to start my administration by breaking a promise to the american people. Reporter a push coming as Congressional Democrats are clear that days after this we have just had a very productive, cordial twohour meeting with the president. Reporter they are prepared to move forward without gop help. Theres agreement, universal agreement, we must go big and bold. We cannot doddle. We cannot delay, we cannot dilute. Reporter Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell pointing to bidens meeting with republicans. Spending two hours meeting with President Biden, Senate Democrats plowed ahead with a Party Line Vote to set the table with a partisan jam. Reporter making clear his family will play no role in his administration. No one in our family, extended family will be involved in any government undertaking or foreign policy. The white house has not commented directly on that ad, it has made clear they dont support any efforts to leverage bidens name. The president is committed to ensuring we have the most ethically, vigorous administration in history. Jake, an Administration Official i was speaking with said the president remains serious about reaching some kind of bipartisan agreement, his team circulating answers to several questions that senators had earlier this week, trying to address those questions. But the reality remains this. With democrats on capitol hill moving forward, making clear they are unanimous in their support to move forward as the Administration Official told me, jake, the clock is ticking. Phil mattingly at the white house, thank you so much. Joining us now to discuss, kierstin gillibrand. Are Senate Democrats negotiating with republicans at all . We have been negotiating for the past several months and weve been having a real challenge of responding to the need. People are hungry. Children are going to bed hungry. Se seniors dont have enough food. Seniors are dying of isolation. The reality of whats happening in my state is horrible. And so we need a generous and robust and bold package. We need something that actually adds to food stamps and to pandemic ebt, that adds to job training. Thats what republicans are unwilling to do. They are willing to do money for vaccines, everyone is. Theyre not willing to go the extra step to meet the need of the suffering. President biden said in the oval office he thinks some republicans ultimately will support the plan. I assume hes talking about the 1. 9 trillion plan. As of now, do you know of any republicans on capitol hill who are open to voting for it . So, typically, weve gotten support for these kinds of investments from a handful of republicans, people like Susan Collins and lisa murkowski, but i dont know, because until they see the bill and can assess whats best for their state, i dont think they know. But i know that i need a bill that has money for paid leave, that has money for food stamps, has money for job training so we can have more Health Workers to give the vaccines. Cnn obtained audio from President Bidens comments from this morning where he warned that the Democratic Party will succeed or fail together. Take a listen to this excerpt. There have been three democratic president s in 28 years. Each one faced a tough midterm loss that cost a lot. It happened in 94 and in 2010. We dont want to let that happen here. So, lets stick together. Do you have any concern the democrats might vote against this bill . For instance, joe manchin from West Virginia or Kirsten Sinema from arizona . I dont. I think the bill represents the shared values of the entire country at this point. The people are desperate for relief. People have to get resources so they can provide for their kids. In my state i know that when i visit the food banks and the homeless shelters, the Domestic Violence shelters, the needs have gone up exponentially. Resources arent there to help them right now. We have to do more. Its time for a bold response. Its not time for half measures. President biden said its critical to pass the 1,400 stimulus checks in addition to the 600 that passed last month or december rather, because he didnt want to start his presidency by breaking a promise he made to the american people. Republicans say President Biden also promised to be bipartisan and also to try to usher in a spirit of unity in washington. And they say that if this bill is not bipartisan, then hes breaking that promise. So, we would like all of our bills to be bipartisan. In fact, almost every bill ive ever authored is bipartisan and has just been waiting to get a vote on. If we cannot deliver this emergency robust response on a bipartisan basis it doesnt mean we cant deliver the rest of our legislation over the next several years on a bipartisan basis. So im optimistic that this call for unity is still very much there, but again we just cant sacrifice whats happening right now in our states and not deliver the relief people are asking for and that people actually voted for. If you look at the georgia election, it was about the 2,000 checks. And if the republicans dont want to help, do all the things that people need, these members of congress, this is what they ran on. They ran on helping people and meeting the people where their need is. All right. Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand of new york, thanks for your time. Appreciate it. House republicans meeting to address the partys civil war. New details on that. The price one republican congressman is already paying back home for voting his conscience. Were getting Breaking News now out of that House Republican meeting. Congresswoman liz cheney arrived to the meeting as the party considering whether she should be removed from her Leadership Position because she voted to impeach trump for the insurrection. The committee is also considering consequences for congresswoman marjorie Taylor Greene for her spreading of Conspiracy Theories. Leader mccarthy just released a statement. What did he have to say . Reporter thats right, Kevin Mccarthy, House Minority leader issuing a statement a few minutes ago where he essentially says that the republican conference is going to do nothing to hold representative marjorie Taylor Greene accountable for the statements she made before she became a member of congress. This, of course, after democrats put intense pressure on mccarthy and republicans to remove her from the two committees she currently sits on the House Education Committee and the house budget committee. Mccarthy did meet with Greene Last Night in an attempt to try to get her to offer an apology of some kind. He has then gone back to steny hoyer, the Democratic House majority leader, to try to offer up some sort of a compromise that would allow greene to at least sit on some sort of a Committee Without taking the dramatic step of members of Congress Voting to remove her from those committees, particularly members of congress from an opposite party. Now, in this statement, mccarthy says that he offered that compromise to hoye controversy and that hoyer turned them down. He then goes on to criticize democrats, suggesting that their members should also be held accountable for some of their past statements. But the long story short, jake, mccarthy taking no action on greene. On the other controversy thats happening right now, that of liz cheney, the third ranking republican, we are told in that closeddoor meeting thats happening right now where jeff zeleny reporting, that she actually spoke to everyone in that conference. She did not apologize for casting her Impeachment Vote but did ask that they continue to keep her in that position. Well have to see how that all plays out. We have resolution on the republican side from one of those controversies, jake, still learning to find out what happens in the second. Appreciate it. Senate majority leader Chuck Shoomer said officer sicknick was a peacekeeper caught in the wrong place when peace was shattered. President biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid their respects last night. May officer sicknicks memory be a blessing and shame on all of those who told the big lie that incited the mob that led to his death.
