Parkland School Shooting. Oh, and shes also said that democrats should be executed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is very concerned about the ongoing threats to members of congress and she says now the enemy is coming from within the house of representatives. There are new developments this morning in the effectiveness of vaccines against new coronavirus strains. Earlier results from Drugmaker Novavax show it is 89 effective against the regular strain, but only 60 effective against the variant that we are seeing in south africa. That is worrying health officials. Whats more, people in the trial who had been previously infected with the first strain are getting infected again with the new strain. So this really has the potential to change some of the framing in the battle in this pandemic. The first cases of that strain were now found in the united states. That happened for the first time yesterday. It happened in individuals who had not traveled and have no connection to each other. This means there is already Community Spread of that variant. First, we start with our top story. Jake auchincloss, the first member of congress to call for Marjorie Taylor greene to resign or be expelled. We also have former congressman denver riggleman, a chief strategist for the Network Contagion strategist network. Congressman auchincloss, you were the first to really sound the alarm about Marjorie Taylor greene. You believe she should be expelled. Isnt the argument against that that thats for the voters to decide . Theyre the ones who put her there. If you dont understand that calling for violence against your political opponents is unacceptable in democracy, then you should not be representing one. Marjorie Taylor Greene fails that test, but i should not have been the first person to call for her expulsion. Leader mccarthy should have be beat, me to the punch instead of traveling to palm springs to kiss Donald Trumps ring. Marjorie Taylor Greene says that the enemy is within. Look, youre a marine, do you fear for your safety. Do you think that Marjorie Taylor greene wants to do you harm . I dont fear for my safety. And i think its important that we turn the temperature down in the House Chambers so we can have vigorous debate, as were meant to do. The truth remains, though, that Marjorie Taylor greene has called for the executions of president obama, nancy pelosi, hillary clinton, and she wants to bring a gun tonight house floor. It shouldnt be Speaker Pelosi who calls this out. The Republican Party should be taking carry of extremism within their own ranks. They should have the decency to be embarrassed and take action on it, as opposed to continuing to buy into this cult of trump. Congressman riggleman, they had their chance. They had their chance and they continue to have their chance to try to stop people like Marjorie Taylor greene from leading, from talking, from being able to chase a Parkland School shooting survivor down the street, heckling him. According to her opponent, so she was in this runoff race, as you know, in georgia, 14th district in august. Her opponent said that there is a pound of Oppo Research on her. Its not just the stuff that we can see publicly on her social media post that shes now s scrubbed, theres a mound of it. And so much so that liz cheney and Steve Scalise back then went to Kevin Mccarthy and said, we have a problem on our hands. They knew she was going to be a problem. And somebody who is this fundamentally poisonous, who would heckle a teenage School Shooting victim, thats not going away. But Kevin Mccarthy hasnt done anything as far as we can tell. You know, her opponent was a neurosurgeon, also. So i want to put that out there about john. And we have talked about this and i find it amazing. And what scarcees me, hes exacy right, it should have been the republican conference that jumped up and said this is completely unacceptable. My guess is she wont be expelled, but what really concerns me, she had an audience for those videos. We talk about the Oppo Research, people wanted to watch this. She thought people would be interested in the things that she was saying. When you think about space lasers are starting forest fires, you have an issue. And you have to start wondering. People keep calling her a firebrand. I dont know if firebrand is a synonym for unstable, but thats the issue that we have. We have videos that shes put out there that we can define as unstable. I think thats our concern and thats why nancy pelosi was pretty surly in the press conference when people who donate want to bring guns on the floor are so outlandish and ridiculous, basic Conspiracy Theories that were used, we have Marjorie Taylor greene putting out this type of tripe, we have people watching this. And thats the issue with disinformation. And its not just space lasers, congressman riggleman. Its jewish space lasers. She blames the rothchilds for building the jush ewish space lasers. Its the oldest, laziest antisemitic trope out there. It is. But the point is, its not a mystery. None of this is a mystery. She is who she has always been. Its the the problem the the people electing her. The problem is the people allowing her to spread this. Am i wrong . John and alisyn, she was seated on a committee. Education education how can she doing anything with children . Nothing. Thats the thing that gets me. I look at steve king, and what shes done is so much worse. You talk about the rothchild. Its also the baseline for qanon theory for harvesting babies. Same exact thing. Jewish blood label. And thats what were looking at. People knew they were getting. They knew the package this was wrapped in and theyre still seated on committees. I dont think shes going to be ex expelled. I commend the congressman for Going Forward and trying to do this. Its a noble thing to do, but its not going to happen with a twothirds vote in the house. And thats what we have right now. And i think thats what bothers me about disinformation. What bothers me is how many people have bought into this nonsense. Congressman, can democrats do anything without the support of republicans . Democrats want to work in a bipartisan fashion, both to governor and to remove the worst elements from congress. But the gop has ownership of this. And the gop knew what it was getting well before Marjorie Taylor greene, when it embraced donald trump in 2016. And that is really when a ticking time bomb began. And many gop leaders, including representative riggleman, who voted against the impeachment of donald trump, own this issue and they all need to take ownership of removing this faction of White Spreupremism and extremis. Go ahead, congressman. You know, i wasnt there to vote for impeachment or not impeachment and i would have voted for impeachment, as everybody knows. You know, based on my background and talking about qanon, as you know, for months. And that was the issue that i had, was that there has to be some braver there. You saw ten people that showed incredible bravery, especially with liz cheney, what shes going through right now. All of these individuals stood up and said, we have to get rid of this scourge of disinformation and there is culpability when you see a siege on the capitol on january 6th. And when you have Marjorie Taylor greene still spouting this nonsense, there has to come a time for accountability. And sadly, from what im seeing on the ground out here, john and alisyn. Im not seeing that accountability thats actually going to jump up and bite anybody. Theyre going to make gains in 2022 based on stop the steal messaging. Congressman auchincloss, theres another development which has to do with security around the capitol, which is the Capitol Police are now suggesting putting a fence and keeping the fence up around the u. S. Capitol. How do you feel about fencing in the u. S. Capitol . We shouldnt turn the home of our democracy into a fortress. Redont want the capitol to become a green zone that is unwelcoming and indeed even hostile to constituents and journalists. This should be open, safely opened to the public and representatives should govern with transparency and accountability. Im deeply concerned about a permanent Security Posture around the capitol that can keep people away. They deserve taxpayers and voters deserve to be able to ask k questions and access the capitol. I want to pick up what you were saying about liz cheyney, because Kevin Mccarthy had warned his members to cut the crap. And matt gaetz went to wyoming and held a significant rally against liz cheney. There were hundreds of people there for his rally against liz cheney. Do you think that she is going to survive this . Well, she did get almost 70 of the vote. But i think its going to be a fight. And if you have people like matt gaetz going down there and doing those type of things where hes rallying up the crowd like there, i think thats a real issue. And i was shaking my head while i was watching this. You probably were, too. We were in wyoming and you have this individual who looks like hes dressed as an extra from dead poets society, screaming about liz cheney in wyoming. And liz has done incredible things for that state. And watching this, donald trump jr. Called into that rally. And Kevin Mccarthy was with donald trump while this rally was happening. I dont know how honest kevin was being about those not speaking out against other members, when it looked like some kind of coordinated action in wyoming, with the dump about some kind of ridiculous survey that most of the voters were against liz. 500 people from a trumpspecific pac that were doing polling there. All of this sounds like an oppo dump that was rehearsed and coordinated, and all of this was done just to get at liz cheney for her vote for impeachment. So its pretty easy to see this when youve been intelligence. Matt gaetz has never seen a camera he didnt like, so never a surprise he would be doing that. Let me ask you a question about relief that millions of americans are talking about. You just talked about bipartisanship in a different setting. The White House Press secretary, jen psaki, was asked by our Kaitlan Collins yesterday, would President Biden sign a relief bill that didnt have republican votes . As you sit here today, do you think that he should commit to signing or not signing a bill that isnt bipartisan . I think thats a question for President Biden. But i can tell you from my seat, i think a Relief Package that has bipartisan support is going to be a better, stronger Relief Package. But were not going to wait on it. Because americans and Small Businesses and local governments are struggling right now and we h need to get something fast. And were now in a race between vaccines and variants. And we need the money to produce a Vaccine Supply fast enough and to get it into arms fast enough that we can outpace the variant. This is becoming a Matter Of Life And Death as well as a matter of livelihoods. And we just cant wait on the gop to come around to what is so clearly necessary. And were going to talk about that in one second. Gentlemen, thank you very much. Really great to get your perspectives. Thanks for having me. Call now and get your free infokit this morning, new growing concern about the effectiveness of vaccines against the highly contagious strains of coronavirus, especially the variant first seen in south africa. So preliminary results from novavax show that its vaccine is 89 effective, which is good news against the regular strain, but only 60 effective against the strain seen in south africa. The u. S. Reported its first case of that strain, two cases, in south carolina. They involve adults who did not travel to south africa, which means that there is Community Spread of that already here in the united states. Joining us now is dr. Peter hotez, the codirector of the center for Vaccine Development at texas Childrens Hospital and the dean of the National School of tropical medicine at Baylor College of medicine. Doctor, im glad youre here, because its that gap in effectiveness between these vaccines between the strain weve seen and the strains were seeing in south africa. Its that gap that i know is of concern, and also the fact that people in that study who had already been infected with the first strain, getting infected again with this new variant. How does this reframe how you are thinking about the pandemic this morning . Yeah, no, it is pretty concerning, because what were seeing is reductions in the effectiveness of all of the vaccines tested so far against the South African Variant. So in some cases, its just looking at virusneutralizing antibodies, to the moderna or Pfizer Vaccine. Theres a significant reduction and same now with the novavax vaccine, where we actually have clinical data. I mean, look, theyre still partially protective, so i think well still see a potential benefit from these vaccines against the South African Variant, but were already anticipating and when i say we , were already looking at producing a second vaccine particularly against this new South African Variant, that would likely be used as a boost later on. So i think the message right now is to the American People especially, is, look, nothing changes in the immediate future. Were going to use all of our existing vaccines. Theyre still highly effective, but later on in the year or mab in 2022, we might have to look at a boost using a modified version of the vaccine thats specific for the South African Variant. We are just hearing from cdc director Rochelle Walensky about that 60 rate on the South African Variant, so lets listen to what she just said. Expected a vaccine as efficacious as the moderna and Pfizer Vaccine at 95 efficacy, and i would say even a vaccine that has 50, 60 efficacy would still be a really strong tool in our toolbox to fight this pandemic. Furthermore, i know that these Mrna Vaccines have the capacity to use and to engineer the mrna so it would be more potent against these strains. And that work is actually already ongoing. So it may just lend us to feel like we need a Booster Effect further down the road. So all of that science is ongoing in anticipation. That sounds familiar. I believe you just said Something Like that. But practically speaking, dr. Hotez, how does it work . I would take that 60 right now. And i think that so Many Americans would. So then when the booster is available, we would go back for the booster next year or whenever you have it ready . Yeah, thats probably some scenario like that. But look, heres where we have to heres how we have to proceed, i think. If we can vaccinate the American People, fully vaccinated, 240 Million People in terms of three quarters of the u. S. Population to slow or halt Virus Transmission, which is our estimate of whats required. If we can do that over the next five to six months, we have the possibility of completely getting ahead of this variant and really halting Virus Transmission in this country. Were not going to do it just with the Mrna Vaccines alone. We wont have enough of those vaccines in terms of robust production. So maximum the use of the two Mrna Vaccines. If we can, if we can get the astrazeneca vaccine up, the oxford vaccine up, the j j vaccine, if we can get that novavax vaccine into production, we have a vaccine that nobody in the federal government has talked to us about bringing into the u. S. , if we can bring all of those vaccines to bear, we can have a pretty big impact on halting Virus Transmission. And i think thats what the emphasis needs to be right now is bringing a lot those other vaccines as soon as possible. If, right, if . And thats a goal, but thats a goal thats not days and weeks away, thats a goal largely months away. And theres a question about what do we do in the meantime, particularly if this variant first seen in in the u. S. Is here. What measures do you think need to be considered now to make sure that the South African Variant doesnt take off . Well, you know first of all, i do think we can maximize vaccination. I think were you know, generally, the tone that im hearing is not from you, but in general is a bit defeatist saying, theres nothing we can do. We wont be able to vaccinate the American People until the fall. And i say, we have to make this a bigger priority and halt Virus Transmission. And we can do it if we kind of do a little bit of adjusting in terms of how were thinking about this epidemic. Look, if we get to 600,000 death, chitwhich is what some oe projections are by may, if were a country, 600,000 deaths. And people are still calling duane reid and riteaid or cvs and begging for a vaccine for their mother or father or brother or sister, thats a major hit. And in the meantime, we dont know how many variants are here and how widespread the South African Variant is, because were so underperforming in genomic sequencing. We still havent fixed that. Were only doing 50, 60, maybe 100,000 virus genome sequencing. Were not harnessing the full energy of all of our research agencies. We should have those robotic sequencers at the University Of Washington and Washington University of st. Louis. Those things should be running day and night, 24 hours a day, getting up to 10 million virus genome sequences, so we know what the heck were dealing with. Is the Biden Administration considering that and working on that . I dont know. I would assume yes, but i dont have any inside information about that. I dont know how were going to avoid getting to that 600,000 dead number. Were still moving at this incredibly fast, deadly clip. So hospitalizations have come down a little bit. The Positivity Rate at the moment has come down a little bit, but not the death rate. So i dont see how were going to dodge that horrible bullet. Well, remember, in terms of that decline in numbers, we have gone from about 250,000 new confirmed cases a day to about 150,000. So a 40 increase. Thats the eye of the storm from my statement, as these new variants start to take over. Now is the time where we have to rev up our vaccination rate. Were still only about 7, 8, 9 of the American People. Thats just not enough. We have to move faster. Dr. Peter hotez, thank you very much for helping you understand this. There is a lot to go through this morning. We really appreciate it. Thank you so much. All right, the stunning comments from a republican member of congress, Marjorie Taylor greene. This morning, Congressional Republican leaders under fire for their tepid response to outlandish rhetoric from congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene. This is just a small snapshot of the things she said. She once wrote in a blog post that the total lie of this pizzagate Conspiracy Theory claiming that the clintons and democrats were offering a pedophilia ring out of a d. C. Pizzeria, she wrote it was real. Shes promoted the Fringe Qanon Conspiracy that casts the former president as some fighter against a sinister network of deep State Government and hollywood elites. Listen to this. We are talking about who is q, so ill tell you what he says. According to him, many in our government are actively worshiping satan. In a nowdeleted Facebook Post, greene questioned whether californias Deadly Campfire in 2018 was started by lasers beamed down from outer space. Lasers, she says, somehow connected to the rothchilds, the jewish european banking family, a targetoldest, lazyiest, most dangerous antisemitic tropes on the book, jewish space lasers. Since it was deleted, cnn has not been able to independently verify that post. Here is what she said on camera about the nations Deadliest Mass Shooting In Las Vegas in 2017. How do you get avid gun owners and people that support the Second Amendment to give up their guns . Maybe you accomplish that by performing a mass shooting into a crowd. You make them scared. You make them victims, and you change their mindset. So she greed with commenters in a nowdeleted Facebook Post who said that the 2017 Parkland School shooting was a socalled false flag planned event. And just this week, video surfaced of her confronting and harassing parkland shooting survivor, daniel hogg. And she said shes not ready to stand down on pushing these ridiculous claims of fraud in the 2020 election. We had done a lot of work in our preparation, talked to a lot of people, looked at a lot of evidence that i think still needs to be looked at. And should be presented in court. I truly believe that. So joining us now is greg bluestein. He has reportered on congresswoman greene since she first announced her run for office. Some people who are only seeing this for the first time, jewish space lasers, Satan Worshiping stuff are like, oeh, my god but this has been known by and large from the beginning. This is who she is. The story isnt the crazy things that Marjorie Taylor greene has said, because shes always said them, the story is the acceptance of it, from institutions at this point. The acceptance and the silence. Youre exactly right. Her beliefs in these deranged Conspiracy Theories, these violent threats might be news to some republicans in washington, but theyre well documented by the Atlanta Journal constitution, by politico, by cnn, by other outlets long before last years election and most Republican Leaders chose to stay silent or even support her rather than risk alienating President Trump ahead of a close election. So where did she come from . Who is she and how was she accepted early on . Well, shes not from that district in Northwest Georgia. Shes from a wealthy family from the suburbs of atlanta. She first announced a race for a district that is now represented by lucy mcbath. But when tom graves, the incumbent congressman from the district of Northwest Georgia announced her retirement, she moved up to the city of rome, georgia, in Northwest Georgia and ran for a very crowded primary seat and emerged in a runoff against a local neurosurgeon, frankly because republican establishment couldnt get behind any candidate and they chose to stay out of it and gave her an open pathway to the seat. Do you have a sense that these Dangerous Things that she has said, that theyve held her back in any way . They got her some bad local coverage, some negative local coverage, but she used it to galvanize her supporters. She said, look what the fake media is doing. Look what the liberal democrats are trying to push against me. Shes cast herself as a freedom fighter, as someone who spoke out against, these, what she says these dangerous conspiracies. So she used it to energize republicans in Northwest Georgia. Also, she came in with a big money advantage, because she was so wealthy. So she was able to kind of emerge as that frontrunner early on because she had the money to get radio ads and yard signs and other things that candidates couldnt afford. How far away did the other two in that senate race run away from her . Not at all, honestly. At the time, there was basically a primary in the Special Election between doug collins and senator Kelly Loeffler and both of them pushing for that republican spot in the january runoff both courted her very, very aggressively. Because they knew, they fought, at least, that whoever won her district in november would end up in the runoff. She ended up endorsing Senator Loeffler at an event that i was at that ended in disarray after just a few questions. So both of those Republican Senate candidates really, really aggressively wanted her support. And now it seems that the silence has moved to washington. How serious has the push backback been on her from Republican Leadership . House republican leader Kevin Mccarthy says he wants to have a conversation with her. So not very serious so far. Meanwhile, Democrats In Georgia and washington are raising those concerns that shes on the House Education Committee and yet shes mocked the deaths of schoolchildren in mass shootings. Right . So they are pointing that out, that how could this be happening right now . And back here in georgia, you know, there is many stories written over the summer saying that she was promising to be a nightmare for democrats. Well, she could end up being a nightmare for republicans and thats exactly whats happening. But theyre not running away. What does it tell you that the most we have right now from Kevin Mccarthy saying, hes going to talk to her. That, really, as a naughty kid, sometimes, that would really scare me. I was going to get talked to by somebody. Thats going to really keep me from doing something. Exactly. Well, what it tells you is the lingering effect, the last exact of President Trump in georgia. Because he called her a rising star right after she won the runoff. Republicans here told me privately that they cant afford to risk alienating those deep well of Trump Supporters who supported him and who supported her rhetoric by speaking out against her. A few day. Former congresswoman karen handel did, a republican, from suburban atlanta. And other, you know, some republican pundits in georgia did, but most of them didnt, because they didnt want to fear enraging President Trump. And that hold on the Republican Party in georgia and in washington still exists, it looks like. Again, i ask you this. Have you seen any evidence that shes winning or in office in spite of it or because of it . I think its because of it. And i say that just because she emerged as the frontrunner in the primary, because of her invective. Because of her outspoken stances. And even when these Facebook Posts, when her racist, xenophobeick, antisemitic remarks came out again and again in published reports all over social media, it didnt seem to dissuade her supporters one bit. And again, that is what i think should be of most concern, as we sit here this morning. Its not a bug, its a feature. Its not that Marjorie Taylor greene is an aberration. Its that maybe, maybe shes not and its telling us something much more than that. Greg bleustein, you have been working on this from the beginning. You have been telling people, telling the world if theyre willing to listen about this from the beginning. We thank you for your reporting and thank you for being with us this morning. Thank you. All right, a blistering report accusing new yorks governor of Undercounting Coronavirus deaths and Nursing Homes by a lot. We have new reaction to this, next. Developing this morning, new yorks Attorney General is accusing the States Health department of Undercounting Coronavirus deaths at Nursing Homes, by the thousands. The state Health Commissioner disputes this report. Alexandra field joins us now with more. What have we learned . Were talking about a huge disparity between the number of deaths of residents in Nursing Homes related to covid that were reported by the States Department of health and the number being reported by Nursing Homes themselves. This revelation based on an investigation by the states Attorney Generals office, which surveyed 62 Nursing Homes, thats just a fraction of the Nursing Homes statewide. But soon after the report landed, the department of Health Updated its number of deaths of nursing home residents by more than 3,800 people, releasing new data that shows that those residents died from covid or covidrelated causes in hospitals. But the Department Of Healths commissioner, the state Health Commissioner, dr. Howard zucker, is pushing back against this report, saying that undercounted or miscounted is the wrong word. He explains it this way. Saying that the Department Of Health has always publicly reported the number of a fatalities within hospitals irrespective of the residents of the patient sand separately reported the number of fatalities within nursing home facilities and has been clear about the nature of that reporting. So well see if that distinction makes any difference for the families of nursing home residents, who have been asking questions about the care of their loved ones for nearly a year now. What this report definitely does is it intensifies scrutiny that started back in march, surrounding a state policy that allowed hospitalized patients to return to Nursing Homes. Some six weeks later, the state changed the policy, requiring Negative Covid tests for those patients, before they could return to Nursing Homes. But alisyn, in those intervening six weeks, more than 6,000 patients went back into Nursing Homes. The governor has defended the policy by saying it was in line with federal guidelines. Alex, thank you very much. Obviously, this is not going away. So bring us any new developments. Certainly. Even the people who are never hospitalized with coronavirus can have a very rough road ahead, even the people who originally think they have a mild case of it. Some of them battle symptoms for months. Rebecca meier was a healthy 31yearold until she Got Covid In March Of Last year. She joins us now to describe what has happened in her life ever since. Becca, thanks so much for being here. Great to see you. You have been battling this for basically the better part of 11 months. And so originally, you thought you, i assume, you were just going to have one of the bad boy scouts bouts of it and then what happened . Yeah, thank you for having me. I got sick in march. I thought i would have a run of the flu. And then i just got never. And i went all summer in and out of the hospital and just havent been better. Youve been in and out of the hospital. And as i understand it, doctors have tried a lot of different meds on you, such as antibodies, steroids, the dexamethasone, which is the strong steroid, inhalers, antinausea meds. Did anything work . Ive tried many things. My bedroom has looked like a pharmacy at many times. Ive had some mild successes with some meds and in general, not anything has really worked longterm. Were still very much in the Symptom Management Phase of my sickness, 10, 11 months in. And just to reiterate, you were a healthy 31yearold woman with no underlying conditions. And so now tell us what your daily life is like. I was healthy prior to march. Now i dont get out of bed most days. I dont remember a day prior to march where i wasnt nauseous or throwing up at some point throughout the day. My kids dont have access to their mom like they used to, because i just im just not up to it. Were looking at pictures of you before and then after, and how debilitated youve become. How many times have you been hospitalized . I think im up to seven times now. Ive lost track at this point, but usually i stay two to three weeks. So thats also lost time with my children. And during that course, they try to run every test they can and they hit a wall at some point. And theyre like, do you want to be miserable in the hospital or in my bed . And i would much rather be in my bed . And what do doctors say about why they cant crack the code on why you havent gotten better . Not a whole lot. Theres a lot of, i dont know yet, its comforting knowing im not alone in this fight, that theres thousands of others also stru struggling. But its disheartening that doctors dont know yet whats wrong with us and weve been sick for so long and there really is no end in sight. So what has this done to your emotional state . Its it hasnt been good for me, thats for sure. Like i said, i dont get out of bed most of the time. I have a feeding tube now, because i have postcovid gastroporisis, i have thyroid issues. Emotionally, im not well. I dont have a lot of hope. I try to be optimistic, but after months and months of in and out of the hospital and doctors with no Real Solutions yet, its frustrating. Of course, it is. I mean, thats the worst, being sick and not knowing when it will end. Not knowing, is this my life . Forever. I mean, thats the the people who i know who are chronically sick, that is just a daily crucible, emotionally. And thats exactly what it is. And i really have to take it hour by hour, because right now, i feel okay. An hour ago, i was so nauseous and feverish, it was hard to move. So its just its a constant struggle. You talked about the fact that youre not able to be there for your kids. And i know that obviously this has taken a huge toll on your other relationships, like with your boyfriend.
