The journals, there were writings on them, had nazi symbols, writings about adolf hitler, according to investigators, there were internet searching they say they found in his home as recent as the 27th or 28th, rather which was the night before this attack took place. These are all the ramblings of someone with a mental illness, there was no antisemitism behind this attack. Investigators other than what was in this complaint havent pointed to what the motive was behind this attack or how this suspect came about this house on saturday night. Here about 30 minutes from his own home. So were still trying to learn details about all of that, but certainly a lot of information coming out in that criminal complaint, including more details even about the attack. Investigators say that thomas walked into the house, he had his face covered and he pulled out a machete, and started attacking people saying no one is leaving. The leaks say new york has a growing problem the new york incidents following the tree of life shooting. Can you point to a specific cause or is it too hard to quantify . Its clear we have an antisemitism problem in the country. Its clear that we are attacking the problem piecemeal, and thats whats so difficult for me to understand as a security analyst. Antisemitism is not a new phenomenon, ask any jew about their familys history. And they can name far too many instances of antisemitism. They were forced to ask a tough question, which is, should i downplay my faith, because im worried about my security. Were seeing that scenario unfold right now as jews of all ages are being forced to answer whether they should hide their y yamakas or stars of david. We are not bringing the full resources of the u. I would like to think a place of worship is a place you could go and not have to worry about this kind of thing. According to fbi statistics is not just against jews, its against muslims and against christians, but hardening these facilities is not going to address the problem. It is important that we protect people in their places of worship. We need defense against attacks. We needed indication about tolerance. And religious freedoms. And we need a Public Private partnership to focus on deterrence, defense and fostering understanding. There is no Silver Bullet in this case, and i applaud efforts of the Law Enforcement community. But that alone is not going to do it. We need to stoppic nooring it. Its interesting, because these incidences are very well publicized. Right. And my biggest fear is, that they become normalized. We were getting ready to start communion, and this gentleman came in and sat the row behind us, it seemed weird, i got up one time and said something to tony as he was passes the first tray of communion and is whispered something in his ear and sat back down. I noticed him getting back up when we were doing the second part of our communion. Thats when he pulled out his shotgun and all i heard was one shot go off and i hit the floor. His identity was confirmed by a federal Law Enforcement official as well as his sister. She said keith and another one of their siblings, a younger brother had been living on the street for a long time. She said the sibling took his life in 2009 and yesterday was that siblings birthday. Was that related to the shooting . Unclear. Thats a piece of information she shared with us. She last spoke to keith in november and does not believe this shooting was political. This information does mirror a little bit of what weve heard from the fbi. They described him as a franz current individual, whos had numerous run ins with the law, a criminal history. We heard from the attorney general here in texas, take a listen to how he described keith thomas. At that time, he was not named. He had been here several times. They were open to helping people that were transient, homeless or need help. They welcomed those people into their church. And they welcomednt their church. My understanding is more of a loner, and probably going to be difficult to determine exactly what his motivations were, other than mental illness. Reporter it appears he had gone to this church on at least one occasion. Reporter well the study looking at manufacturing counties across the country but primarily distributed in the midwest and the south and so that is a regional demographic to keep in mind. When they looked at this link between plat closured and opioid deaths they saw the ling stronger among white men of working age. So that is about 18 to age 65. So that is interesting as well. But overall, ryan, weve known about this link between the economy and your health and when it comes to opioid Overdose Deaths in particular, theyre part of a group of deaths that researchers call deaths of despair. They also include alcoholrelated deaths and suicides. And we know that deaths of despair have a link with economic burden. And so this study just adds to our understanding of that link and specifically deaths of despair as well. So how does this fit in the epidemic across the country. Reporter the overall epidemic is a large and complex problem and this study is just one small piece of that larger puzzle. What we do know in general in the United States is that about 130 people die every day related to opioid overdose so that is important to keep in mind. In recent years we have seen a decline in the deaths and decline in opioid prescriptions but overall this is a very large and complex problem and we still have much to learn and this study is helping us to learn and better understand that problem as well.
