Performance is a nothing burger. Its up 1. 5 . I dont expect anything to happen at the Shareholders Meeting today to see a catalyst for that. Whats wrong with this stock . I think what we need is in june at the wwdc to hear about the ai innovation, and you had a little bit of a glimpse into it yesterday, and why is it so particularly relevant . In the last six months the perception of the marketplace is that apple is not innovating quickly enough in that direction and certainly has not laid out what the strategy and the plan is for ai. If you think back to 2014, okay, go back to 2014, in may of 2014, we began to hear the rumors that apple was finally going to deliver something similar to the android in terms of the size of the iphone increasing. So what did we get . In september you had the announcement where you had the iphone 6 plus, 5. 5 inches. That was the most successful iphone ever to sell, and i will tell you this at wwdc in june, if apple is able to confidently communicate to its Investor Base how were going to incorporate ai into the iphone 16, the iphone 16 will sell beyond the iphone 6 plus, and it will be the most significant innovation apple has introduced, and it will absolutely restart the momentum in the stock. Youre telling kari who also owns the stock, a stock thats been dead money for the last six months is going to be dead money until the summer . In june, thats the earliest that youre going to be able to get that information from apple if theyre going to be able to deliver on incorporating ai into the iphone 16. June isnt that long from here, buti would say i guess if you waited six months, why not wait nine . Well, for now its three. But basically weve had a year for apple. It was a very good stock last year. Its the largest cap, were underweight the name. It was the largest cap. Now its not. Microsoft is. And that speaks to what were talking about. Who ever thought that would happen . I did. I did. You thought that microsoft was going to get a larger market cap than apple . I think a lot of people did. Used to have a larger market cap and then it lost it. Butthings change. And with the change, the ai train, and apple has not been as much on that caboose line as other companies in that top tier. What were seeing right now, clearly, is the four that are, which is nvidia, microsoft, amazon, and meta have moved the market. So far this year they represent 50 of the gain in the s p. We have a chart to show that, and you see the concentration of the s p is these names and, of course, nvidia is now 30 of the s p gains, have really driven it. Apple does that mean it wont be . It might be. They have to prove that they can do something thats innovative. Right now its a 30 multiple stock with high single digit earning growth. We used to say, jenny, that this dispels one thing. We used to say, as apple goes, so goes the market. We are proving ourselves now that not only can the market go up, the nasdaq can approach an alltimehigh without participation from what was once the largest stock in the market. That was debated. That was questioned. That was doubted for a good period of time. Right. Its because leadership changes. Apple has been flat for three years. It was funny, ive been on the show about five and a half years. The first two years it was all tesla. Then it was all apple. And then apple has been fading in favor of, like, all nvidia. The point of that, weve seen leadership change, and weve seen it change quite dramatically even over the last five years. Kari was saying just now their Earnings Growth is expected to be at 7 00. Scott, when you say whats wrong with this stock, i think its an easy answer. Whats wrong with the stock is over the past three years the kagr has been 2 cagr of growth has been 5 . I dont think it needs to be them saying, oh, were going to put ai in the next iphone and we expect sales to be whatever the numbers are. The sales will come. I dont think youre right. Thats the thing. We talk about sales of course theyre going to be strong because they have such a strong base, install base, is the word i was thinking of. To jennys point at 27 times, good is not good enough. The sales have to be historic, and i believe they could be. Analysts expect 7 growth for the year ahead. Thats driven by share buyback. Right . Even right now, theres just nothing in there thats compelling. So i dont even know, joe, how they would get its a little bit over the top from somebody who doesnt own the stock. Well, theres a reason i dont own the stock. But thats insinuating that, well, by not owning it for the past five years, youve done just great. Well, i would say ive done just great. Weve owned meta. Weve owned united over the past three years, apple has done nothing. Im exaggerating. A little bit. 2021, apple was trading at 180. Youre talking about apple stock as if its a big dog in the market for years. Its a nothing hamburger. I think were just missing the potential no, for two and a half years its done nothing. Youre looking in the past. I agree im looking forward, too. Share buybacks, eh. Cant you do better . Yesterday was a very significant announcement. And for people to believe apple has not been working on incorporating Artificial Intelligence into the iphone, that premise is just so misguided. Now theyre pushing all their chips in one direction and acknowledging the potential opportunity. If youre able to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into these phones, which were all using, that this is the most valuable thing in essence were carrying around with us, that will be a historic moment. Hey, scott weiss, please. I was trying to come to you anyway. Yeah, thanks for coming to me to be the voice of reason and set this will debate. Hey, wait. What . Apple is just a tired stock. I mean, it has always lagged innovation. Youve picked on me for that before, but its true. Theyve been in the poststeve jobs era a follower instead of a leader. And the market is just not willing to pay for that anymore. I do think the multiple compresses. The growth hasnt been there for years. You keep waiting for a phone refresh cycle. And they have been more and more depressing. All they do is improve the zoom feature on the camera. Joe talks about ai. I ask, what is the business use case . Whats the use case for ai in the phone . And is it going to be them leading or following . I suspect them following again. We dont even know the use cases for ai other than at the highest level other than searching for, you know, books or answers to questions with microsoft and chatgpt. Nobody was focused on the car. Its been ten years in the making, and it shows, to me, that the apple brand has atrophied a little bit. I know it will be controversial. If you go back 15 years ago, every auto company would have been jumping in to say, let us white label a car for you because youre so powerful. Theyve been unable to get anybody to do it. Theyre not a capital intensive company. They push all their manufacturing out to someone else, foxcom or whatever, being asset light. They cant find anyone to assume that capex burden. I dont know. I dont think this lack of being a first mover matters when it comes to a company that maybe hasnt done it first but theyve done it better, and they have such a large install base that none of that has really mattered. Covid upset the upgrade cycle. I think thats a fair assessment. Great point. China has been an issue. I think thats hurt the stock. Services growth has obviously the growth rate has slowed. Steve kovach covers this company. He joins us now, our tech correspondent. What is the problem with this stock in your estimation . Why hasnt it done anything in six months minimum . Reporter we were talking about ai and innovation and whether apple is innovating. Lets put that discussion to the side and talk about the geopolitical things happening right now that are impacting the core business today. Next week, scott, the Digital Markets act in the eeu will go into full effect forcing apple to allow other app stores onto the phone. We saw their idea for how they plan to comply with this law. That will put pressure on services. Yesterday we had that headline that apple met with the doj for the socalled last rights meeting before the department of justice files the antitrust suit that we know is coming for apple. That is another headwind heading towards them. Also, we know any day now were expecting the eu to fine apple 500 million euro after spotify complained about the practices with apple music. We know what apple thinks about that. Theres a huge fight between apple and its developer base, too. So we could talk about ai and whether or not thats going to drive iphone sales, things like that. I would point to 5g was a catalyst for the iphone a couple years ago. This could be the same thing even if its all marketing. We have to talk about whats happening today with the core businesses, and the head winds theyre facing. Oh, by the way, this current march quarter, iphone sales, they said, will be down 5 billion. And thats not nothing. The smartphone demand picture still has not recovered for apple just overall. Do you get the feel that whatever happens regarding ai, allegedly, at wwdc, is going to be the savior, so to speak, that investors are looking for to jumpstart activity in the stock again . Reporter im looking, scott, at what some of the competitors have announced. Samsung had their a iphone last month. Were seeing out of barcelona a bunch of smartphone brands talk up their ai capabilities. Its a lot of the same stuff that weve seen from smart phones for the last several years. Ai is happening in the iphone right now, today. Every time you take a photo with your iphone, there is ai happening. Every time you use your apple watch for a workout or that fall detection feature, there is ai happening there, its not talked about in the same way. If we do start hearing more about the generative ai features for the iphone and things like that, almost more marketing than a wiz bang brandnew feature. Its building on what apple and its competitors have been doing all along. Lets go back to the 5g example a few years ago bringing 5g to the iphone was a huge moment and spurred sales but it didnt really change fundamentally the way you use your iphone. Maybe the speeds are faster, but it didnt usher in this new realty of innovation, carriers and apple might have had you believe. I can see that happening here, too, just saying, look, were going to have all these new ai features on there, but were just branding it as such differently this time, maybe that gets people excited to buy the phones again like joe said or maybe people shrug it off and say i can do that. Its just a faster processor. Well have to see what they announce. It will be a big question and we will see, i suppose. Steve, thank you. Thanks for putting it into perspective, steve kovach. The last word before we move. Thoughtful what steve said. In june theyre going to have to deliver on what the ai strategy is in the last several months have been critical of them for not being able to communicate an ai strategy. If theyre able to step forth in june and do that, you could expect that sales will increase significantly, potentially rivaling what we did with the iphone 6. If they feel in that effort its nothing more than what jenny, steve, and kari are identifying, a stock thats really moving nowhere and kind of stuck in a sideways pattern. It is stuck sideways for two years. Five years, the bears have gotten run over. So alphabet has been a big topic. Their rollout of their product was a bit of a flop, i suppose you could say. Sundar pichai, the ceo, sends a letter to employees late yesterday calling, completely unacceptable the errors by the gemini ai app. Kari, you own alphabet. Brad gerstner, a big critic of it has tweeted, maybe sundar, great human being, but maybe hes not the guy to lead this company in the next frontier of where everything is going. What we know is apple is in a position because of their dominance in search to have a major impact in pro detective on search using ai. There is no reason that they cant do that and theyve worked on this for ten years. A product is not what you want right now. They botched it. Can they recover . Yes, they can recover. What makes you so sure . Why do you give them the benefit of the doubt . Of course they can recover. Theyre alphabet. Because theyve been so profitable for the past decade, they spent billions and billions on r d, much going into Artificial Intelligence. They havent been profitable because of spending the money on Artificial Intelligence but profitable because they have this moat of search. There are different ways you can use ai. Ask it to solve a problem, to write text, to ask it to create reports. Thats different from search. Im not saying this is easy to do, but lets not dismiss google right now. Its a relatively cheap stock. Weiss, how do you want to view alphabet here . Look, i would say youre being kind characterizing the rollout as a disappointment. The great thing about google is they have enough money to throw out any problem to fix it. This is a temporary setback. I dont know if the ceos head should be one of those. With the worlds eyes on ai, is there any launch thats more important to take some of the thunder away from microsoft and chatgpt and rolling out bard, as they change the name to genesis, gemini, whatever the name is. That was a bust, gemini. They blew it, but its only temporary. Its a setback in one of the best businesses. Im not sure theres a floor in the stock. Its a decent sized position. Im not worried about it. Other moves i want to get to, kari, you trimmed meta. Weiss, i want to hear from kari on meta . It was a portfolio decision. It had been a great stock. Telephones our largest position. It had grown. It got to a level that was just unbelievably cheap and as the world came to meta, its pushed the price higher and higher. We believe in the company and didnt want it to be in the position and we trimmed it. You trimmed adobe. Adobe is slightly different. The last year and a half it proved to be a really strong stock. Portfolio management decision plus, we understand that there are issues about ai being the texttovideo format and what competition might come their way. We dont know about that specifically but it adds risk. And up added to paycom. After it was down 45 because they have an introductory product. They botched it in the payroll business. We think the stock is very, very cheap based on the growth rate. Can we get away from this and look at the broadening of the market, which i dont know i would say its gone unnoticed but it feels like, jenny, it hasnt gotten the respect that it deserves, particularly over the last month. Look at this. 18, 19 minutes, we are spending time talking about well, because apple is a hot topic and whats been happening with alphabet and the other moves we had to get to with kari, over the last month, discretionary is up 7 . Industrials are up 6 . Financials and health care 4. 5 and tech up 3. We need to pay more attention to whats happening on the market. Generally the companies that have been performing and leading the industries are not exciting. Theyre not that interesting. Chipotle is up 14. Okay. Quanta is up 21. Lilly is up 18. Ge health care is up 27. Discovery is up. Wells fargo is up. Youre right. I think of our portfolio, things like united rentals, its just a rental company. Those are exciting names and we should be talking about it more. The conversation is broadening out. One of the things that both has surprised me about this year is there is still a lot of divergence between the s p 500 and value between the s p and russell 2000. Its much narrower than last year. Its easy for us to get stuck in the flashies of the nvidia. We should be talking about ralph lauren. Tape industry is up. Gm is up 15 . Ford up 17. Again, these are only in the last month. Do you know what i did this morning . I have a client sitting on cash. And on the train in this morning, i sawed today is the day. In the Dividend Income strategy i put half in a large position and half to work today. The client has been asking me when are you going to put it to work . Where did you put it . Flex, easterly, postal realty, everything in the dividend portfolio. Why was today the day . I looked at the portfolio this morning i need to speak broadly. Dividend stocks are so significantly behind the s p 500, and it just doesnt make sense. And when you look out there and look at small cap, we can talk small cap, mid cap, dividends all of the valuations are way lower than historical average, than their own historical averages, way lower than the relative averages, and so my theme this year talking about clients and where to put cash, my theme, which none of you will love, you can put in an anything but the top ten from here. The top ten have worked to this point but from here Going Forward you look out across the landscape and, youre right, its broadening, and the values are crazy. Ill tell you what, our viewers will love it if they can make money from it. Thats what theyre trying to do whether its in nvidia or Vulcan Materials or whatever. This idea of a Broader Market than people want to give it credit for. More cyclical, there has to be an ai halo fatigue moment. And its just because positioning and sentiment got so stretched overwhelmingly bullish, the larger question, and where you feel kind of confident about the overall structure of the market, the buy the dip mentality was in place this morning. The sharing was financials, real estate, energy. If you have that ai halo fatigue effect, is it more of a rotational element within the market . I think early signs are indicating thats what will unfold. If were right that were in the ninth inning of this blowoff top in momentum, the wildly consensus and admittedly successful trade of long qs and short iwm small caps might be due for a reversal. Maybe we are going to final lip get a little more momentum. By the way, the russell is up 3. 5 or so in the last month. That matches what the s p has done virtually tick by tick. Its just, you know you were getting that reversal. We are. Well, well have to see if it will last, is the key question. I think that reversal would have lasted but for nvidia coming to save the day. We are in a correction mode. It reignites the market. If you continue to push out the first cut in rates, i think youll see the market give up some of the momentum its had. Lets take a quick break. A setup on salesforce because the earnings are coming out in overtime. Kari and joe are in that. We have trades on Applied Materials and bitcoin. I know youve seen what bitcoin is doing. We own the stock, and health care is a sector of the market that administrations want to go after whether its this administration or a republican administration. Theres a lot of money in the system that we spend, and theyre targets. We know what happened with the Drug Companies is theres now caps on certain number of dangerous that were considered high priced. Not many and not what regulators were hoping. Unh is on the insurance side and provider side. We would expect this to continue for the next year or so. Does that mean the stock has morre risk . It does. Do investors need to think differently . I speck thats true. What about the investor who is speaking right now . Its something we have to look at carefully. What does that mean . Potentially is a stock that might not have the size in the portfolio that it has. Its been a good stock, a defensive name, but its a little bitof a game changer if we read through all of the data. I think we got to a place im comfortable with. I think were there. Salesforce, earnings in overtime. Sometimes you have to pull it out. Goldman sachs reiterated buy. This Earnings Report is fascinating to me for a variety of different reasons. Ai halo effect, is there fatigue there or not . Theres this technical element where the stock is trying to overtake its november of 21 high. A bad Earnings Report and now this nasty setup. The Options Market is implying a larger move than on average. The stock moves about 6 post earnings. The stock will move 8 . There needs to be more of a story than the cost efficiency and the margin improvement over the last six quarters. It has to be, well, our acquisition is really benefiting us in the ai integration. There has to be something more compelling because i think theres a lot of good news priced in. I think the stock can if up 15 but all about whether sales are growing. If sales are not growing more than 10 , thats a problem. Benioff, i think, is on with cramer tonight on mad money. Applied materials, they get a subpoena from the fcc. This matters because it is the largest u. S. Semiequipment supplier. The stock is down about 3 on this news, listen, whether its lamm research or kla, they are so critically important in chip fabrication and the stocks performed remarkably well. Extended, stretched, these are Quality Companies with great balance sheets, but if this lingers in the headlines for Applied Materials, youre probably going to expect at best the stock runs in place. At worst, you have yourself a correction. Weiss, you still own some bitcoin, i think, as we take a look here. Were the highest level since november of 21. I think we had it on one of our boards, can we take a look at that right now . Thank you. Its above 61. So whats your view here . To me, joe and i were talking about this earlier, an indicator of risk on in the market, nothing else. Do you see these hands . These are diamond hands, scott. If you look at bitcoin, the best performing asset since february 9, when i reentered the position, its up 33 . Thats just outstanding. To me this is really just weiss, i apologize, but im going to go down to washington, d. C. Mitch mcconnell is speaking right now. Lets listen. Theres a certain introspection that a companys profits, perhaps gods way of reminding you of your own lifes journey to reprioritize the impact of the world that we will all inevitably leave behind. I turned 82 last week. The end of my contributions are closer than id prefer. My career in the United States senate began amidst the reagan revolution. The truth is when i got here i was just happy anybody remembered my name. President reagan called me, mitch odonnell. Close enough, i thought. My wife, elaine, and i got married on president reagans birthday, february 6th. Its probably not the most romantic thing to admit, but reagan meant a lot to both of us. For 31 years elaine has been the love of my life, and im eternally grateful to have her by my side. I think back to my first days in the senate with deep appreciation, for the time that helped shape my view of the world. Im unconflicted about the good within our country and the irreplaceable role we play as the leader of the free world. Its why i worked so hard to get the National Security package passed earlier this month. Believe me, i know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time have many faults. Misunderstanding politics is not one of them. That said, i believe more strongly than ever that americas Global Leadership is essential to preserving the shining city on a Hill Ronald Reagan discussed. As long as im drawing breath on this earth i will support american exceptionalism. As ive been thinking about when i would deliver some news to the senate, i always imagined a moment when i had total clarity and peace the sunset of my work. A moment when im certain i have helped preserve the ideals i so strongly believe. That day arrived today. My goals when i was narrowly elected to the senate were fairly modest. Do a good job for the people of kentucky, and convince them by doing so, they might rehire me for a second term. That was it. That was the plan. If you would have told me 40 years later that i would stand before you as the longest serving Senate Leader in american history, i would have thought you lost your mind. I have the honor of representing kentucky in the senate longer than anyone else in our states history. I just never could have imagined, never could have imagined that happening. When i arrived here in 1984 at 42. Im filled with heartfelt gratitude and humility for the opportunity. But now its 2024. Im now 82. As eclowe are told there is a t to serve kentucky in the senate has been the honor of my life, to lead my republican colleagues has been the highest privilege. But one of lifes most underappreciated talents is to know when its time to move on to lifes next chapter. So i stand before you today, mr. President , and my colleagues, to say this will be my last term as republican leader of the senate. I will complete my job, my colleagues have given me until we select a new leader in november. And they take the helm next january. I will finish the job the people of kentucky hired me to do as well, albeit from a different seat. And im actually looking forward to it. So its time for me to think about another season. I love the senate. Its been my life. There may be more distinguished members of this body throughout our history, but i doubt there were any with any more admiration for the senate. After all this time, i still get a thrill walking into the capitol and especially on this venerable floor knowing that we, each of us, have the honor to represent our states and do the important work of our country. But father time remains undefeated. Im no longer the young man sitting in the back hoping colleagues would remember my name. Its time for the next generation of leadership. As henry clay said in this very body in 1850, the constitution of the United States was not made merely for the generation that then existed but for posterity, unlimited, undefined, endless, perpetual posterity. So time rolls on. There will be a new custodian of this Great Institution next year. It wont surprise you to know i intend to turn the job over to a republican majority leader. That is the republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell, his voice filled with emotion as he announces he will step down from that post come november, turning 82 years old last week. A significant figure, of course, that body over that period of time. You can hear the emotion in mr. Oconnells voice. Reporter absolutely this is a historic moment when you consider the fact he has been the longest serving Senate Leader. Of course this has come as mcconnell has dealt with health issues. He had moments where he froze, seemed to forget where he was, and then concerns about mcconnell and former president and maybe soon to be president again trump. The two of them have had disagreements in the past. A question how the relationship has functioned and what were hearing is hes going to step back from leadership. Hes not going to be the leader anymore, but he still will be in the gnat. The senate. Now the floor opens up to see which republican leader might take his place and whether thats going to be someone who will be more aligned with donald trump and his wing of the republican party. Significant intrigue for sure. Thank you. I want to go to steve kovach as well. We mentioned at the top of our Program Apple was holding its shareholder meeting. We are getting items out of that, steve. Tim cook talking about ai. Tim cook repeating what he said on the Earnings Call a couple weeks ago teasing that ai announcement that weve been talking about all day here. No further details other than its coming and is related to generative ai. Speaking of ai, one of the independent proposals by the way, all five independent proposals were voted down by shareholders. One in particular comes from the aflcio equity index funds about ai transparency basically asking apple to put out a transparency report out of how they tackle ethics in Artificial Intelligence products theyre working on. Apple recommended shareholders reject the proposal, they have ethical guidelines in place and the request was overly broad and could put out information about products they dont want to announce quite yet. That did get knocked down. Steve, appreciate it. Thats steve kovach. More trades ahead. grace didnt believe in magic. But her daughter was happy to prove her wrong. Im more confident that crowdstrike will be able to absorb a lot of the demand concerns that palo alto reiterated. I dont see that same story unfolding next week. Do you want to talk about apollo upgraded to overweight . Target 122. This has been in the strategy the better part of the year. Weve enjoyed a strong performance. They dont love the space but raise the target. We like the stock. Its been a very strong stock this year. They reported on the market, took an opportunity to sell some shares. We think theres a strong tail wind behind them because people are traveling. We still think at this price, 19 times next years earnings, and they bought back 9 of their stock over the last eight quarters, we continue to like it. You have expedia, right . Still havent gotten clear some some of these big target levels on a lot of the indexes in the season and nasdaq 100 that people were thinking could have been the top end of the range. So thats still an open question. We were talking yesterday about a close, its been kind of calm and somewhat slow at the core of the market. And all of the excitement is at the fringes. Its all crypto, buy oriotech a penny stocks. So you have to be mindful of that type of, not unstable order flow that runs through this market, and what it says about sentiment.
