Welcome from wherever in the world that you may be watching thanks to everybody for joining us here is how you your money are setting up their day you can see futures are down across the board dow futures off about 131 points right now, nasdaq down 58. This coming off a little more selling on wednesday, major averages all lower even though recently super strong smaull caps tumbling 1 . You cant go up every day. But one thing this did go up, is the vix. Something to watch the markets may be getting more jittery, perhaps covid strikes, the election, whatever it is, just take a lack at the vix. Well off recent highs but up 5 yesterday. And julianna has a look at the early trade. Good morning. It has been a tough start for european equities. We have red across the board, every major region trading lower. And this of course follows the weak hand overfrom wall street, but it does draw contrast to what weve seen in recent trade. Yesterday 9 stokxx 600 gained about 0. 4 , but today 1 worth of losses for the german index, here in the uk, the ftse 100 as well and lets take a look at the sector breakdown because this is perhaps the most interesting feature of the mornings trade and that is that investors seem to be sell being sick selling cyclical sectors as a faster pace. Travel and leisure down 1. 8, basic resources, banks and retail on the flip side, resilience coming through in media, health care and utilitieutilities. The only sector that is trading in positive territory, so clearly the concerns about rising global case numbers and the resumption of restrictions in parts of the United States weighing on sentiment and offsetting some of the euphoria that we saw on the back of the positive vaccine news last week and then again this week all right julianna, thank you very much. And cases may be up, bullpen but we have more positive news on the Vaccine Development front, this one developed by astrazeneca and the university of ox forward. Seema mody has more on that. And the preliminary findings of a phase two trial show that the vaccine is safe and triggers a similar immune response among all adults the promising results published in the plan slancet addre z astrazeneca says that they will also have phase three trials and back in the usz, starbucks is raising hourly wages for its baristas starting december 14, shift supervisors and cafe attendants will receive a pay increase of at least 10 if they were hired before september 24th. In addition all apply estart rates will increase by at least 5 , the move is as the Restaurant Industry braces for action when bill belichijoe bid office and there are Online Installment loans and revenue grew 98 year over year while net losses fell by roughly half. The firm plans to list undeny t under the symbol afrm. Feels like the same gaeight guys that are involved in every company. Yeah, especially those founders, they are all doing really interesting things. And max particularly, he comes out with like his Second Company that he has taken public and they all came from paypal thank you very much. Now to the president ial transition president elect joe bidens team is warning the Trump Administrations delay in handing over power could be compromising the government ereh coronavirus. And alice barr has the latest. Good morning reporter good morning, brian. Yeah, nbc news is learning that behind the scenes, a small number of Trump Administration officials are starting to reach out to the biden team, but not enough to make up for the official briefings that are still being denied as the nation stares down more than 250,000 coronavirus deaths my grandfather passed, my dad died reporter and president elect joe biden met with Frontline Health care workers in a virtual round table. This is like going to war you need a commander in chief. Reporter nbc news has learned some current and former Trump Administration officials have privately reached out to the Biden Transition Team signaling they believe that he will be the next president but with President Trump still not conceding and official channels stonewalling, the president elect says he needs access to real time pandemic data and vaccine planning. Im optimistic, but we should be further along reporter President Trump remains focused on swing state legal challenges, thousand paying for a partial recount in wisconsin. One is already under way in georgia where three counties discovered thousands of uncounted ballots. Weve not found widespread voter fraud. Reporter and with new unemployment numbers coming out today and expanded benefits expiring at the end of the year, lawmakers are under mounting pressure to reach a compromise for a new covid relief bill to keep Small Businesses from falling off a financial cliff. The big problem is that lawmakers in both parties remain close to 2 trillion apart in the price tag they want to see for a new stimulus bill. Back to you. Alice barr, appreciate it all right. Now to your Morning Money and your next guest says stocks for the short term could be stuck in a tug of war between mounting waters over the growing virus cases and hope surrounding the potential vaccine. Bill stone is president and cio at Stone Investment partners and joinings notic s now. We had huge pops on the pfizer and moderna news and now we seem to be kind of in a holding pattern. Do you think the market will take sort of the breather as weve gotten great new, were not moving on the assistrazeneca new, we want to see how it all plays out with distribution and time line . Yeah, i mean i think a couple things one, im calling it lockdown 2. 0. I dont anticipate that it will be as bad as lockdown 1. 0 because they are making some changes to it, so i dont see a complete, you know, economic collapse like we saw the first time but we are in the midst of that because we have to wait until we get the vaccine. I think the second part that really shows up in the markets, because the markets always look forward, so you have seen rightly so optimistic moves in the market when we got the vaccine news but weve gotten sentiment in terms of bullish sentiment very high right now, and that tends to be an indicator that you shouldnt be as bullish at the moment so it is not like i think that things will collapse or anything, i just think that you probably can be a little more selective and look for real opportunities here as you have noted, weve had an historic value agation gap, e valuation gap has never been wider in the history of the modern stock market. It has narrowed recently in part because people have sold some tech, bought some value. And i mean maybe even things like energy or domestic small caps do you think that trend will continue i do think that there is a real opportunity there one is im just a person who believes in some sort of version to the mean. Maybe we dont go all the back, but i do think that there are some opportunities im a big fan of some of the banks at the moment, as to a longer term play, but at the end of the day, they look really cheap relative so if you get in Economic Growth to continue and obviously with the vaccine, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel finally. Didnt know when it would company before, but now we know that it is coming at least by next year. So i think that at least makes some opportunity and even some of the industrials, i think, you know, actually phrma and health care, there are cheap stocks there too. Yeah, and by the way, cheap promo, but later on we have Matthew Harrison on, you will want to hear what he has to say, that is coming up later on in the show but back to this, we look at the banks, do you have to be a believer that Interest Rates will continue to rise . Were still under 1 on the ten year do you have to believe that Interest Rates will continue to rise in order to like the banks or can they succeed even if Interest Rates get stuck here . I think that you have to believe that Interest Rates will rise over time you know, they dont have to go up today, but it will be tough for them to really get their earnings power back without some sort of rise in rates. Again, they work on the spread in a lot of things and they are making up for it in other areas at least somewhat. In the short run, they dont see a bunch of loan losses which if the economy continues to recover, then they probably wont see that either. So that is the short term boost. Longer temp boost is that if the economy continues to recover, you will see rates drift naturally higher over time and that will be a tail wind bill stone, ill leave you for a long weekend and hitting that pinball game behind you im jealous. When we come back, stocks to watch rngs inclu watch, including a home Audio Company he whose stock is up 20 . Well show it to you and facebook employees, firing back accusing the company of forcing them back into the office amid outbreak concerns. And your morning rbi, you will want to hear this one, because it shows why timing truly is everything when it comes to investing. Dow futures down about 100 lets hit your stocks to watch. First up, sonos. Blowing past analyst estimates and the stock surging more than 21 right now. Bottom line, everybody is buying stuff for their homes and sonos seeing a growth of 67 in its direct to consumer business. Even better, they did it without discounting. Retailer l brands is next, their sales jumping 55 and the shares jumping with it, un1it up 16 . Demand for hope and Hand Sanitizer helping the numbers. Victoria secret also saw higher sales in sleep and lounge wear as more people are nesting at home however total sales did falling 14 , investors clearly dont care and wrapping up the hat trick, invidia, reporting strong Third Quarter numbers with record revenue from its video game and data center units. Investors may have been expecting a little more however. Invidia down just under 2 premarket and on deck, new york city families devastated as the nations Largest School district shuts down, sends kids home. What are more than 1 million kids going to do now we have a live report coming up. Todays big nuge number, 10 trillion, the total amount of outstandinmoga dg rtgeebt in the u. S. A record high. Welcome back the sun comes up at like 9 00 a. M. , sun goes down like 1 00 p. M. These days. You know what im talking about. But times square, no one there, but the lights are at least on joe kernens rollsroyce will be pulling up there soon dropping him off. Love you, joe. Welcome back turning to that developing story out of new york city, a tragedy for many kids and families the government shutting schools and sending kids home. Katherine creag is live outside city hall with the story that broke overnight and this is terrible news for tens of thousands of new york city families reporter it really is. Because weve heard from parents and most tell us that they are frustrated, they firmly believe that the School Buildings are the safest place for their children and even though the covid Positivity Rate, the 7 day average, is at 3 , within the city School Buildings, the covid Positivity Rate is less than 1 pr and why were here at city hall, this is where a large rally will take place a little later this morning with hundreds of parents and their children gathering here and they will hand over a petition or at least get it to the marrieds office, it has 11,000 signatures on it with families saying that they want School Buildings to remain open, they believe that that dynamic of having inclassroom learning oneonone teacher and Student Learning is so important to them but this is the tragedy as you said that all of these children, about 500,000 of them who were going into their School Buildings, it ends today the big announcement came yesterday in the afternoon that School Buildings closed today, full Remote Learning is now under way. And i dont know what your kid situation is, i have a 6yearold, lit me just tell you, Remote Learning is exceptionally difficult. Parents know that there is not a lot of learning in Remote Learning lets put it that way. And at the same time. You have families that are not as lucky as we are, they are not able to have rooms and wifi and ipads. These are working families that cant go to work if their kids are not in school. This is a big economic story as well for new york city and a lot of working class families reporter and that is absolutely right from what were learning from so many families, that there is this disparity, an economic despaisparit disparity, so many parents have to go to work, they cant be there to monitor their children. And the technical devices, there are 60,000 children without the protect cal deviper technical d. So 60,000 will receive paper packets. And the department of education is saying that it is trying to get the laptops and other technical devices to children so they can to the Remote Learning, but for now, they will be getting paper packets. Do the reg but for now, they will be getting paper packets. And we want everybody to be safe, especially older teachers that may be vulnerable, maybe kids bringing it home to multigenerational families,s about as you noted, the schools have been one of the safest places while the citys Positivity Rate is up, but the school Positivity Rate is like 0. 23 . They have done their job, they have been very safe so far reporter absolutely. From what weve talked about with school administrators, the School Buildings, they have the plexiglass, they have the equipment to be safe the ppe. So that is what a lot of parents cant wrap their heads around, the Positivity Raten with the schools is less than 1 . But again, what the Teachers Union going by is the 3 threshold that the city is going by and because we reached that, that is why the School Buildings are now closed but a lot of people are asking why are the restaurants and bars still open but the School Buildings are not. Yeah, it is a good question and so many families devastated by the news. And Michael Osterholm who is one of the biden gurus said that 42 of all First Responders, nurses, police officers, have kids in a school they may not be able to their jobs now katherine creag, nbc news 4, thank you. Take care. And were pulling back the curtain, showing you which executives are buying up the most of their own companys shares these stocks have yououtperform and the names you will only get right here on Worldwide Exchange. I dont know that is that old white stripes . Who is that . All right. Maybe somebody out there knows siri, what is that song . Welcome back, good thursday morning. S on or as i call it good friday morning because im off tomorrow here is what your investments look like. Stock futures are down 124 points selling as we get more selling across the board on wednesday. Major averages were all down yesterday, even the recently super strong small caps dumb you belled a little over 1 . But lets be clear, were still off to one of the best starts to a month in decades so a little pullback not surprising and maybe even a little healthy however, watch the vix the vix despite not a lot of news yesterday, spiking 5 now closing in on this\ not exactly a high level, nothing to freak out about, but the markets are clearly getting more jittery about something, programs the covid spikes, potential for more global lockdowns, or transition in the election either way, your homework is to watch that vix lets go now around the world. Were wideed worworldwide exchr petes sakes parsing the economic data. I wanted to say parsing at 5 30 in the morning town across the board, about 1 . Hang seng in japan lower all right. Lets move on. Time now for your weekly exclusive look at insider buying what companies are seeing the most buying of their own stocks by their own executives . Data coming to us exclusively from insider score. Com, thanks to them, and remember these stocks that weve been showing you now for months have generally been outperforming the market, so Pay Attention as always, were counting you done this is a short week, so well give you four names because it is a day early stock number four is essential Properties Real estate trust director there buying 381,000 worth of that stock. Number three, Morgan Stanley board member buying 1. 4 million worth of that big bank perhaps spurred on by slightly higher rates stock number two is lionsgate, board member making his single biggest purchase ever of the film company, grabbing 200,000 shares of the b class valued at 1. 66 million but the single biggest insider buy this week, it is a company our viewers know because of the profit, look at that camping board, a board member buying 4. 9 million worth of the stock pnd a and this is his second buy of the year but the first one was only 136,000 he was not in on the ipo, so this is really him just stepping in and buying a ton of the Company Board he sits on by the way, he is founder and ceo of the adams outdoor, huge insider buy there. So there you go, biggest booiuyf the week three of the four perhaps no doubt the g. O. A. T. Stocks as we call them, the get out and travel a segment that you will only see here every week on Worldwide Exchange now to the latest controversy surrounding facebook and more internal strive for the employees over calls to come back to the office seema mody is back with more on that and some of the other top stories. What are they beefing back at facebook well, this is actually a very interesting one and perhaps a note for other companies out there, hor, more than 200 have accused the company of forcing content moderators to return to work despite about the rising covid numbers. The claim came in an open letter by the employees to the company accusing it of needlessly risking lives to maintain profits. They are calling on facebook to allow more remote work and other benefits such as hazard pay. The Company Reportedly says a majority of its 15,000 content reviewers around the world will continue to work from home. More than 400 southwest Airline Mechanics and technicians may should not oon job, the carrier has alerted the workers of potential furloughs they had previously asked employees to take a 10 pay cut to avoid other cuts. And in phoenix, they have authorized to have an agreement with a Taiwan Company for a semi conduct tore there and it will provide funds for infrastructure the plan would be its firstsemi. And it will provide funds for infrastructure the plan would be its First Manufacturing if a sirlt facili u. S. Everybody is moving to phoenix, like 60 people lived there in the 70s today seema mody, thank you very much. And lets get back now to the markets which ended on a sour note yesterday. Stocks turning south but lets be clear, it is still a very strong november why . Because the s p 500 is up more than 9 . Halfway through the month of november one of the best starts to a month in decades lets bring in nate fisher from take Strategic Wealth partners here is the problem with investors, no bhaer whmatter whe them, they always want more. Thanksgiving dessert, whatever it is. What are you telling your clients that are probably sitting on big gains and wondering should i take some profits . What do you tell them . I tell thm em be 45ehappy wih what youve got. But in all reality, stocks have made a tremendous move given what weve gelt with in 2020 i think heading into year end, probably the market could grind higher given the technical picture is pretty bullish. You have the market broadening out, the momentum is there, but the fundamentals seem to be lagging where the market has ran and that has given the liquidity pumped in by the fed and the c. A. R. E. S. Act so i think having a decent cash position as we turn the page into 2021, not a bad idea. So i think that well get another pullback so have cash on the sideline and have your watch list ready to buy. And so a sobering outlook is it the idea of a vaccine top, the news been positive and now we have to bait for the logistics. Yeah, the vaccine will take a while to distribute. There are two different drugs that require two different supply chains. Our base case, we probably have to deal with covid for the next three to six months given the Rapid Testing that we still need to have, the contact tracing, the social distancing. And for the stock market, a lot of the reopening trades are probably a little ahead of themselves we still think that this is an opportunity to probably buy some of those more tech based ecommerce cloud type of commuting names. And these stocks have secretary uhe you car growth ayou secretu. And like who . Name some names. Last night you look at invidia print, one of our largest names. Pretty much a blowout quarter. Two big themes is gaming and data center. And these are paramount to where the world is moving. So they not only crushed earning, they raised guidance and the stock is down i think roughly 1 to 2 this morning so expectations were high, stocks had a tremendous run in 2020, but still a ton of growth for this company so the perfect example of if the name trades down on High Expectations over the next 2 to 3 weeks, this is a name where you can buy and be pretty happy with where things shake out the next couple years. Up 153 in a year you still see value in invidia tell me in a loi growth world, what you do you buy stocks with visibility and another quick one where we look at what is happening now, we methoded covid19, and quu dell has a test as we enter the depths of fluseason. The stock was destroyed on monday on the pfizer news, down 30 . Covid testing is not going away for probably the next 6 to 8 months this stock is cheap on every 34 metric and high visibility so that is another name that looks pretty attractive to us. All right qdel, that one out pullback in fact nature fish nate fisher, thanks for coming on on deck, wonder woman rolling out with a new strategy, how the expected blockbuster for Warner Brothers may change the Movie Theater game it is trending and it is next. It will it is a different year we all get it. Charlie brown and lucy, we will have holidays, it will look and feel different, but the rockefeller tree, not lit up yet, still a wonderful thing, flags, the lights. It is different. But the holidays are still here. I coukocould listen to this ally and maybe ilg. Cybersecurity fast food and grocery deliveries where among your stocks to watch first up is palantir shares are higher, it won a new deal with the u. S. Army to help modernize its Mission CommandSoftware Terms were not disclosed but by the way, palantir shares have almost doubled since its district listing ipo stock number two, give me a burger with a side of tacos. Jack thin the box reporting strn numbers. Same store sales rising 12 , shares up only about 11 this year and remember in many areas, fast food is now increasingly the only restaurant available open to the public. And finally, a extra sbr market sbeep ofweep of a deal the Parent Company of stop and shop is buying fresh direct all right. Sleeping on a star wars ship kinda, wonder woman streaming news and just exceptionally cute baby animal videos how is that for a mix . Seema mody is back with more on the top trending stories im just waiting for the an map video. And i have it for you disney as has releasedmap video. And i have it for you disney as has released its star wars lactic cruiser ship, a two day experience where guests will live an board a star ship and also announced new attractions at Shanghai Disney and the new wonder woman film is being released at hbo max and thooerts at the same time. It will debut december 25th, the same day it hits theaters. And it will be available for a month at no additional cost to subscribers. Amc ceo says that their theater chain is fully on board with the release plan and here it is, if you need a little panda pick me up, the Smithsonian National zoo is asking people to vote on the name of their three week old baby panda after millions have tuned into the panda cam to watch him. Voting closes on friday. So if you have any names, submit them, there is time. I vote for express. Do you get that . Thats it yeah, i did get na actually. Panda express anyway, on the cruise thing, this is your segment and your beat, it is cool, i want to sleep in like the millennium falcon or whatever but either way, when will we start to see cruising again, when do we set same from galveston again . What is the time line . So here is the thing. The cruise lines here in the u. S. Have been halted mid march because of the pandemic. And the hope is if they can get through all the protocols that the cdc has asked them to, that they will get back to see an early 2021, maybe february or march, although just yesterday carnival cancelled all of its cruises for january. So it seems like that start date continues to get pushed out. In the meantime they continue to rack up debt so certainly a sector that obviously entertainment, it is travel, but one sector within the s p 500, the worst performing stocks year to date, and names that were certainly keeping a close eye on with that said, this disney experience seems pretty cool the reyou truviews have been mi. Some saying that it is a great way to give their kids an immersive experience apparently you get to square off with a jedi and among other activities on board. It is a trap. Seema mody, thanks very much for joining us express, i liked it. All right, thank you on deck, Morgan Stanleys Matthew Harrison is here, how the Covid Vaccine could further impact the time line more good news on a thursday more than. And as you get out, if you go he out, you can always watch or listen to us live on the cnbc app or, heck, just put on the headphones and do it at home while the kids virtually learn in the background. Time for the morning rbi, the most random but interesting thing is also one of the best lessons that you could ever learn as a long term investor. And it is this if you try to time the stock market by selling stocks and buying back in later, you will proeblg get your face ripped or crush your returns over the past 20 year, jpmorgan found that if you tried to time the market and missed, ten best days in 20 years, your returns were cut in half ten days out of about 5,000 trading days think about that and even more important, the best days often come during the hardest times. Look at this the nine biggest single day market value increases with a value the entire market rose all came during a crisis five of those times were this year in the middle of a pandemic and lockdowns. Three came in a financial crisis and one during the do ttcom bubble so the lesson, you never know when the big days will come. You wake up, you hear the news about a vaccine, market soars but too late to get back in. The lesson is stay in and stay strong even during the worst of times. Random but hopefully interesting. Lets turn now to the race for a Covid Vaccine. Day it out overnight on the astrazeneca trials indicate that their vaccine also produces a safe immune response among adults include the elderly this is on the news of day taofm pfizer and moderna joining us, matthew 45harrison and we know that large majority of the fatalities globally have been among those over 65 many of those over the age of 80 Long Term Care facilities have been absolutely decimated. How good news is this for the most vulnerable of the population it is another encouraging data point, but i just caution that this is from a phase two trial, so it is not comparable to the data that we got from moderna and pfizer in the last two weeks. And so it is a signal that hopefully well see more encouraging results when they report the full phase thrdata, it is a signal, not a full efficacy data set like pfizer and moderna. Good point. But we should be getting the phase three or more data later on in the Fourth Quarter what is the time line on any other because as you pointed out, there is not a couple of vaccine candidates, there is i think literally more than 100. What is our time line . Right so we obviously have a phase three data from the first two which is very encouraging data and enough in my view that we can have confidence that vaccines will end the pandemic but in terms of getting data from additional vaccines, we would expect astra in the Fourth Quarter and then j and j sometime in the First Quarter and then a handful of other vaccines probably toward the end of the First Quarter or the fwink of t beginning of the second quarter. I understand that you are not a market strategist. You leave that to mike wilson and his team i get that but were seeing the market boom on this vaccine news just as you see it from the vaccine time line, is the market overestimating the near term value of a vaccine or truly can we see an end to this hell scape for lack of a better term . Yeah, it is a good question so i dont think the market, you know, from a Health Crisis standpoint is ahead of itself. These vaccine data are very strong, i think as good as anybody could have ever expected and what that means is that even with the first two vaccines, were in a position to vaccinate broad portions of the population, especially in the u. S. And western europe by the middle of next year. And that will position us to end the pandemic it doesnt mean that cases wont still continue, it doesnt mean that we still wont need to treat people, but we will be able to end the pandemic that is fantastic news. And now so much of the attention, and hopefully not too early, turns to the time line on delivery, the ethical question of who gets it first there is a hydrogenly important meeti hugely important meeting on november 24th. Who is the group and what will they be deciding sure. The cdc has a committee called acip, they review a lot of vaccines, but their job for covid is to list the priority groups in terms of who is going to get the vaccine first and why. I mean, most observers expect that and you you pointed out high risk elderly, mainly nursing home patients, would be among that list as well as hospital workers and First Responders the u. S. Probably by the end of the year will have enough doses to vaccinate about 30 Million People and so that is the initial group that will be focused on. And the other question of course is durability i saw news out last night, and at this hour my brain is kind of mush, for give me, that antibody response looked fairly strong in a number of people who recovered, this idea that well get immunity seems to be at least very positive that were not, we have some time line. The question on the vaccine is durability how long do we need to get shots every three month, can we get two shots and then foe five years . Yeah, it is an important question which we dont have full dare ta data on. The study that you are referencing looked at the did your afbltd of tdurability of te reaction of people who recovered from the virus and we know that they had stable antibody levels for about six months and more importantly, the cells that generates the antibodies were also stable for about eight months and so that brings hope that even if your antibody response were to fade, the immune system that you primed would be able to reproduce those antibodies if you were if you got the virus again. And so that you would be able to fight it off and be protected. We dont know on the vaccines. So what do we know about transport, to we need negative 100 degrees, expensive, hard to do on or can we do it in a refrigerator so pfizer requires ultra cold storage. But were investing in that and so im not really worried about transporting that. Moderna has less onerous requirements and more time in regular refrigeration. But i think in the end, well solve that problem and i dont think that you will to worry very much about that and we are close. I know you and your team working all the time giving us updates, we really appreciate it. Great work on everybodys behalf thank you very much. And so good news more good news as the advantaging even froadvantage advantaging vaccine front, nos everything, but something. And still we can feel pretty good im off tomorrow, ill see you monday good morning futures pointing to a lower open this morning after the worst day for stocks in three weeks. Breaking news overnight on the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, well show you you what they reveal about their phase two trial. And new York Public School kids are staying home today after the surge in cases forced a shutdown this is thursday, november 19, 2020, and squawk box begins right now.
