Good morning and welcome to the show im dominic chu in for Brian Sullivan here is how stock futures are looking to kick off the trading week what a week it will be as earnings week kicks off in earnest tomorrow well see the dow open up by 112 points the s p up by 11 the nasdaq up by 42 points as well this week well hear from jpmorgan chase, wells fargo, citigroup, delta thats just a few of them in terms of earnings reports due out this week as the earning season starts off. According to data, they say Fourth Quarter earnings are expected to be down 0. 6 of 1 which would mark the second straight quarterly decline that has not happened since 20152016. Maybe an earnings recession. Thats what folks are looking for perhaps this time around treasury yields in focus we see a Little Movement in the tenyear tnote, ticking slightly higher. Let us go worldwide. In the asian trade, stocks there hitting new 19month highs china, can you see there, coming just about just about three quarters of a percent to the upside you can see japan was closed for the coming of age day as well. Now, in early european trading, the cac in france up by onethird of 1 . The german dax about onetenth of 1 . Rahel solomon joins us with headlines. Well get to space cowboy later in the show. In the wake of Carlos Ghosns outing, nissan is planning a split from renault they call it war gaming, a total divide of engineering and manufacturing as well as changes to nissans boards despite efforts to improve relations on both sides, the partnership which produces 10 million cars a year has reportedly become toxic. The Trump Administration is planning to permanently halt its civilian Drone Program because the devices are made, at least partly in china. This is also according to the apt. They are halting 1,000 drones after deciding the risk of the drones being used by beijing for spying was just too high sources tell the ft that the interior secretary has not signed an official policy but is planning to pull the fleet from action with exceptions for things like emergencies Like Fighting wildfires and also training. And treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin says boeings 737 max crisis could curb u. S. Gdp in 2020 by half a point. He says that he still expects the economy to grow by roughly 2. 5 mnuchin says there is, quote, no question that the crisis will have an impact as boeing is one of the largest exporters in the u. S. Thank you very much for that update. Back to the markets now. The dow briefly touching the 29,000 mark for the first time on friday before stocks did pull back still the major averages posted gains for the week despite tensions between the u. S. And iran and the jobs report showing slower than expected hiring and wage growth last month lets break it down with cochairman and cio at pal said Capital Management dan, the jobs number was disappointing, but its, perhaps, not unexpected to see a little tempering, at least for the time being does it change the thesis for the bull run in the markets . Not really. And it definitely keeps the Federal Reserve at bay i think theyll keep equity ample in the market right now. Clearly there was a dramatic shift in policy early in 2019. Where we are today, i just think the next move might be down not up if theres any continued weakness in the overall economy. So, if it is if the fed stands ready, then how far could the market actually fall i mean, how much of a pullback would you expect to see before people come right back in and buy dips the way they have for the better part of three, four years now . There are some issues, when you think about boeing, for example, that will temper gdp growth but at some point boeing will get its act together and that will be a major impediment think about in the Fourth Quarter whats happened. We have bilateral trade deals between mexico and canada. We made a trade deal with china, at least a phase one deal. And theres at least now a clear path on brexit all these things are were overhangs on the market right now. Certainly from a psychology standpoint i think the psychology is extremely important here, particularly when you look at Capital Investment because you have all of the ingredients in place for a tech policy thats pro investment and other factors. We focus so much on macro for such a good while because its been the headline driver we now turn towards the micro, because earning seasontics off many investors say earnings is the driver behind the market what do you expect from this earning season we know the consensus is for a drop by more than 0. 5 . The consensus has been overly pessimistic and i assume that would be the same. We dont realize how adaptable corporations are with the environments theyre in because they have to be. In terms of interest rates, were also seeing steepening yield curves not just in the United States, but thats begun to go global, too, as weve seen the german and french yield curve. Im glad you brought that up. The yield curve will be a huge focus for traders and investors because of the Bank Earnings this week. They had a banner year in 2019 does that continue in 2020 for the banks . You have you mentioned valuation. Theres a lot of the valuation support in the banks and the consumer is in extremely good shape the Balance Sheet of the consumer is in extremely good shape. And well see how things go. I anticipate profits will be quite good at banks. All the Money Center Banks should do well. Positive on the banks, thank you for joining us this morning always well, now to the latest on iran where we are seeing massive protests over the downing of that ukrainian passenger jet last week that killed everyone on board demonstrations taking place in tehran and other cities with people condemning the downing of the airplane and the subsequent denial by the government there its a diplomatic crisis for that country as President Trump issue says new warnings to leaders in those countries in twin twitter statements, one in english, another in farsi, trump called on iran not to kill protesters as the usa is watching and in another tweet, telling the demonstrators that the u. For the phase one signing after china offers rebuke to the powers that be and china and washington have agreed to new dialogue aimed at addressing new reforms eunice joins us from beijing perhaps, eunice, well start with the trade talks what the expectations . There was some question about whether or not we would see a january 15th signing but everything looks to be on track, right . Yeah, i would say so. The expectations are that the negotiators are going to sign the deal at the white house on wednesday. I was speaking to some folks here in the u. S. Business community as well who said some of their executives have been invited as well to this white house ceremony and some of the industries that would be represented would be in finance, agriculture as well as energy. So, they understand that the text will include purchase targets. There might not be a line by line itemization for example, they say of this amount of money well be purchasing, say, this amount of wheat. But there will be those detailed numbers in the text, im told. Also theres an expectation that wording over trade secret protection is going to be included that is much anticipated as well pledges for finance, energy and Sports Broadcasting openings, which should benefit individual companies. So, the text is expected to be released after the signing its still unclear, though, to many who im talking to here as to exactly how the deal is going to be implemented. For example, theres been a lot of talk, like i said, here about how those purchase numbers would be included, but that the purchases dont only, for example, include agriculture but would also include manufacturing. So, will the chinese actually be able to make good on those promises when the economy here is slowing down . Dom . So, lets take our attention now towards whats happening across the taiwan straits there. There was a big election this past weekend and it was a very large victory for president tsai ingwen. Shes the one whos become a little proautonomy for taiwan were not saying independence, but this is a big deal when it comes to it the taiwan china relations. Take us through what this election victory means for the incumbent president there. Well, for the incumbent president , as you said, shes seen as antichina she has been riding on that platform at one point people didnt think she was going to be able to win until what we saw happening in hong kong. A lot of people in taiwan had looked at whats going on in hong kong, felt that beijing had interfered too much in hong kongs affairs and this has been a model that beijing has been touting as one that could also apply for taiwan since one of the main goals of beijing has been to reunite taiwan under a similar framework as hong kong so, tsai ingwen is now, you know, the winner, very clearly, for the island in terms of what this all means for the u. S. , there is an expectation now that beijing is going to become much more tough in its approach towards taiwan as well as in hong kong. That was reflected in the commentary that we had over the weekend when state media described taiwans leader, tsais victory as a fluke and also blamed the taiwan vote on antichina political voerss in the west, and specifically called out the United States dom . A very complex situation there, especially with u. S. Ties to taiwan as well. Still on deck for the show, dusting off the moth balls after a decade gm bringing back an old nameplate to u. S. Im dominic chu in for Brian Sullivan with a rush to kick me. We could be making another run towards record highs we had fall off last week. The dow industrials up by 112 points if these futures move into the opening the s p by 12 points and the nasdaq up by 40 as well. Treasury yields also a big focus. They are moving ever so slightly to the upside across various parts of the yield curve tenyear treasury notes, 1. 544 . Twoyear, 1. 58 . Lets check on the asian markets. Trading near 18month highs. By the globe there, its predominantly green. Japan closed for a holiday the shanghai composite up threequarters of 1 the Indian Markets up by half a percent as well. Lets turn our attention to whats happening with the european trade lets spin that globe over there. Were seeing a bit of a mixed picture. Still, the major in france, uk and germany moving to the upside paced by ftse 100 in the uk, up by 0. 5 of 1 as 2020 trading kicks into high gear, new numbers from our friends at Bespoke Investment group imply Company Analysts only see upside for modest stocks this year the average price of individual companies show that the typical stock is projected to have just about 5. 5 upside in 2020. That compares with the end of 2018, when projected gains implied a 24 gain for the average s p 500 stock. So, a big move higher back in 2018 some more tempered expectations, you can see here, for this year at least now, big headlines coming out of a major energy and Technology Conference in the middle east with our own hadley gamble sat down with the saudi energy minister, ceo of exxonmobil and more. Hadley joins us. What was the key takeaway from this, given all the tensions in the middle east right now . Reporter it was interesting to hear for the first time from Saudi Arabias Energy minister, Royal Highness prince abdulaziz what is the mindset in saudi arabia after the events over the last few days . Are they secure . Did the president make the right decision to kill soleimani whats going to happen in terms of volatile, can we expect more geopolitical pops for the oil price . I asked him, do you agree with what the United States has done here and did the president get it right listen in. The president of the United States is the president of the United States. He can do whatever he wish and hes not certainly accountable to me or anybody in this audience reporter so, thats interesting. So, hes not accountable to anyone in saudi arabia he can do whatever he wishes he did go on to say United States is a Strategic Partner in the region and the security of the region is paramount, not just to the folks sitting right here, but more globally because the Energy Market binds the world together not the first time weve heard that statement i had the chance to catch up with various ceos. We sat down with the ceo of exxonmobil and i asked him specifically about the volatility in oil price and what he expects in the middle of the year were in the middle of an election cycle what he was hearing from various candidates on the democratic side of the field. And is elizabeth warrens plans when it comes to fracing dangerous for the industry listen in. I tend to think that most policies and actions taken, whether youre republican or a democrat, will have to try to striblg the right balance. They may move one direction or the other. But i think huge step changes that bring discontinuity to our industry will have huge impacts on the society and those people of that society and that will be a natural hedge or mitigating factor for big and significant changes. Reporter darren woods, the ceo of exxonmobil, weighing in on what he sees as potential headwinds for this industry as we move into not just the rest of 2020 off the back of days of volatility weve seen in the region and also whats going to happen with regards to the president ial election and, frankly, a consistent theme ive been hearing not just at this conference but over the last few days its not just the geopolitical headlines theyre worried about, but also finding a way to navigate what happens next in the Shale Oil Industry as a result of so many people being in debt there in terms of the highly leveraged industry and what that means, inevitably, for production u because at some point, as so many ministers have said to me privately, these investors will want a return when they dont get that return, theyll stop investing hadley, i mean, we focus very much on some of the oil majors in the United States, the shale oil producers, given the dynamic in the middle east and oil prices right no you. You mention you sat down with the heads over at total. Is there any sense from the european majors, the europe Oil Companies with regard to what the Current Situation holds, how are they navigating it and were there any comments from total specifically about the big fine they had with apache. We saw apache shares jump on that is total excited about that as well reporter when you take a step back and think about 2020 and into the next decade, total has been focused on renewables and how they can at the same time as growing frankly, growing their business, they want at the same point to be able to look to european leaders and say, hey, we are doing enough we are on board with what so many folks have been telling me is the greta effect here and the disconnect between the fact these policy makers dont seem to understand what it means in terms of the impact on the industry the transition to renewables the fact that the oil and gas Industry Needs to continue to look at its base, look at its bread and butter the fact that, frankly, when they talk about this over the long term there are significant implications for not what weve seen coming out of european leaders in terms of that policy but what happens next in the United States. I think he was focused on saying, were doing a lot but we have a long way to go in terms of trying to make the policy side of things match the profits. Hadley, a key conference in saudi arabia thank you for the breakdown of all the big themes. Now to the latest on iran where were seeing massive protests over the downing of that ukrainian passenger jet last week that killed everyone on board demonstrations taking place in tehran and other cities with people condemning the downing of that airplane and the subsequent denial from the government its a diplomatic crisis for that country as President Trump issues new warnings to leaders in the region. In twin twitter statements, one in english and the other in farsi, trump called on iran not to kill protesters as the usa is watching and in another tweet telling the demonstrators in iran that the u. S. Stands with them. Much more on this story all day long keep it right here on cnbc back to the markets. Stocks looking to open back in record territory as investors await the kickoff to big earning season citi, jpmorgan chase, wells fargo and more, as you can see on this wall, reporting this week alone the big banks certainly a focus. Now, on Fourth Quarter estimates are expecting to fall 0. 6 of 1 . This would mark the second straight quarterly decline that has not happened since 20152016. Barrons out with its roundtable over the weekend saying there is almost no chance of a recession in 2020. In fact, the consensus of the ten veteran economistses they polled is cautiously optimistic. Joining me is chief Investment Officer at bleakley Adviser Group and a cnbc kricontributors well this is a big deal because it takes our attention on wall street away from macro and geopolitical and a little bit more towards whether or not companies are healthy in america. The banks especially are they companies are certainly healthy in terms of their Balance Sheet. But we are seeing, of course, this slowdown in Earnings Growth a lot has to do with Profit Margins. When we look back to 2019 in this earnings season, revenues will be up and earnings down slightly some is good, some is bad. Labor costs are rising rise in labor costs are crimping Profit Margins thats good for employees because those that are working are getting paid more. But it definitely impacts the earnings side for the employers. So, then that begs the question, okay, what do employers do to mitigate this decline in Profit Margins . By paying more to employees, do they slow down hiring because they need to maintain their labor costs as a percent of revenue . Do they reduce hours for those that are working do they reduce Capital Spending . Because theyre not going to sit idly by and take that decline in profit margin. We have to see what their reaction is to this. You could make the argument, if the economy does well, that should make a back drop for companies to make more money, pay employees more, shoulder the burden of higher costs, no matter what they are, commodity or otherwise is this why companies are becoming more cautious just because of guarding Profit Margins, even though revenues are liesing . I think so. If youre making less money, you have less excess cash to make those expansion plans, to make those hiring plans yes, it is a big deal if earnings begin to slow that will thern have a direct impact on economic growth. Again, those employees that are working are getting paid more. Its not necessarily its an all negative thing its a mixed bag as profits go, so goes expansion plans and so goes the economy. Lets talk about the crossroads of the economy in companies as well. Lets talk about the boeing situation. The company now denied former ceo Dennis Muilenburg severance when he was ousted for his handling of the 737 max crisis but a new report says hell walk away with 60 million. Outrage. Among the comments, one victims family saying, quote, he should be filing for unemployment its sickening how many great engineers could they hire for that kind of money . All of this as airbus is set to overtake boeing as the worlds biggest planemaker once boeing reports its results next week. I bring this up because economists and even treasury secretary mnuchin have talked about the impact from the grounding of the 737 max is boeing one of those we have to watch with regard to a bellwether for the economy in the first quarter, the stopping of the max production, could cut gdp growth up to 0. 5 . It is profound the hope is the back half of the year they get back to normal and we get that back while theres definitely an impact, no question, i think the assumption it comes back in the back half mitigates the worries of the first half. Lets talk about the consumer its been the big driver of the economy. Arguably for the last couple of years. The National Retail federation is holding its big show in new york it is called the big show. Courtney reagan is covering all of it for us here. Courtney, what exactly are some of the big takeaways from the big show in retail in new york you know, dom, now that the holidays are in their Rearview Mirror retailers have to focus on 2020. Technology players from microsoft to delivery startups want to be part of that vision going forward. The National Retail federation holds this big show. Its under way in new york city. Best buy and lowes will speak on tuesday looking forward, of course, requires fixing what isnt working now or hasnt worked so far. This is what kohls holiday sales which they put out just days ago. Im very confident around where were going. You know, we did not meet expectations for the holiday time period. Certainly didnt meet my expectations womens is 30 of our business its 70 private brands. So if we hit some speed bumps there, it has a major impact in the company. We have our arms around it Companies Like texel 3d body scanning will court kohls looking for new improvements the expo florida is kind of like retails Consumer Electronics show this year Artificial Intelligence to help search and discovery and Inventory Management tools to lower out of stocks on shelves. Those are among really the trend Tech Solutions we saw in the Innovation Lab dom . Courtney, stick around for a second because were going to stick were going to keep peter around as well the nrf has this big retail conference theyre talking about all the trends in the industry the big trends we have to watch as investors have to do with whether or not were still spending as a body of citizenry here in the United States. Are we and can it continue to power the economy . We are, but i think the pace of retail sales is good if not great. The Holiday Season people were estimating came to around 3. 5 its fine but weve seen stronger periods of growth we have a savings rate thats higher we have the use of revolving credit thats sort of shrinking. We saw that in the november number you wonder why consumers are beginning to save more im not sure exactly why i would define it, again, as good not great its enough to offset the weakness in trade and manufacturing and Capital Spending where thats been the soft spot of the u. S. Economy. Courtney, i want to give the last word to you because one of the things peter spoke about is this idea that companies are dealing with increased costs retail certainly as an industry is dealing with costs. Not just with labor, but also the raw inputs and, perhaps, tariffs as well. How much are those margin issues permeating around those companies and ceos that are at nrf this year . I think those are two really important ones to think about when you talk about labor and wages because we know even minimum wage is going up in many places that impacts sort of your front line employees at many stores. Also the talent pool is smaller so you have to pay more to get the best talent. Also you want to think about things like the cost of investing in your infrastructure so many of these retailers started with brick and mortar presence, later bolted on this Digital Business and theyre still trying to bring the two of those together that costs an awful lot of money to serve the consumer as seamlessly as we all expect to be served. When we think about kohls, we dont think about kohls. Com or as a store for a retailer to fulfill that transaction, it costs a lot of money and those costs arent going away i think investors will start getting more discerning about how long that leash is going to be until they say, investments, you made them. Now we need to see the profit. Big themes at the nrf big show thank you very much, Courtney Reagan peter, thank you for breaking down all those big themes for us as well. Coming up on the show remember the hummer . General motors is said to be bringing back that big brand with a twist details coming up. Two dow components are getting new ceos today boeing and nike. Thats a big but. And a very big difference the pickup will be first of line batterypowered suvs lebron james will help promote the hummers return. A super bowl commercial starring the star is in the works it will be a oneoff rather than a full revival of a standalone hummer brand quite a different hummer. Theres a changing of the guard today in the boardroom for two major companies. David calhoun takes the reins as ceo of boeing as Dennis Muilenburg was fired over the crisis of the 737 max. John donahoe becomes nikes fourth ceo in their history, inheriting a Profitable Company and the challenges carried over from his predecessor, dean parker jeff, great to talk to you. Lets start with boeing. David calhoun has a very daunting task. What does he have in front of him and what should he be focusing on in the early months of his new tenure . He does have a daunting task. He has to establish a clean break from his pretty sdecessor he was very supportive of Dennis Muilenburg when calhoun was chairman he doesnt want to alienate anybody by throwing muilenburg under the plane, so to speak he also has multiple constituencies to address, everything from u. S. And Global Regulators he has angry air carriers, confused, general flying public, morale issues in this cache of emails that has just been released hes so well skilled for this. Having led massive scale, i dont know, 65,000 people or more in the aviation infrastructure space at ge hes been a very successful ceo before at nielsen. As very active executive at caterpillar, he helped them reposition strategies, particularly for china i think hes all dressed up and ready to go for the jo be. Lets talk about what kind of challenges he will face. You mentioned a couple of them theres a feeling, perhaps eeshgs an insider. Hes been part of boeing for too long, he wont bring a new set of eyes or shake things up does David Calhoun have to worry about the perceptions that hes too close to the situation at boeing thats the great advantage he brings there is a notion of a messy search for a savior from the outside that some boards of directors fuel ied by oprah that head hunters and some of the media where we love the drama. But the truth is, while theres not there are not many things harvard, yale, wnorthwestern, th they agree the insiders do better than the outside hires. Ibm is the exception to the rule where nadella has tripled the performance at microsoft edging it up there with apple and amazon as the worlds most valuable companies these are things the insider can do knowing where the problems are knowing who you can trust, knowing the external challenges. Hes a trusted known player than an unknown from the outside. I dont hold that against him at all. He also has a certain advantage, which is hes not piloting this thing alone. His chairman was the former ceo of Continental Airlines is hugely valuable with his relationships with the air carriers, which obviously is a pretty hot area of concern and his greg smith, his inside cfo, has always been head of strategy. He has a great relationship with the board. Hes more than just a cfo. Hes a wonderful culture carrier. Before we let you go with a few moments left, lets talk about the situation at nike. This is john donahoe, another seasoned executive taking over the reins at nike. Hes a tech guy. Hes going to aconsumer Products Company what are the dynamics going to be like there . This is the challenge because coming in from outside, if its a time of crisis, again, we do better with an insider in this case, going to the outside, donahoe is somebody who actually, he has been positioned inside. He knows the company a bit from within, but he has a great history at ebay, very strong history running a service now that Bill Mcdermott has took over for him he understands, i think, the space very well that nike has had to work on both the Retail Consumer and the technical front. Hes replacing a very successful guy, mark parker did a great job but there was a rocky succession going into that. Jeffrey sonnenfeld, great for your insights.
