Transformation which will catch every part of our society and our economy. And we will do it because it is the right thing to do. Investors want their say. Carl icahn turns hostile in its bid for hp and dell shares dropping in after hours trade as they slash its full year revenue cost and blames a chip shortage from intel. I feel like a bit of a broken record saying this every day, but we have new wall street record highs yesterday for all the three majors yet again inching higher yesterday more optimism on the trade talks as well with the u. S. President saying that they are in the final throes of reaching a potential deal and that has given a boost to asian markets as well. The stoxx 600 reached a four year high. So very good dumomentum and you can see that there is a green board right behind me. All the majors are trading positive ftse 100 the outperformer up about 30 points. Good performance in the Mining Sector so that is the uk. Xetra dax up about a ten it th t as well. Pointing in the right direction. And we are getting momentum in the last half an hour or so. Switching to sectors, we have some of the cyclicals trading on the down side, chemicals just below the flat line. One company in particular were looking at is lufthansa, they are down after they announced plans of selling off their catering business. Up at the top as i mentioned, miners having a good day today up more than 1 leading the charge for european sectors. Household goods and luxury continue to rebound this line with the recovery were seeing in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as well. Banks also having a bit of a rebound in todays trading so a lot of green on the board but what is interesting is despite the positivity in equities, also in fixed income the ten year treasury trading around 174, about four basis points lower than last friday. You would think with the u. S. Stock market continuing to make record highs, that the fixed income space would also see a bit of selling pressure. Not the case this time around. Were continue to see money flow in could be on concerns about inflation data worth bearing in mind that we have crucial spending numbers coming out of the u. S. Later today. Personal spending and the pce deflator ten year bunds also trading at around minus 35 basis points a similar theme playing out here coming is off a bit this morning, but generally that is the direction. Also one thing worth bearing in mind as well, later tonight the poll will be released around 10 00 p. M. And the election polls have been watched closely particularly after yesterday where there was a narrowing of the lead over labor. And on the other side of the atlantic, President Trump says that the u. S. And china are close to finalizing a preliminary trade deal after top negotiators held talks by phone yesterday. Trump also hopes for a positive yut co outcome from the protests in hong kong. Were in the final throes of one of the most important deals in trade ever. But at the same time, we want to see it go well in hong kong. I think it will. I think president xi can make it happen i know hed like to make it happen and were joined by an associate professor of economics. Thanks so much for being with us if not much is achieved in that phase one deal, what is the point of it . It is kind of like a phased deal both sides can say that they made some progress it is a big gift for President Trump because weve seen the stock markets rally. But the phase one deal is really about the negotiable stuff in the first place. The more difficult nonnegotiable items are put back, delayed, and we dont really know what will come out of that so unless old tariffs can be rolled back for china, it cant really be seen as a victory for them this is just about perception then this is Retail Investors seeing the stock market rise and trump being able to say were getting there, weve made some kind of a deal does it matter from the chinese perspective when you talk about the domestic coffntext . In china it is really about the real economy, but the items that have been xwoeaeeen negoti including ip enforcement and opening up Financial Services to foreign companies, it is consistent with their longer term goals there is so much of a focus on technology and innovation these days ip protection is absolutely critical but what i would say is that there is a difference between what is written in the law and actual enforcement the legal system is quite comprehensive. The patent kind of protection mechanism is there it is really about enforcement but even on that, the chinese are focused on substantial progress there seems to be two sticking pointsit comes iko como the trade deal back in may, china didnt want to write any of the trade deal into law, they did not want it written on a piece of paper and that ties into your enforce ability point. And now they are asking for repeal of tariffs. In the absence of that, china really arent getting anything so what is their incentive to go along with it if they will not end up with the repeal of tariffs and only thing that they will have to offer is buying more of cultural goods despite the recent tensions, i still have to say that the u. S. china relations is still very important for china and the recent tactic is to put off, delay, wait until the election, see what happens during the election. Maybe there will be somebody new, maybe not but the election dynamics does change things a bit. So the wait and see strategy is what the chinese have pretty much adopted because unless President Trump is totally committed to wanting a deal, no matter how many concessions, it wont a make a deal. It seems to be low hanging fruit. So they can publish a document saying well strengthen intellectual property, but the devil is in the enforcement. This is something that they have been doing for a long time now even before trade wars and actually you see that china is being included in many of these global indices and that was going to happen irrespective so for them to say that well encourage more foreign investment, that is just low hanging fruit. It is, but i do believe on these two issues they are very genuine in terms of pushing toward greater progress because it is good for china anyway. Enfor cement is a little more tric tricky so they are taking suck stand difference steps to make sure that enforcement will also take place. But thalg take time. If you want chinese to reduce the state influence, i think that that is more of a nogo area and it is a false dichotomy to separate them and they will Work Together on all fronts so if it is just low hanging fwru fruit, the more deep reforms the administration have said they would like to see happen, do you think in terms of time line, is there any incentive for the chinese authorities to allow that to be progress between now and november next year when you have the u. S. President ial election Structural Reforms will take a long time. China has to deal with the domestic issues including the slowdown so i think it depends on what we mean by strublgctural reforms if you are talking about more technology, yes, that is consistent reduced impact of the state, i think that it will be difficult to see that happen and well talk about the impact on the segment on the economy in the next segment. The found has weakened against the dollar a survey published tuesday shows the leads fall to 11 points from 18 with registration now over, go data has revealed that more than 2 million under 35s have applied to vote since the election was called last month. Meanwhile the eu chief brexit negotiator will reportedly prioritize striking a trade deal with the uk after the brexit they will focus to getting a score trading arrangement when the transition phase is set to close. However both sides will face a tight deadline to finalize a deal and the Eu Commission president elect has raised the possibility that the eu executive branch could relax its ex existing budget rules to increase growth. And of course this has been a topic of conversation since the debt crisis in europe. How is she saying this would work well, this has been a topic for some time. And president juncker made different comments and has been using the full flexibility of the fiscal rules but also there is criticism saying that the rules need to be updated. So when we talk about the next European Commission, the focus is more on you how the fiscal rules could be reformed in the coming years rather than perhaps the tough rhetoric that sometimes we saw between the commission and certain Member States but lets take a listen to what was said earlier this morning in strasburg specifically about the fiscal rules we need to rely on what makes us strong, our single market, our single currency. It is high time to complete our economic amonetary union to deliver growth and jobs by increasing macroeconomic resilience we must use the flexibility allowed under the stability and growth pact to give the time and the space for our economies to grow and at the same time, we must support Member States with targeted investments and Structural Reforms so fiscal rules is going to be one of the main topics for the next commission but also brexit this is going to be a big theme in the coming months and when it comes to brexit, she is open to further extensions and she said earlier on in the European Parliament that she will always be a remain or lets take a listen. We will respect the decision taken by the british people. We will work closely to find solutions to common challenges especially on Security Matters but one thing has to be absolutely clear whatever the future holds, the bond and the friendship between our people are unbreakable and making some remarks about brexit and a new team will be voted and is expected that it will be approved in a few hours time in strasburg. And so the new team in brussels is set to start working next week i want to ask about the new team because it has been a bit of a bumpy ride getting to this point not least for france and the initial candidate put forward by president macron for the role there representing france would you say that most of those obstacles have been overcome or is this just the beginning of a challenging Commission Presidency i would say it is likely to be very challenging because even though now we have a team, we dont have a full team in the sense that we dont have a uk commission for example and in that regard, the european commissi commission, it could be challenging. We could see a lot of negotiations in the coming month and then of course there is a lot of very difficult subjects to fix you said u. S. Trade relations, the rollout of 5g, relations with china as well and how big is this ambitious on Climate Policy a lot of things to contend with and this is just the beginning. Thank you very much for breaking it down for us if you want to get involved in the conversation, you can follow us on twitter. Shares in German Office supplier have hit the brakes. It is trading near the bottom even though the brake maker has maintained its full year outlook. The firm also reported a rise in Third Quarter revenue and earnings it says at the end of september incoming orders totaled 5. 2 billion euros. And shares in dell fell after they cut its full year revenue g guidance they say a shortage of chips has impacted their inventory pc sales of course account for almost half of dells total revenue. And xerox is doubling down on its efforts to merge with hp and has announced that it will discuss its latest proposal directly with hp shareholders. Their chief executive notified hp about the newly hostile offer after hps board rejected a 33. 6 billion proposal earlier this month hp Board Members insisted at the time that the earlier offer had significantly undervalued the company. Activist investor carl icahn holds a stake of more than 10 shares in both companies ended tuesday lower. Meanwhile Elliott Advisers has commented publicly on the bid for altran saying it does not reflect the Intrinsic Value and insists that the price is too low. Elliott has urged the French Company shareholders to examine all the details before they accept the offer altran stock is trading up about 0. 2 lufthansa is ready to sell its catering operations to a Swiss Airline catering firm. The German Airline says in a statement the sale would allow to focus on its core business as the Carrier Market grows increasingly competitive they have not disclosed the gnks fchks detai financial details but the German Trade Union says that they may have strike action if they are not protected. And the wealth fund has reported that officials from the oil giants met with the Abu Dhabi Investment authority and other investors this week. It is intended to raise funds for a listing scheduled around the 11th of december and retail subscriptions have now exceeded 7. 2 billion so worth pointing out that they need to raise about 25 billion plus, so that 7. 2 billion isnt quite enough meanwhile chinas industrial profits fell at their sharpist pace in eight months during the month of october this highlights the impact that trade war has had. Profits fell almost 10 compared to the same period in 2018 it is the third consecutive month that profits have contracted this chinas industrial sector. Were seeing a slowdown in quite a number of areas in the economy. From the governments perspective, is it about managing that slowdown, keeping growth rates stable not so volatile rather than trying to keep them high do you think . Absolutely. Stability more than high growth is the priority now. They have come up with things like finance, trade, capital and the expectations so they recognize the need to slow down the growth but also it is more stable growth. I think the mindset has permanently changed. But china is feeling the pressure from both the inside and outside. So were seeing most of the slowdown coming from demand. How many more cars can Chinese People buy but of course consumption will still have there is still a lot of optimism for that because of the Additional Services and travel and all that. But so far in the recent in the next short while, china will go to a transition from the old model to the new model and well see slow growth in the interim and with respect to the companies that are hurting and investor profits declining, in the u. S. What President Trump is doing is he is offering compensation for the parts of the economy that have been hit are you seeing that in china as well, is the state actually proactive and offering subsidie or even reimbursement . A lot of these sectors have suffered from excess capacity in the past and that is doing from subsidies of the past. So the general trend is trying to manage that transition, increasing private sector dynamism because it is actually the private sector that is providing the jobs so i think that they are very careful about unleashing another expansion and risking tortidistg the allocation everyone more because they are treading a fine line between growth. And you mentioned changes to markets potentially as a consequence of the trade tensions and i wanted to sort of if you were to take a snapshot of the chinese economy ten years ago and today, and if you were to imagine that change without the trade tensions, would the evolution have happened at the same pace and in the same way . I would have imagined that it would happen faster. Capitalization was one of the major priorities, even giving more flexibility to the Exchange Rate because they wanted china to be to have international kapts m Capital Market centers but they delayed that and they missed a good window when growth was pretty solid to really open sun financialization in particular and now with the growth slowing down and with expectations, they are very much afraid of capital outflow so they delayed the process but the Financial System needs foreign competition. This is a stage in which the domestic banks are more competitive, so they can withstand a lot of the pressure. And in the last couple days, china has launched their International Dollar denominated bonds and raised about 6 billion in capital again to your point of opening up the international Capital Markets. Do you expect to see more of that in 2020. Absolutely. Weve seen the progress with london, shanghai stock tconnects one of the biggest problems, it lacks good institutional investors. So weve seen roller coaster stock markets and they want to have good solid investment and increase the domestic system all right well leave it there thank you very much for joining us on street signs. Were seeing another positive start for european equities today. All of the indices are trading up in positive territory again new record highs for the stock market and also positive session in asia as well. Yet again there is optimism about this phase one trade deal between the u. S. And china seems to drive markets on a daily basis here ftse 100 up about half a percentage point miners are leading the charge up about 40 points. But again, people are focused on the polls in the election on december 12. Xetra dax is up about half a percentage point and there is a warning about the outlook for truck sales in the latter half of the year. But overall the picture is more positive and has picked up speed in the last 20 minutes or so and the ftse mib in italy also seeing a bounce as well. Lets talk about Foreign Exchange and what has been happening some of the currency markets. And here is the sectors first actually talking about the breakdown here up at the top basic resources up 1. 3 as i mentioned, miners having a good performance luxury Household Goods continue to do quite well all eyes on black friday sales and how things transpire there it is a big heavy spending week for consumers all over black friday seems to be coming universal phenomenon banks are having a bit of a rebound today. And on the down side, travel and leisure down about a quarter of a percentage point one name in particular were looking at is lufthansa, that stock is down about a quarter of a percentage point on reports that they are looking to sell their catering business. Lets look at u. S. Futures and see how the u. S. Markets are poised to open up. All seen in the green, new record highs are in the cards as well big day in terms of data you want to watch out for u. S. Durable goods coming up as well as u. S. Spending, personal income and the pce deflator which is what the fed looks at in determining inflation so big things coming up. And the Third Quarter gdp to watch out for as well. And if we look at some of the action yesterday, shares in dollar tree plunged more than 15 after the retailer lowered its Fourth Quarter forecasts but best buy, the shares there surged to a 12 month high after the firm beat expectations for both the top and bottom lines. The big box he rretailer is see positive and the Consumer Electronics retailer posted 11th straight quarter of exceeding expectations and they have an improved outlook for the Holiday Season last quarter best buy was expecting a Broader Consumer spending slowdown as a result of higher prices from tariffs but the consumer has held on data points remain fairly positive and most groups expect growth and the ceo is excited about the Holiday Season i think best buys position, the tariff worry does not seem to be as severe. So i think that were past that. But the key here is you have a very healthy consumer. And that bodes well for best buy. Best buys strong he is categories were appliances, headphones and tablets gaming and home theater were the weakest. Services sales increased 13 over last year service is a great way for best buy to differentiate from online retailers or companies that only sell products. To the extent best buy sells individual services or services attached with products, that is a real differentiator. And best buy is offering free next day delivery without a minimum purchase or membership and it is also adding pickup locations. And Consumer Electronics are a key item and executives said it is ready to compete. Courtney reagan, cnbc. And black friday kicks off a busy Holiday Season. Amazons promise of one day shipping has laid down the challenge to other Logistic Companies and preparations have been going on for months weve been planning on it all year we have added over 42 automated buildings the last two years and we now have the capability to handle more than 800,000 packages an hour more than we could two years ago. So we are ready to take care of our customers needs our next guest forecasts black friday will be worth 4. 3 billion pounds in the uk this year patrick, my sense is that most people get their black friday shopping done online these days rather than going to the Actual Department store or the high street to get it done. What does that mean for companys margins and if you are doing your shopping online is it is posing more of a squeeze on margins . Well, im not sure it makes that much difference it is really about servicing the customer and the customer really has been moving their shopping online but distinctly in the black friday period where that has become much more of online occasion now there was about five years ago quite a lot of door buster deals. We wont see that this year. People arent really bothered to do that, they will stay home and do it online so ttsz a challenge for the retailers to service them. And you say there is a shift to online, so they can Service Higher volumes then . Thats right. Higher volumes and they have to put a lot of preparation of course because a lot of high volumes are going into a condensed period so they have to be able to scale up in terms of coping with the website and logistics, the warehouse, getting that stuff to customers. Next day delivery is a big thing. And there is a consumer advocacy called witch and they looked at 83 products around black friday last year, the six months prior and the six months after and the pricing. And of those 83 products, i was pretty astonished to see only four were actually properly discounted on black friday isnt this just a lot of hype . Well, i think the retailers, they can be quite can any with their promotions a euphemism well, yes, they do like to push the boundaries somewhat but lets not forget that lot of the items, it is a critical time for them to be sell to certain consumers that would still get the discount in a crucial period ahead of christmas the fact that it might as well be the same price in the new year or in the christmas sale, that wouldnt help someone who is doing their Christmas Shopping so there are still bargains to be had but isnt it a bit of pressure on the retailers whether in the high street or online to discount at around this time, a time of year when they dont like to be discounting . So why do they do it that is a very good question and the executives that i speak to, they would cancel black friday in a heartbeat if everybody would. We live in a competitive environment, but they would in a heartbeat because they are selling goods and shooting themselves in the foot we had a managing director of herrods on the show and they dont participate at all do you think that Luxury Companies have more of an ability to decide whether or not they go for the black friday sales in line with everyone else than say the Department Stores who are heavily competing with one another . I think that it is different for a luxury player than a mass market high street retailer. They really have to protect the idea of their prices being high. If they start to cut, it doesnt do well for their brand. Every year when it comes to discounting though, it seems like the sale starts earlier and earlier. Why have companies started doing that knowing that it is not good for the bottom line . They dont even want to be doing black friday so why do they start a week before two reasons really. One is that because of the logistics pressure, it makes sense to elongate that period. But the second, because times have been hard in retail in the uk, they are effectively discounting throughout the year as you pointed on out so they have to do whatever they can to get consumers to spend and spend we will patrick, thank you very much for joining us the House Judiciary Committee in the u. S. Is Holding Hearings next wednesday as the Trump Administration resists a congressional subpoena for a key aide to the president. Alice barr filed this report reporter the impeachment inquiry is moving to its next phase with the House Judiciary Committee taking over and holding its first public hearing next wednesday they have invited President Trump and his lawyers to attend. It comes amid a setback to the president s efforts to keep his top aides from testifying. A federal judge ruling that don mcgahn cant ignore a congressional subpoena the Trump Administration has claimed executive privilege gives mcgahn and other close advisers immunity, but the judge refutes that with the sharp rebuke president s are not kings. There is no constitutional basis for it and frankly, it would create a monarchy if we went down that road. Reporter mcgahn was subpoenaed to testify in the russia investigation and the Justice Department is appealing. That opinion butts up against long standing precedent. Reporter but House Democrats hope the ruling gives them more legal muscle to compel testimony in the impeachment inquiry from officials like john bolton, though his town said today that he doesnt think that the ruling applies to national Security Matters. And while democrats say they are serious about pushing ahead quickly, President Trump poking fun at the impeachment process today as he delivered the traditional thanksgiving poultry pardons to two turkeys known as bread and butter as they have already received subpoenas to appear this adam schiffs basement on thursday. True reporter and it is a deeply divided washington alice barr, nbc news and trump continues to deny allegations that he attempted to bribe ukraine for military aid calling the impeachment allegations a skachl acam and hx so the president of ukraine declared that there was no pressure and he is the only one that matters they dont even know what they are talking about. It is a scam, it is a hoax the ukranian foreign minister stated, and i quote, ambassador sondland did not tell us and certainly did not tell me about a connection between the assistance and the investigations never told him i have never had a direct link between investigations and security assistance. Okay, what that means, you know what that means . It means we did nothing wrong. One of the other big global stories is of course hong kong and city has reopened one of its major transport links, the cross harbor tunnel. It was closed for two weeks because of the antigovernment protests, in addition the week on the siege of the nearby campus it led to several days of violent clashes but officials saying that there are no more demonstrators on their campus. And in a few moments well talk about studios preparing to launch a range of movies well preview the highlights and as well as the latest on the streaming wars my mom washes the dishes. Before she puts them in the dishwasher. So what does the dishwasher do . Cascade platinum does the work for you, prewashing and removing stuckon foods, the first time. Wow, thats clean cascade platinum. This is a story that has you excited. I love the sports segments. Silver lake has bought an almost 10 stake in City Football Group this investment values the company at 4. 8 billion. And that is a record valuation for a sports group and they would need all the help they can get to catch up with liverpool along with the turkey comes the cinema the holiday movie season is upon us with major releases hitting theaters among them is frozen 2 aand the irishman and a Beautiful Day in the neighborhood and also murder mystery knives out. And the Holiday Season is also the battleground in the war between streaming and traditional theaters and were joined by ed martin. Great to have you with us. Just to pick up on the streaming wars, i want your take on disney plus it has been out for two weeks now. Gained i believe 10 million subscribers on the first day, to date 15 million. What do you make of this trajectory disney plus is one of the highest profiled streaming launches possibly since netflix itself what we know about disney plus is that it has an incredibly strong catalog, it has devoted a significant amount of money to making new original shows every year, one of the first being the live action star wars series and disney also has its theme parks, its cruise ships, a big Global Retail network. And it is pushing disney plus throughout all of the consumer touch points the entire corporation is very much getting behind the effort to build a significant streaming business so on that, they are using all of these different channels to promote it, they are relying on the fact that people are getting free trials through their existing services. Were seeing more and more crossover where one provider is offering Something Else through their existing platform. And i wonder as we look at the disney plus and all the new services, what is the actual cost in comparison to those like netflix . Certainly one of our assumptions from between next year and into the mid 2020s is that the cost for each subscr e subscriber will increase what it is as an average at the moment, it is somewhere i dont really want to put a figure on it, but i think that it is very low triple figures. But it depends how you account for it and exactly what you throw into that. One of the key aspects of the upcoming competition is that each of the Major Streaming Services have a major Distribution Deal of some kind with a third party disney plus, Verizon Wireless subscribers get 12 month free access and others are working with tmobile who offered netflix to subscribers. So millions will be delivered by Third Party Distributors but that is not sustainable in the long run. The short run is about gaining market share and lets reference that are these Companies Going to be profitable given the amount of spend that they are spending both on content and on acquisition costs . Again i think one of our observations until 2025 is that all of these companies will be losing tens of billions of dollars collectively we know that hbo max set out a plan where they will spend i think around 24 billion until 2025 on customer acquisition, on content spending, to try to scale a Subscriber Base as quickly as possible. They say that in 2025 they will make a return of 1 billion. So the next four to five years is going to be spend, spend, spend. And then when you get to 2025, we still think that there will be tens of millions behind amazon and netflix so the impetus to spend isnt going away and where are they spending the money . We always see the u. S. Market in this space as the leader but asp penetration increases ad viewing habits outside of the u. S. Changes, that will be an area where they have to decide where to put their money so Global Growth is a critical part of the Growth Strategies for all of these el paso forms so disney has a great narrative because disney is one of the few Companies Whose contents appeals to pretty much all age groups. And it appeals to nonenglish speakers as well this is another challenge that hollywood will have outside of the u. S. , appealing to nonenglish speakers. And when you launch a streaming service, you have to front load your investment to make a Big Marketing push, set up some promotions maybe with a local mobile operator or local Pay Tv Service provider and of course if you really want your business to gain traction in that company, you have to start working with local producers, local talent to start making the kinds of shows that appeal to specifically that audien audience netflix obviously has the first mover advantage, but then any incumbent sorry, new entries into the streaming war, what will serve them well is having an existing contents that they can use and play with like disney you put apple tv, apple plus, obviously they are a new entrant in the space so that again is not sustainable. Would you say for new entries into the streaming war, having an existing content would serve them well as a competitive advantage . Totally agree one of the main reasons why disney bought fox was to get access to foxs historic library. And of course it will make disney plus that much more appealing if you have fox content in there as well warner media and hmptbo, they h a massive content. You mentioned apple tv plus. It launched with a tiny number of shows relative to its competition. Cant really consider it in the same bracket apple tv plus is a supplement to one of the big hitters ed, thank you very much for your thoughts. Certainly something to watch very closely the next couple years. A quick look at the u. S. Futures.
