And the end of the road for jacob zuma the South African outgoing president resigns ahead of a nonconfidence vote saying the anc should to the have forced him out this way make no mistake, no leader should stay beyond the time determined by the people they serve. Good morning airbus shares have taken flight to the top of the stoxx 600 after the Aerospace Giant reported a rise in fullyear operating profit and issued a bullish forecast for 2018. There was, however, a fresh 1. 3 billion euro charge related to its a400m military plane airbus raised its dividend also. Shares in nestle are heading the other direction as earnings disappoint investors shares hit a ten month low as the Company Announced a dividend below expectations lets look at some issues that those numbers have revealed. If we look, we can see the bottom line was mainly hit from an impairment in its Skin Care Business nestle said it will not enew a Shareholder Agreement with loreal adding theres no intention of increasing its stake in the cosmetics firm. The ceo says there is a broad consensus among nestle investors that the company is headed in the right direction despite that pressure from the hedge fund third point. Joumanna bercetche joins us now. I want to ask about growth where is this Company Going to find that growth its been talking about . Exactly thats the Million Dollar question look, if you look at the numbers, you pointed to some things and the fact they di disapointed on the top and bottom line. The company grew at a pace of 2. 9 in the year before, and in the past they had given guidance of growing 3 and 4 so they missed on that point i sat down with the ceo and asked where the growth will come from in the future and what is the strategy all categories contributed to positive growth. When it comes to specific highlights for 2018 and beyond, we expect our growth regions like asia pacific to maintain their strength we expect our growth categories such as water and coffee and infant nutrition to maintain high growth levels or resume high growth levels specifically in the Fourth Quarter we have seen some spots of weakness. Which categories will be less of a focus Going Forward we remain committed to all of our categories its just that the growth categories well manage more specifically for growth, some other categories we manage with a more balanced view towards growth and margin. Geographically speaking you have announced your decision to sell the con ffectionary busine in the u. S. And acquired a latin america organic food aker. Is this a realignment . Not so much weve been deeply committed to the u. S. Market. We keep investing. Most of our acquisition activity last year was based in the u. S theres a lot of capex undergoing there we are bull nish thish in that t but thats no contradiction of investing in latin america and bringing ahealthier organic market there is this the strategy, the high growth areas, nutrition, pet care, bottled water and coffee there is a statement in the Earnings Report about your stake in Loreal Loreal doesnt really fit into any of those categories. What is the plan when it comes to that stake . We announced today the boards decision regarding the shareholders agreement that shareholders agreement between nestle and the bittencourt family is set to expire in 2018, and our board of directors decided not to renew that agreement we dont intend to increase our stake in the company, beyond that we did not make an indication when it comes to future intentions. The ceo of loreal said if you were considering on selling the stake, they would be willing to buy it. Are there any conditions where you would consider selling the stake . I dont think its wise to communicate those issues with the media. Our point was simply to indicate that we do not intend to renew the Shareholder Agreement. But can we assume that once the agreement does expire towards the end of march that perhaps we could hear some decisions . No. All we are announcing is that we dont intend to renew. This is a company under pressure with changing habits. The millennial generation is more Health Conscious, making healthier food choices, moving away from sugary treats, confectionary products, prepackaged food which is what nestle has been associated with in the past. The challenge is to reinvent themselves and drill down into the strategy which will focus on pet care, nutrition, on infant nutrition, on water, on coffee, and moving away from what theyre renowned for as we heard the question is then what happens to the loreal stake. Loreal is a Cosmetics Company they have a 23 stake in that company. They have an agreement with the bitt bittencourt family, where they had agreed not to increase their stake in loreal after the death of mrs. Bittencourt. They said they had no intention to renew the agreement, and today they said they are not looking to increase their stake. People are wondering whether they will hacng on to that stak or sell it they also said they will be looking to sell their gerber Life Insurance arm so it appears they are making steps in terms of realigning their strategy focusing on core businesses and dispose of the business that dont make sense of them. He sounded vague about that loreal stake. Im sure thats his prerogative to do so did he say anything about third point and how activism may have changed their pace of change at the company . Absolutely. Thats very important. Third point has a 1. 3 stake in nestle theyve been vocal about desires to see a quicker pace of change coming from nestle mr. Schneider took on the job last january back in september their Earnings Report they did unveil the new targets. Today they have unveiled their new strategy but really third point has been putting a bit more pressure on them when it comes to the loreal stake. I did ask about that, he said in general the relationship is good they have an open dialogue and most of them are on board with how the strategy is infolding but he needs more time joumanna, thank you were joined by the head of consumers stakes research at lebarren is there anything you have seen or heard from that interview that changes the recommendation for loreal . No. Organic sales growth was more disappointing than expected. The organic sales growth in the Fourth Quarter is 1. 9 only. A slow down in the u. S a slow down in brazil. To real change in top line growth inflection in our view. What do you think they got wrong recently im not sure hes got anything wrong this legacy of category exposures, a latent change that needs to have a more sense of urgency regarding millennials, Health Conscious and higher growth categories. You talked about north america, you talked about brazil which markets, which sectors, which divisions within the company are providing the greatest challenges to top line growth do you think . Clearly in 2017 confectionary in general was a poor grower we saw even with the exclusion of u. S. Confectionary below category average growth in that segment. Also in terms of nutrition, were seeing continued slow growth, even though china is showing better growth for others, such as danone the u. S. Is a drag they had to give back some pricing in brazil as well due to lower milk prices. If you look at the sector as a whole against european equities more broadly, theyre trading at a significant premium. Do you think that will continue . Weve seen a consistent 30 to 40 premium over the last five years from the beginning of this year weve held the view that valuation both in absolute context as well as relative to the European Market would remain constrained. As the tenyear continues to push higher, we think theres no change in that view. We think if anything valuation could come unfurther pressure. Well leave it there. Thank you very much for joining us this morning. Coming up, the likely new head of germanys center left party promises to take a stronger stance against Angela Merkels conservatives what could this mean for germanys plans for a Coalition Government more on that after this break. daniel jacob for every hour that youre idling in your car, youre sending about half a gallon of gasoline up in the air. Welcome back to street signs. Lets look at the stoxx 600 this morning. You can see vaguely positive most of those equities across the continent in positive territory. Looking at specific indices, we can see the ftse 100 is trading up more than a half percent. The dax up 0. 65 the minute is up 0. 80 lets dive into the sectors to see whats going on. Basic resources are up 2. 4 at this stage of the day. Industrials up 1. 67 lets talk about standard Life Aberdeen with shares under pressure under no s news that lloyds bank is pulling a 100 billion pound contact from the company. Shares in Norwegian Air shuttle are trading down the Airline Posted a bigger than expected Fourth Quarter loss saying cash liquidity had dropped. The company was facing pressure to grow coasts the ceo said he was disappointed with the results but the Major Investments made last year will help the company to grow. And shares in relix are trading lower after planning to end its Jewel Company structure. The company says the move will remove complexity and increase transparency those shares are trading down 1. 2 this morning. Moving to politics, the likely new leader of the spd says the party will stand up to chancelar merkels cdu in a new government former labor minister Andrea Nahles said the party needs to reinvent itself. Earlier today annette asked how Coalition Talks with progressing. Im convinced the vote will be in favor. Its a good thing we have an in depth agreement on the Coalition Agreement. What is in the agreement and there is a clear spd footprint in the agreement, but what is more important is that it offers the opportunity for a new european german policy much more responsive to the challenges we are facing in europe we have to stabilize in the first instance the eurozone. In the second instance we have to strengthen the social dimension of europe. And on the 17th of november last year, the head of state decided on the socalled social pillar the pillar of social rights, sorry. We have to bring that into practice people can really make the experience that europe has an added value for their life, for their social life. And here i think germany has to deliver. What is in the Coalition Agreement would be to my opinion a significant step forward austerity was more or less the mantra out of germany for years now. Talking about europe now the spd won over the ministry of finance, very surprisingly in the Coalition Talks. What will a finance minister from the social democrats mean for europe there are huge expectations in the finance minister. Hes coming from the spd because we need to overcome austerity policies in europe a promising aspect of the agreement is that theres a clear commitment for germany to support the juncker plan for strategic investment and not only to improve this investment but also to support it financially to be much more ambitious that we get really in depth modernization process based on investment for the future in infrastructure, in renewable energies, in housing, in social housing. Theres a lot of things to do which could offer people really a good perspective in europe and therefore the next german finance minister has to be much more committed to europe and an entirely different policy than yoo weve experienced over the last decade do you think well get that with a new finance minister from the spd . Im convinced well get that. Still the coalition is ins t insisting on a balanced budget, the black zero as we call it in german how does that fit together, antiausterity, more spending, and still balancing a budget it seems like an impossible triangle it is an impossible triangle. Economically i think its nonsense to stick to a balanced budget under social aspect it is not responsive to the expectations and to the needs we have theres a good description in the Coalition Agreement on investment for the future. We will measure the next government to which extent we will be in position to stimulate those investments and not stick to a balanced budget that was the head of the German Trade Union confederation talking to annette now, for those of i excited about this, i wont apologize at all. Last night marked the deadline for 13f filings with the securities and exchange commission, some large funds have been disclosing their equity position. Berkshire hathaway doubled down on apple and reduced its position in ibm dropping 95 of its holding in the company in the pharmaceutical space, shares in teva shot up in extendedextend extended trading after berkshire announced it was holding nearly 19 million shares. One of the hit hoes there playing along the share price, up almost 3 lobe had a return of 18 netflix stock is up about 40 so far this year. To talk about equities, im joined by my best here why do you think u. S. Stocks went up yesterday after those Inflation Numbers . The reason inflation is up is because growth is up i think the market took its cue from that. Fair enough the markets the last couple of weeks, a lot of ups, a lot of downs, a lot of volatility, was that something waiting to happen because of the low rates weve seen an low volatility over the last year or so . Clearly it was a matter of time the correction people were waiting for. Rates were low, volatility was low, you get Financial Engineering, people doing funny stuff. That got unwoun lad last week. That Financial Engineering means Retail Investors who look at those clever structures have been washed out. It doesnt look to your eyes that Institutional Investors have yet felt some of that pain, does it . No. No rates moved up, people all of a sudden had to unwind positions institutions have not done that much yet, they didnt face the liquidity constraints that retail faced last week when we look at Interest Rates and potential for hikes this year by the fed and elsewhere, is there an argument to be made that what might not be great news for Market Participants is good news for the broader economy . Well, clearly what were seeing its been written about, low rates has kept a lot of Companies Alive which normally would not be in existence anymore. If you have rates going up, that will kind of clean out the system a bit and it would take away overcapacity, which is in essence a good thing for the economy. Would have markets and the economy reacting and basically moving back to normal. Youre predicting zombie firms going bankrupt eventually, yes, if rates rise more than a lot of companies which are relying on cheap finance or staying alive they will be taken out lets talk about the risks from inflation do you see any major risks from inflation . What are those risks the key risk is wages are rising thats only normal if you have a recovery which has been going on for nine years theres a cyclical pressure on inflation. It needs to be seen whether those cyclical forces are as strong to get the bear market going, because there are a lot of Secular Forces keeping a lid on inflation as we just discussed, theres a lot of debt in the system. Rates cant rise that much before you slow the economy. A lot of u. S. Asset managers yesterday were talking about asset reallocation and thi correction being an opportunity to move money out of equities, into equities. When you look at whats going on in the bond market and fixed income, is it time for asset reallocation to fixed income its not time to reallocate to fixed income. If you want to make money in this girnmen meenvironment you e in the equity Market Pricing power for companies is going up this is not the time to be living on fixed income this is the time to add to equities, which is what we have done for kleins s clients in t technical correction could things turn sour quickly, do you think . The bull market in bonds is over i think the jury is out on whether the bear market started. You really have to see inflation picking up before you can make that strong argument thank you very much coming up on the program, jacob zuma stepping down as South African president , thats amid calls from his own party to resign more on zumas tenure and the future of south africas businesses after this break. Welcome back to street signs. Im willem marx. These are your headlines shares in airbus soar as investors focus on the positives. They post higher fullyear profit and issues another bullish forecast despite a charge on the a400m military plane. Not so sweet for nestle. Earnings miss expectations on the top and bottom line as the consumer giant says it has no plans to increase its loreal stake. We announced our board of directors has decided not to renew that agreement we did not increase our stake in the company, but beyond that, we did not make any indication when it comes to future intentions. Standard Life Aberdeen sees red after lloyds and scottish willow ditches a 100 billion pound contract with the asset manager citing competition concerns and the end of the road for jacob zuma the South African president resigns ahead of a no confidence vote saying the anc should not have forced him out this way make no mistake, no leader should stay beyond the time determined by the people they serve. A quick look at the u. S. Futures ahead of the open in new york you can see all three indices there look to have a positive open the dow jones pointing to a 250point open the s p 500 looks to open up 20 points nasdaq looking to open up nearly 60 points. We look at the individual markets here in europe all four indices trading in positive territory the ftse 100 coming back stronger now its up nearly 0. 23 the dax in germany up three quarters of a percent. The cac is up 1 tnt 25 . A and the minute is up 0. 90 . The euro strengthening against the u. S. Dollar by a third of a percent. Cable trading slightly stronger, also a third of a ercent the u. S. Dollar weaker against the yen and the swiss. Lets go back to jacob zuma he stepped down as president of south africa bringing his anyoneyear term anyon nineyear term to an end the anc partys chief whip says Cyril Ramaphosa will be sworn in as the new South African president later on today the rand hit a two and a half year high against the dollar on the back of that news. Jacob zuma said he had been compelled to resign. Take a listen. It is now Public Knowledge that the National Executive committee or the anc resolved to recall me as president of the republic i have also learned that before i respond to the initial decision a new decision has been made by the a nshgs krshgnc whe is that i have now been compelled to resign by way of a motion of no confidence set for tomorrow, february 15, 2018. That was jacob zuma speaking there yesterday. My colleague is in johannesburg this morning i know youve been on zuma resignation watch for quite some time now what happens next . Ive certainly been on this zuma resignation for quite awhile now we had protests calling for president zuma to resign for a number of years now. From capetown to johannesburg they have been calling for his head i dont know if its a break up on valentines day, but it happened yesterday dont judge it by the gloomy skies behind me now. In africa we consider this a blessing, rain is considered a blessing the key question is what happens next we expect the incoming president to be sworn in today, Cyril Ramaphosa, as we heard the chair of the anc in parliament, we hear that Cyril Ramaphosa should be sworn in today as president dont take it lightly. He has a lot of mess to clean up the party has confessed its a corruption riddled party the guptas, the closely linked family with the state and the corruption going on in south africa, the energy corruption, we heard one of the members of the family has been arrested yesterday. So we see it taking place. But theres still a lot that Cyril Ramaphosa has to do to clean up zumas mess well leave it there. Thank you very much for that report this morning and to talk more about this we are joined by William Atwell how much blame can we place at the door of jacob zuma for the economic woes of south africa over the last nine years to be honest a fair amount. Over the course of his tenure south africa really failed to recover after the 2008 2009 global recession this is because of a great deal of policy uncertainty during those years. Hes introdiuced a range of controversial policies, the Mining Charter an example of that which made investors worried about the governments intentions regarding making the Business Environment more minimal to investors lets talk about that and what went wrong. We saw gdp contract in 2016 2017. Why did companies both domestic and International Stop investing in south africa. Its important to put this in perspective. International companies did not stop investing in south Africa Investment slowed down fair point. So we did see a bit of a contraction in 2016 in terms of investment we expect to see a bit of a rebound this year on the back of this positive news you know, key reasons are there are deep structural problems in the economy, which expresident zumas disinterest in any kind of reform meant those problems went unaaddreddressed so massive skill shortage, increases in electricity prices, which is itself tied to pro governance at the state utility company, which all increases costs and the difficulty of doing business for multinationals, certainly it meant they would delay some Big Decisions on south africa. Lets talk about the allegations, things like cronyism what do you make of that raid on the gupta residence yesterday . Is that a harbinger of things to come i i had itthink it is. Mr. Ramaphosa has made cleaning up or draining the swamp is the popular expression at the moment, a key plank of his credibility and of his platform for the anc presidency, and why people are angry at zuma is part of the reason why Cyril Ramaphosa will be taking this forward. Ramaphosa has an eye towards the 2019 yeegeneral election part of the reason he was elected president is to ensure the anc would win. Needs to deliver on this anticorruption message. Want to bring you breaking news here. Weve seen a report from south africas elite police unit saying it issued 13 arrest warrants in relation to influence peddling and has made eight arrests of suspects in that investigation it seems ramaphosas leanup is continuing at pace what in your eyes does he have to do beyond that to restore some Major Industries to health. The Extraction Industry has been in difficulty over the last few years. What can he do to try to resolve the impasse between workers in the state, between some companies and those workers to try and get mining back on track . You are right the Mining Industry in particular has had a difficult time with Commodity Prices being fairly low that hasnt helped either. In the midst of this we had this problem with the Mining Charter where companies essentially dont know what the governments position is. Theres been policy requirement that they hand a certain percentage of ownership stakes to black shareholders, but that threshold moves around depending on what the mining minister says next introducing certainty as to what the governments intentions are is probably the most important thing mr. Ramaphosa can o. When you look at his economic platform, what should business potentially be leery of . I think there are a few areas that are not explicitly business friendly certainly businesses should not see mr. Ramaphosa as a messiah for creating better conditions for them areas like the new minimum wage, which is going to come in around mid year this year, thats going to increase costs for certain visit businesses, like hospitality a range of new taxes will be necessary, probably introduced in the february or march udget depending on when that speech date is finalized. There will be a range of new taxes on v. A. T. , which will have a big impact for consumers well leave it there. Thank you very much for coming in William Atwell from the Frontier Strategy Group moving from africa to u. Com shares in chinas big four banks in the region look poised to continue their rally. Analysts say gains reflect optimism over the Deleveraging Campaign and a steady economic recovery will the momentum last as the government continues efforts to crack down on debt and shadow banking . Shadow banking stood at about 500 billion u. S. Dollars, a lot of that has been pushed towards the mainstream nonperforming loans were 350 billion, which is almost 1. 7 , 1. 8 thats the industry average. Im sure if you dig beneath the surface there will be a bit more buried bodies there. Overall kudos to the actual push that has gone on pboc has done their part so i think its a good buy for all four all four of the major banks but what about the smaller players . Those smaller players are a bit more opaque. Not to say all of them if you look at the top ten banks, the a lot of them will be represented at the Asian Financial services congress. All of them have come up with clean books. So not to say that the smaller lenders have not done their part this deregulation and this cleaning up of the npos cascaded down to all of them. The big four are a good buy. Book to value of 1 you can go up to 3 thats a huge upside if you look at the trading patterns of city or hsbc, compare that to the big four, which are ironically the biggest banks in the world theres so much more upside to them you do think theres more upside at what stage do you say this good news is priced in and its time to take some out . I think the journey has just begun. I think this upward trajectory were forecasting and betting on, i think it can go to 1. 3 to 1. 4 book value so theres a 25 component upside to all four banks if you look at the performance from the time they have come out up until now, theres 7 , 8 gains.
