Clearly a very tough run late last week and early this week for Deutsche Bank down 1. 5 . Turning over seas, north korea in focus today ahead of talks between kim jongun and skrooe a cnbc is live in seoul with the latest sherry. Reporter good morning, seema. So weve got the south korean government sort of hoping to go yongd the winter Olympic Games but given the timing of it all because we only have one month to go till next months winter games, i think tomorrows talks could be quite limited to discussing logistics and security for north korean athletes participation in the giems. The crucial question is what does south korea want and of course what does north korea end of asking for this kind of overture south korea will be leading the south korean delegation in talks tomorrow this is warning that some of the issues of mutual interests such as easing military tensions between the two koreas and the reunion of a separated family could come up in these talks, but of course though its been getting a lot of reaction out of washington, as well, with u. S. President donald trump saying talks are a good thing and he supports them 100 take a listen. Right now theyre talking olympics its a start its a big start if i werent involved, they wouldnt be talking olympics they would be doing no talking or much more serious he knows im not messing around. Im not messing around not even a little bit not even 1 . He understands that. Reporter of course, a crucial question that we need to be asking is is this going to lead to ultimate peace making on the Korean Peninsula or money making for the regime with sanctions left and right. Sherry, thank you very much an important story we continue to watch sticking with news from overseas, President Trumps decision to freeze aid to pa pakistan could be a big win to china. One of his first tweets was on pakistan over the weekend the Foreign Ministry could see a shift pakistan could warm up to other partners including china its a part of chinas buildout that could curtail washingtons efforts. Trying to stop terrorist activities. I couldnt agree more its an important country. President trump has closer ties to india and there are elections to come this year in pakistan which is crucial to watch its one of the fastest populations to grow. Just included into the msdi index. And welcome back to Worldwide Exchange. Lets get a look at u. S. Futures. Last week was a record setting week the dow breaking 25,000. Eyes also on the s p 500 which is less than 250 points away from breaking 3,000. Keep in mind the s p posted its best week since december of 2016 futures indicating a higher open for the dow which is up 32 points in premarket trade. S p 500 is slightly lower, less than one point return to currencies where the dollar is finding broad support at this moment higher against the japanese yen as well as the euro as 1. 19. The pound 1. 35 against the green back oil, that has been a big story we did see a small drop in the number of u. S. Rigs drilling for new production thats something to keep in mind oil trading around threeyear highs. 67. 71. Stories catching our attention ipos, u. S. Debt in stock market listings pool. This is one of the big read sections they do once every couple of weeks. Pretty long sentiment in terms of the state of the ipo market in the u. S it acknowledges last year 189 ipos was better than 2016 but still low. Pointing out in 1999, 2000, there were 500 ipos a year they averaged 200 in the 80s and 90s in terms of companies listed, 7,500, end of 2016 was 3,600 pointing to the fact that a lot of money in the private market uber, spacex, pinterest. Why there are fewer listings at the moment and whether any of these companies could list, too. Its an important story to watch especially as we watch the economies. Ub beers, airbnb will be listed. My pick is in the Washington Post its called will the economy save trump for President Trump, a lot is riding on the economy in 2018. If it continues to do well, it should bolster his popularity and his claim that he understands it better than his critics. But if it slows or drops na a recession it would weaken that claim, perhaps his strongest selling point. Weve seen President Trump face massive criticism, but one thing that has helped him is tax reform thats one reason wall street has stuck by his side. The moment we see a turn in the economy, if that happens the last quarter wasnt that strong if that continues to be a trend wall street wont support him as much. Wasnt that strong of a headline number and a strong day off the back of it, yields rising. Right. In the short term hes still fine with that speaking of politics the fallout continues with the release of a book revealing the inner workings of the white house. Traity pots is live. Hey, wilfred. The Trump Administration is going after this book and its author now one of the key insiders interviewed for the book is apologizing for what he said. Mr. President reporter President Trump speaks to farmers in tennessee today about the economy hoping to turn the page on Michael Wolffs book, fire and fury. Wolff claimed on meet the press that white house insiders are questioning whether the president is mentally fit and whether he should be removed from office. This book is not about my view of donald trump it is about the view of the closest people to him. Reporter President Trump calls it a fake book. Statements like the one mr. Wolff made about how we all think about the president is just ridiculous on its face. Reporter and a Top White House adviser. The author is a garbage author of a garbage book. Reporter some democrats are taking it more seriously. We have a seriously flawed individual in the oval office. Reporter now former chief strategies steve bannon called the president s son trees senous is backing off his agenda is expected to begin with infrastructure and welfare reform and getting a budget in place in just over two weeks also immigration, thats a big issue for democrats, for the president , for republicans here. Democrats are supposed to sit down and talk with President Trump about that at the white house tomorrow wilfred . Tracie, the president meeting with Republican Leaders over the weekend at camp david in part ironing out what might be the next steps in terms of the legislative agenda what have they said specifically over the holiday break and relating to this book . Are they still supporting the president and will this affect what they do next legt taflly . Some are. They talked this weekend, wilfred, but the timing of that. Its reported that the president and the Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell wants to start with welfare reform, some of the things theyre trying to hire now. Bannon is attempting to mend fences, tracie is it potentially a little too late or is there a sense that at some point you could see bannon walking up to the white house to take his meetings with President Trump. Reporter well, wouldnt that be interesting in the white house, out, fired, back at some point anything is possible in this administration President Trump seemed to take sort of a longhanded view of this last week, not necessarily embracing bannon but saying, see, hes changed his tune very quickly so not escalating the situation that seemed to be developing between the two of them. Well be waiting to see what happens there. Tracie potts from washington thank you so much. Girl bands will do. As you should. I do. Lets get you a check on Global Markets right now because it was another recordsetting week on wall street. The best start to the year, in fact, since 1999 the s p 500 gaining 2. 6 led by technology and materials the dow surpassing 25,000 and you see in premarket trade up 36 points for the dow nasdaq higher by 4 and s p slightly lower tenyear note. Rising rates have been the story over the last couple of weeks. We are at 2. 7 having not been able to get above 2. 5. The philippines, a strong week as well japan was up 4 . All of asia is in the green today. Japan leading the charge at 0. 9 europe largely strong markets. Germany up france up as well. Ftse 100 up and it is just positive slight gains across europe we have retail sales this morning out of europe which is strongly expected. 1. 5 on the month, forecast for 1. 3 lets discuss markets. Joining us, director of golden mike ycro at fidelity. Lets start with the international picture. Japan and germany, the rally was Even Stronger than the u. S can that continue this year . We were off to a strong start and thats saying something for 2017 789d sits a tough act to follow but certainly in the opening few weeks of 2018 thats exactly whats happening of course, earnings season is starting pretty much this week the Global Economy is part of that story china and u. S. Tax cuts are part of the story pmi, new orders in the u. S. At 70 was reported last week. So a lot of earnings momentum. The irony is even after five fed hikes, liquidity conditions continue to ease almost to the record easing levels and thats very unusual in a global bank tightening cycle the market continues to be in that sweet spot. Whether that continues remains to be seen but certainly there is a lot of momentum right now. With no hint, you see this rally raging on. Those investors that havent par tis si pay theed in the market, where do you see them . Its interesting. For 2017 u. S. Equity funds and ets, so both active and passive, took in net zero dollars and thats despite a 22 gain. The notion that this is a very frothy meltup, very speculative one i think is completely false. Investors continue to not participate directly to your question, global equities, nonu. S. Equities have a lot of potential here. Emerging markets, europe, japan. Obviously the tech sector has done very well and theres still a lot to be said for that. The cyclical side is still very attractive and maybe a bit under priced if you look at small caps in the u. S. , they should be doing better considering that were getting these tax cuts theyve languished there are still some pockets in the market that have not participated as much as they should have. We set up for a potential of disappointment as we start earnings season this friday. Yes so the estimate for the First Quarter is for 12 year over year growth. For the calendar 2018 its for 15 . Its interesting those estimates usually kind of grind down as we get closer to the quarter or the year, but in this case we have seen the opposite thats because of the tax break. The difference between the estimates for 2018, the dollar estimate last august was about 145 and today its actually 148. So whether those are tough comps, i dont know. The sense on the street is every percentage point decline in the effective Corporate Tax rate is worth about 2 a share for s p earnings the earnings numbers have drifted higher so i think its legitimate were almost two full years into the earnings recovery and to be seeing double digit growth is very impressive. Bringing geo politics into the discussion, north and south korea expected to talk tomorrow. From an investor point of view is that a problem . I think so, but the markets have generally disengaged from the geopolitical, you know, spectacle in terms of not pricing in risk and, therefore, not rewarding the markets when we see the opposite. Its really interesting because the vix is at an alltime low. Its very, very low, 2. 3 , which is well below average. Financial positions are very easy that seems to be driving the markets much more than anything else i think thats why we have seen such low volatility. The analyzed volatility was 3. 9 which is the lowest on record. If you wonder if something happens, the market is not really positioned for it the fundamentals are strong. Thank you for joining us this morning. Hollywood came out last night to celebrate their own at the golden globe awards. It was a night marked by sharp comments about Sexual Harassment our landon dowdy joins us with more on that story landon. The Golden Globes is the first of the major awards shows in the run up to the oscars. Its the first test for how hollywood handles the Sexual Harassment scandal the normally bright red carpet was a sea of black that theme was ever present during the show punctuated by Oprah Winfrey in her acceptance speech for a Lifetime Achievement award. Take a listen. For too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up the time is up the time is up. As for the big winners, three billboards outside epping missouri won three awards. Lady bird was named best comedy. Thank you certainly an historic moment or night in its own right landon, thank you. Lets talk about the night with Chris Witherspoon from fandango. What did you make of the night who were the big winners Francis Mcdermott for three billboards what a great film. Small movie. A lot of people didnt think it was going to do this well. The shape of water was the big frontrunner coming in, seven awards but Frances Mcdermott took out Hawkins James franco who made the wofrs movie ever made, it was a phenomenal movie last night. In terms of this being a precursor or not for the oscars, whats the record of the globes for those big movie awards in recent years as to whether or not they called it right you know, its kind of a grab bag. The Golden Globes is a totally different voting body. The oscar body is a lot bigger this does invigorate interest around the films people watch these films and see the big winner at Golden Globes didnt watch them at the movie theater. Weve seen netflix and amazon steal the spotlight. How did they do this time . The big winner, the marvelous mrs. Myzel this is the show thats getting amazon out there along with a show transparent a few years ago. In terms of the Foreign Press makeup, as you say, i ask this particularly because of gary ulmans success. Does it tend to tilt towards foreign stars and foreign movies or is that not so much a factor . I do believe having a foreign body makeup doesnt help but i have to say, he was the one in my opinion who should have won, gary ulman he was brilliant in the role of winston churchill. The me too movement resona d resonated. I think that that movement was the winner in a lot of ways. The me too movement. The times up. If you play oprah. She gave an amazing acceptance speech this is going to be a big year for women. How about that movement more broadly in terms of your position as a hollywood reporter, do you feel like the tone of it is going to get more positive this year in terms of change Going Forward or is there still a lot of negative and kind of concerning revelations to come out in the industry we were celebrating women and they were making big strides a wrinkle in time, ava dumey is the first africanamerican woman to direct a film with a budget over 100 million. Theyll get their just due in front of the camera. More diversity, i like it. I like it, too. Chris, thank you for joining us Chris Witherspoon of fangango. Off the back of oprahs impressive speech, people getting on the topic of twitter whether she should be running for president. Which would be a big wild card name outside of the role of president. Lets get to stocks on our radar this morning starting with apple. Jana partners and calstrs are upgrading apple to take action to curb the growing smartphone addiction to children. Interesting story. The two investors collectively own 2 billion worth of apple shares they sent alert calling for apple to develop new tools to help parents control and limit smartphone use and study the over use on Mental Health. Turning to farm ma, sell gene h celgene has agreed to buy impact theyll pay 1. 1 billion a month and it will depend on whether impact gets the sales deal for the cancer drug. The belgian biotech rejected a previous buyout earlier. More stocks to watch, nvidia is partnering with volkswagen and uber vw will use the companys drive 9 platform, which includes speeches videos are up another percent this morning hershey and carerra group submitted bids 49er rare ra makes nutella its more willing to be aggressive on price. Lg electronics has quarter 4 profits. Analysts spot high spending. Theyre expanding market share lg down 5. 4 today still ahead on Worldwide Exchange, brad pitts bid that came up short. Plus, trouble for apple and samsung. Why amazons echo could be the next big threat. Stay tuned welcome back market action. Europe is higher across the board. Ftse just dipped into negative territory. Germany up over 3 last week the ftse was near alltime highs and up less than a percent Deutsche Bank dipped 5 on friday, down another percent and a half today this followed the announcement of a full year loss for the year its bigger than expected. Trading is down as well. Deutsch bank down 6 in the past 12 months stories dominating social media this morning other things are getting the buzz landon is back with that. Thats right. Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot finally have winners one lucky winner in New Hampshire taking home the 570 million powerball jackpot. Another single Ticket Holder in florida winning the 459 million megamillion prize. Both winners could get tax breaks because florida and New Hampshire dont have income taxes. Thats a saving of up to 24. 8 million on the Mega Millions and 36. 1 million on the powerball. Buy more holidays in florida and buy my Winning Ticket there. Thats where you should buy your tickets for you and your brother. I forgot to buy one this time. All the next week. Weird that you brought this up that they both won in the same week. Two big games happening in one week and pretty epic. This is also trending looks like the echos popularity could be bad news for apple and samsung. People who use digital and voice use their smart phones in the u. S. , this could spell trouble for apple and samsung who lag behind amazon and google in the digital Voice Assistant space. I got an echo for christmas. I can say that this is based on personal reporting this is true. This is really fascinating. Its an area we havent talked about despite talking about the success of echo. You dont think of it as a competition. Clearly the saving grace is it has to be in the home and phones are with you all day when you are outside of the house its a factor wehavent flagge enough. The general consensus is when we talk about the limited capabilities or functionality of these devices, whether it be the amazon echo or google home clearly there may be some competition in there for the smartphone makers. Its easier heres some game of thrones training brad pitt big money to watch an episode with the bidders he bid 130,000 to watch an episode with amelia clark. He was out bid he started out at 20,000 but in the end the prize went to a gala goer for 160,000. I love it. To watch an episode with her. And Kate Harrington was there. He said during the bidding that he joined as well. Exactly not that i was able to bid this but i understand thats cheap. That would be epic particularly if its the final ever episode. You would pay 160,000 . No, i wouldnt be able to. Dont get me wrong. This is a cheap amount. How much would you pay to watch with i cant even put a tag on it. Its even better. Whats the benefit i think thats such a good organization. Whats the benefit of watching an episode with the actress. You dont want to be interrupted. You dont want to talk. Becky joins us from new york with a look at whats coming up. Hey, becky. Good morning, wolff great to see you guys. Were looking at what to expect. We have the view from the white house this morning Kevin Hassett will be joining us to see what weve seen with the dow and the rest of the markets and what we can expect from the economy this year. What kind of things they are expecting and what will happen with the markets as a result weve all been talking about infrastructure we have the president and ceo of the associated builders and contractors going to come on and talk to us about what could happen if there was an infrastructure bill that got passed and what that would mean if it were funded. Plus, well be talking about business this morning. This week is the Jpmorgan Health care conference. We have the ceo of biogen coming to us from San Francisco all of this coming up in a few minutes. Great stuff we look forward to t. Squawk box coming your way in seven minutes time. Lets get back to markets on Worldwide Exchange. Futures pointing higher slightly for the s p now. Back to fractionally lower dow and nasdaq joining us. Lets touch on the data we got on friday. Was that justified because of the underlying positivity of the data the pac to back gain averaging 250,000, its hard to criticize that performance 2017 we had another strong year for employment gains i can say good news from the standpoint of the markets youre not seeing the kind of wage pressure that could cause the fed to feel that it needed to respond by doing more in terms of interest rates. Getting some job growth accompanied with strong jobs numbers but not enough to get the markets worried that its going to mean more fed tightening than people are expecting. We have the Inflation Numbers due this week. What are you expecting weve got a little firmer core rate reading. It will be lower than what we had seen last month. Last month Energy Prices were up this month theyll reverse we always look at the x food energy number. It will be firmer in december. Still on a yearoveryear basis were holding kind of steady were not making the move up like the fed would like to see its enough to keep the fed hopeful that we are not at least in a situation where inflation is moving lower. We were worried about that early in the year. What are you expecting from the ecb this year. This morning more strong data, the pmis have been very strong we have inflation data that slipped back fractionally. Are we going to get the tightening some people will forecast from the ecb . I suspect so. I think weve already seen the tapering start there i dont think were going to see rate hikes but i think were going to continue to see this path the ecb is on now like the fed where were going to see accommodations being reduced i think thats going to be a theme globally were starting to see if the boj, bank of japan responds. The eurozone is doing well we have the strongest Global Economy than weve had at any point in the cycle somebody said there are fewer economies in recession than in history. The truth is that the level of monetary accommodation that weve seen the last couple of years is no longer warranted thats being removed globally. Any thoughts on gold prices thats not happening. Gold as a general rule has been relatively wellcontained in an environment with easy money, you would have expected that gold would be, you know, moving higher. And so the bottom line is is that i think in general that its consistent with this idea that youll see monetary accommodation being removed. Michelle, great stuff lovely to see you. Michelle girard. Quick check back in on futures 20 seconds to go its been hovering in and around the flat line. Its ending just positive and at iaq higher.
