Shows on a television, computer, tablet or smartphone. Unlimited talk and text up to four phones. 10 gigs of data. Head of marketing tells usa today we want to get out early and make a splash and, john, everybody is wondering what this says about the evolution of the bundle and media as we go forward. This makes no sense. Its like you have a bunch of stuff in your fridge and you just throw it together to make a potpourri for dinner. Why you would possibly need a satellite in this mix makes no sense and, in fact, while youre wait iing for your satellite installation youre able to log into your computer with the app and actually stream and watch television proving you dont need the satellite in the first place. The worth of the satellites when you cant deliver broad band over them is questionable. I dont get it. Maybe they could something with the spectrum down the line. Its an okay deal. Its 50 less than it would ordinarily be but you have to sign up for two years and only the first year has this discount. You get a 25 deal. Of course should mention cnbc is owned by comcast which competes with this combined company but i think the more interesting thing is how simple do they make it to actually watch things on a phone . Tv everywhere gets criticized a lot for having to log into this, log into that. Do they have a solution for that . On the mobile device you can watch but you only have ten gigs of data. Four people in a family are sucking down live tv, that will get burned through. Im surprised you are so skeptical. Listen, theres a large part of the country satellite tv, directv is a huge option. The triple play, i know were not exactly comparing apples to apples, wouldnt this make a lot of sense for households across the country . Its fine. Its just not something brandnew. Everybody has a bundle. Its an interim type solution. Were in the interim period, arent we . Thats fair enough, kelly. If you can deliver the television before you have the satellite why do you need the satellite in the first place . Thats my only argument. I assume over time all of these Wireless Networks will have the capacity to compete with broad band. Most already can. How many current directv subscribers are there . This must be attractive to make that product that is perhaps becoming obsolete. I get it. It definitely looks cheap. It seems you are getting a lot. Its a bridge, right . A bridge to what, though . Where everything is ala cart sne. I dont think were going to get to the point over the Cellular Network you can Stream Live Television without having to think about it because, i mean, 10 gigs, youll burn through that watching live tv in about four days with a family of four. At t doesnt want that because then everybodys service will be degraded. They want you over wifi, watching tv on tv for the most part. Well see. If people do burn through it, theyre going to get huge cell phone bills and theyre not going to be happy. Somebody will be happy but not the customers. Well watch that. The stock is not reacting too much to it. In music, another big name in music criticizing the streaming industry n. A new york sometimes oped, david byrne of the talking heads writes its easy to blame new technologies Like Streaming Services for the drastic reduction but perhaps the biggest problem artists face today is the lack of transparency. I asked apple music to explain the calculations of royalties for the trial period. They said they disclosed that only to copyright owners, that is the labels. Weve reached out to apple for comment and are awaiting a response. He uses sam smith as an example. If he accounts for 5 of total revenue at spotify, spotify is not obligated to pay him exactly that. Thats byrnes complaint. It looks like a racket. And david byrne lays it out am he has the copyrights, has a label, and still couldnt get the straight story from the distributor. The rules that are in place now were in place back when radio and the things that are streaming are based on answ ancillary. Were heading in that direction, so somebodys got to protect the artist. In reading this piece, i thought to myself, welcome. Welcome to my world as well. Anybody who sells content, digital media, you really have no idea how youre getting paid and what youre getting paid. With every major platform, when they calculate the cpms, if you get asked why am i getting this . You get told that, you know, thats not for you to know. Im probably one of the biggest free market people around. If theres any regulation to be done, it is to provide a level of transparency that are putting these and have no idea why were getting what were getting. David byrnes target seems to be not so much apple music as to the big labels saying theyre the ones who are the intermediaries, get the royalties, and theyre not being fair or perhaps passing along as much as they could to the artists themselves. Just the rules of the road. They do whatever. As frustrating as it is in media, it would be different if it were our paychecks that were based on some formula back there. This week you get 5. This is very much an apple thing. Most Media Companies will be hosting their content on apple news. When you ask them what revenue can we expect to get from this, they scratch their heads, oh, gee, i dont know. Its a common theme. Apple is probably one of the most opaque. Youtube is certainly opaque. Well see with facebook. Davids point in the oped, why was it taylor swift raised concerns about apple pay or apple music and not the labels themselves . Why did it take the individual artists and why didnt it come from some of the big labels . Maybe that tells you they didnt have a problem with it or they were capturing the benefit. His argument is there are two levels of confusion. First the level of confusion between the platform and the label and the label has another level in telling the artist what they get. The bifurcation of the artist who is can afford to put up a fight like swift and those who want to feed their families have no choice but to go along. Maybe theyll unionize. Its all the rage in Silicon Valley. We know uber, the ondemand car company, valued at nearly 51 billion according to the journal raising close to a billion dollars in this round. Microsoft joining the list of investors as well. It achieved that level almost two years sooner than facebook. Thats a great chart. The race to 50 billion. These are public companies. They are owned by hedge funds and owned by mutual funds. Thats one of the points the New York Times article makes. They are traded liquidly. To argue they are private companies anymore, the most interesting nugget is microsoft is investing and jon pointed out to me that actually uber sold off a part of their mapping business to microsoft a month ago as well. Microsoft sold off to uber and put 100 employees into uber as well. Maybe theres something more than just putting in a straight investment. A strategic interchange of assets. What could there possibly be . Maybe it could be microsoft makes an investment. They get this capital from uber for getting them, selling them the mapping business. But uber is sort of in a class by itself when it comes to nonpublicly traded companies. I dont know what the valuation means. I dont know how it would translate if tomorrow trading on the new york stock exchange. Thats something we talked about again and again and also uber is sort of the company right now thats not public, that has this huge value because of the amount of money people spend on it. The size of their expansion, the fact theyre dealing so much in the physical world. Im not sure how much this signals about the overall market. Although uber has to be careful it doesnt get trapped into a corner. Its made a lot of promises at 51 billion f. It cant monetize higher than that, it does go public and this puts more pressure to do so. Promises are made. We have to make sure peoples confidence in the service that lawmakers, et cetera, dont suddenly come back against them and remove the air out of this big number. Uber is obviously white hot right now but you have to remember, too, that stock is preferred stock so theres preferences on it and weve seen ratchets where if it doesnt go public at a certain price, private investors get a certain stock. Its questionable whether or not they had to take on any of it. Most certainly this is preferred stock. The common stock would not have. So a straight calling it 51 billion is not accurate. Daily mail making a private investment. Very excited. We as part of an Investment Group bought out tiger beat actually. You are holding tiger beat. This is the september issue. Its a big play for us in Centennial Media and the digital work is the work to make it into a great digital property. Whats attractive about it . Its an iconic brand and it has captured that 13 to 20yearold group that really i havent seen captured by a lot of Media Companies. The other investors were amazing. An Interesting Group of people. Sounds great. Lets do it. Tiger beat is for posters you put on the room. We have the pullout poster in here. Theres a lot of opportunity. Working with snap chat, seeing that 1320yearold group, i think we have that opportunity in media. Tell me you had those. I was aware of the posters. I dont think we were allowed to have some of them. Im going to make a 13yearold very happy with this. Its great seeing you. Jon steinberg. We want to check in on markets. Almost down 100 points. Greece closed down sharply, about 17 . Take a look at apple near 120 a share. Trading around its 200day average of 120. 87. The Company Making headlines with rumors theyll use siri to transcribe messages. Can investors count on siri to boost the stock . Joining us from 30 rock, walter, the fall is often a good time for apple stock right around august september, new iphone coming out. What should we make of where its trading now . Is it just summer slowdown . What . I think theres some concern about whether they can actually grow off that massive december that they had with the launch of the 6 and the 6 plus. Theres a concern whether theres a new opportunity. A trough period before any early indications how many phones theyre going to make and what type of new improvements theyll have in the latest iteration of the product. So given that samsung wasnt selling the galaxy s6 and the galaxy s6 edge at levels expected, others are doing poorly but apples margins have held up. Are we really worried about the iphone again heading into this season especially with u. S. Wireless carriers upgrades plans so popular . Isnt this something people get fooled in to . We get the concern every year and every other year because this concept of, oh, well, the new product will be the s version and it will look exactly like the last one with some minor improvements. Those were the concerns we heard about with the 5s and the 4s before it and they turned out to be massive products. An interesting status as far as the u. S. Market and similar to the rest of the world. 5 of iphone users within the base in the United States are still on legacy products meaning phones before the 6 or the 6 plus. Theres a huge number of people that didnt move forward with the 6 plus and i think whether its the price break on the legacy models thats coming or expected to come or the new products, theres an opportunity to grow those numbers and thats the primary concern in the stock. Thats why the stock has stalled out since last quarter and what the concern is as far as moving forward. Can they grow off that 74. 5 Million Units they sold in the december quarter of last year. What about china, though . It seems investors are watching how poorly apple trades when china concerns are on the front burner. Its not anything that you can ignore but china is a massive market. The iphone has only recently been penetrating to that market. The concerns in the last quarter if you look at the decline in the revenue from china was more moderate this year than it was last year. So its not showing up yet. Does that mean it wont show up when we hit the december quarter . Absolutely not. It will depend on whats occurring in china. Given the popularity of the product, the demand for it and the fact that there are a lot of customers still on legacy products whether its the u. S. Or around the world, i dont think its something that will prevent the company from growing their units. By the way, that is the most important thing if you look at when the stock took its swoon was back in 2013 when there was some upgrade cycle issues and earnings decline. Now we went to we have a massive Earnings Growth of 40 . Its clearly going to moderate next year. But for the stock not to perform, you really have to expect theyre not going to grow earnings. If you believe, as we do, they can grow earnings 8 to 10 in the next fiscal year, the stock should be trading higher. Yeah. To your point right there, looking everybody is talking about the 200 day today, right, because its fighting with it for the second or really the first or second time this year but there was that period you mentioned going into the holiday of 2012 where it fell below the 200 day and it stayed there for months. So is this a repeat that have era . Youre saying is not. Is this a repeat of earnings . I know it was popular to say it was all analysts and expectations were too high and there was an element of that. Talking about the apple tv and other products. The reality is apples products declined which followed that holiday period in 2012. So we dont expect the earnings to decline this year. Why . You look at the u. S. Its still 25 of the sales. Its still an important market. Yes, china is important but the u. S. Is a driving force of apple earnings. What was happening in 2013 all those operators were tightening up the upgrade to protect profitability. Now all the phone payment plans that opens up your ability to upgrade the phone. If youre an at t or verizon customer, youve never had a better opportunity because of the phone payment plans plus theyre not going to charge you any money. Its free up front. So you dont have the same dynamics impacting 2013 impacting what were going to next year. Right, right. And finally, walter, we know apple is an iphone company. The majority of revenue and profit come there. What is the main thing outside of the iphone that could affect sentiment over the next couple of months . Is it any kind of color on the watch . Is it whether they can get more attraction on the mac . What else are you watching . The watch is big enough you get a sense where the revenue will ramp. It is the first new product category under tim cook. The ability for the company to grow goingrd to, theres a lot of different product categories available to them whether its a car within the home with apple tv and whatever iteration that goes. But the watch is almost like your early sign toast of in this first new product category how successful was it, how innovative was it . As you see the revenue ramp, they dont report it explicitly but enough to get a sense of that. Its a litmus test on the investors confidence on whether they can deliver on other additional product as you move forward. Yes, indeed. I hope people arent expecting to see an apple car anytime soon. I doubt its going to pop up and drive out of the garage anytime soon. Walter piecyk, thank you very much. Im hoping, jon. Next up, puerto rico missing a debt payment this weekend. What will the restructuring of the territory look like . Well ask the former governor and then top performers for the month of july and the year so far include netflix and amazon streaming their way to success. Can it continue . Okay. Our thinkorswim Trading Platform aggregates all the options data you need in one place that lets you visualize that information for any options series. Okay, cool. Hang on a second. Puerto rico back on wall streets worry list after a weekend deadline came without the u. S. Commonwealth making key. Joining us here at post nine is a partner with stepko and johnson. These were tough times for puerto rico. Indeed they are. There were two payments due, one was made, the other was not. Actually some of them can be paid and actually there is sufficient liquidity to be met. Others perhaps will need restructuring. My feeling is that they are going after the weakest link, the bonds that were not paid were held mostly on island retail, some Credit Unions and others that may not get organized and have a Legal Defense in place at times, so they may be looking for that to serve as an example to what may happen next. Although that will only exacerbate the island to some extend. We heard your representative suggesting statehood might be the best option at this point. What is your personal feeling about puerto rico becoming a state . Certainly we are american citizens. We serve in every war and have since 1917 with valor and courage and proud of that. Having said that, however, we do not fully participate in every Single Program and we do not that the federal government has. More importantly, the certainty when you invest in one of the 50 states is looking when you invest in a u. S. Territory that most people dont understand fully what is it like even though we have the rule of law and Everything Else and this doesnt help at all. A lot of discussion, the front page piece of the times health care there. Discussion about the future of schools and what should happen to those budgets as debt it restructured. Whats quality of life going to be like . Very tough and actually you were mentioning health care, all the aca rules and regulations apply in puerto rico so medicaid has to be provided for. Contrary to mississippi, the poorest state in the country, 83 is borne by the government. Its a heavy lift for the state government, i would say, and thats one of the disadvantages of the present territorial status. What is the fix long term for puerto rico from your point of view . What kind of investment . How long would it take . Jon, progrowth. The economy has to grow. The underlying issue is underperforming economy with the exception of a period of time of about a year and a half between 2011 and 2012, in the last ten years the economy has been in a recession. So it has to grow. Historically puerto rico had to have a very Strong Manufacturing sector. Tourism makes sense. Youll be down there in less than four hours. So its very easy to access. But puerto rico is not competitive. We look to greece. We see what has happened when labor costs become uncompetitive and Services Wont be dismantled and its heavily reliant on the government to prop up the state. Puerto rico if many of those regards is the same. How can you wind back and make the reforms necessary to make it viable as a territory as a commonwealth on its own . You are hitting it right on the button in the sense we need to make sure we control expenses. We tried and thats the reason im a partner now. It didnt sit well with voters but we slashed 20 of expenses. The cost of money went down. It is not easy and not politically expeditious. Do you think cuba will cannibalize some Tourism Business . Cuba immediately everyone would like to go there once. I bet everyone watching this feels the same way. But the infrastructure is not there yet. We see people doubling down on some of the hotels on that bet. Thank you for joining us. Former puerto rico governor luis fortuna. To simon hobbs. Its a full day of gains in europe as you can see. The stock markets continuing to valley. And if you can see on the right hand at the bottom greece finally reopened today. And, in fact, greece is off its lows. You had a hiatus of five weeks that it was closed for. Its come back currently down 17. It was a tough day for greece to reopen anyway. A lot of the banks were immediately halted, limit down within minutes which means a loss of about 30 . The environment, the economic environment is very challenging. We had fresh pmi data today in greece indicating that its 32. 2. Anything below 50 is a contraction so that Manufacturing Sector is under a huge amount of pressure. The big question for these guys is the degree of the capital shortfall because of all the trauma that was caused by the capital controls and the shutting of the markets and, of course, youre assuming youre going to have a bailin of equity holders and subordinate bondholders. If they do recapitalize, these guys holding this paper are going to take losses which is why look at this. This is cents on the euro of what remains in the greek banks. In general across europe its a rally and the earnings have held that. Heineken is one of the top gainers today after its profit helped by the euro but whats happening in mexico up 88 . These are other reporters or top gainers. Rollsroyce has an active act so theres hope obviously that stock could do better and you see rollsroyce, the engine maker, as a major gainer. China rippling across world markets. A lot of the global miners in negative territory. The pmi data there indicating chinese manufacturing is contracting yet again. Now contracting at its fastest pace in two years. Also since the data. Guys, back to you. Simon, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Over to sue herera with our cnbc news update this hour. Hi, sue. No immediate comment on that from the coalition. More than 9,000 firefighters are battling 21 major fires in drought stricken california. How should investors play this twohorse race this month . On the news line is robert peck, an analyst at suntrust. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Is there a good long short strategy between the two . Both have been phenomenal and key reasons theyve been so strong. For netflix it continues to grow its strong base. For amazon its strong core profitably and its cloud service. Both have had strong fundamentals justifying their movements. Whats the risk for these stocks . Is it the macro environment that might get people nervous or is there a particular piece of news or trind that you see that could turn sentiment on them . The cost of acquiring customers has been going up significantly. Netflix has over 7 billion on content. They are 50 times 2017 so a lot is being baked in there. On amazon continued expansion of aws, their cloud product. I think the risk there would be any sort of pricing pressure that could squeeze that profit. Im not seeing you pick a favorite here, bob. We love both companies. We havent been recommending both stocks to investors because of the valuation parameters. Both of them have long secular winds at their back. While i have you here, bob, twitter came within a penny of a two handle. We have some viewers who are touting their own short facebook long twitter pairs. Would you have a problem with that . Yeah, well, as it came out in the quarter theyre still having a problem turning around ouser growth. Trevor obrien left. As the cfo cautioned, turning around user growth will take considerable time. We would look for the fundamentals to change. Facebook had a fantastic quarter. I think the only reason traded off it was up 25 in the last three months. Very strong fundamentals there. Im assume the naming of a new ceo would not be enough . No. New products being rolled out and resonating with users such as they come back and engage more with the platform. So do we finally agree, bob, on what the fundamentals are . Theres that period of time it seemed like twitter management trying to make it sound user growth traditionally, monthly active users dont so much matter. They got back to talking about growth in a way that i think more people perhaps agree on. Users are at the heart. And then theres the engagement part of it. Are they engaging with the tweets, the products, or not going there that often . That leads to monetization. Thats what will drive the financials going forward. Back to basics. Users and engagement. Fundamentals as defined by facebook, right . Bob, thanks so much. Bob peck over at suntrust talking the big four names. And up next bus drivers in Silicon Valley pushing for more money. Are the big Tech Companies going to play along . First rick santelli, what are you watching today . Reporter well, viewers meet the euro dollar options pit alive and well. And what were discussing, two numbers 1. 65 and 2. 75. Why should they be important to you . Tune in after the break. Coming up at the top of the hour, will it be a late summer swoon or sizzle . U. S. Trust keith banks is our special guest today. Plus, he called for 45 oil last year. Now tom is back with his latest prediction. And the calls of the day that have shares of coors and disney moving. Carl, well see you in about 15. Working a long day. Rick santelli and the santelli exchange. Reporter good morning, carl, i like to go into the technical discussions every now and again because sometimes theyre pretty easy to keep things straight. They dont give you perfect trades but give investors a headsup on very significant levels in the marketplace and while im talking i want you to look at four charts, year to date charts and theyre very important. Ill tell you why. You see 2s there. They settle at 66. Thats where theyre at now. 5s, last year at 165. Theyre a bit under that 152. 10. Thats where were stuck right now. And 30 at 275. Now that youve seen those charts, how good of a headsup they gave us. Now lets first keep in mind, and theres a lot of numbers here, but dont get disturbed by that fact. The 28th and 29th were the twoday fed meeting so everything in this block, if you were a trading a had a position, an extra helping of volatility on fed days when were talking the yield curve. What was the first maturity to go under its settlement . It was five years. What youll find is theres a commonality that the commonality is where the real business is done. The belly of the curve begins where 340es most of the action. Too close to the overnight fed rate. The day is went under 165 was the 23rd. But if you look at the trends whether its two year which on that day if youd have taken a position youd be up four basis points, of course on five year youre up ten basis points. Ten year currently trading 2. 18. Close to ten basis points. 30 year youd be up six basis points. So that is a signal and i would put that as a double asterisk at 1. 65. This is old news. Whats the next one . Lets look forward. Its all about the 30 year. When the 30 year is under 2. 75, sitting on its mark right now and the two year is a good curve hookin whether youre doing the butterfly or the outright curve. When we start to settle under 2. 75, thats my guess when youre going to see the next real big momentum trade and if it hovers there, might be best to take profits if youre already long looking for higher rates. Back to you. All right. Thanks, rick. Bus drivers for a number of big names pushing for more money and Better Benefits but will all the Tech Companies agree to the demands . Josh lipton joins us from San Francisco. Josh . Well, jon, here in San Francisco were used to seeing the big buses rolling through the city. Now those bus drivers want more money. On saturday bus drivers for apple, yahoo and ebay, among others, voted to approve a new wage and benefits package. 160 drivers are employed by compass transportation. Now back in february those drivers voted for representation by the teamsters under this new threeyear contract drivers would be paid 27. 50 an hour as well as overtight and a pension plan among other gains. How are Tech Companies now responding . A statement to cnbc apple says its working with Bus Companies to make changes. Were working with the Bus Companies to make a number of changes for the more than 150 drivers of our commute shuttles including funding a 25 increase in hourly wages, prem number pay for coach and shuttle drivers who work split shifts and improving the driver break and rest areas. By the way, for their part yahoo and ebay declining to comment for the story. If they do not approve the new contract they could expect a big fight. I talked to the principal officer and he tells me that apple, yahoo and ebay will be the target of a teamsters campaign if they dont agree to these new terms. Back to you. Josh, is this situation with the Blue Collar Workers in Silicon Valley just coming to a head now . Weve seen it with the companies, rising rents are pushing a lot of workers just out of the area. Is there some kind of conflict coming . I think youre right, jon, the theme out here the consequences, the how prosperity is affecting different classes of people out here. And how the Tech Companies respond i dont think this is such a financial issue for them but could be a pr issue. Whether its apple, yahoo or ebay, do they want to be seen as coming down on the opposite side of the working class residents of the area. The drivers who are bringing their employees to their plants. John harwood joins us with the very latest from washington. Good morning, john. Reporter donald trump has moved past scott walker, past jeb bush, leading the republican field. Its still the case strategists expect this to be short term phenomenon and hell fade. What will happen next . Some people worry donald trump would run an independent thirdparty candidacy and roadblock chances for winning the campaign in 2016. I sat down with Chris Christie at a diner in keene, new hampshire. He said thats not going to happen. Doesnt your party have a problem . Doesnt ted cruz show theres a problem with team play . Donald trump saying its going to happen because i say its going to happen, isnt there a problem with that . Its a problem for them not the party. Any team ive ever been on there will be moments of discord on the team. What determines whether its successful or not, does the team bond together so that the majority of the team goes in the direction they want to or does the Team Splinter apart . Reporter donald trump could care less for the team. Thats donalds problem not the teams problem. Caller its a problem if he runs as an independent. I dont see the Team Splintering apart. Those are hypotheticals well worry about july of 2016. Reporter you dont see him running as an independent . I dont. What matters to anybody is winning. I dont think anybody can win as an independent. Weve seen that over the course of time. Reporter of course donald trump will have something to say about that. He said in an interview it depend on how the Republican Party treats me. The first debate is this thursday in cleveland. Its the democratic ticket in focus coming out of the weekend.
