Winnipeg city councillor and Speaker of Council Devi Sharma left chambers in tears on Thursday morning.
Sharma (Old Kildonan), an award-winning community advocate and the first woman in Winnipeg history to hold the position of speaker, began to weep after Coun. Kevin Klein (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood) spoke in chambers of the COVID-19 crisis in India.

“Councillor Klein put some very heartfelt remarks on the record about what is happening in India at this moment in time as we all deal with the pandemic and it really punched me in the gut at that moment because of all of those images we’ve been seeing on the news in the last little while,” Sharma said. “It just flooded back into my mind and I was overcome with emotion.”
