Because of the legal restrictions, reporters in Britain cannot disclose details of criminal cases where a suspect has been charged, until the trial is over.
It’s different in America, but here, true-crime documentaries are confined to cold cases, in which the mystery was never solved, or summaries of a police investigation that led to a conviction.
That’s what makes Accused Of Murdering Our Son: The Steven Clark Story (ITV) so unusual. Charles and Doris Clark, both now in their 80s, were arrested last year on suspicion of killing their 23-year-old disabled son.
Despite a four-day search of their house and garden, police have not found a scrap of evidence to indicate the couple, both former police officers, had anything to do with Steven’s 1992 disappearance.
