Standup comedy is booming in China, and Chinese people living around the world are setting up local Mandarin-language comedy clubs as far afield as Tokyo, Madrid and New York. Thousands of miles from Beijing, there are no censors — so comedians censor themselves. While some tell jokes that couldn't be said back home, usually in English, many Mandarin-speaking comedians and fans agree that politics should be strictly off limits in the comedy club.
