A repeal of the Maryland state song is on the agenda this legislative session, and this may be the last year "Maryland, My Maryland" represents the state.
You may have heard it at Preakness in the past and not thought much of it. The song was written during the Civil War, and if you listen to all the verses, you realize the official song of the Free State is an ode to the Confederacy.
"It doesn't sit well with me at all," House Speaker Adrienne Jones said.
Jones, the first female and the first black speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, is on a mission to get rid of the pro-Confederate song that represents the state she helps lead.
