Challenges are mounting for Algeria’s universities
Algeria’s universities face major problems returning to calm. Already deeply shaken since 2019 by continuing popular protest, universities have had to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic with no extra resources. And, while it was thought this year would be calmer than the two previous years, all kinds of new challenges have arrived simultaneously.
At the beginning of February, Algeria’s Minister for Higher Education, Abdelbaki Benziane, appeared confident, even thinking forward into the future.
Setting out his policy to the senate, the minister put forward a road map for his department. This aims to equip universities for present and future challenges.
