Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Boseman’s final onscreen role before his death last August following a private, years-long battle with colon cancer.
In the
George C. Wolfe-directed drama, set in Chicago in 1927, Boseman portrays Levee, a trumpeter with dreams of composing his own music and escaping the background of Ma Rainey’s band.
Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading role. The film also received nominations for makeup and hair styling, costume design and production design.
Boseman recently received a Critics Choice award for Best Actor for his performance in
