Celebrations planned to remember John Glenn on his 100th birthday
Staff Report
Plans are underway for the John Glenn Centennial Celebration, designed to mark the life and legacy of John H. Glenn Jr. July 16-18.
Glenn was born in Guernsey County and raised in Muskingum County. The two communities are collaborating in recognition of what would be his 100th birthday on July 18. He died Dec. 8, 2016, at the age of 95.
Glenn, a graduate of Muskingum College (now University) in New Concord, fought in two wars as a fighter pilot and set a transcontinental speed record as a test pilot.
Then, in 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth as a member of the Mercury 7 program.
