Ballet Ireland revives and tours this contemporary version of Carmen. Based on Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, the original score was reworked by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin in the mid 20th century, to create the Carmen Suite, a series of just 40 minutes. That version has been reworked with arrangements for flamenco guitar by guitarist John Walsh, to create a full-length ballet. The effect is like an archaeological dig, where different timespans of musical ingredients are contained in layers, and the outcome is terrific. Walsh live-plays the guitar, adding richness to the sound and great intimacy.
