The fight was originally planned for May 2020, but one year later, it’s finally set to happen.
Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have agreed to a deal for a super middleweight title unification bout on Cinco De Mayo weekend in the US, sources told The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger. The Mexican celebration falls on a Wednesday this year, so the bout could land on either May 1 or May 8. DAZN will stream the fight worldwide except in Mexico.
Alvarez first will stay busy with a title defense against mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 in Miami. Boxing’s top star is a heavy favorite in that fight, and as long as he wins and emerges without injury, he’ll turn around and meet Saunders in May.
