At that time, Superintendent of Schools Michael Thomas said the district needed time to purchase tents for children to eat outside at lunch and to work out transportation as the district needed to go from 35 to 52 buses and there was a shortage in drivers.
Brockton High School presents different challenges as one of the largest public high schools on the entire East Coast, with over 4,000 students.
State guidelines require a minimum of 3 feet of physical distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, except during lunches, where students must be kept 6 feet apart to allow them to take masks off to eat.
"Brockton High School houses 4,046 students," Thomas said at Tuesday evening's school committee meeting. "Going over the feasibility study, it's going to be very difficult for us to fit all the students coming in at 3 feet apart. Our classrooms for a school this size are small. Our science labs are very tight."
