A child from Virginia is dead after a World War II-era hand grenade believed to be inactive exploded, according to authorities.
The 12-year-old boy was killed on Dec. 23 by a MK2 grenade that was likely purchased at the Fancy Flea Antique Mall in Shallotte, North Carolina, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirms to PEOPLE.

Neither the vendor or the buyer believed the grenade was functioning at the time of sale, authorities said.
