A woman who lives near the scene of Wednesday's deadly standoff in Boone that left five people dead, including two Watauga County Sheriff's Office deputies, said she is heartbroken about what happened in her "tight-knit community."Debbie Warren said she is a family friend of Sgt. Chris Ward, one of the deputies who was killed in the ambush that happened at a home located at 553 Hardaman Circle."I'm a local and he's a local. I've known their family and friends for years," Warren said."(I'm) just very sad, very heartbroken for our community."The suspect, along with his mother, father, were also all found dead during the ordeal. Investigators said Ward and Fox were dispatched to the home located at 9:44 a.m. after the homeowner and his family didn’t report to work or answer telephone calls. The deputies were hit by gunfire after entering the home, and while Ward was “extracted from the scene,” Fox remained inside, investigators said."It's a tight-knit community," Warren said. "We just love our sheriff's department and all their law enforcement. We're just saddened to hear the news, especially when it's one of our locals who's been around for a while."The sheriff’s office said officers from approximately 15 law enforcement agencies surrounded the home. Other people living nearby were evacuated or told to shelter in place as the standoff lasted throughout the day and Wednesday night."I just want to pay my respects to our law enforcement, to our gentlemen who go to these places and try to protect us," Warren said. "Pray for these families. Pray for these officers while they do their jobs."
