Shravan Rathod, one half of the musical duo, died Thursday night at Mumbai’s SL Raheja hospital from Covid-related complications. He died at the age of 66 years.
In 1990, when Hindi film music was in flux and churning out something, Mahesh Bhatt’s Aashiqui awoke a melody-starved nation with gentle tunes that have remained popular to this day. The soundtrack for a sweet romance between a model and a club singer sold 20 million copies, making it the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of all time and solidifying the careers of music composer duo Nadeem-Shravan.
Nadeem-Shravan compositions, which were crooned by Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal, brought melody back into the game. The melody struck a chord with me. Not only with the general public, but also with the most ardent detractors of Hindi film music, though one song was singled out for plagiarism. Saajan (1991), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Sadak (1991), Phool Aur Kaante (1991), Deewana (1992), Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Dilwale (1994), and Raja Hindustani (1996), among others, featured impressive soundtracks.
