In the Police Departments . How come abortion is a common practice of birth Birth Control in the black community . Why dont we treat africanamericans like us . We are all equal and that was his call to arms and this is prescott kane, frequently spent some time with him and me and that was her call to arms. I think it is great that the party that was not the party of segregation, was not the party of slavery, was not the party of the poll tax has its conviction that we are the party of Abraham Lincoln and jack kemp was an exemplar par exelons. David full disclosure, my wife served with you as the assistant secretary of public affairs. Tim scott has really picked up that mantle. As a matter of fact, anything we can do as a people to encourage enterprise and success in the innercity, weve got to , wet. And enterprise zone are going to take neighborhoods, communities that are ravaged and find out why. Do we need to have dramatically better schools . We never did anything about that, quite frankly and regrettably. Does it take forever to get a permit . How about, are the buildings are disintegrating . Why dont we focus about getting business into those communities and labor into those communities to help build them up and hire the people that live in them . Jack was funny. He was of the view that that should be a very significant part of the renaissance of the innercity, but he also wanted to have america is such a broadminded society that if as i as a black person wanted to leave, i could do that and find a job and live someplace else without fear or prejudice and that is the party of lincoln and i think that is the legacy of jack kemp. David we are moments away from President Trump, which we will cut away to when that happens. Did it work . It is an unfinished product, quite truthfully. The schools have not been approved. The worst schools frequently, if not always, always always are in the innercity communities. You have a lot of single parents. If there is a mother and dad present and the schools are educating, then we are fine and that is a thing that governors and mayors need to focus on. It is inexcusable that schools in the inner cities performed so poorly. Like jack said, the difference between rich and poor people, rich people have more money. Those that are down in the dumps, we need to pick them up and have them participate in the American Dream, something he believed in. David governor keating, im going to interrupt you because the president is going to speak. We dont want to miss any of it at all. We will come back to governor keating after we have heard from the president. Lets hear the lead into President Trump. Freeing american hostages. We have six incredible people who were held hostage by various countries and a very pleased to let everybody know that we brought back over 50 hostages from 22 different countries. We worked very hard on it. Ambassador brian and others. We were very proud of the job we did, but i would like to ask maybe pastor brunson to say a few words . We can go through and just give us a little history of what happened and how is life treating you . I was held in turkey for two years. You took unprecedented steps to secure my release and your administration really fought for me. I think i may still be in turkey if you had not done that. They had you there for 28 years . They had you scheduled for a long time to read we had to get you back. To me, president erdogan was very good. I know they had you scheduled for a long time and you were a very innocent person. Fewltimately after we had a conversations, he agreed and we appreciate that and we appreciate the people of turkey and you still appreciate the people of turkey, i understand . We love the turkish people. Pres. Trump great to have you back. Please . Thank you for having me. My name is sam goodwin. I was held in syria for 63 days. I think i speak for my fellow former hostages and detainees when i say im just grateful to be home safely. Thank you for the invitation and opportunity to be here, particularly ambassador obrien was helpful and supportive to my family and i cant say enough nice things about him. Thank you for promoting him and just really happy to be here. Thank you. Pres. Trump we got you back. We got you all back. We have some more we are working on to get back that we better do. Please. My name is mike. It is an honor to be here, in her to meet you in person. What had happened with me as i traveled over to the country of iran. Turns out it was a major trap and i was apprehended. I went through a lot in their injustice system. Iran is in them oppressive oppressive torturous regime. What you did is you were able to get me out of that prison in record time. It was amazing. Pres. Trump thank you very much. Please . Yes, my name is josh. My wife tammy and i, we were held hostage in venezuela for two years. Pres. Trump i know very well. [laughter] you helped us get out. It was a great honor to be able to meet you right when we got back. I remember a lot of people asking, what was it like . I was blown away. Im shaking the hand of the president in the oval office. I dont really remember a whole lot of it, so it is nice to meet you again. It has been great to be back, helping people with situations they have gone through and we have started a family. Pres. Trump the great people of utah really wanted me to do something about the two of you and we were able to do it. A little bit of a miracle, frankly. That was a hostile period and we appreciate everybody working so hard with us. We were able to get you both back. Are you living in utah, i hope . We are still living in utah. Pres. Trump say hello to the folks in utah. Congratulations. Please. Unexpected trip in india. I was not going to india, i was going through to nepal where id been working for the last 18 years. On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for getting us out and getting us home. The darkest moment of our whole time together your letter to my wife came and it really gave for the hope and the peace and from that time forward, as more people got involved, especially the ambassador there in india, things became more peaceful and the hope was there for the last four months. They had planned on keeping me for 35 years. The original charge was 35 years and that was cleared and then they came up with new charges to do seven years. Pres. Trump and india responded very well to my request, so we appreciate that. Thank you all for being with us, we have a few more people that we want to get back and they will be back very soon. Great stories. Appreciate it. David we have been listening to president donald j. Trump in the first of appearances we are told will happen every evening. These people were in in places like syria and turkey and iran. The former governor of oklahoma is with us and our bloomberg contributors. We were talking earlier about these enterprise zones that jack kemp was a real spokesman for and the fact that tim scott, who we will hear from is for opportunity zones. Jeannie jeannie governor, i wanted to ask jeannie governor, i want to ask a question. What do you think the Republican Party to do to bridge the divide . What would you like them to say during this week, for instance to appeal more to africanamericans . The enterprise zones is certainly something that should appeal, but we dont seem to hear enough about it. I think Historical Perspective is important and im really focused on that. Oklahoma, i made the Martin Luther king jr. Holiday a holiday. And im a republican. My view was look, republicans are not the party of slavery, they are, the democrats. We are not the party of the poll tax. Segregation or the ku klux klan. They are. Let us restore our affection and goodwill in your hearts by what we do with you, not for you, but with u. S. Partners. I think that was the king legacy. We are all equal, let us work together. In a city environment and there are a lot of very fragile cities that have a lot of problems. We have seen them blowing up recently. It is important as many of them do to have africanamericans, black city dwellers in Law Enforcement, many of these cities have black leadership, they have black Law Enforcement leadership. That is hugely important. Blue lives matter. At taxid, we also look codes, zoning restrictions. How long does it take you to get a Building Permit . Certainly, the tax laws as a result of the enterprise zone legislation do say to entrepreneurs, come in, participate with us in making this Community Big time significant. I think that is something that we need to do. The most important thing though our schools. Innercity schools as a general rule are terrible. Our innercity schools in oklahoma are not satisfactory. David governor . Hey governor . Hi, governor. This is rick davis. On top of all of these other accolades david gave you, you are one of the smartest political minds i know. Donald trump had a roaring economy going for the better part of three years. Obviously created a lot of in a lot of employment, but then coronavirus comes along and sets all that back, but also the coronavirus effects those communities at a much higher rate than most white, suburban communities that republicans have defended upon in the past to win. How does he then not spend the time to manage the messaging around coronavirus in a way to not lose the potential outreach that he had with the economic benefits of the first three years . Do. Ell, because he has to he has to do it. He has to explain to the inner now as manyed communities because of the coronavirus, the dramatic increase in per capita personal of black americans went up quite a few points. Very impressive during the first several years of President Trump, but if a state has a republican governor and many of them do or an innercity has a republican mayor, then you need to partner with the other party and say, look, the republican doesnt matter, the democrat doesnt matter. What matters is those are assets of our state and city and why dont they produce . How about bringing the black church into talk about marriage as a lifetime contract and you need a husband . You need a wife . Is that preaching . Sure. But that is what preachers do. I think the Unfinished Business quite truthfully is the role of the family, which is essential for success, economic and personal, but also the schools. You cant have wretched schools. I use to tutor kids from Douglas High School in Oklahoma City that could not read and they were seniors in high school. That is completely unacceptable and it needs to be fixed. David got it. Thank you so much for joining us, governor. Frank keating, former governor of the state of oklahoma. We want to bring in our White House Reporter into the conversation as we wait for nikki haley, former u. N. Ambassador to appear at the convention. Set the stage for us from the White House Point of view for this convention. Mario sure. The white house are looking at trying to convey an uplifting message this week. They say they want to show a personalized view of the president that they have not had a chance to see during his time here. Weve gotthis point, a land of promise for tonight. We are going to hear from tim scott, we are going to hear from nikki haley. What do we expect to hear from nikki haley . Mario nikki haley is of course a rising star within the party and she has a lot of name recognition within the Republican Party. I think you will see her also touch on that team of looking forward, being uplifting, a patriotic tone, as well. Jeannie mario, its jeannie. Im wondering what your assessment is in terms of how they are doing reaching out beyond the base . Or is that even what they are aiming for at all . We are hearing mixed reports in terms of if they have an interest in reaching out beyond the base . And if so, how they are doing in that . Mario that is a great question and i heard some of your analysis for i came in. It is absolutely right that the Trump Campaign is going after those that are not traditionally in the republican sense, visavis the africanamerican vote. You saw that on display this evening with vernon jones, the was aer that said he democrat africanamerican and made the case as to why he is voting for President Trump. You also saw herschel walker, the former nfl star, who said he has been a friend of the president for a few decades now. And just saying that some of the labels that have been attached to the president , some of the criticisms lobbed at him, have been painful to mr. Walker. Essentially trying to quell some of that criticism. David many thanks to our Bloomberg White house correspondent, mario parker. We are waiting for nikki haley, former u. N. Ambassador, before that the governor of South Carolina. In thecharismatic figure Republican Party. She is notorious for having been able to stand up to President Trump and yet not be disagreeable or get on his wrong side. She has not taken one shot or even close to a criticism of President Trump throughout. Pivoting toward a more National Security Foreign Relations aspect in the videos we are seeing, that they are playing there. Go ahead. Jeannie im curious to see how does nikki haley, does she talk, is her focus going to solely be on Foreign Policy . Is she going to introduce herself to an American Public who knows her, but does not have a good sense of who she is . David she is coming right now to the podium. Nikki haley. Im nikki haley and it is great to be back at the Republican National convention. I will start with a little story. It is about an American Ambassador to the United Nations and it is about a speech she gave to this convention. She called for the reelection of the republican president she served and she called out his democratic opponent. A former Vice President from a failed administration. Quotembassador said and i democrats always blame America First. The year was 1984, the president was Ronald Reagan and ambassador jean korpatschs words are just as true today. Joe biden and the democrats are still blaming America First. Donald trump has always put America First and he has earned four more years as president. A lifetime tor of serve as the United States ambassador to the United Nations. Now the u. N. Is not for the faint of heart. It is a place where dictators, murderers, and thieves to announce america and then put their hands out and demand that we pay their bills. Well, President Trump put an end to all of that. With his leadership, we did what barack obama and joe biden refused to do. We stood up for america and we stood against our enemies. Biden let north korea threaten america. President trump rejected that weakness and we passed the toughest sanctions on north korea in history. Obama and biden let iran get away with murder and literally sent them a plane full of cash. President trump did the right thing and ripped up the iran nuclear deal. Obama and biden led the United Nations to denounce our friend and ally israel. President trump moved our embassy to jerusalem and when the you and tried to condemn us, i was proud to cast the american veto. This president has a record of strength and success. The former Vice President has a record of weakness and failure. Joe biden is good for iran and isis, great for communist china, and he is a godsend for everyone who wants america to apologize, abstain, and abandon our values. Donald trump takes a different approach. He is tough on china and he took on isis and won and he tells the world what it needs to hear. Is the, the president clear choice on jobs and the economy. He has moved America Forward well joe biden has held america back. Governorwas vp, i was of the great state of South Carolina. Pretty good run. Manufacturers of all kinds flocked to our state from overseas, creating tens of thousands of american jobs. People were referring to South Carolina as the beast of the southeast, which i love. Everything we did happened in spite of joe biden and his old boss. We cut taxes, they raise to them. We slashed red tape, they piled on more mandates and when we brought in good paying jobs, biden and obama sued us. I fought back and they gave up. Administration would be much worse. Last time, joes boss was obama. This time, it would be pelosi, sanders, and the squad. Their vision for america is socialism and we know that socialism has failed everywhere. They want to tell americans how to live, what to think. They want a government takeover of health care. They want to ban fracking and kill millions of jobs. They want massive tax hikes on working families. Joe biden and the socialist left our economy,r for but President Trump is leading a new era of opportunity. Before communist china gave us the coronavirus, we were breaking economic records left and right. The pandemic had set us back, but not for long. President trump rock Gerry Connolly back before and he will bring it back again. Is one more important area where our president is right. He knows that Political Correctness and cancel culture are dangerous and just plain wrong. In much of the Democratic Party, it is now fashionable to say that america is racist. That is alive. America is not a racist country. This is personal for me. Im the proud daughter of indian immigrants. They came to america and settled in a small southern town. My father wore a turban. My mother wore a sari. Awas they brown girl in blackandwhite world. We faced discrimination and hardship, but my parents never gave into grievance and hate. My mom built a successful business. My dad thought taught 30 years at a as a historically black college and the people of South Carolina chose me as their first minority and first female governor. America is a story that is a work in progress. Now is the time to build on that progress and make america even freer, fairer, and better for everyone. That is why it is so tragic to see so much of the Democratic Party turning a blind eye toward riots and rage. The American People know we can do better and of course we value and respect every black life. The black cops who have been shot in the line of duty, they matter. The black Small Business owners who have watched their lifes work go up in flames, they matter. The black kids who have been gunned down on the playground, their lives matter, too. And their lives are being ruined and stolen by the violence on our streets. It does not have to be like this. It was not like this in South Carolina five years ago. Our state came facetoface with people. Intote supremacist walked Mother Emmanuel Church during bible study. 12 africanamericans pulled up a chair and prayed with him for an hour. Then he began to shoot. Tragedy, weorrific did not turn against each other. We came together, blackandwhite, democrat and republican, together we made the hard choices needed to heal and removed a divisive symbol peacefully and respectfully. What happened then should give us hope now. America is not perfect, but the principles we hold dear are perfect. There is one thing ive learned it is that even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in america. It is time to keep that blessing alive for the next generation. This president and this party are committed to that noble task. We seek a nation that rises together, not falls apart in anarchy and anger. We know that the only way to overcome americas challenges is to embrace americas strengths. We are striving to reach a Brighter Future where every child goes to a Worldclass School chosen by their parents, where every family lives in a Safe Community with good jobs, where every entrepreneur has the ability to achieve and inspire come over every believer can worship without fear and every life is protected. Where every girl and boy, every woman and man of every race and religion has the best shot at the best life. In this election, we must choose the only candidate who has and who will continue to deliver on that vision. President trump and Vice President pence have my support and america has our promise. We will build on the progress of our past and unlock the progress of our future, that future starts when the American People reelect president donald trump. Thank you, good night, and may god always bless america. David we have been listening to former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley and we are about to see the president s son, donald trump, jr. , with his remarks as we wait for the transition here. We had nikki haley address questions of Foreign Relations and go well past into domestic things as well. Here comes donald trump, jr. To the podium. Good evening, america. Im donald trump, jr. We are here to talk about the Great American story, to talk about this country we all love, this land of promise and opportunity, of heroes and greatness. Just a few short months ago, we were seeing the American Dream become a reality for more of our citizens than ever before. The greatest prolonged economic expansion in american history, the lowest Unemployment Rate in nearly 50 years, the lowest Unemployment Rates ever for black americans, hispanic americans, women, and pretty much every other demographic group. And then, courtesy of the Chinese Communist party, the virus struck. The president quickly took action and shutdown travel from china. Joe biden and his democrat allies caused my father a racist and a xenophobic for doing it. They put Political Correctness ahead of the safety and security of the American People. Fortunately, as the virus began to spread, the president acted quickly and ensured that ventilators got to hospitals that delivered needed the most. E two sectorsp who needed it most. There is more work to do, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Job gains are outpacing with the socalled experts expected, but biden radical leftwing policies would stop our economic recovery cold. He is already talking about shutting the country down again. It is madness. Democrats claim to be for workers, but they have spent the entire pandemic trying to sneak a tax break for millionaires and democrat states into the covid relief bill. Then they attacked my father for suspending the payroll tax for middleclass workers. In fact, if you think about it, joe bidens entire economic platform seems to be designed to crush the working man and woman. He supported the worst trade deals in the history of the planet. He voted for the nafta nightmare. Down the tubes went our auto industry. He pushed for tpp. Goodbye, manufacturing jobs. The Intelligence Community recently assessed that the Chinese Communist party favors biden. They know he will weaken us economically and on a world stage. David we have been listening to President Trumps son donald trump, jr. Addressing the Republican National convention. We want to bring in our political contributors. Rick, one of the things that struck me about nikki haley, something that is quite different from what we saw with the democrats, it is an inclusion story, but also a positive story as opposed to the country being in trouble and perhaps a future candidate for the president given a prominent role. Rick definitely she got one of the a slots in the first night of the convention and she deserved it. She distinguished herself during the administration and has been a real success story. Not only did she weave in stories about South Carolina, where she served as governor, but also put up a really Strong Defense on sort of the America First philosophy of donald trump in her tenure in the United Nations. No question Barack Obamas presidency was earmarked by a speech in egypt where it looked like he was apologizing for the American Dream of Foreign Policy dominance. Republicans have not forgotten that, and joe biden will wear that shirt for the rest of the selection. David before we heard from ambassador haley, you asked whether she would do Foreign Policy or make a more broad appeal. It sounded rod. I was surprised, in a short time she defended the president and administration, she showcased what they do different from what she thinks a biden team would do and then she moved into her biography. I thought in that sense it was well done. What really struck me was starting out with Ronald Reagan and ending with an optimistic look at the future. I think it really speaks to the fact that this of for her is about a potential 2024, 2028 run. She is an upcoming star of the Republican Party and i think theght she was umbrellaing Trump Administration and seeing a new future for the Republican Party. David right now i want to turn to one of President Trump biggest supporters, former new york city mayor Rudy Giuliani, also a member of the president s personal legal team. He was slated to speak at the Convention Earlier tonight. I asked whether President Trump fulfills his economic promises. The economy until the pandemic was almost flawless, one of our best economies he would argue the best, definitely one of the best. A particular good economy for poor people. The highest number of jobs for africanamericans, highest wages, the most unemployment for africanamerican and hispanics. The idea that his reforms just helped the wealthy was not true, they did the most and a lot more than prior administrations for middleclass, lower middle and poor people. Trademed like, with the deals and everything else, the ys trajectory was straight up. The pandemic hit and we had a massive hit to the economy, but the comeback has been better than expected. The first group of job numbers was supposed to be 8 million lost instead he gained 9. 5 million. Unemployment at 10 or 11 . York, became mayor of new unemployment was 10. 5 . It is a terrible number but not near the depression territory we thought we would be pure he has demonstrated an ability to manus to managers through economic problems and i think thats why he should be rehired. The second thing is we have a world that is relatively at peace, losing far fewer american lives than at any time in the last 8, 10 years. We have definite problems with china and north korea, we have definite problems with iran, but he inherited those, he did not create them. He has not made them worse. Of north in the case korea, at least he set up a discussion channel that was not there before. In the case of china, he has taken action that needed to be taken that have not taken before to straighten out the imbalance in trade. I think its been a strong presidency. I think the major objection to him is personality, not performance. David one of the questions is not just what happened in the first four years, but what would happen in the next four. You pointed to the economic success, i think a fair amount of that was because of a massive tax cut. We could say that is a good idea or bad a guy, do you expect that to be renewed keep the growth going . I actually thought that the propelledecovery was for the tax cuts by the National Regulatory cuts. I think they were more important. I remember campaigning with him for five straight months in 2016 and i was educated in the same way he was. We began thinking tax cuts, like with kennedy and reagan, would be the answer. When we started talking to Business People big and small, they told us we would have we would rather have regulatory relief and tax cuts. Before you get the tax cut through congress, he did his own regulatory reform, which is only about one third done because a lot of them are longterm regulations that have to be dealt with. I dont know that we need another tax cut. I believe he things we do, and he knows more about it than i do. I know one thing we dont need a big tax increase right now. I think joe biden will be talked out of that. Even if he could argue for a tax increase at some point, this is not the time to do it, when our economy, we are doing everything we can to get our economy on a stable footing. You dont pull out trillions of dollars from the private economy. David finally, you said that if you look at the record of donald much, you would not have trouble being reelected. But there are other aspects, how he expresses himself, the tweets. You are close to President Trump and other advisors are very wise who talk to him, surely you must have told him if you tone it down some, you will do better, youre making it harder for yourself. Why doesnt he do that . I worked for president reagan and i remember when he lost the first debate to mondale and misses reagan said let him be ronnie. We are all a series of complexities. I used to get nervous about the tweeting but i now realize that even though every single one of them doesnt work, its a remarkable up remarkable opportunity for him to communicate with his people. Hink im understated understanding this, he is the most beloved by the press, but im not sure he gets a fair interpretation the only way he can overcome that is direct communication. He is probably the president who is directly communicated with the public more than anyone else. I would argue he has opened up a new way for leaders to communicate with their people. David that was Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of new york city. Aboutwhat do you think it, particularly on the tax cut issue . Its fine and good to say the business wants deregulation, im not sure that voters vote on deregulation. Rick its part of a big package on the tax on government itself. When donald trump was running in 2016, it was really a run against washington, the institutions and people inside the beltway. Now he is one of those people. In fact, some of the curiosities coming out is when you look at his platform, which they just renewed from 2016, it sounds like he is attacking his own administration with some of the things he did that are not in the platform or run counter to it. I think the question of what will you do in the next four years because you are now running washington and you have to take ownership of the good things you get credit for and the bad things you will get blamed for, they have not begun to spell out the next four years will look like in this convention. David this is a great point. I heard Chris Christie over the weekend say he has told the president that if he runs the 2016 campaign this time, it will not work because he is the man now so he cannot run against the man. But hes not said what he wants to do different. Jeanne he hasnt and the republicans did not change their platform from 2016. It is the continuation of what he came in on. Chris christie is right he is running as an incumbent when they are concerned about the violence in the cities, he is the president of the United States and he owns that. What i felt was fascinating about Rudy Giuliani is when he said i might not like reading he says but i like his policies, and that is a major method the republicans are trying to get out this week. You dont have to love the tweeting but the policies are strong if you are a traditional republican and you should stay in the fold. David another great point. Is President Trump in the process of changing the system in the sense that it was a question of Approval Ratings and things like that. Saying i dont like what he is doing or saying but i like the policies. Rick you do and you dont, right . When you look at the data, the only thing the American Public currently approves of him that is not a net negative is the economy, and that has reduced almost 15 points since covid. All of the other Indicators Health care, education, trade all of those are to the democrats and if it democratss benefit in polls. I think republicans agree with his policies and you see that in speeches tonight like ricky haley nikki haley, who even though she is an independent thinking person has fully embraced the donald trump Foreign Policy, which she spoke to today. There is one odd circumstance today. This has obviously been a day of torage to the outreach the africanamerican community. All most every speaker has had some component of it. We are about to have the fourth speaker who is africanamerican and yet nobody has mentioned the shooting in kenosha, wisconsin by white officers on a black man that is resulting now in unrest in that city. We cannot ignore what is happening outside the conventional on the days it is happening. Good conventions are relevant to the times we live in. David we are waiting right now for tim scott, the republican senator from South Carolina, to address the convention. He is the last speaker tonight. Iseresting question, there such an emphasis on race and , would start there. Jeanne i think it speaks to that they are trying to reach beyond their base, particularly in swing states and moderate voters. Democrats are not going to jump over to donald trump because of his policies, but moderates and independents may either stay home or go with him. That is what they are hoping for. Clear voters would very much like for africanamericans and latinos to vote for them. To what extent might this also be an appeal to the suburban woman . Rick so far i have heard little to support a suburban outreach program. If you break down, regardless of who the speakers are, it has been pretty doctrinaire republican stuff. I love it and like to hear that kind of thing, but 97 of republicans are already supporting donald trump. Getay increase it by 2 to to 99, but ive not seen the issues they tackle tonight, which is basically been nonexistent, that will be appealing to the white woman suburban voter we lost in 2018. Again, a lack of agenda for the fall campaign, what will you do in the next four years, will leave a lot of questions unanswered for those voters. David we are waiting for tim scott to address the convention. Jeanne, and believe, those voters are critical to donald trump. Jeanne if he does not bring a good number of them over, he cannot win the election. David this is senator tim scott of South Carolina. To all of you tuning in and participating in the political process, god bless you. This isnt how i pictured tonight, but our country is experiencing something none of us envisioned. From the Global Pandemic to the deaths of george floyd and breonna taylor, 2020 has tested our nation in ways we havent seen for decades. Regardless of the challenges presented to us, every four years, americans come together to vote. To share stories of what makes our nation strong and the lessons we have learned that can strengthen it for further generations. Because while the selection is between donald trump and joe biden, it is not solely about donald trump and joe biden. It is about the promise of america, it is about you and me, our challenges and heartbreaks, hopes and dreams, about how we respond when tackling Critical Issues like police reform, when democrats called our work a token effort and walked out of the room during negotiations because they wanted the issue more than they wanted a solution. Do we want a society that reads success or a culture that cancels everything it even slightly disagrees with . I know where i stand because i am living my mothers American Dream. My parents divorced when i was seven years old and we moved in with my grandparents into a two bedroom home with me, my mom and brother sharing a room and one bed. My mom worked 16 hours a day to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. She knew that if we could find the opportunity, bigger things would come. Football i had to use to succeed in life and my focus on academics faded away. My freshman year, i failed out. I failed four subjects, spanish, english, world geography and even civics. Trust me, though, after seven years in the senate, i know im not the only one in congress failed civics. Even while i was failing the ninth grade, my mother always said to me, if you would just shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will be among the stars. Evenever lost faith in me when i lost faith in myself. Because of her encouragement, i went to Summer School and caught up. Next year i met my mentor, a chickfila operator. He saw something in me i could not see in myself and started teaching me valuable life lessons like having a job would be a good thing, but creating jobs even better. Could change my lifestyle but creating a profit could change my community. He planted the seeds of what would become opportunity zones. This initiative that the president and i worked together on is bringing more than 75 billion of private Sector Investment into distressed communities. I took those lessons to heart and started putting the pieces of my life back together. I realized a quality education is the closest thing to magic in america. Thats why i fight to this day for School Choice, to make sure every child in every neighborhood has a quality education. I dont care if it is public, private, charter, virtual or homeschool. When a parent has a choice, their kid has a better chance. And the president has fought alongside me on that. Later in life, i started my own Small Business. Thats why i know it is critical for us to have a tax code that encourages growth. We actually sell revenues to the treasury increase after we lowered taxes in 2017. Rest assured the democrats do not want you to know that. After starting my Small Business and spending some time in local government, i decided to run for congress in 2010. The district is based in charleston, South Carolina, where the civil war started. Against a son of our legendary senator, strom thurmond. You may be asking yourself, how does a poor black kid from a singleparent household run and win in a race crowded with republicans against a thurmond . Because of the evolution of the southern heart. In an overwhelmingly white district, the voters judged me not on the color of my skin but on the content of my character. We live in a world that only wants you to believe in the bad news racially, economically and culturally polarizing news. Alwaysth is our nations been back toward fairness. We are not fully where we want to be but i thank god almighty we are not where we used to be. We are always striving to be better. When we stumble and we will we pick ourselves back up and try again. We dont given to cancel culture or the radical and factually baseless belief that things are worse today than in the 1860s or the 1960s. We have work to do, but i believe in the goodness of america, the promise that all men and all women are created equal. If you are watching tonight, i am betting you do too. Over the past four years, weve made tremendous progress toward that promise. President trump the most inclusive economy ever. 7 million jobs created precovid19, and two thirds of them went to women, africanamericans and hispanics. The first new major effort to tackle poverty in a generation come opportunity zones. Dollarsard earned tax back into peoples pockets by cutting their taxes, especially for singleparent households like the one i grew up in, cutting single mothers taxes 70 . On average. President supported these tax cuts for those single moms and other working families and signed these policies into law, and our nation is better off for it. , them going to ask you American People, not to simply look at what the candidates say, but to look back at what they have done. This election is about your future and it is critical to paint a full picture of the records of donald trump and joe biden. Joe biden said if a black man did not vote for him, he was not truly black. Joe biden said black people are a monolithic community. It was joe biden who said poor kids can be just as smart as white kids. And while his words are one thing, his actions take it to a whole new level. 1994, widen led the charge biden led the charge on a crime bill that put millions of people behind bars. Made the system more fair and just for all americans. Joe biden also failed our nations historic black colleges and universities, heaping blame on them as they fought to ensure our young folks had access to higher education. Once again, to clean up joe bidens mess, President Trump signed into law historically high funding for hbcus as well as a bill to give them permanent funding for the first time ever. And now know biden wants to come for your pocketbook. And less of course you are a blue state millionaire. I am serious. That is one of their solutions for the pandemic. They want to take more money it toour pocket and give manhattan elites and hollywood moguls so they get a tax break. Pastlicans, however, President Trump swanson a generation tax reform bill, lowered taxes for single moms, working families and those in need. When it comes to what joe biden says he will do, look at his actions. Look at his policies. Look at what he already did and didnt do while he has been in washington for 47 years. Gentlemen, people dont always see those failures because they think we are having a policy debate on two sides of an issue. That is not what is happening. Policy, is working on while joe bidens radical democrats are trying to permanently transform what it means to be an american. And no mistake, joe biden culturalrris want a revolution, a fundamentally different america youd if we let them, they will turn our country into a socialist utopia and history has taught us that only leads to pain and misery, especially for hardworking people hoping to rise. Instead, we must focus on the promise of the american journey. I know that journey well. My grandfathers 99th birthday would have been tomorrow. Up, he had across the street if a white person was coming. He suffered the indignity of being forced out of school as a third grader to pick cotton and he never learned to read or write. Yet he lived long enough see his grandson become the first africanamerican to be elected to both United States house and United States senate in the history of this country. Our family went from cotton to congress in one lifetime. Thats why i believe the next American Century can be better than the last. There are millions of families just like mine across this nation full of potential, seeking to live the American Dream. I am here tonight to tell you that supporting the republican ticket gives you the best chance of making that dream a reality. God bless you and father, please continue blessing the United States of america. God bless. David we have been listening to senator tim scott of South Carolina, the final speech of the evening at the Republican National convention. I want to turn to Kevin Cirilli at the white house. A message of inclusion, opportunity and really taking on joe biden on his race record. Kevin it was an optimistic speech from the rising republican star senator tim scott of South Carolina, where he spoke openly about inclusivity, particular making the case that conservative ideology could be a message of compassionate inclusivity. But beyond that and this was something where he spoke on autobiographical terms, on his childhood, his ascent into republican politics, but he also talked about another issue we heard frequently throughout the first night of the virtual Republican National convention, and that was School Choice. I am told by sources on the president s Reelection Campaign that School Choice is something, particular with the backdrop of the pandemic and schools across the country grappling with reopening, is something republic want to draw a contrast on, and it might be, according to their internal polling, a key issue for suburban swing districts. David thank you. Asian markets have been trading through the convention and i understand they are reacting but not necessarily to what donald trump junior said. Return to Sophie Kamaruddin in hong kong. Thate the message is u. S. China tensions are not likely to be escalated ahead of the november election. We are seeing this play out in the currency markets. Lets check in on the offshore yuan on the back of washington, d. C. Saying progress is being seen on the interim trade deal with china. Still proving a tough barrier to crack. Checking in on a broader moves , airlines is soaring on the chinese mainland. In china falling after a takeover deal was scrapped in australia. Hong kong stocks edging lower led by tech after hitting a five month high. We will learn whether the government will extend social distancing measures after they confronted the first coronavirus reinfection. Korean assets also rising despite infection concerns and south korea. Just to wrap up with one more chart on the terminal. We are seeing stocks going higher and we have concerns around complacency, playing out still, the Global Benchmark closer to clinching a fresh all 30le 30 dave day vol has returned to prepandemic levels. David thank you, sophie. We come back to rick davis and jeanne. What did you take away from the convention that surprised you . Jeanne nothing tonight weve seen a couple of the rising stars in the Republican Party, and it is a diverse picture and that is something the republican marty party wants to pain. Tim scott gave a good speech. He was personal, also tough. I think it is telling that he and nikki haley described the democrats and joe biden as a socialist, i think that something we will hear. Im not sure the republicans were as positive and optimistic overall as they said they would be, that there are still three nights left. They could get more positive. Tonight was a night with young, rising stars and a look forward to 2024 and 2028 potentially. David rick, i dont know exactly how the republicans could have a National Convention without you there. Its been a long time since you have not been there. Rick i dont even know where thereis good its nice is. It is nice to meet you from washington, d. C. I think they revved up their base, manner from heaven for republicans, and that is what donald trump likes to do. This convention will reflect his interest and for the last three or four years has been to keep his base happy. The tone was more subdued against democrats than i thought they would have been. If you look at how Michelle Obama came out on the first night throwing one punch after another at donald trump, i think biden got off easy tonight. I think the messages were more culture based than policy and we can see that happening. You looked at the comments about cancel culture and social issues that are existing, judicial issues. I think these are things you will see stable in the fall campaign. David its interesting, looking at the hardest hitting things said about joe biden came from an president s son, not as not from nikki haley or tim scott. Jeanne i dont think we are surprised by that. He has a very, very tough tone on twitter. He gave a good speech at the 2016 convention and i think tonight defending his father and potentially thinking about his own future, he was tough on joe biden. I think we will see more of that over the next few nights. David i think if we have it right now, some of the sound that donald trump, jr. Has we dont have it yet, sorry. Rick, what do we expect tomorrow . Rick i think tomorrow will be a little more substance, we think. As the convention gets into the tuesday session you will not be burdened by things like the rollcall we had today. Things to watch, where will donald trump show up again . He had three different appearances in the first night of the convention, the first day of the convention. What is he going to do tomorrow . We know that Melania Trump will address the convention. That is always good theater. On the theater side, i thought the republicans did a nice job and how they managed the convention, running on time, the hall they chosen washington to broach to broadcast was effective. I think that both parties have done a pretty good job of applying their own style points to the convention virtuality pew david virtuality. David there was a lot of talk about they didnt have a lot of time to plan, we did not see much evidence of that. Jeanne they have to be happy with how it went, and tomorrow, mike pompeo potentially from democrats which many say is a violation of the hatch act. It will be fascinating. [laughter] david it will be interesting, to hear about how President Trump established normalize relations between israel and the uae. Rick thats right, nothing like an incumbency and if you get a good story like peace in the middle east, you want
