They will have a full report, secret service, will have a full report. Do i seem rattled . Its unfortunate this is the world, but the world has always been a dangerous place. Not something that is unique. The world has been you look back over the centuries, the world has been a dangerous place, very dangerous place. It will continue, i gues,s, for a period of time. Do you think differently about your personal safety inside the white house . Pres. Trump no, i feel very safe with the secret service. They are the best of the best. They are highly trained. I dont know if anybody got to walk outside, but there were a lot of terrific looking people ready to go if something was necessary. People at the highest level of Law Enforcement. There is nobody like these people. They just wanted me to step aside for a little while just to make sure everything was cleared outside. It was right in this area. Thaty did you decide after to come back and continue the briefing . Pres. Trump i didnt think about not coming back. They said i had to wait a little while. I waited a little while in the oval office area. I said can i get back now . They said yes. They have a lot of fortification outside just in case. It was one person. You said the shooting was outside. How far away . Pres. Trump they will be given you a full briefing in a little while. I can only tell you they will give you a briefing. We have new jobs arising and unemployment is falling faster haidi the previously disrupted press conference, talking about how well the markets are doing at the moment. But the president had earlier begun his press conference, come into the room and was then removed or told to leave by secret service before returning. He has given some details about the incident that apparently took place outside the white house premises, saying there was a shooting outside the white house premises. That he was taken back to the oval office by secret service and security. His understanding is there was a shooting that was undertaken by Law Enforcement with one suspect shot. Pointing out what was one suspect, not multiple. Saying someone was taken to the hospital, does not know the condition. There will be more details to come. A little bit of drama this morning at the white house. The entire white house had been under lockdown as this situation with this one person that was shot by security and Law Enforcement being taken to hospital. We will get you more details on that developing story as they become available. Lets get to our top story where china is now retaliating against sanctions imposed by the u. S. Over hong kong. With now counter sanctions of its own. Beijing says it will sanction 11 americans, with no direct member of the Trump Administration. Lets let get the latest with stephen who joins us with the latest. What do we know and how does this seem like a high level, symbolic rather than substantive response from beijing . Stephen yeah, a little bit of drama as well on the u. S. China relationship this week. The latest news on the sanctions, what we got last friday was the u. S. Putting sanctions on 11 chinese officials and hong kong officials, including the chief executive carrie lam as well as the Police Commissioner and others, including the head of the hong kong and Macau Affairs office out of the state council in beijing. That over what the United States says is the oppression of Political Rights of hong kong. Now china has retaliated with unspecified sanctions of its own on 11 american officials. As you said, not anyone directly tied to the cabinet of donald trump. These are mostly republican congressman, including three senators, marco rubio, ted cruz and tom cotton, plus a republican representative, pat toomey, as well as kenneth roth. Roth was denied entry to hong kong back in january when he tried to come here. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson saying this is in response to the sanctions on 11 americans to the wrong behaviors of the United States who in his estimation behaved badly on the Hong Kong Related issues. However, they did not get into specifics on when these sanctions would entail. The sanctions that the United States imposed on the 11 chinese and hong kong officials including the freezing of Bank Accounts as well as any potential assets that those officials might have in the United States. We are already hearing from people close to the matter that some banks in hong kong, including citibank, starting to step up scrutiny of Bank Accounts in hong kong. Anotherf course, flashpoint in u. S. China relations as the visit to taiwan this week of the u. S. Health secretary alex azar. What came out of that . Stephen yeah, that again is another flashpoint. Beijing reiterating its opposition to this visit by alex azar to taipei, especially meeting with the president yesterday. Azar really hailing the democracy shown in taiwan as well as the fight against the coronavirus. Taiwan has been fairly successful relatively speaking against other countries around the world in combating the pandemic. Anx azar said taiwan is inspiration to the region and the world. He was speaking mostly about the democracy that has taken hold in taiwan. Aboutat length as well the u. S. Relationship with taiwan, saying it is highly regrettable that china has stopped taiwan from participating in the World Health Assembly at this time of a Global Pandemic. As i mentioned at the top, the visit has drawn the ire of beijing, calling the taiwan issue the most important and sensitive issue in u. S. China relations. You can imagine how beijing feels about the visit by a zar. The highest ranking official to visit taiwan and more than four decades. Shery Stephen Engle with the latest. We will have more on the tensions between washington and beijing with Stephanie Siegel later this hour. Ahead, live in d. C. To get the latest on the Security Breach at the white house. President trump says the shooting outside the white house is now under control as he explains this the reason for the u. S. Economy not growing at a 20 pace in the third quarter, saying hes looking at cuts for Capital Gains tax, middle income tax as well. This is bloomberg. Karina you are watching daybreak australia. Global coronavirus cases are about to top 20 million u. S. U. S. Infections above 5 million although the rate of increasing is slowing. Countries are tightening travel to stem the pandemic. Three months jail for anyone refusing to comply. Greece is requiring travelers to supply a negative test. Hong kong has reported 67 new local of coronavirus, a third of which said to be of unknown origin. 48e city has a total of 41 confirmed cases of covid cases. The government of lebanon has resigned after last weeks devastating explosion in beirut. The cabinet quit amid rising public anger for the blast which is now responsible for at least 200 deaths and destruction of a large part of the city. The Prime Minister says it is the biggest disaster in recent lebanese history and blames corrupt political elites for sabotaging his administration. Powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries. Im karina mitchell. This is bloomberg. Shery President Trump has resumed his press briefing after a possible security incident at the white house. Happening right now, President Trump speaking about the economy and other pressing issues. Joining us now for the latest is bloombergs government reporter Jimmy Wilkins Emily Wilkins. The only thing we heard is the shooting happened outside the white house, it is now under control. What else do we know at this point . Emily at this point, we are learning about things as they come in. From what we understand, the president was taken away from the briefing room. He returned after nine minutes. He thanked the secret service, saying they did quick work. The suspect, according to President Trump, had been taken to the hospital. The suspect was shot. It sounds like he was perntially armed, with the president told reporters. This happen all outside of the white house, but fairly close to where the white house fence begin. In terms of what we are seeing between the china and the u. S. , the level of tensions being ratcheted up as we have see a symbolic response from beijing. Where are we at in terms of going ahead to this review of the phase one trade deal that is meant to take place in the latter half of this week . Risingthere have been tensions between the u. S. And china for months now. We have seen this titfortat between washington and beijing. It is very important for both countries. There are a lot of people, if think about President Trump and his supporters. Have a lot of farmers, bluecollar workers, a lot of people who have relied on trump to foster this good trading deal with other countries. It is something that is important but there has been tensions between the u. S. And china. Be a peaksort of v. A between the two of them. [indiscernible] emily, what about the stimulus talks . Because they are ongoing on capitol hill. There is a stalemate, but the president right now saying they are cuts for Capital Gains tax as well as middle income tax that he is looking into. What can we expect on that front . Will he further try to, basically, really go around congress when it comes to the power of the purse . Emily sure. We saw President Trump this we can go ahead and address a number of executive orders. Giving a supplemental 400 to those who are currently on unemployment insurance, pausing student loan payments. There is a question as to what the president can and cannot do. If he wants to spend money, that money needs to be allocated from congress. We are going to see how his executive orders play out. Theres already some potential they wont be fully executed because they are going to rely on state for some funding and states are saying, hey, we dont have the money. The other aspect is trump is still indicating he is willing to make of the with the democrats. There are still attempts of negotiations with the two sides are still pretty far apart. There has not been a lot of progress in the last couple of weeks. A big question mark as to whether anything can get past at this point. Haidi Emily Wilkins in washington with the latest on the stimulus negotiations, as we continue to hear from President Trump speaking at the white house. Coming up next, we will get the Market Outlook amid all the uncertainty with Wells Fargo Asset Management senior manager margaret patel. This is bloomberg. Shery markets around the world continue to rebound but hasnt happened too fast . If you look at this chart, the total market cap of equities have equal the total dollar value of the World Economy which some say it is a sign of overheated markets. Joining us to discuss this Wells Fargo Asset Management senior manager margie patel. Always nice having you with us. Concerns we are overextended right now, but can you really not get into the equity markets when you have the fed and governments around the world supporting not only economies, but also risk assets . Margie i think thats what this chart is really saying if you look at other points in this chart, we had actually been at that same ratio where Global Markets were equal to gdp before. Extremely above historic levels. What is different now is the very low Interest Rates that exist. Its suggesting dont leave an investor with many places to turn. If you look at the 10 year u. S. Treasury at the end of december of 2019, that was 1. 92 . Today, it is. 58 . We have a huge change in relative value. The dividend yield with the Standard Poors is 1. 8. That is really triple the yield of the 10 year treasury. On those measures, it does not look overvalued. Shery what do you do on a day like today when you have the big tech giants falling, but at the same time, some investors continue to bid small claap and cyclical stocks . The you follow this trend that tech stocks look overextended . Margie i think today is a great example of what we have seen for the past few months which is there are lots of shortterm little price moves by segments that look a little undervalued or overvalued. Today, we have those sectors, industrials, the commodity related names, the financial names move up quite a bit. Not because, of any news but a little bit of shortterm, meaningless rotation. I think strength will come back to the tech stocks as we get into the fall of the year. Much substantial impact to uc from the chinau. S. Lines we keep getting . Particularly the focus on tech. Margie even though we had a lot of uncertainty about the relationship between china and the u. S. , as well as the concerns about covid where the amount of covid cases continues to rise all around the world. In the u. S. , more than a doubling of covid cases in the last two months. In the face of that, weve had the Standard Poors index really be increased over the last few months. In other words, it says the market is not very worried about those things in regards to transitory, the underlying Earnings Growth and Economic Growth as we work our way through the covid crisis over the next few months. That, right, and part of i guess lack of opacity over where we see the economy going, we are seeing some uncertainty brewing in the treasury market. Is a selloff in the longer end an inevitability even if we get the announcement of more bond buying and more qe . Is there an argument to making a short position across the 20 year, for example . Margie i think we had a little bounce up in yields and i think it is natural just as a shortterm reaction for these extremely low rates. It is very hard for me to see where rates can go on the upside when the fed has promised and guaranteed to flood the system with the quiddity to keep rates as close to zero as they can possibly do. I think it would be a risky strategy to short treasuries because i think the trend is for stability or lower levels. Shery we continue to see pressure on the u. S. Dollar as well. How does that impact your portfolio . Margie it has and we have certainly seen that in how well some of the industrial names have done. They look like over the short term, it is a change in positive sentiment. I think youve had a big move in the dollar. I think again, that is the shortterm correction. We will see the dollar bounce back. Why . Because the underlying u. S. Growth is improving gradually, but on a sustainable path. I think that will bring back strength to the dollar. Alwaysall right, margie, appreciate your time. Wells fargo senior Portfolio Management margie patel. We are getting breaking news when it comes to stock trading in sydney. Sydney airports undertake a 2 billion australian equity raising process. The airport has been one of the hardest hit stocks and companies as a result of not just the broader pandemic shut down and the implications to the economy as well as the closure of borders, but hardest hit with the Domestic Travel market taking a halt with that shut down, renewed lockdown in melbourne. We are hearing city airports undertaking the 2 billion aussie equity raising. Versus the profit of 199. 8 million year on year. We saw good numbers in the First Quarter of the year as the pandemic situation worsened. We saw volumes in terms of passengers dive almost 100 . Sydney airports is being priced share and hinting that may be job cuts to come. Job guarantees will not be extended until the end of september. Capital project spending will be further cut as well. No distribution expected to be declared for 2020, shery. Shery lets check out futures are trading across asia. We are seeing a little bit of a mixed picture at the moment. Nikkei futures unchanged as japan comes back from mountain day holiday. Japanese yen Holding Steady at the moment, still at the weakest level in more than two weeks. We are getting japan june numbers. This surplus widened in june. Watch out for those numbers. The kospi gained for six consecutive sessions, the longest winning streak. Futures pointing higher. The asx 200 at the moment unchanged. Kiwi stocks looking unchanged at the moment. We are headed tomorrow to the rbnz policy decision. Coming up, we will discuss escalating chinau. S. Tensions with csis. This is bloomberg. Haidi it is 8 30 a. M. In sydney, 8 30 a. M. In melbourne where the city remains under strict lockdown. We are waiting the daily coronavirus numbers and briefing. We should be getting those numbers of the next hour from the department of health. Of fatalitiesorts yet. We are getting further suggestions of how this is playing out for individual impacted companies. Sydney airport announced they would be raising 2 billion australian in a new Equity Capital raising process to get through the coronavirus crisis, as the travel restrictions both domestic and International Eliminate almost their entire business. We are seeing the aussie dollar softer at the moment. The aussie seeing a bit more of a rally as the concerns about the chinau. S. Trade tensions, tech war weighing on risk appetite. Let of the first word news with karina mitchell. Karina very good morning. China hitting back at u. S. Tensions on Hong Kong Related officials but stopping short of targeting people close to the white house. Senators marco rubio and ted cruz, with beijing saying they have behaved badly on hong kong issues. It is not clear what the sanctions would actually meet. Chinas actions were seen as mostly symbolic and to retaliate against washingtons recent moves. 10 people are known to have been arrested in hong kong under chinas new National Security law, including the former Founding Member of the citys prodemocracy group. Police say she and others were involved in operations that breached the new regulations with one detained for using funds from overseas Bank Accounts to support their antigovernment. China has denounced the highest decades as to washington turns up the heat on beijing. The Health Secretary alex azar saluted taiwanese democracy and its handling of the coronavirus pandemic in a trip that is drawing sharp criticism from china. Beijing says taiwan is the most a born issue in chinau. S. Relations. Global news 20 hours a day on air and on bloomberg quicktake, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts. Im karina mitchell. This is bloomberg. Haidi lets get some more insight on the latest measures from beijing to sanction the u. S. With csis senior fellow stephanie segal. I find it very interesting that so far, we have seen highly symbolic, very public kind of announcements and counter sanctions that these are not really impactful in terms of not really addressing any direct member of the white house and the current administration. At what point do you start to see more severity in the actions that are being taken . China is i think already measured in terms of how it is responding and being careful not to escalate in areas where it does not absolutely see the need to escalate. In contrast of that, i think we do know there are certain redlines that china is not willing to back away from that have to do with its perception of its own sovereignty. So if it can kind of toe the line on those issues and not risk further escalation by responding via sanctions, the sanctions that dont have a real its calculation is the best way to go. Side, is thisu. S. Also calculated from the Trump Administration . There is the view that he wants the phase i trade deal to so go ahead. He wants the economic good news story to continue through november. Is that also very targeted and what is being said and what is being done from the washington side . Washingtonsll, actually throwing a lot at china right now. There has been a slew of activity, including as you mentioned, this meeting that will check it on the status of the trade one stage one trade deal that is really just a small piece of the overall activity that washington is throwing at china, including moves related to tiktok and other social media applications, including some measures that actually have to do with Chinese Companies that are listed in the United States. I think china is probably figuring out what the endgame is an what the overall strategy is that the u. S. Is trying to pursue when it comes to china. Shery are you expecting anymore u. S. Tariffs on chinese goods the or the election . Stephanie i think when it comes to tariffs and going back to your question about the stage i trade deal, i think anything that would put even additional pressure on the economic relationship is not clear why that would be advantageous to the u. S. Side that this point. I would put tariffs in that action thatan necessarily would not have a clear benefit. I am not anticipating there would be additional tariffs but i do think some of these actions and more assertive actions are intended to demonstrate taking this tough line when it comes to china. Shery what is the economic fallout three the United States even how important the economy is for the president . How big is the economic fallout from his latest action, including the banning of tiktok, wechat and most importantly, keeping huawei from doing business in the United States . Theres a reason these providers like huawei is cheaper. This will come at a cost. I think there is a time and consistency here. With the cost that would be realized there are some of these actions are going to the borne out over the medium term. From takingl gains a tougher light on china right now is a much shorter term in nature. I agree with you that there is an Economic Cost to this but i think it is something that ends up being manifested over time and you see that deteriorate in the open investment environment in the u. S. I think we will not see that in the near term. What is your view is beijings goal with the actions we are seeing in hong kong right now . Think when we think and itsinas goal actions for the u. S. , i would separate the Economic Issues from what are issues that i more strategic. I would put hong kong in the second category. I think on the economic side, china is trying to maintain as much as it can the status quo. I think it enjoyed a relationship where it had more or less free access to the u. S. Market and necessarily have to reciprocate that access. It is trying to maintain as much as it can that relationship. Hong kong, i think it is a different story. Live as goal is i i alluded to before, wanting to underscore its view of the one china principle. Responding to the u. S. Including the u. S. Challenging that, i think the goal is to double down and it will not cede any ground. Shery stephanie segal, thank you for joining us. Lets go back to the press conference by President Trump. He is talking about china saying the u. S. Has already responded in many ways. Pres. Trump im saying to myself, gee, china wants us to lose very badly. You know who else is not happy with us winning . Rissussia. The fake news stories about russia. It was just reported the numbers. I raised 400 billion extra in nato. To 400m 130 billion billion in a year in order to strengthen up nato. We became the Biggest Energy exporter. If you look at what we have, we are energy independent. Our military is shorter than it ever was. We spent 2. 5 trillion on our military. I exposed the terrible deal between germany and russia on the pipeline. No one even knew about the pipeline, nor extreme. Nobody talks about it. I said what is this all about . We protect germany from russia. Germany pays russia billions of dollars a year for energy and it is a big portion of germanys energy. If i was a german citizen, i would not be happy with that deal because they are at a very big disadvantage. Russia would not be happy. I can tell you that china would not be happy at all. We have taken in tens of billions of dollars ahead of the treasury, right . Tens of billions of dollars from china. We never took 10 cents from china. 28 billion we gave to our farmers because they were targeted by china. They were actually targeted. We gave 28 billion, compliments of china, to our great farmers and ranchers because they were unfairly targeted by china in order to make a better deal with us. I said we are not going to do that. We are going to tariffs you at very high numbers, 10 . Numbers that can go up a lot. We had a lot of money left over. After giving the 28 billion to the farmers and ranchers and others, frankly, weve had many billions of dollars left over and we are still receiving that money. Even though the we made the deal, we are still receiving that money. If we win the election, we will have deals with a lot of countries. They are just waiting to see who wins because they are hoping, they are hoping joe biden wins. Sleepy joe. If he wins, you know whats going to happen . China will own us. Our markets will crash. The 401 k s will go down to practically nothing. Stocks will go down to probably nothing. Stocks, these big companies, they are owned by millions of people that are carpenters, policemen, farmers and lots of other people. Benefit by ones that having a good stock market, probably more than anyone else. The 401 k s, the stocks, the economy will be in shambles. They want to raise taxes, they want to triple taxes. They want to raise all taxes. Ultimately, they cannot pay for what they want to do anyway. What they will do is destroy your health care and so many other things. We will have 180 Million People that are so happy with her private health care, they are going to lose it under these crazy plans. You will have a crash like youve never seen before. I have been very good shery you have been listening to President Trump talking about china saying he does not know if he wants to make a deal with china. The u. S. Views china differently than it did eight months ago, saying that chinas latest dream is for joe biden to win the election. Plenty more to come on daybreak australia. This is bloomberg. Haidi lets get straight to the markets. Sophie kamaruddin, what are you watching . Sophie when it comes to things to watch, we will see if the reopening rotation we saw on wall street will materialize in asia to see cyclicals and values shine, especially in light of some upside surprises we have seen an ecodata. Today, we will see if gdp contracted less than first expected in the second quarter. Plus, we will get a pulse check on korean exports. The shift into value has not quite stepped yet with asian value stocks still underperforming growth as they have done so over the past 10 years amid the low rate environment to switching up the chart, tencent has had a rough patch, losing 66 billion over two days with chinas tech sector in the crosshairs. That has dragged heavily on the hang seng on monday amid a rising risk premium due in part to politics. The hang seng has been trading at the cheapest level to the 1999 on a index since td basis for most of 2020. Any potential action from the u. S. Beyond tech, that would weigh more on the hang seng that has been tracking lower since entering the market in early july. Amid the titfortat, chinese assets has stayed relatively resilient going into august. China exposed stocks have outperformed global peers since mid may with the mainland reopening in dollar weakness providing support. We are seeing outflows from chinese equities that as investors shift out of e. M. Stocks etfs into bond funds for high yield. Shery Sophie Kamaruddin the latest on the markets. A new report is challenging the view that young people are much less susceptible to the coronavirus. Data shows the number of infected children jumped by 40 in the second half of last month. Lets bring it our Health Care Reporter michelle cortes. President trump giving in a press conference and insisting children do not get the virus as easily or as seriously. Michelle right. We are getting reports from scientists and doctors who have been following this and are treating our kids. They found, in fact, now that we are starting to look more closely at children and testing rates are increasing, we are finding they are are. In the second half of july, the number rose by more than 40 . The idea that it does not infect kids and they wont bring it home to their families, that is not correct. Haidi so, in terms of the vaccine race, we continue to see optimism from various authorities. Are we looking at a timeline, even if we do get Regulatory Approval towards the end of this year, early next year, it will be well into 2021 before at least americans can get that shot. Michelle yes. To design ande test and get approval for a vaccine, that is just the very beginning of any kind of a need to get it to americans. We have the entire Distribution Process that has become. We need the production. Of course, getting into the places where the virus itself is spreading the most rapidly and where the places are happening, that is something that will happen first. So, the number of americans who get it, the average person, someone who is not a particularly highrisk, not innate nursing home, not caring for patients, it will be at least mid 2021 or later before anyone gets that vaccine. Haidi and what does that mean for herd immunity, right . Michelle cortez with the latest on the vaccine race. Still to come, new zealand, rbnz will have to wait a better the next exit economy against the backdrop of global risks and the potential for rising unemployment. We get a preview of that decision next. This is bloomberg. Haidi the bank of new zealand faces a tough decision at its policy meeting tomorrow, balancing a rebounding domestic economy versus a less than surging global picture. Paul allen joins us. Weve had 100 days without community transmission, it is regarded as a very successful outcome of the strict lockdown. The economy is doing well so how does the rbnz react this week . Paul that is a tough call, isnt it . It is even a tough call by the 90 economists surveyed by bloomberg. Six of them see the Stimulus Program Holding Steady at 40 billion a year, 60 billion aussie dollars. New zealand has had a lot of success with the virus under control more than 100 days with no community transition. Life is pretty much back to normal. Even unemployment declined down to 4 thanks to the job subsidy which has predicted spending as well, but the job Subsidy Program is due to end next month and the Unemployment Rate is going to rise. Some economists see a picking up by 10 at the end of the year. With the border still closed, no tourists, no international ners. Nts, big foreign ear senior economist sees that being increased by the rbnz tomorrow. She says this recession is just moreng started and aggressive monetary response. Shery new zealand is looking at opening up the borders for some quarantine for International Travel but a very limited first step, isnt it . Paul the most baby of baby steps. Look again maybe opening up quarantine free travel to the cook islands, which is a very beautiful archipelago. 3000 meters out into the pacific ocean. It has barely 20,000 residents and all of those residents are new zealand citizens. Such a tiny market but it is a symbolic first step. The move will obviously benefit the cooks economy than the new zealand economy but there are other changes going on as well. New zealand citizens coming back to the country now will have to pay their own charges for quarantine which is upwards of 3000 for a single person. There will be exemptions in some cases of hardship, but some important changes underway for the border of new zealand. We will have to wait and see what the next few months brings. Shery paul allen us from sydney. We have an alert on the bloomberg. We are getting the first reaction from beijing on those u. K. Comments criticizing the arrest of the media tycoon. Those comments irresponsible. U. K. As we heard from the Prime Minister Boris Johnson that they are deeply concerned by the arrest. It has received international support.
