Slavery had been abolished, two years after the emancipation proclamation. Meantime, President Trump ready for a planned rally saturday in oklahoma, where 100,000 protesters are scheduled to gather in oklahoma. Protesterstipolice ahead of the president is first rally in months. Meantime, big tech in the spotlight amid scrutiny at home and abroad and charges with the eu. Joining us now is the leader of u. S. Antitrust efforts against microsoft back in the day. Gary, thanks for joining us. Lets start without strong you believe the eu case against amazon is. Gary pretty strong, based on everything we read. The eu is going to charge with amazon with misusing data it gets from merchants on its site. Think, is going to claim amazon uses that data to help amazon make copycat products that compete against the very merchants they are supposed to be supporting. The press has done great analytical reporting, and it appears that exactly the cake that is exactly the case, based on interviews with former amazon employees. It seems on the facts, it is a clear case. On the law though, it may be different. Emily amazon is denying the charges. How good is the amazon counterargument . Some ofazon is denying the charges. About a year ago, emily, and executivecutive an setting sworn testimony before a congressional committee, that amazon wasnt doing any of this. But then the wall street journal and other publications found amazon was. So it is hard to evaluate amazon denials in light of that. Amazon says they are investigating what is going on in their own company, basically. Emily the u. S. Is looking into big tech, including amazon. How much of what is happening in the eu will affect the course the u. S. Government is going to take . Gary it is going to have some publicityt from a point of view more than anything else. In thetandards they use e. U. , emily, are different than the ones used here. And basically, legal standards in the eu make it much easier to bring charges against a company like amazon, and other platform kindsers, for doing the of things amazon is alleged to be doing here. In the United States, we have rather convoluted legal rules for antitrust. Those favor big defendants that can make the case difficult and draw it out. It is less likely you will see these kinds of actions in the United States. U. S. meantime, the government is also looking at facebook, google, apple, and not just the u. S. Government, but various states. The house antitrust committee, we will speak with the chair of that committee, david cicilline, later this hour. How much of a case does the u. S. Have against Tech Companies . And are they so vast and sprawling that we cant consider the private anymore, more like Public Utilities now . Gary they are bigger than things we have camped at have encountered in the past in antitrust, all although although the standard oil antitrust case was close. A goodmittee has done job of investigating these issues and keeping them front and center, but the committee cant bring charges, it is important to understand that. Thesemmittee can air issues and mixture and make sure antitrust enforcers understand them, but the executive branch or the ftc has to actually bring the cases. Emily do you believe there is an antitrust case here, and is there one company that is more egregious to the other more egregious than the others . Has beengle investigated, i think, the longest and hardest. And chances are google would have been sued the United States government, but for political influence. At least that is what a number of big newspapers said during the obama administration. So the case, depending on how it is brought, might be strongest. In terms of amazon, that is interesting as well, not just because of the retail platform, but because amazon does comparable things in the cloud with aws. And that is something to really keep an eye on. That has enormous consequences for the future of commerce in the United States. Are questions remaining about whether the ceos of these companies will testify. According to our reporting, zuckerberg andrk another ceo agreed to testify if others testify as well. It sounds the same with jeff anys, but apple hasnt made promises about whether tim cook would testify. Do they have a choice . They technically, yes, have a choice. For the most part though, appear before executive committees because of all the fallout if they dont. It took jeff bezos a while to agree, and he has a particular problem because of sworn testimony by one of his executives a year ago, which didnt turn out to be accurate. The apple situation might be different, although there are all kinds of rumors the eu is investigating apple for its behavior with respect to apps providers. It will be an interesting hearing if it goes forward, and i assume it will. What as a result of this, is the likelihood big tech is actually broken up . We are in the middle of a pandemic, and for all the criticism of these companies, they have been critical that keeping us connected during this difficult time, not just a health crisis, but economic and social crises. How likely is it that the end result is that these companies are actually broken up . Gary you are certainly right that the Big Companies have tried to position themselves in this time like general ford like General Motors and ford did during world war ii, going to bat for the american public, helping us. But of course, over time, there are a lot of problems with these Big Companies. If they are broken up, it is not going to happen overnight, it is not going to happen when the pandemic is going on. There are a lot of things that could abuse their market position that dont go all the way to being broken up. But if somebody is going to be broken up, the spotlight would be aimed on google first, chances are. Emily gary reback of carr and who led the effort against microsoft back in the 1990s. We will be back with more bloomberg technology, after this quick break. This is bloomberg. A Fireworks Company is launching a covid19 Pandemic Response program to create capacity for largescale testing. A Biotech Company that specializes in genetic engineering is rolling out an initiative called concentric that will provide services for businesses and educational organization. Joining us now is the ceo of ginkgo bio works, jason kelly. Thank you for joining us. Tell us about the program. Jason emily, can you say that one more time . Howy tele so tell us concentric is going to work . Idea ishe key workplaces and schools trying to reopen in the midst of an active pandemic in the United States. What they are trying to figure prevent outbreaks in the community of people im responsible for . Things like ppe, social distancing in the office, but the other thing is regular testing to identify, if an outbreak is starting, you can isolate into people stay home before it spreads to a workplace or school. That is the idea behind concentric. It is to start offering more widespread screening attesting to the community, as we all live with this disease. Emily how do you imagine regular testing is going to work . Is it something employees and students are going to have to go through every day before they go into school are going to the office . N jason it wont be every day. The problem was that we needed a lot of clinical diagnostics in the first, acute phase of the pandemic, when you had doctors making decisions about people and whether they had covid or not. At we built up about 300 about 300,000 tests here in the United States in the past three or four months. And now, we need much lighter weight testing. Ideally, it would be a nurseadministered swab, it would be something you do yourself either through your mouth or nose and it would be collected at your workplace, you wouldnt have to go anywhere, and depending on how acute the outbreak in your area, you would do it once every week or two depending. Ed you could actually model that, we have done epidemiological modeling to know, but that would be a good idea. Emily what has been the interest from companies and schools so far . There is still so much uncertainty and many of them dont know how often they are going to have to do this, and for how long. Jason yeah, it is really hard. A ton of interest, but people are confused about this, i think rightly. Because the last time we dealt with a pandemic at the scale that we closed on the Global Economy was in 1918, 100 years ago. So of course we dont have the infrastructure built to do this well. So we are seeing a lot of interest among schools, especially those trying to open, but also major employers. It is partially a work safety issue, emily, and it is also business continuity. A company had to shut down 6 of poulter production, tyson, in the u. S. Ford had to shut down its assembly plant. Businesses that want to stay open in the middle of this will need some regular testing to do it. Emily you have partnered with other bostonbased i o Tech Companies, including modernity, a covid19 vaccine candidate. How is the development of the vaccine going so far . Jason im excited in general about all these nucleic acid vaccines, a new type of rna to that uses dna or quickly to bring Clinical Trials to prove that works. In a pandemic, it is really valuable. The challenge with vaccines is, we are hoping to have them at the end of the year and they have to work, give them to Healthy People and then you have to make a lot of them. We are hoping for the end of the year, but it could go longer. That is exciting about largescale testing, in advance of the vaccine, if you have enough screening, you could essentially beat this before you have a vaccine. You would need to go from 400,000 clinical tests a day to something closer to 5 million or 10 million of these lowercost screenings. But if he did that, you could get rid of this and get back to normal in advance of a vaccine. Uphink with congress coming on a stimulus bill, i bet they put a lot of effort in that direction, for that reason. Emily and yet there is so much about the disease we still dont know. I know scientists are working together in unprecedented ways, but how likely do you think it is we have a vaccine before the end of the year . Jason the end of the year would be by far the fastest anyone has ever done this. We should cross our fingers for it, but plan for next summer, in my view. We are seeing a resurgence of the disease in various states and countries, new waves in places that havent been hit for. How concerned are you about the resurgence of covid night teen or fourvid19, three waves over the next couple of years . Jason extremely concerned. Here is the thing people are missing. Of leaves and bed a bunch of fires pop up, and some countries put them out quickly. We didnt. We put some of them out. But even countries that have them out, they are still sitting on a dry bed of leaves. And as soon as there is a little fire, youve got to have a Fire Department to put that out. At this goes for every country, not just the u. S. Where we have more operate. More outbreaks. You need huge amounts of testing or, how are you going to control this thing . It is as hard because biological problem of a scale we havent faced in 100 years, but the better we are at admitting the scope of the problem, the better we are at getting ahead of it. In the United States, we could achieve it if we have the will, screening and tracing and isolation, and if we had that, it wouldnt even need a vaccine, or it would be less important. It can be done. Emily and good to hear the work you are doing on testing, jason kelly, ceo of ginkgo bio works, thank you. Jason thank you. Emily turning to juneteenth, companies and people across the country are commemorating today like never before, giving employees a company holiday, asking them to spend time educating themselves and reflecting on the long history of racism in this country. One of the companies is uber. Today i spoke to tony west, one of the most senior black executives in this country, chief legal officer at uber, although he worked at pepsi and in the department of justice. Listen to our conversation from today. Been experiencing it like most others, and that is , going from the shock and outrage at what we saw happen to usrge floyd, and for many of who are black, it is a familiar out rage because we have seen this play out so many times before. You move from that to seeing the great activism and energy of people out in the streets, and a diverse crowd at that. You see a diversity in the throngs of Peaceful Protesters that you havent seen before in other protests around black lives matter. And what you see is Incredible Energy from all sectors, not just in the halls of policymaking, but also from huge energy tech, around how we make sure we begin to finally grapple with issues of racial inequality while promoting Racial Justice . So for me, this is a really important moment. It is a really important moment ch topportunity for te lead. It is important we take the energy and urgency and dynamism of this moment, and we channel it into longterm commitment that will result in longterm, systemic change. That is the challenge right now. Emily i am curious what your experience has been, bling the most senior black executive in the room, often the only in the room, except he especially going from the department of justice, where your boss was barack obama, and in silicon valley, where we know there are few black investors and entrepreneurs. Jason it is not that unique experience for me to often be the only black person in the room, or around a decisionmaking table. My experience at the department of justice, working alongside eric holder, working for president obama, that was an aberration in my professional life. Usually, the room didnt look like that. And my experience is very typical of so many people of color, black and brown people of color, or so many women who find themselves as the only one in the room. They become the exemplar. And you carry a lot of that with you, you carry a lot of that burden with you. You are very mindful of what you are saying and what you are doing and how you are acting. It can be used by people to frankly, make judgments about others that they dont know. So you carry a love that with you. Is, whenost important individuals have the opportunity to be in positions where they have an impact, where they cannot truly make a difference, that they take that opportunity and exercise that the agency to do just that. It has been a very high priority to make sure wherever i am, particularly if i am in a position of leadership, to bring my values diversifying the workplace to that position. Thes something i did at department of justice, something i did at pepsico something i am legalat uber, building a team, pride and ethics team, security team, that reflects the great diversity of our country. Emily no secret it has been a tough time for cooper in the midst of a pandemic, laying off a significant number of people. How do you manage diversity issues in a crisis . it becomes even more important. You have to make sure that as you are restructuring, and you have to downsize, that you are paying attention to diversity and inclusion, just as you kate attention to it as you are building up. The other thing i will say is this. Diverse teams are stronger teams. We know this. The research is clear. They make better decisions, they bring perspectives into the room that are very important, they can lead to more financially that, sful firms we know others have done the study, so the data is there. And we also find they contribute to a stronger culture, so when companies go through difficult times, like ours did, like so many have as a result of the covid crisis, the strength of our culture really becomes incredibly important. I believe the fact we have had divers voices around these tables and in the organization has made us stronger from a cultural standpoint and helped us withstand the difficulties we are facing now. It as you go through restructuring it downsize, you have to Pay Attention to diversity and inclusion, just as you do when you are growing. With so many issues policing happened on the road, and given ubers scale, uber is interacting with police as well. As any of the recent developments made you rethink ubers relationship with the police . Some protesters call for defunding the police. A unique andnjoy special relationship with Law Enforcement, where we have been able to help Law Enforcement ,esolve crimes like kidnappings breakup Human Trafficking or sex trafficking rings involving weeding and girls, that we want to build on that kind of relationship. But we are very mindful about we have data, when we go through a Legal Process and make sure that as we are sharing data, we are doing so in a way that does not reinforce some of the institutional, systemic racism that has too often infected the culture of Law Enforcement. When people talk about defunding what i have heard as the most common definition of that is looking at how we are making our communities safer, and making sure we are putting funds into those things that make our communities safer. I have spent nearly half of my career in Law Enforcement, as a prosecutor, at senior levels of the department of justice as well, and i have always believed make communities safer, you cant arrest or incarcerate your way to a safer community. That takes a much more holistic investment in things that actually create strength in communities, things like economic security, things like educational security. It is an important conversation for us to be having about Law Enforcement, what our priorities are, and how we get it right. Emily uber chief legal officer tony west. Tech considers him one of its biggest threats, chair of the house subcommittee, representative representative cicilline, is next. This is bloomberg. [ sigh ] not gonna happen. Thats it. Im calling kohler about their walkin bath. My name is ken. How may i help you . Hi, im calling about kohlers walkin bath. Excellent happy to help. Huh . Hold one moment please. [ finger snaps ] hmm. The kohler walkin bath features an extrawide opening and a low stepin at three inches, which is 25 to 60 lower than some leading competitors. And its made by kohler americas leading plumbing brand. We need this bath. Yes. Yes you do. A kohler walkin bath provides independence with peace of mind. Ask about saving up to 1500 on your installation. Emily welcome back to bloomberg technology. Im emily chang. Our next guest has quickly built a reputation proposing tough questions the big tech. David cicilline has called Apple Store Thieves highway robbery and has taken social media to task on misinformation. He has repeatedly compelled testimony from jeff bezos and is the chair of the house subcommittee on antitrust, spearheading an investigation into big tech. The congressman joins us now from rhode island. Thank you so much for joining us. Talk to us about the latest where do things stand right now . Rep. Cicilline our investigations began about a year ago and we are now entering the final phase. Weve had six hearings, roundtables, reviewing lots of documents. Planning now for the final hearings and we are set to hear from the ceo and conclude the investigation with a written report about findings with the marketplaces and recommendations. Emily lets talk about the ceos and their willingness to testify. As we understand it, facebook, google, amazon have all said therir ceos are willing to testify but only in a joint hearing with each other. Apple has made no promises about tim cook. Where do things stand right now . Saidcicilline i throughout this investigation, it is really impossible to imagine completing this investigation without hearing from the decisionmakers in these companies because their decisions and the judgments they make are important to hear the perspective. We have lots of questions. I expect we will hear from all four ceos you mentioned. Three of them agreed. I expect mr. Cook would as well. They have pledged their cooperation with the agreement from the beginning. There are questions that need to be asked to these individuals and they have a perspective to share. This is the first major antitrust investigation and the congress of the u. S. Has engaged in in about 50 years. This is an important investigation with important implications for the marketplace and american consumer. We certainly expect all of the ceos will continue to cooperate with this investigation and appear before the subcommittee to testify. Emily to clarify, having agreed to testify, but only if the others testify in a joint session . Rep. Cicilline i think they have all expressed their willingness to appear for the Committee Without subpoenas with the exception of mr. Cook who has left it open. My expectation is all of them will appear in the end because they have Important Information which is necessary to the committees investigation. We made very clear in that letter we communicated that we wanted answers as to whether or not they would appear voluntarily. If not, the committee is used to prepared to use a process. This is an important investigation and the congress has the right to collect evidence and hear from witnesses that are necessary to make appropriate judgments in completing this investigation and preparing a report for the committee and the American People. Emily so, lets say apple does not agree that tim cook will testify. Is that something you would subpoena him to do . Rep. Cicilline yes, we are going to get the documents and the witnesses we need to complete the investigation. It is my hope that will happen voluntarily. But it has always been the intention of the committee that if it does not happen voluntary, we will rely on the compulsion process. It should not get to that, i hope it does not because there is no reason, unless the ceos have summing to hide, that they wouldnt appear. I would not expect that, but i have made it clear. This has been a very bipartisan effort, bipartisan consensus we need to complete this investigation to the end and collect whatever testimony and evidence we need to complete it properly. That is why the letter we sent initially was bipartisan. I dont expect compulsory presence to be necessary, but we intend to make certain the witnesses appear and we will use it if necessary. Emily i know in your work have been having to go back and forth between rhode island and washington. Do you imagine that this hearing would happen remotely . Would these ceos be videoconferencing in or with a go to washington . Rep. Cicilline well construct a hearing that is both safe and responsible. I always prefer to have hearings in person because i think it is a better opportunity for real exchange, and thats my hope and expectation. We will address that depending on the date and scheduling. What is really important is to have the decisionmakers before antitrust subcommittee to answer questions to help us conclude this investigation and provide some perspective on a number of critical issues. Emily now, as you mentioned, you have been looking into these companies for the better part of a year. They are all big tech but they are all very Different Companies. What have you learned so far and is anyone of them stand out in the more problematic than the other . Rep. Cicilline you are right. They are very Different Companies and there are very different behaviors that cause some concern and attention of the subcommittee. What we will do in the report is layout how the the marketplace is working. What the absence of real competition has produced. The market share that many of these Large Technology platforms have allows them to abuse the power they have to prevent people from entering the market, to fully profits because they control access to the marketplace. People referencing their own services and product. One of the reasons we have antitrust laws is the chief people of antitrust and design to address is economic coercion. To the extent that these Large Technology platforms are behaving like monopolies, they are imposing certain economic coercion that results in higher prices, less choices, less innovation. More difficulty for more startups. We want the marketplace to work. We wanted to be competitive so we can make room for the next great big apple, amazon and google. When you dont have innovation in the marketplace because you are a market power, one of the real consequences is innovation. This investigation has revealed a lot of Important Information. We will talk about the status of the state of the marketplace and then we will hopefully develop some bipartisan recommendations to bring more competition into the marketplace. Emily lets talk about facebook in particular, which has been in the hot seat over the last several weeks based on how it handles political speech and political ads, specifically not Fact Checking or removing a post by President Trump suggesting that looters be shot. Mark zuckerberg said he would review facebooks content policy but that decision stands. They have taken some steps to allow users to hide political ads, but how big of a problem is this and do you think facebook in saying it does not want to be the arbiter of truth, but being such a significant platform is not fulfilling its responsibility here to the public . Rep. Cicilline this is a very serious issue. So serious, ive introduced legislation apart from this investigation a couple of weeks ago to get on this issue of political ads. The idea that facebook would sell an advertising in an political context that is demonstrably false, and not only sell that add and make profits from it, but then assist the purchaser of the ad in microtargeting to people that are susceptible to believing it is really shocking. It is really that microtargeting element normally, if you put an ad on tv and it is false, their opponent can respond. The problem with microtargeting, it can be sent to specific people based on characteristics and you never even have an ability because of the marketplace to give the contrary view. It is that combination of willingness to sell a complete false ad that i know is false and helping that microtarget the people who are going to read it. That is a completely unacceptable activity. And, by the way, this First Amendment claim is a silly one. The First Amendment claim comes to the declaring of a person says something. Even that is not unlimited. You cannot yell fire in a crowded theater. What facebook does is ones that post is made or that ad is purchased, they use a set of algorithms to distribute that in a way that is most profitable to them. That is a business decision. That is not a First Amendment decision. They are using that algorithm to generate revenue and to generate views. So this notion of it is somehow facebooks First Amendment right, this is not true. The declaring of the statement is a persimmon and right. They are a business and then taking that business decision and algorithms about how to share that post. That is a business decision. That is not a First Amendment decision. Emily lets move on to apple. Apple preparing for its Big Developers conference on monday. Youve got developers complaining about this 30 cut apple has historically taken from the app store. You have the eu looking into apple, not just the app store but how it runs its payments program. When you look at apple, which to be fair, does not have a majority in terms of devices that are used. Ios devices that are used around the world. Does that concern you in terms of apples power or does it not appear to be as much of a number of a monopoly . Rep. Cicilline it is for medicine concern. We have a duopoly between google and apple in terms of apps. You think about the long tradition in this country about monopolies controlling and essential network and gatekeepers, keeping because of that outside power, keeping people out of the network. It happened with the railroads, telecom and banks. This is very concerning that the use of the app store, developers who are startups are basically being forced to pay a ransom of 30 or they are denied access to that marketplace. Appledentally, google and arrive at the same thing, a third off the top. That market power is very disturbing. If it were done in a competitive market, you might have a percentage of 2 or 3 when it is with credit cards. Even the credit card market is not really competitive, but it is still 2 or 3 . This is. This is highway robbery. They were able to do it because of their enormous market power and it is the only way people can access that app. For a developer, it puts them in a position that either you pay us the ransom or you go out of business in your app is not a success. That is a perfect example of an abuse of your market power, to profits. Exact unfair who pays for that . The consumer. They are paying for that because that get passed on. It is not just one app or one company. This is a market wide problem and something that is concerning. Emily so, when do you imagine the committees report will be complete and what do you believe the recommendations will be . Rep. Cicilline i cant tell you that. It is a little too early to tell you what the recommendations would be. I have my own ideas. It will be a judgment of the committee. We had hoped to be done by june or even late may. Obviously, covid19 through the schedule off some. It is my hope we will complete this process later than the end of july, with the report coming immediately after that, so we have enough time in the fall to introduce legislation that responds to the recommendations of the report. Emily now, i know you mentioned there is bipartisan support here, but given the current administration, do you believe the government right now is powerful enough to fight such powerful companies . If there is the political will to fight . Rep. Cicilline thats a great question. This investigation has been very bipartisan. I think it will continue to be. I dont know if we will have agreement on every solution but i think everyone recognizes that are real challenges because of this absence of competition in the digital marketplace and the huge kind of monopoly like power of these large platforms. You are right, theres a long history of translating economic power into political power. So, this will be a real test because i think we will have a really good report and they have an excellent set of recommendations. I know we will fight hard to make those a reality. We will have to make our case to the American People why this matters in their lives. Why the absence of competition in this marketplace has implications for consumers and workers and innovation and startups. I think when we do that, we will continue to get support to move forward in really good reform. Emily meantime, next week, the Judiciary Committee will be hearing testimony from a couple of whistleblowers on the iticiaztio politicization of Law Enforcement and talking about Police Reform. What testimony will this involve . Im sure you have been thinking about this. What kind of reform you believe is needed. Rep. Cicilline we had our hearing this past week. The George Floyd Justice and policing act which has significant reform for the Police Department in terms of banning chokeholds, creating incentives for Police Departments to be accredited, a National Police this condo registry. Make sure people are held accountable by the wrongdoing by having a reasonable legal standard. A series of other investments in strengthening the relationship between the police and community. I think we have a really good bill. It is the most comprehensive Police Reform bill probably ever considered by congress and it will pass of this coming week and will be on to the senate and hopefully they will take swift action. Emily meantime, business goes on even though we are in the middle of a pandemic. He pushed for a ban on mma. What do you think this will accomplish and how long do you think that ban should go on for knowing that we dont know when we will come out of this thing . There is so much uncertainty ahead. Rep. Cicilline the reason i have been pressing for that is we really dont want in the middle of a Global Health pandemic investors and the investor class to seize an opportunity to further consolidate market power and gobbled up a bunch of companies that will in the end disadvantage consumers and workers and our economy in the long run. What i suggested is our antitrust agencies ought not be jamming through a bunch of mergers, but instead focused on the real harms consumers right now and is things like price gouging and other anticompetitive behavior. It is having a real impact in the midst of a Global Health pandemic. Take a pause, take a breath. Not preventing anything from happening permanently, but lets allow the limited resources of our antitrust agencies to be focused on the most immediate harms and wellbeing of the American People, and not use it as an opportunity to facilitate a bunch of market consolidation. We saw that during the Great Recession and we saw that in the Financial Services sector. There has been a lot of talk, a lot of reporting of investors being told is a lot of opportunities out there. This is the kind of language that the folks use to gobbled up companies, to increase market share that i think is not good for consumers. Take a pause, take a deep breath. Focus your energies on the things that matter to the American People right now until we get through this pandemic. Emily all right, congressman david cicilline, thank you for taking the time with us on this friday evening for you. We will be watching to see the next moves you make and following all that of the developments. Coming up, monday marks the beginning of apples first level virtual worldwide Developers Conference. We will have a preview and introduce you to a young developer who just made her first ios app aimed at social justice. That is next. This is bloomberg. Emily apple set to hold its first ever virtual worldwide Developers Conference on monday. One person who will be plugged in is sophia, a 19yearold coder who won apples swiss student challenge. Her app, her new ios app focuses on social justice. I spoke to her earlier today. I was going into my first year of college, a freshman going into the big city. One of my friends we had absolutely no idea how to deal with the situation because the school, they dont teach you how to deal with things like that. At thee get is same time, i was taking my first class so i was really looking at Sexual Harassment law and all of that works. If felt like it paved the yellow brick road for surveyors that were very nonpaved and i didnt like the way that looked. I wanted to use my ability and my skills as someone who is able to use Computer Science to project social change to create an app of my own. I created redawn. The main feature is there is it allows you to have a conversation. Humans a very natural conversational beings. I wanted to feel very natural for people to be able to converse. I have a mapping feature so people can track local resources. And incident logs so people are able to login without having to feel like they have to step out. Theres a lot of stigma. I wanted it to feel very natural. Emily what was the process of creating the app like, from a technical perspective . For all the young people out there who might be thinking to themselves, how do i do this . Sofia from a technical standpoint, i used apples development language. You can put your technology on the app store and reach a wide range of people. Building an app is a little bit daunting because you do have to fail many times along the way. I think through my knowledge and Computer Science, i have gained a lot of confidence because i learned you have to fail in order to succeed. Being able to sort of come to terms with that, allows me to come out of my shell and share my knowledge and my technology with other people. Long, nonstopd and shared it with a lot of my friends to see the type of feedback i would get on the app. What things make sense and what things didnt. And eventually launched that. Emily how did you get into coding in the first place . Sofia theres an organization that teaches people 13 to 18 how to code. I was 15 years old. I had no idea what coding and Computer Science and all of that was. It was very abstract concept in my head. I knew i always wanted to use science, technology, engineering and math, and use that to drive social change and be able to go to that program, i was really able to broaden my horizons because it felt like there was nothing i couldnt do because i was in this classroom with so many other likeminded girls. Because Computer Sciences not a field that has a lot of women, it was really empowering to be in that allgirls environment. To this day, i am friends with all the girls i was in the program with and have been able to share that knowledge and that wisdom with more girls nationwide. Emily now that you have these skills, what is next . What is the impact that you want to have on the world . Sofia yeah, end all, be all, i want to be able to use Computer Science to be able to impact as many people as possible. I feel like Computer Science a lot of the time is very heavily stigmatized because people think, oh, you have to be good at science, good at math and all of this stuff. At the end of the day, i believe if you are able to use be ab le to impact some of the people in this area at a large scale. I want to be able to use my skills to continue creating apps that serve the communities that i am a part of because i do believe that the subsidy is the mother of invention necessity is the mother of invention. Emily finally, a quick programming note. Tonight at 7 00 p. M. Eastern time, we will bring you a special edition of bloomberg technology, tensions and turning points. We have talked to civil rights activists, lawmakers, investors, entrepreneurs. Talking about the tensions that exist in silicon valley. Tech facing a reckoning, including the difference in philosophies between twitter and facebook. Take a listen. I think marks decision was wrong. I have spoken to some people and facebook high up for a great deal of time. I have seen people try and try with him. There are some really amazing people at facebook. They are speaking out now. Even more so are not speaking out but i think they will. The company spent a lot of time outlining standards, they call them community standards, that they are supposed to enforce against all of their users. When one particular user comes along who happens to assent his post, it seems to be a very different standard. In a lot of ways, facebook is too big to fix right now. Facebook has 2. 5 billion users around the world constantly posting and more than 100 languages. That is a system that is too big to govern. You have one young white man who has one experience in this life who has a control of billions of people, what they see and what they view . It is wrong and i dont know if he is drunk with power or if he is simply just in a bubble. I think mark is very fixated on power. I think he really has a vision that his platform is going to replace governments in many context. I think both twitter and facebook need to take along, hard look at what they have created and the monster they have created in terms of business may come back to bite them in terms of just ideology about what is in the best interest of the American People. I think twitter is making the stance of being assertive and saying they have the responsibility to make sure the service is used in a certain way. Facebook is much larger. They really view themselves as utility. Facebook wants to concert themselves as the internet. In that case, they want to take no responsibility for how that utility is used. I think its a difference in philosophy. Specialont miss that bloomberg technology, tensions and turning points, 7 00 p. M. Eastern time. Thank you for joining us this week.
