The coronavirus outbreak. This is a group of experts are outbreak could go on for another two years and wont be contained until 2 3 of population is immune. Joining us to break down the day wall as at least on street, taylor riggs has been digs into the markets for us. Tailor, a rough day, there were so many signs of hope this week . Felt like a mood shift this morning, emily, we woke up, a sentiment had been negative. As you remember, 30 after we bottomed out on the lows on 23. H there could have been some rofit taking here as well as some concerns continuing about the economy. We got news in the past few days overnights that trump was considering floating around some ideas of how to punish china for for the handle of the virus, for shutting down a lot of the doctors back in december who were really trying to warn this. Some of those renewed tensions some of the ng debt, thats very far stretched according to some of the to, ysts that im speaking but another option to be tariffs. Now those tariffs are what would pressure the index, theyre off 5 or so, that would hit that mark and a lot of revenue exposure over there to china. It felt like a big sort mood shift today. In the meantime, elon musk outraged es, he was about the extent of the shelter tesla operations still shut down at the factory in fremont. Treated that teslas stock price is too high. Ow does that influence the shares today . Taylor the shares plunged as uch as 12 immediately on that news. I cant figure out why a c. E. O. Would say his shares are overvalued, nonetheless, some of the tweets from elon musk i have to figure out myself. The facts, back in 2018, he had tweet at 420 a share. That led to a settlement of because the lion s. E. C. Said that those stocks, that tweet, of course, had effectively moved the market. So they came to an agreement with the s. E. C. That the tweets by to be preapproved teslas general counsel. I was reading some research from our litigation analyst. She said that this tweet indeed could violate that deal, but could argue that his opinion on teslas stock price is based on past results, indicative of a future market event, still the that negative headline, that tweeting at some and y concerning news shares ended up lower by did 10 on the day. Emily in the meantime, i feel we have to talk about oil. 7 and ares plunging obviously oil has been something to watch over the last few weeks. Hat is happening more broadly in the Energy Sector . Taylor the Energy Sector within sector of the s p 500 had its worst day down about 6 or worst performer of all of the major sectors in the s p 500. To see a ntinuing divergence here between the Energy Stocks and actual crude prices. Crude is back up to almost 20 a barrel. Today. Up 4. 5 or so the Energy Stocks are not performing as well. Capping s you know, their cutting by 13 as they cash. Conserve exxonmobil posting their first love on their profit going back 32 years. As you can see, their crude having its sixth straight week gains, the best since april 10. Costs that the Energy Companies are doing are hurting their income statement, their balance sheet. Boosting the output as we really start to pull back on that output and the prices. G emily all right, taylor, thanks breaking it down for us, appreciate your insight as always here. Some of thero in on tech stocks with brent, analyst at jeffries. With amazon, t also plunging almost 8 today on he back of results from yesterday, of course, amazon saw shrinking profit, warned about a quarterly loss. Amazon has always had the margins and has been certainly most visible tech company in the pandemic for better or for worse. Take on why analysts are so sour now . Brent hi, emily, the stock had into this, at a point where amazon could not deliver through. Was great, but the bottom line was not. 175,000 employees, its expensive, right, there is they canfficiency that gain out of the gate. It really resolved around the on the expense side that thats really what investors honed in on. I think as they said, heavily constrained, there are shipping disclosed in their filing today was up 41 year over year nd their gross merchant value is 27. So costs are rising faster than products. Of so you look at that in balance, clearly balance out over time as they get, you know, inventory back in. We think short term, you know, big just a combination of a run plus the expense. Really thats it. Amazoning else was good, prime, you look the ad business ctually accelerated while google, facebook, and twitter all decelerated. A lot of bright spots, but the largely reflecting a lot of moves. Mily well talk about google and facebook. To call before a house panel on antitrust issues and how amazon is treating third party sellers. How much of a concern is this . Brent i think its a big concern, but its not really we havent e that seen. Aeko system app where they let partners put platform. S on a over time, they started competing with some of those the same nd i think thing is happening in some sense in amazons re and business, they have select roducts that they will prove that they will actually produce themselves and expand into new ategories and some of the partners will feel that theyre eing, their toes are being stepped on. I think ultimately this is other ng we have seen in Tech Companies and we think that ongoing oing to be an issue going forward. Emily lets talk about google facebook, obviously both of them depend on online industry g, the ad certainly going into a contraction period, facebook saw decline, but that things ave been stabilizing in april, alphabet numbers werent as bad as some thought they could be. Its the current corner that all concerned about where impact from uller this pandemic, what are you expecting from the current badly the adst how industry will be hit and how and that hits Facebook Google . Brent the Third Quarter is going to be bad, no question. You look at facebook, they saw an even pullback among small businesses. They have seen a flat year over rate so things havent gotten terrible in a decline, youre seeing a decline and twitter and others. I think ultimately june is going a really, really tough quarter. Its going to have a bigger they to twitter because do more brand than direct response and brand is really worst twitter is the off. We think facebook is the best in and google is somewhere the middle if we had to kind of frame it. Isimately the one thing that binding us all together is the right, the eyeballs are there. Usage of the highest actual media in our life but the lowest advertising rates. Are s because advertisers in a spin. Companies are not spending a lot of money on advertising as they figure out their business. So it really goes back to the shape of the virus. This under control and get more confidence built, dollars ing to see ad come back, but we believe twitter will be the last one to come back, rs facebook to us is the most you have and then snap somewhere inbetween. Emily what makes you think that positionis in a better than google . Brent just the numbers right now. Saw again in late march a decline, facebook said things were flat. At the pure numbers and the magnitude of the downfall, thats just the numbers that they have given. Measure it by numbers, number one. Facebook is learly smaller than google. Has a lotee, facebook of communities around there, a people are spending money. Direct response is really high instagram is at doing very, very well and around commerce is extremely high, facebook and instagram and anybody on nstagram that has bought anything knows what im talking about. You end up buying things you need, you see the picture and you clear through. Hat is so big for the advertisers that we speak to that sell sweatpants or stayathome gear. We think ultimately you know, again, no one is immune. We think theyre all the risk. We do think again, we have earning e in the 10 number for facebook and again a low 20 multiple gets you into a stock. Level of no one is going to be immune out of this. Right, brent thill, always good to have your perspective here on the show. Coming up, ime, thousands of Food Network Cooking classes, only some them fore going to get free. Well tell you who coming up speak with the c. E. O. Direct consumers at discovery. E. A. Is faring in the industry is it the one in the pandemic that is pandemic proof, this is bloomberg. Peter we launched the product in october. I. O. S. And ble on android and roku. Its available on all platforms today. Partnership with amazon is special, theyre the leading ompany in the world for Voice Technology with alexa. We have the most powerful food brand in the world with food network. Its sort of a combination of those two that we think creates experience. Customer you as an example, emily, are in a cooking class with us, you can use alexa commands. This is powerful. Doing live favorites classes and during this time, a lot of people want comfort food, has a brunch burger saturday. We got some on sunday, so were excited to see audience reaction. Im hungry ight, already, peter, thanks for that little taste. Im curious how discovery are faring oducts during this time of social like what channels and shows are seeing maybe a in traffic, Discovery Education i would imagine would are eing some friends that interesting. Peter its incredible to see the lift. Precovid19 and sort of postcovid19 if there is such a window. Linear tv side, were seeing huge audience increases hgtv, t. L. C. , k, discovery channel, people are a lot more time at home. On a director consumer side of the business, all of our world, we ound the have a product in europe, motor rend in the u. S. , Food Network Kitchen, a product in poland, theyre getting huge increases, users, but also in subscribers. So there is absolutely a huge seeing, you know, 40, 50 increases in engagement and all across the board. Arent iscovery stocks doing so well, we have seen a the ne in about 20 over last three months. S that the impact of the pandemic and how do you expect discovery to weather that given go on for many more weeks and months . Eter well, if you take a look at most of the media companies, they really have two major affiliate eams, revenue and ad sales. Our affiliate revenue is stable, on the ad sales front, were seeing that impacted by the pandemic. A forward look at this company, i think we all believe very strongly that were a business tied to the super fan verticals. People love food. They love cooking. They love home. They love natural history. As these o question direct to Consumer Products become bigger and bigger over very we feel we have a bright future. I personally dont feel like the stock price actually represents true value of this Company Going forward, yeah. That you have worked at amazon for such a long time and you were in charge of sellers, we have been covering amazons elationship with third party sellers, now jeff bezos is being to testify at the house over antitrust issues, do you party sellershird on amazon are getting a fair shake . Know, i guess i would say this, in my time at amazon, i leadership is n of extremely high integrity. I think its a very, very well company. I think at the very top of the leadership principals of amazon obsessed. Ustomer amazon prides customers, not just the people that buy on the but also their seller partners, their web partners, partners. Rtising if my time at amazon is any ndication, i think amazon does a really great job with all of their customer groups. Faricy, discovery c. E. O. Of direct to consumer, going to be tuning into those classes with all of my free time this weekend, thank you, peter, for joining us. Peter thank you, emily. In the meantime we are getting breaking news that kim jongun has made his first north korearance in in 20 days showing up at a factory there, of course, there speculation t of about kims health, speculation so well asnt doing after a medical procedure and peculation that he might be in very, very poor or very serious now according to state run media, kim jongun has appearance at a factory in the country. To continue to follow these headlines as we get them. They are rolling in right now and bring you more as we have it. Ofll be right back with more bloomberg. Were going to be talking about apple coming up. Emily for the first time in more than a decade, apple didnt the de a forecast for quarter or the year sparking concern that the iphone makers will suffer later his year, im bringing in alster who looked at this. We spoke with tim cook talked about a very depressed march but things were picking up in april. Investors trying to digest his comment after hours going from positive to negative apple reported its results. Shared were down a little over 1. 5 . What are the concerns . Thingir i think the main is uncertainty, especially for were rent quarter that in, actually the comments he made to you were probably the so far to we have know what is happening. March andow, the late early april, he describes as midst of ssed in the the crisis, i imagine not many people were buying expensive point. S at that then he said it picked up in the that half of april, but was from a very depressed level this year, he rd sales tion that iphone and wearable sales, they are to perform year over year worse than the First Quarter in the second quarter. Basically this huge recession that going on, so you well applet know how is going to do sales. About the id talk lack of visibility, the lack of certainty to explain why apple a forecast and i did ask him, how do you think 1,000 plus phones are going to perform in this economy and he was optimistic, and especially of the ic because stimulus from the federal government. I wonder what the reality is got, you know, 20 Unemployed People and no end in sight to this recession. Alistair i think there are a consider. To that theya new device did release which wasnt i wouldnt say perfect for the but its 400 or more, a better offering from apple and even has face i. D. It with a mask on. I think also on the positive ledger, apple and even some other Tech Companies, ut especially apple has become if you already have an iphone, its become almost an i would say. Vice that should help them. Emily right. Way toely an interesting look at it. Alistair barr, thank you for incite. Tesla and ng about another tweet storm by elon musk chunk of tesla a big change. This is bloomberg. 49. 50 daddy, i found you good job. Now im gonna stay here and you go hide. Watch your favorites from anywhere in the house with the Xfinity Stream app. Free with your xfinity service. Now any room can be a tv room. Stream live tv, on demand shows and movies, even your dvr recordings. Download the Xfinity Stream app today to stream the entertainment you love. Emily welcome back to bloomberg technology. Tesla shares plunging today, down by as much as 13 . This after, what else but a tweet from elon musk who tweeted that even he believes tesla share price is too high. Ol who to bring it dana h covers tesla and has covered elon musk for the last several years. Why would elon musk tweeted that his own shares are priced too high . Dana yes, this was quite the news cycle today. People said he believes tesla is overvalued in the past why he is doing it now when he had a great quarter is anybodys guess. The backdrop of this is he is very frustrated with the fact Teslas Fremont factory remains closed. I personally wonder if this is a way to pressure governor gavin newsom. Yeah, it sent the stock down quite a bit today. Some people are asking me if hacked. Been thi no, this is elon. Emily he has been very vocal about the stayathome order because the tesla factory remains shut down in fremont, california. He has been very upset that workers cannot go in and work on building cars. But there has been some backlash. Musk calling this fascist, that this is not democratic at all. There was a wave of tweets and responses today, including from Ariana Grandes mom who now says she has to sell her tesla, boycotttesla. What do you make of the response here . Dana whats really interesting is that 10,000 workers worked at that factory. So, it is a big employer in the bay area. Tesla has had a long and fairly copacetic relationship with the state of california. Elon musk is looking to build a second gigafactory in the u. S. It is not going to be california. He said it could be in texas. It will clearly probably be in a red state. While he has sort of expressing his and normas frustration with the his enormous frustration that he is not able to operate in fremont, behind the scenes, tesla is negotiating some kind of deal for a factory in another state. It has been really interesting politically to think about all of these nations happening while he is tweeting things like give americans back their freedom. Part of the tweets today were part of the starspangled banner. Hes appealing to the libertarian trump crowd in a lot of ways, while protests are happening across the country. Its strategic in some ways. Hes looking to wrangle a good deal out of any state he will get a gigafactory. He is also trying to let california let the factory open. Emily he might be playing to one crowd, but there are tesla owners who are calling him incredibly irresponsible for not thinking about the Public Health risk. Whats the other state that could be the beneficiary of this . Texaswell, states like which have already basically signaled they are reopening their economy. Right to work states, states that have been very quick to reopen. California, the bay area was the first region in the country to close down because of coronavirus and it will be very careful how it reopens. The other thing that is interesting they got burned today. His tweet about the stock sent the shares down a significant amount. Theres been so much in the past about elon musk trying to burn the short. Today, he burned the long. He burned his longterm investors and his own employees. Employees have a lot of the compensation tied up in the Company Stock as well. Alsoimes theres speculation did this to prove to people that he does not care about money. That he really just cares about the work. He does things that impact stocks, it impacts a lot more than just him. Emily lets not forget Ariana Grandes mom. Dana yes, lets not forget Ariana Grandes mom we now says she has to get rid of her tesla. Emily we will continue to follow that. Dana hull, thank you so much. Meantime, Congress Wants answers from jeff bezos. Why some of his past statements may be coming back to haunt him. That is next. This is bloomberg. The House Antitrust Committee is calling on jeff bezos to testify. The concern about how amazon has treated thirdparty sellers. I want to bring in our Bloomberg News reporter ben brody who has been following this story. Statements that were made by amazons general counsel that might be coming back to haunt amazon and get jeff bezos in the hot seat. What is the latest here . Ben the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to bezos after the report we have been seeing all week that amazon systematically collected data on thirdparty merchants to improve its own pride of. An amazon employee testified last year saying they dont do that all. The Judiciary Committee is saying you have to come in and clarify this. If you dont, we have the capabilities to subpoena you. They said we are willing to. Look, this could have been perjured. Execs weve seen big tech testifying in washington over the last few years, including facebook ceo mark zuckerberg, alphabet ceo sundar pichai, jack dorsey from twitter. Do we think that jeff bezos could actually find himself in the hot seat . Ben i think it is entirely possible. I think the committee is willing to issue a subpoena. I think you are right. Bezos is the big fish you has not gone in. Hes the last remaining target. This particular antitrust investigation into big tech has really zeroed in on amazon, google, facebook, apple. Bezos is the one who has engaged the least. He clearly does not want to, but the committee is saying we are not going to issue our final report, we are going to keep this investigation going unless you come in. They are at somewhat of a standstill. Emily lets talk a little bit about the progress in these antitrust investigations. We have been in the middle of a pandemic. Alphabet ceo, i asked what the status was. She said they are continuing to respond. Do you know how aggressively these investigations have been able to move forward, if at all, given the fact that so much of the country is shut down . Willi think a lot of this depend on what congress is able to do as a whole when it comes back in. Many staffers can come in how many members can be together on a dais at the same time. I think a lot of those questions are lingering. As far as from what i am aware for my documents, it is still continuing at the time the lockdown came down. It had kind of trickled off. The majority of them happened in the fall but it is still ongoing. The Committee Said it wanted to issue its final report, its recommendation at the end of march. The pandemic the actual legislative work has been scuttled off, saying this is not going until bezos comes in. Emily ben brody for us in washington. Thanks so much for joining us. Now speaking of amazon, essential workers from amazon, instacart, walmart, grocery, retail and Delivery Companies are striking across the country today on may day, protesting various labor issues including safety concerns, pay and benefits. They want better protection. I talk about all that and more with taskrabbit ceo stacy brownphilpot. Take a listen. Stacy while we are not aware of any taskrabbit involved in a strike, this is highlighting the importance of gig economy workers at this time. This pandemic has really brought to the forefront how essential these workers are. Taskersking is that our and a lot of people going out providing essential needs are really heroes and should be asking for their rights and benefits. They determine when and how they want to work. We have a platform that gives him the freedom to do so. I encourage our taskers to ask for what they need. We are doing all the things to give them safe providing safety kits, giving them hand sanitizers, gloves, masks, and providing them in a way to do all their tasks in a contactless way. I ask the community to support those in the frontline. Emily you use the word hero, and we were speaking with an instacart worker who was protesting. She said she didnt like being called a hero. She said we are doing this because we are desperate, we need the money. A lot of people who do these jobs, they are out of work and especially at a time when the economy is going into recession, they will be the most hurt. Do you think with the government is doing is enough . Do you think the federal government can do more . Should Companies Like taskrabbit and others do more to make sure that pay and benefits are there . Stacy not everybody is impacted by this pandemic equally. You are right. Many of our taskers who continue to do so by doing it because they need to make money. They depend on our platform to make meaningful income. Yes, they are going up, but they are going out and doing this because they need to earn income. The need to make money. Opportunity and we know some of our taskers are taking advantage of that. We are putting in preventative measures. We are helping them do tasks in a virtual way. A lot of Furniture Assembly task are happening virtually. We are doing our part to adapt the way our Business Model works and the way tasks happen so that people can be safe. I think it takes a community to do this. It is not just government, it is not just business. Emily there has been other workers protesting the stayathome orders, they want to go back to work. Youre on Gavin Newsoms task force. Shelterinplace in california was just extended to may 31. Theres a lot of grumbling about musk. M, say, elon he called it an outrage. What is your reaction to some of this criticism, that this is too much blunt force and it should have been more of a phased reopening, or that companies should be given a choice . On the task force. It is a collection of government, business, health care, academics. We are all trying to make the right decision. It is a phased approach. There are four phases. One of the big areas of focus is focusing on the communities that are hardest hit. A big piece of entering into the next phase is how do we make sure we have childcare for all of the parents who want to go back to work . It theres a lot of infrastructure that needs to be worked out. How do we make sure we have Testing Available for anybody who wants to get tested and those tests are accurate . Those are all the questions the facing. Ce are it is not that nobody wants to go back to work, we want to make sure we do it in the right way. My goal is to make sure all the independent contractors who want to continue to work and do that when the state reopens in a safe way. Emily you have said your growth and activity has slowed but people are still working and they are doing tasks. Grocery delivery, you mentioned putting together furniture. How much activity are you seeing and what kind of activity . Stacy we have seen an increase in growth in deliveries, all kinds. Cery shopping, pricking up picking up medication, dropping things offer health care workers. We have seen an increase in putting things together. Trampolines, barbecue grills, exercise equipment, desks. Those of us who have never worked from home before are working from home now. A lot of those things are continuing to grow for us. It is a shift in those categories. As we enter a new normal, we are thinking about what kind of activities people will want to do through taskrabbit in the future and will be investing in those areas as well. The acquisition of taskrabbit by ikea. Im curious how that relationship is going right now and what the pandemic means for ikea, which obviously people need desks, but people are not shopping in ikea which is an important part of the experience. Stacy our business have stabilized and we had a healthy amount of growth coming into this pandemic which has helped us stabilize where we are today. Theyea stores have closed, have cap the Online Business open. While they are working through went to open stores, they have used a lot of their time and workers to help across the country, communities thrive. I just saw a note yesterday that in california, they opened up the ikea parking lot to provide food for families. Bank for those families. That was a huge contribution to those communities. We are happy to have them as a partner. We are not finding what we want now but we are doing our part to help in this pandemic so that when we reopen, our customers will come back, enjoy shopping in ikea. And using taskrabbit to get all of the things assembled. Emily our conversation with taskrabbit ceo stacy brownphilpot. If there is one industry that may be coronavirus proof, that could be gaming. Our exclusive interview with ea Ceo Andrew Wilson is next. Emily in this time of social distancing, people are hungry for even more forms of entertainment and that includes gaming. That puts bigger pressure on Companies LikeElectronic Arts to continue to churn out content even the people are sheltering in place around the world. We sat down with Electronic ArtsCeo Andrew Wilson to talk about how he is managing 6000 Game Developers remotely. Ostrew we went alm potentially fully work from home midmarch. We started enrolling working from home programs in january. We have facilities in china and korea, so we have early impact zones of covid19. By midmarch, we had 9500 employees working from home. I would say because we restarted our teams have done a lot of work in the background. Within two or three days, we were almost fully operational as an organization. Now we have about 6500 employees building games and creating content and delivering entertainment across the globe. Inspirede unbelievably by what our people have been able to do what they do and support our community. To the extent they are missing elements in the real world of sport, our teams have come together in partnership with the leagua, nhl,r la ufc to deliver new Interactive Entertainment. We feel good about our entertainment. Emily the ncaa took a big step towards letting players use their name, image, likeness and to be paid, but not on videogames. You did used to have ncaa football. That was very popular. Are you disappointed that the rule change didnt include videogames . Would you like to bring that game back . Andrew i get emails every day and every weekend and every month from fans about College Football games, back us to bring them back. Goodness of hugs and if i can bring ncaa football back for them. I think this is a great step. I believe it is the first step. We continue to work with the leaders of schools and athletes, ncaa and others in and around the field. Our goal and this is to deliver great Interactive Entertainment to the extent we are allowed to. Our hope is over time, we can do that again, but we are not sure when that will be. Emily ok. So, i know people are playing more games, but we are also going into a massive economic downturn. People are losing their jobs. Do you think that is going to hurt your bottom line, that people that are going to be willing to pay to play, essentially . Andrew i think as an industry and as a company, we have great concern for all of our communities and any Macro Economic challenges they may face. We will look to help them any way we can through that process. What i would say is what we have seen in the past is our form of entertainment has tremendous value. The cost of a videogame is not high in comparison to many things. Whether it is free to play games like apex legends or our mobile 9 subscription gives us access to the full catalog of games. Even as we move through this and try to work to ensure our communities prosper and dont face challenges that some people are predicting, we are able to provide them tremendous value entertainment and fulfill the need they have. Emily the biggest games right now appear to be fornite and call of duty. What is your answer to that, in sort of a comparable battlefield . I might challenge the biggest games are fornite and call of duty. I agree with you they are certainly big. I what also highlight one of the greatest entertainment values on the planet. Madden, which has had just its best year in the franchise. Apex legends has 80 million players to date, not to mention the sims which has been a tremendous game for communities where people are coming together and having Virtual Birthday parties. A whole different demographic of players. Portfoliood about the and how we have been able to use that portfolio to entertain players and fill some of the gaps that has been formed as a result of the coronavirus. Emily epic games teamed up with travis scott for an in game concert on fortnite. Will we be seeing you doing in game events . Andrew we have been doing a lot of great stuff our communities. Our stay at home together campaign has had across celebrities and athletes and tv folks who have come in and played with fans and played in tournaments. We have another hundred or so of those in place and continue to work on those at a challenging time. Emily talk to us about your resources to bring new content to market. With all of people at home right now, what does that mean for the will startd when we seeing some new content . Andrew you are seeing content almost weekly right now as we continue to provide content, both paid and free for the community through this challenging time. We have been essentially working from home since midmarch. One of the things that comes from the investment we have made over the last five or six years, single engine, single i. T. Structure, we have been able to rally in organization and continue to deliver amazing content for our fans. I think it is too early to tell whether there is any meaningful longterm impacts in our pipeline, but right now, we feel very good about how operational we are as a company and how we have been able to support fans with new content and new entertainment in this period. Emily Electronic ArtsCeo Andrew Wilson there. Some more friday tweet action from elon musk. As we told you earlier, he tweeted he believes tesla shares were overvalued. He has been getting a lot of flak for that, especially from tesla investors. A user on twitter saying could you please state your account is hacked, you are killing every investor that invested in tesla. Musk responded saying as always, i am optimistic about tesla in the longterm. We will be watching this through the weekend and bring you any developments on monday. Have a wonderful weekend, everybody. Stay tuned. This is bloomberg. David science gave us some hope. The economic numbers, they gave us none. This is bloomberg wall street week. Im david westin. Welcome back. David another week, another week of being at home, at least for most of us. Another week of really deteriorating economic numbers in the u. S. And over in europe. But maybe this week will be really important about the numbers of the economy. The number of cases, the number of
