As a surprise you how far they had to go when it comes to appeasing investors . Sharon they mostly have returned to where they were with a loose Monetary Policy. You have the ecb actually buying bonds, very much in a planned way. So if there is anything different now, it is that there is less uncertainty about where the Central Banks are going. It is very clear plans about what their Balance Sheets look like, where the expansion is on par, and we are to seeing them keep a very loose Monetary Policy but not changing anything. Everything remains steady. So that is a Good Environment for the equity markets, and they seem to be responding appropriately. In a veryare still loose monica be. Scarlet it raises a question in a very loose Monetary Policy. Scarlet right, and it raises the question, if a more robust response is required from a central bank, are they in a place to be able to execute on that . The fed has more room than other Central Banks. Fed does not like to go down negative rates. What they can do is buy Corporate Bonds and put liquidity into markets that way. And again, increase their balance sheet. Ut they have no room when you look at u. S. Fiscal policy, we are running an in orbis deficit an enormous deficit. Strategic, to be this is a very good time to borrow money. You cannot get it cheaper. So this is the place in which you would actually have an expansionary policy right now and they probably would not take on Additional Debt this way. So they are rolling over each of these debts from higher rates paying peoplemost to borrow money. Scarlet i want to ask more about the European Central bank because we have this handoff taking place. It has already taken place. Mario draghi, who basically saved the euro zone, has passed the baton to Christine Lagarde. When he left, he had resumed qe essentially. It caused a lot of division, internal division in the ecb. Does that matter . Sharyn well, it depends on if you want to go back to what they view as normalization, where you have the bond market and the equity market and sufficient liquidity within the system itself with the central book the Central Banks are not being the primary pump. If you think that that is a problem, that the Central Banks have to step in every time there is some sort of crunch in the system, then in fact that is what we view as mature Capital Markets that do not seem to be functioning the way we anticipate. That is a problem. Now . A problem right no, they will continue to do that. But at some point there is a limit. Scarlet will it be a problem for Christine Lagarde . Because one of the reasons investors seem to be more excited about her, or anticipated good results from her, is because she is at heart more of a politician than an economist. If it has oil below 60, deficits become far bigger. Deficit, the budget expected to be around 6. 5 to gdp. That,begins to rise off rating agencies will downgrade saudi arabia. They aramco stock in the Saudi Stock Exchange will be challenged. A lot of countries are going to look at what saudi arabia does. A 60 barrel of oil will be challenging. Scarlet we did shoot up. We did not see much of the saudi reaction. Why . John saudi arabia clearly understands that it has a choice to respond. If it does respond, the counter response will be quite challenging for itself and the rest of the region. I dont think saudi arabia wants to have a war with iran. Clearly, all the indication so far point to iranians being involved in this attack, however markets have a different view and although initially they spiked for the first few hours, after that oil prices dipped, and a few days after that they dipped lower than the level when the attacks took place. Waslet part of that because saudi arabia got its infrastructure back online quickly. What has the kingdom learned from that attack . If something should happen again, how would it respond . Could be a distinction between a centrist candidate which would not be as aggressive in terms of budget policy, but perhaps one of the more liberal types of candidates where there will be a spending increase. There was a peak in august and now we have come down to 11 trillion, still a lot but nowhere near the emergency levels. A lot of questions on whether we have seen the end of the bond market rally. What happened here . Nick i think a couple of things. You see some of the safe havens the lessening of tensions between china and the u. S. In terms of the central bank hasook, the Central Reserve ended its easing. Australia and new zealand are both very close to zero. Lessmeans you have seen amounts of bonds and that is why you have seen prices down and yields up. Scarlet this is one third of the worlds total. Have we seen the end of this problem . Nick probably not. One thing we look for is the Manufacturing Sector and how it seemed to be stabilizing, so i suspect not. Up atect growth will pick wells fargo, 3 this year, 3. 3 in 2021. The other thing that will stabilize things will be fiscal policy. If this Monetary Policy and negative Interest Rates or low Interest Rates are ineffective, we will see fiscal policy support and that will stop from further easing and move down into negative territory in terms of yield. Scarlet lets get to fx. As much action a Central Banks took, fx volatility was low, record lows. There were some moments where you had flash crashes or flash spiked like when the yen 6 in the witching hour. Inl we see more of the same 2020 where volatility is low except for a couple of instances . Nick that is an interesting and difficult question. If you want volatility, you have to look toward the pound last year. Scarlet that was idiosyncratic and unique to the pound. Nick it is relatively low in terms of trade tensions. I dont think volatility will go down further but i dont think it will go up. One of the key sources of volatility are Central Banks, will they surprise and does that move the markets . Be lessbanks will active compared to 2018 and less surprises. We have been doing some analysis that volatility should have been higher. If we are not going to see triggers this year, i dont think we will see a pickup in volatility. Scarlet we had talked about swedens central bank and how it tried to get itself out of negative rates and made this move. Does that signal other Central Banks following its lead or is this an experiment where the riksbank might need to reverse course . Nick i dont think they will need to reverse course but i dont think we will see Central Banks following. The u. S. Federal reserve is not in negative territory so it will move things along. The European Central bank, generally they tend to be much more gradualist. 27, 28, 29 policymakers on the policy board, so it does take a while for their economy to turn around and get those policymakers to agree. I dont think we will see Central Banks following the riksbank higher. The only one that is following them higher or leading them is norway. Generally stable Monetary Policy. Even if they are not profitable today, we have not seen much of the financials and we have to see a path to profitability in a reasonable timeframe. Nick we have changed our mind and there is some hope in terms of the pmis surveys and the numbers in november were quite good. The Chinese Renminbi has followed the contours of the will they or wont they do the trade deal. The markets are looking at more of the will they . We are turning around about seven and before we got well above seven. We see signs of strength or recovery in the chinese currency. Over the next year or so, we will move down to 6. 90. Scarlet what does that tell you about beijings ability to cushion the blow from u. S. Tariffs . Nick there is still some capacity to cushion the blow. The trade outlook is a big deal for china. It is not quite as big of deal it would have been 10 years ago. They are a lot lower than they were, but coming back to what levers do the chinese policymakers still have to pull, the budget deficit is not that large. The official figures are 3 to 4 of gdp and they still have positive Interest Rates, 2. 5 or so, higher than that in some cases. Particularly, this reserve requirement ratio, the amount that commercial banks must keep in their deposits, it has come down a lot but it is still 11 to 13 , depending on whether you are a large or small bank. You broughtm glad up that transition that china is experiencing from an export led economy to one more focused on domestic spending. When you look at the other currencies in the asia region, they dont have that pole of domestic demand to rely on. They are a lot more exposed to the headwinds, but those have died down. It is kind of neutral. Nick when we look at 2020 and which currencies could do well, we are looking at chinas sensitive currencies, because when the facts change, and the biggest change is the trade outlook, it is significant in that around 25 of koreas exports go to china. In singapore, it is an open economy in general, so the world feels maybe not better but not worse. Softfect today, we got numbers for singapore in terms of industrial output from a month or two ago, yet the singapore currency has held pretty much steady. It is an indication they are paying attention to what is happening in the rest of the world and not as much as singapore. Scarlet industrial output dropping, a big miss. Lets talk about japan, because viviana was reporting about how the abe government is urging companies to pay their workers more to generate inflation. Will we get any . Nick probably not. It has been at the zero line for a long time, and given the inflation levels and japan over the last decades, it will be difficult to break the inflation psyche or lack of inflation psyche. They will be aiming for 2 inflation for quite a long time. Although we dont think the japanese economy will do we have aly badly, consumption tax increase that can be part of the offset by the fiscal package the japanese government is doing to dampen down the effect. If you are not seeing a burst of economic growth, which is generally what you would think would drive inflationary pressures, prompting Japanese Companies to raise their prices, it will be difficult to generate a sustained increase in japan. In terms of what would you consider to be a safe haven or one of the more orderly currencies in the region, it is probably the israeli currency. When you see these kind of global jitters, it does not affect the shekel as it might some other currencies. We do think there is some potential for modest weakness in the shekel because of the political situation, and also we Pay Attention to the central bank. One of the policy changes they are talking about is being more active in terms of Foreign Exchange. They are not upset, but a little unhappy at how the currency has remained as strong as it is. A weaker currency might help. Scarlet they need to think about currency war and how the president did this year threatened tariffs against argentina and brazil on their metal exports because they were devaluing their currencies too much, which is a different kind of situation than the European Central bank weakening the euro.
