Global news 24 hours a day, onair, and tictoc on twitter, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over 120 countries. Im Mark Crumpton. This is bloomberg. It is 1 00 in new york, 6 00 in london, 1 00 a. M. In hong kong. Im vonnie quinn welcome to bloomberg markets. From bloomberg World Headquarters in new york, here are the top stories on the bloomberg we are following. Heads of state from around the world are in new york for the United Nations General Assembly. We will dissect what is on the agenda. Former new york fed president bill dudley says money markets have calmed after lex weeks strain. However, he says there could have been more action. Mehlman, alk to ken global head of Public Affairs at kkr, about how successful the companys efforts have been in combating Climate Change. All that to come but first we have some breaking news. Boris johnson says it is time to do a new nuclear deal with iran. This on behalf of britain. Johnson speaking with sky news, said iran plainly carried out the saudi attack. That is the british news. Kailey leinz is here with us to take us through the market action. Kailey stocks are higher, even if it is just marginally. N the great after being lower really fluctuating all day as investors look for direction. Where you are seeing more conviction in buying is in the u. S. Treasury market. A lot of what investors have been trying to digest today is the growth picture. Take a look at the economic surprise or as for the u. S. And china. Pmi in germany. Manufacturing pmi surprised to the upside in the u. S. This morning. Speaking of downside, take a look at a few stocks lower today. Tripadvisor, all lower. Expedia and booking also lower. These stocks under pressure after u. K. Company thomas cook filed for insolvency. That is not a good sign for some of its u. S. Peers. Apple is higher marginally today. Bloomberg reporting apple will assemble its mac pro desktop in texas after winning some tariff exemptions on some key components. That is lifting the stock by about half a percent. Mcdonalds and nike higher by about 1 . We will get earnings from nike after the bell tomorrow. Vonnie kailey leinz, thank you. Former new york fed president William Dudley says money markets have calmed, after last weeks strain. With tom keener and Jonathan Ferro in new york. Fed has shrunk its thence sheet over time, cash balance is growing, now that the debt issuance is being resolved. As a consequence, the number of reserves has been shrinking. This is tricky because the Federal Reserve doesnt know how much Bank Reserves need to satisfy the new liquidity coverage ratio requirements. And how much demand is going to be generated by the fact that interest is paid on reserve. For years, there were plenty of reserves in the system, but now they are getting to the point where demand is not equaling demand supply, so if there is a shock to the system am a that could put work upward pressure. You work for years in the trenches of this with your Goldman Sachs market experience. Over to the new york fed, and you just said it, the fed does not really know. If the fed does not really know, does that potentially affect trust . Knew there was always a desire to demand for reserves but we could not observe that because there was more than sufficient reserves in the system. There was always going to be a point where reserves shrink to the point where we saw upward pressure on shortterm rates. When we reach that point, the fed we need to add more reserves to the system. That is what we saw over the past week. Vonnie that was bill dudley talking with tom keene and Jonathan Ferro. For more on those remarks, we have money market reporter alex harris. Repobut there was still a operation today. Still plenty of demand for the cash on offer. No . He shortage resolved, or in the shortterm, yes. 3, 6hen you think about months out, this is where people are very uneasy. We only have operations through october 10, including a few tw oweek terms. Until you get something more permanent from the Federal Reserve, maybe at the october meeting, this is far from unresolved. So many structural issues that need to be worked through. Not at the fedis right now, he was for many years. He seems to want to put out the message that there is calm. Do markets listen to the former fed official, even if he is probably responsible . Earou would keep on dudley. I think if you are listening to martinmer official, potter has been making the rounds, and he spoke of bank of america on friday. He was talking about, the new york fed probably needs to do some term repurchase operations, go in and do outright purchases of treasury bills, given how heavy supply is on the front end. When people are hearing what some simon potter are saying, they are attuned to that. They care very much with the former head of the markets desk is saying. Vonnie does it change the calculus for the next rate cut . No, because this is a front end issue. Where it changes the calculus, it is whether they do an adjustment to the excess reserves rate. If anything, we get another round of volatility heading into the meeting. Maybe an adjustment, but at this point, the idea is the fed is having its whatever it takes moment, and it will do what it takes to keep the markets calm, but more importantly, keep the fed funds rate within its target range. Vonnie alex harris, thank you. Cover and money markets and much more for us. World leaders and thousands of diplomats are gathering in new york for the annual u. N. General assembly. Plenty of geopolitical headlines. The showdown between the u. S. And iran will likely overshadow the meeting. That is when President Trump addresses the assembly. The iranian delegation will be in the second row. Just in sync joins us from washington. What are we anticipating on a President Trump tomorrow . The white house has said President Trump wants to paint a picture of authoritarianism against the freedoms that the u. S. Brings. We expect the president to speak about those themes generally, but of course in relation to iran specifically. I know you spoke earlier about the united kingdom, that Prime Minister johnson is willing to negotiate a new iran deal. I am sure that is something that goes in line with what President Trump has said previously, an indication that he may be winning over the european leaders he needs for his approach, hardline approach to iran. Vonnie today, he made an appearance at the climate speech. Not expected to arrive but he did. He didnt say anything but was he trying to show something to the world about his stance on Climate Change . I think this was a response to the criticism from some democrats and particularly Climate Change activists, who have been active over the weekend and today, to say that he is listening. He spoke to reporters and said that he was concerned with clean air and clean water. Of course, what climate activists want is a systematic policy to address emissions across the board. The president pulled out of the plot parent climbs agreement. There was not any signal that he is looking for a more ambitious agenda. Vonnie there were some suggestions that where would be an informal meeting between the iran delegation and the president. Then things got a little more frothy. Is there any hope that something will happen . I dont think it will happen at this meeting. Obviously, a lot of pressure on iran. It would not be a popular meeting with hardliners in the country, especially after the attack on the saudi oil field. Does not appear to be willing to make any concessions. President trump says that he is always willing to talk, sees value in that. It does not seem like the right forum for this to come together. Vonnie justin sink, thank you. I want to point out, President Trump is participating in a bilateral meeting right now with vonnie pakistans prime ministen khan. He was scheduled to meet with the pakistani president. Some headlines out of that meeting, he says the u. S. Will increase trade with pakistan, and is willing to mediate on cashmere. The president offering to pakistan is willingness to mediate on kashmir. Coming up, we are speaking with ken mehlman about the companys mission to combat Climate Change. This is bloomberg. Vonnie this is bloomberg markets. Im vonnie quinn Global Leaders are convening in new york city for the u. N. General assembly. Climate changes at the top of the agenda. Here in new york is jason kelly with a guest who invests in commercial solutions that contributes to the u. N. S Sustainable Development goals. With ken mehlman, who has a broad portfolio at kkr. Really looking after all of the bsg and stakeholder issues there at one of the worlds bestknown investment firms. A big week for new york city. Not just for climate but for sustainability, and it now feels like this is an investable fear. Tell us about it. United nationS Sustainable Development goals were established because there was a recognition that some of the bill is Biggest Challenges we face, Climate Change is an example. Another issue, as the population grows, how do we deal with waste , how do we make sure that water is plentiful and clean . How do we educate the workforce in a world of tremendous technological disruption . All need to that we help. So policymakers this week are talking about when they been doing. Inspireseen activists all of us to get involved, but we as investors and companies have a role to play, too. Many of these challenges are amenable to great investment opportunities. Talk aboutnt to those opportunities, but before that, have you felt pressure, encouragement from your own investors to go deeper into this area . We have. Our investors are excited about this opportunity from a number angles. We have invested 5. 2 billion in 32 companies through our private deck we strategies mostly, some in infrastructure strategies. We found we can get great returns if we identify the right problems that need to be solved. An example, food safety in china. Remember melamine and the tragedy that happened there . Happened, why that the supply chain across many other Agricultural Products were not where they should be. We made investment in that area and our thesis was food safety. We have done very well. Another thing we are investing in is water systems. We all know the tragedy of flight. Into many cities there is under investment in those water systems. Improve andsted to upgrade them and protect the people and the environment. Great opportunity for returns there, too. Jason are you seeing deals become more competitive, valuations going up . Ken it depends what youre talking about, but valuations are going up across the board. The key is, are you diligent about where you are investing . Our basic question, in every investment, we ask, is there an underlying market for this . Are there individuals, consumers, governments, corporates willing to pay for this solution . Solution,y, is this one, that is consistent with the u. N. s stgs, and is at a locally solvable problem . Jason talk about what we have heard from recent ceos around the world, saying it is not just about the bottom line, we are not just serving shareholders and they have been using the word that you been using, stakeholders. What does that look like in terms of maybe profits given up, or maybe some more holistic view of doing investment . Ken handled in the right way, it means alignment. In companies in a way that creates shareholder value, by allotting their interests with the interest of stakeholders, and a way that is beneficial for both. For example, if you look at the Industrial Companies in which ,kr has invested, the lead along with the ceos of those companies, have done a fantastic job of improving productivity by engaging employees more. Seven companies with 22,000 employees. We have produced half 1 billion a equity, in stock, so that big part of the hourly workers in those companies compensation is tied to company performance, and they can build real wealth. Basise seen a 400 to 700 point improvement in those companies. It would be journalistic malpractice if i had to have a table as the former chairman of the rnc, and did not ask you about this, 2020 election around the corner. How big of an issue is sustainability and climate going to be next november . Ken i think sustainability and Climate Change are huge issues. Politicians are often lagging indicators to where the world is. Americans and people around the world look and say, look at these incredibly aggressive storms we are seeing. Look at the number of thousandyear floods. Five of the hottest years in history are the last five years. People see that in their lives. In texas, the hurricanes they have received, the flash floods in the midwest, and they say we need solutions. I think there is an exciting opportunity for both parties to come together and say, how do we provide solutions . How do we take the power of American Ingenuity and our markets to deal with Climate Change . It is really important, and i hope they take the opportunity. Jason ken mehlman, we will leave it there. You have to talk about your work with the American Investment counsel next time you come back. Bonnie, back to you. Vonnie jason kelly, thank you for that. I want to bring you back to the President Trump speaking with pakistans Prime Minister. Trump says that he thinks he will win the nobel peace prize. He says that he should get it if it was awarded fairly. Before the meeting, imran khan had been blaming President Trump for derailing the peace deal, ending the indiakashmir question. Tonic ad, and i agencyBritish Travel crumbling, leaving thousands stranded across europe. This is bloomberg. Vonnie British Travel operator thomas cook filed for liquidation compulsory liquidation early this morning after rescue talks failed. The company ceased to operate overnight with all of its flights and bookings canceled. We have the story in london. K. D. , was this a manufactured failure on the part of the hedge funds . The hedge funds played no role in this actual filing for liquidation. Although they had threatened to push the company into administration, to some extent, you can say the hedge funds are lucky. The Company Already filed for administration on its own accord. Thomas cook was requesting a further 200 Million Pounds to continue operating. Investigators who have been investing that they could not go any further on that one, nor could the u. K. Government to bail out the company. For hedge funds that were set in credit derivatives, to see the company fail, they are lucky that the company did go down the administration route. Vonnie what happens to those who own the regular stock in the company . Shareholders will be wiped out in this situation. It is a very dark example of an ministrations, already falling for liquidation. There is nocan see investor waiting to come and rescue thomas cook. It will mean definite job losses for 21,000 people. Shareholders are wiped out. Some assets may be sold, but if so at fire sale prices. Any proceeds will go to creditors. Vonnie it is affecting Companies Across europe, subsidiaries, companies that worked closely with thomas cook. The u. K. Government is on the line for about 93 million to repatriate stranded passengers. How much will this end up costing the u. K. And european taxpayer . Hard to say but probably the millions of dollars. Thomas cook is a major company. They sought a rescue from the government, they thought they were too big to fail, the government had a different view on that. It will mean major losses to shareholders and have a knock on twoect two companies Companies Across europe. Vonnie thank you. Lets take a look at where we are trading now. We are in a range on the s p 500. The 10year yield, 1. 5921. The dollar index continues to strengthen. Up almost 2 , even after the area was downgraded by jpmorgan. This is bloomberg. Mark im Mark Crumpton with bloomberg first word news. President trump made a surprise appearance at a Climate Change summit at the United Nations General Assembly today. In the past, the president has questioned manmade Climate Change, at one point calling it a chinese hoax. Sunday, he denied he was deliberately skipping the event, pointing to a briefing he the houston area that he was concerned about Climate Change. Will doaders say they more to prevent a warming world from reaching even more dangerous levels. And as they made their pledges, they conceded it was not enough. Even before they made their promises, 16yearold activist thunberg, said, i should not be here, i should be back at school on the other side of the ocean. Struggled through my town had, which are empty words. And yes, i am one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extension, and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of economic growth. How dare you World Leaders say this is where we draw the line. Month, second time in a puerto rico is bracing for a major storm. Officials are closing schools and offices as Tropical Storm Karen Approaches the territory. Global news 24 hours a day, onair, and tictoc on twitter, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over 120 countries. Im Mark Crumpton. This is bloomberg. Shery live from bloomberg World Headquarters, im shery ahn. Amanda live in toronto, im amanda lang. Shery here are our top stories from around the world. Contemplatesard chairman. The and we speak to the chairman of fortnum and mason to talk about how the company is it faring in age of brexit. Returns to a vancouver courtroom as they talk about who is best suited to lead the confrontation with china. Amanda lets get a quick check on the major averages. Client action today, a bit of a mixed picture on the economic some signse u. S. , not tracking straight to recession. That is not the case overseas. Negative indicators in france, germany. We are seeing some interesting pockets of weakness. For the broader s p 500, real estate, consumers, tech giving some strength. Health care and communications are the weak spots on the day. Definitely saw a movie into bonds today. You can see, tech not helping at all. As we head into a decision from the u. K. Supreme court, we are watching the implied volatility on the u. K. Pound. Sterling to dollar. Above its average, the highest of the g10. Saidong ago, mark carney that this was trading with a volatility that was more like an emerging market currency. As we wait for that decision about whether parliaments suspension was legal or not, we have that volume on sterling. Shery Economic Data also coming out. U. K. Pmi, we knew that it was in contraction territory. We had u. S. Data as well. That beat estimates. But we also had some contradictory data coming in from the Service Industry sector, point to job losses or the first time in a decade. When it comes to manufacturing, the u. S. Has managed to stay in positive territory expansion, in yellow. The gloomy picture coming from germany, seeing its worst downturn and about seven years, with manufacturing continuing to slump. We know euro area manufacturing, in blue, is around that 41 level, so not looking great. Amanda attention is returning to Global Public markets. A string of Companies Set to price their offerings and debut their stock after some poor performance. How will these companies fare . With us we have abigail doolittle. Abigail you are right about that, a lot of ipos this week. New companies coming to market not just in the u. S. But globally. , they are ab inbev relaunching their ipo of their asian unit, expected to price this week and although not confirmed when, to raise 8. 4 billion. This would be the second biggest ipo of 2019, but half of what they were targeting earlier. Henlius, thekong, first listing in hong kong since july. In europe, team viewer, a German Software company, expected to be one of the biggest ipos in europe this year. Turning to the peloton in the u. S. , the home fitness company, pricing on wednesday. They are looking to raise as much as 1. 2 billion. Wall street is a little more skeptical. Talking about wework, the ipo that was supposed to happen. Reports are saying the earliest it could happen is october, last week, after being delayed on valuation and governance issues. And iposof governance in the last week, take a look at this chart. In white, the s p 500. The rest of we have these high profile ipos. It has been a very difficult time for all of these companies coming to market and that holding onto any gains. Shery thank you so much for that. Lets hone in on wework. That ipo had been delayed. Lets dig deeper into the issues surrounding the company. Our ipo reporter is here. Will adams human being but to keep his job . The board was supposed to meet today to discuss whether they wanted to keep adam newman as the ceo. He is the cofounder of the company. Superior voting right in the company as well, so he could do that to push the board away and continue his leadership. Whatever he wants to do basically, but the board is not being today. They are scheduled to meet later this week, although that has not been confirmed. He still has some time to make calls to the board and try to keep his job. There are a lot of interested investors, Bond Investors at under 8 yield. Brewings been some interest in what they know that everyone else does not. What will happen to this company if newman is pushed out but retains voting control over wework . Crystal the company has said they are committed to completing the ipo by 2019. The Company Really needs that money. There is some credit line as contingent to the ipo event, so it is in the companys interest and creditors interest for that deal to happen. Adam newman left the company, it is likely he would retain a role, perhaps as an advisor or some sort of capacity. After all, he is the cofounder and has superior voting rights. Softbankere does fallen all of this . Crystal they are the people who set the 47 billion valuation, the last private valuation that we were cap. Everyone is not questioning whether softbank overpaid or that. For that. We have heard the value is being scaled back, maybe now ill less than 15 billion. How softbank plays into this whole drama, he is reportedly behind this coup of pushing newman out. It is a big reputational hit for softbank. Crystal that is true, they have to your vision funds. They are still discussing how much investors will put into it. Investors in the first one are now saying they are reluctant to put as much money into the second as they did the first. In a way, softbank is also taking a hit from the drama. Areda also taking a hit potential other businesses coming to market. Is very wework specific, we know that from the concerns that were raised. How much spillover should we expect as investors reevaluate what they are willing to do in these markets . Crystal the ipo market is sometimes about sentiment. Yes, we work as an impact on that. But a lot of the problems around a wework ipo is wework specific. We see a lot of companies that have good profits, margins, and perform quite well in the ipo off the market. There are also the uber and l yfts who had not done well. It is a mixed bag. It is kind of cliche to say, but good quality will continue to do well in the ipo market. Amanda great to have your thoughts, thank you. Coming up, uncertainty remains for brexit. We speak to the ceo of fortnum and mason after this. How these politics are affecting business. This is bloomberg. Amanda this is bloomberg markets. Im amanda lang in toronto. Shery im shery ahn in new york. U. K. Prime minister Boris Johnson is in new york where he is Holding Discussions with european leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. With the countries Supreme Court set to rule on suspension of parliament tomorrow, there are uncertainties about how brexit will play out. One company eager to see how this develops is fortnum and mason, a 312yearold department retailer. Ewan venters, great to have you in the studio. Brexit a sense of how and the uncertainty surrounding what is happening there is affecting your business in the u. K. , especially, do you have any supply chain concerns if we see a no deal brexit . Business in the u. K. Is sound, doubledigit growth. Domestic that consumers and inbound consumers can help to bolster the business. 87 of what we sell is made in the united kingdom, so our supply chain is robust. Of course, there are concerns about champagne, wine, products that would have crossed the border. We have taken steps to improve our stock levels ahead of any potential departure at the end of october. Amanda what about as you continue to expand . I know you are opening up in hong kong, other global centers. How does the potential change with the eu, if at all, affect the economic expansion . Have been in business 312 years, and i think we will be around for a bit longer. With a good, strong brand, very eloquently outwardly looking across the world, whether it is Digital Sales in the u. S. , or physical locations in asia, south korea, japan, hong kong, and our new store opening up in hong kong. As long as a business like ours is looking to the world to export, it can prosper, even if things in the u k become tougher because of lack of confidence, uncertainty about what our role is within the european community. Shery you are launching in hong kong in november. Why now . We continue to see these protests. These decisions were made months ago. Shery you are not worried about what is happening in the streets, the slowdown in the economy . Talking to my team in hong kong, people are still going out restaurants. Life is continuing come despite what we see in the news. We remain optimistic. We are a part of a very exciting retail development. The main Shopping Mall has already opened. Some of those retailers are reporting record numbers. So by the time we opened up in november, we feel pretty confident. Shery its interesting because you see more stores and retailers closing shops, but you are expanding your presence. Why is that . It is a modest strategy in terms of openings. Everything that we have learned about millennials and generation z, people want that physical experience to support how they engage with your brand, and that includes physical stores. Whether that is stores, restaurants, those touch points are important to building an overall brand and overall experience. One of the thing that has been said recently about scott galloway, noted marketing expert, there are number of people who will not climb an escalator to shop. Yours is an older model of retailing. How are you keeping up with the changing ways people want to shop . Every trend has a reaction. Younger consumers are engaging in digital technology, shopping more online, social media, etc. , the experience of coming into a physical store of fortnum and mason, whether it is our flagship store, or greeted byyou are chandeliers, life slows down. People enjoy a cup of tea, a slice of cake. They may even be buying from our cookbook, which launched tomorrow, things to bake a cake. That is why retailers need to be forward thinking, giving customers an alternative to what the market may be telling them. Although you are still competing on a margin basis on similar products. Can you charge a premium because of those experiences . I think you can if it is valley for the money. Product,ut quality of authenticity, how the product is made. Of course, its about price. Ultimately, in a food business, its about taste and flavor. Shery what are the regions where you are seeing the most growth . Asia is important to us, but also america. In america we are growing in your present year on year. American consumers are really buying into the fortnum and mason brand, perhaps one that they are familiar with because of our heritage, our relationship with the British Royal family. If they are not coming to our story in london, we are a great value for the money at the moment, for tourists to visit. If they are not coming physically, they are certainly using. Com. Growth seen two of the across america, particularly here in new york. Amanda you mentioned much of your goods are sourced from the u. K. For those that are not, we have seen this amazing rise in pound sterling. How do you challenge that . That is the job of my Marketing Team to work with providers, and the benefit of having long time supply partnerships. We cannot be simply changing prices as rigorously as currency or the cost of goods demands, but because of those strong relationships, we can keep a healthy hand on price, insure we are offering value to our customers irrespective of their spending capabilities. Amanda thank you for being with us today, we appreciate it. Fortnum and mason ceo ewan venters. Cfo is back in court today battling a tradition. What it means for canada and chinese relations. That is next. This is bloomberg. Amanda this is bloomberg markets. Im amanda lang in toronto. Shery im shery ahn in new york. Cfo is back in a vancouver courtroom fighting extradition. The arrest has pushed canada and china at all with one another, is best tok to who navigate the conflict. When can we expect a court decision, and what happens until then, between bilateral relations between canada and china . The Court Proceeding could drag on for some time. Of arguments are slated to last until early october. Theite what is going on in vancouver courtroom, relations between chana china and canada are at their darkest since Justin Trudeaus father established automatic ties. As soon as she was arrested, newing through to the canadians in jail on National Security grounds, sentenced another two to death in drug cases, and halted granola and meet linux. Are worth about 5 billion in annual trade. So china has a big problem on their hands. The argumentems that her lawyers will make today is for disclosure around information sharing. She was detained under the guise of an immigration detention. It ended up not being that. How much can the Canadian Justice Department they have said they have given full disclosure. There may have been discussions on the u. S. Side. How much do you think she and her lawyers are entitled to see why she was detained . That is for the court to decide. This has been a political hot potato. Donald trump at one point publicly said that if he were able to secure better terms in a trade deal with china, he would be willing to waive that extradition request. Or halt proceedings, would put the trudeau government in a bind. The president seemingly politicizing a case that trudeau himself says must be governed by the rule of law. Canada has an action edition agreement with the states, but intends to abide by it. He has made the point repeatedly that there will be no political interference on the canadian side. Shery do we know what impact that could have on elections as mr. Trudeau has for a second term . Policy is really a deciding issue in canadian elections, but trudeaus conservative rivals are trying to paint him as all style and no substance in his comportment on the world stage. Trudeau has been an Ardent Supporter of further engagement with china but doesnt have much to show for it. His first trip to beijing, he hoped to start trade talks, but the chinese objected to his insistence on including strong labor and environmental regulations in negotiations. His first ambassador to china, john mccallum, was forced to ask for his resignation after mccallum said that ms. Mung probably has a strong case against extradition. Thetly after, he hired former head of mckinsey, a strong proponent of engaging with china. Canadasplays out in Election Campaign is still two to be determined. Still four weeks before ballots are cast. Amanda good to have your thoughts, appreciate it.
