Ride hailer to a group led by softbank. Implies a the deal valuation of 48 billion for uber and more than a billion will be invested. It makes softbank one of ubers largest shareholders and counts seats on the board. Global news 24 hours a day, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries. Lets take a look now at the markets. Hong kong and china, currently closed for lunch but heres how the morningading in session. This is the picture in and mumbai. Okyo back in half an hour. Time now for the best of bloomberg markets, middle east. [music] im cory johnson in for emily chang. This is Bloomberg Technology. Softbank c. E. O. Masayoshi son is about to add to portfolio. Uber investors agree to sell him stake. Great story here. And the Silver Lining for one of worlds most valuable. A look back at a year uber but wewants to forget, werent. More highlights and interviews, technology in the last year. I think months to happen. Heres what Masayoshi Son had to say about uber back in august. I think the way people use transportation and the lifestyle will be different from 30 years later, 50 years later. It will be very different. Autonomous car is definitely coming. Comes, thist stage business becomes even more important. Joining us now to discuss the news, bloombergs head of global technology, brad stone. Shira joining u. S. As well. Shira, this deal took quite a while for these guys to put together but also really suggests that uber is not what it used to be to the tunes of tens of billions of dollars. Yeah. Think you cant escape the fact that uber is essentially less valuable than years ago, uple of when it was valued at 69 billion, in the stock transaction, and now were talking about a 30 haircut. And yeah, you can make all kinds excuses that this is a transaction not from the company from its existing shareholders. But obviously its been a bad uber. Lus for and its clear that thats hurt the valuation of the company. Really shocking, when you look at that chart by our producers here of the show. Know, this also took a while to do. Who were the sellers in this deal . I like the 69 40. On but ill take get me out. We dont know everyone who has sold. Benchmark, an early investor. Venture capital firm. We dont know yet about travis who still owns 10 . But i want to add one thing to what shira said. A year of controversy but it was also a year of very justof ambiguous or even negative economics for uber. The company lost 4 billion in 2017. There was a belief in the company for a long time that they could raise money and kill all the little guys, and that just hasnt happen. Faces destructive competition in places like india, singapore and brazil. The deal can help alleviate some of that competition, because invested in these other companies as well. Very bigailed on a chinese investment. To me, it seems like they got out of that deal pretty good. But they also bailed on their c. E. O. , basically an entire suite, the ways that they ran their business, customers. Ppers from the seamless of the transaction, get in the car, get there and get out is gone. Almostuld describe it as like it was a year where the manifest destiny of uber to be a in raid sharing around the world is gone. That happened because of the happenedsy but it also because there were savvy investors out there like son and softbank that saw an opportunity for these other players. Was ubers controversy but part of it was market flood nothing the and propping up players like ola. Uber is not going to be the dominant player. I think part of that realization us here today, the fact that uber is taking a valuation haircut. Known me a long time. You know i like my conspiracy theories. One. E deposit that the last round of investors nota deal that they would get deluded in the future, that any future valuation would only be up. Thats why Masayoshi Son had to pay 1 billion at a high almoston while simultaneously paying a lot less at a much lower valuation. It wouldnt trigger that reissuance of even more shares to the last round of investors. I like your Conspiracy Theory. I have no idea if its true. I like everyone who likes my conspiracy deals. I like you too. I liked you before that. But it is striking here that, as it, their manifest destiny is not very clear and you can see it in the valuation. Yeah. Wonder, is if uber is no longer going to be this winner take all, what is uber . How big can it eventually get, right . Know its losing staggering sums of money. Its had to retreat from various businesses in parts of the world. And so if you invest in uber a thatears ago, thinking its going to go into russia and indonesia and africa and the Restaurant Delivery business, all these other places, and just competitor, that no longer looks like a sure thing. If itt is uber worth cant be successful everywhere in the world . The past, anin ipo, less obvious at the exact same moment, that the time from now until ipo is longer. Have stated they want to get to ipo eventually. But also, it gets simpler, the varying shares of stocks, the fact that shareholders who dont have a had moreney at stake votes, some of the early and the founder as well. Well, everything has been simplified in this deal, with the power for the early know, olders, you softbanks taking board, governance reforms. Company. S a simpler benchmark sued travis. Of these lawsuits go away. And, yeah, Dara Khosrowshahi that some of the pressure for liquidity is taken off the table with this deal. So i think hes got room to operate now. I want to change gears. We just had breaking news from apple. I want to get to you on this first. Apple admitting theyve got their batteries and what people have noticed is that it seemed like, as soon as available,ne was their old phone got worse. Apple sort of suggesting, yeah. That. Dnt just think thats happening. I mean, its always weird when apple apologizes and said did the wrong thing. Its not in apples character to say it was wrong. Basically, you know, theres this Conspiracy Theory for a long time that apple slows down to prod people to buy new ones. And it emerged in the last couple of weeks that, okay, the Conspiracy Theory wasnt necessarily to prod people to buy the latest and greatest iphones. But its been clear that apple indeed slows down the performance of older iphones when the battery degrades to the point where they might have these unexpected shutdowns. What apple said this afternoon was basically they didnt that fact, actively to people who own iphones and they should have been more clear it. T and also, look, its apples fault that they make their they make it very expensive to replace batteries on older phones. Company basically said theyre gonna change both of those things. Theyre going to communicate ander and make it cheaper easier for people to replace batteries so their phones have a longer lifespan. Theyre really, really sorry. Ha ha well, i mean, like with so many it wasnt theories, true but there was a shred of truth, right . People thought apple is the older phones to make you upgrade. That was never true. Shira justs, as said, they were altering the performance of the phone to batteries from shutting down. And in this statement, youre right. Its this im sorry you got mad statement. Some people dial it down. We apologize. That. A favorite of and then they discounted the price of replacement batteries, to 29. 50 bucks off next year on batteries. So its a significant move for apple to address, you know, what people basically felt, misled by these performance issues. There was not a total Conspiracy Theory, just partial. I know they keep a Little Museum of all the stock frauds of years past. They have the thing that was invented. Was it a total fraud . Have thisey did little device that was supposed to magically recharge your battery or regrow your hair or something. In this case, there was maybe misdemeanor. Not fully disclosing the lie. It wasnt the felony people forced planhis obsolescence but there was thatinly here something apple didnt communicate properly. Much. Nk you very brad, back in new york, thanks a lot. All right. Uber. Upl, sticking with uber, next, were going to talk to bill gurley, one of our uberses, about one of first investors. The state of the ride sharing changes already implemented. And Bloomberg Technology live back east, 2 00 on the west coast. This is bloomberg. Well, benchmark is one of ubers earliest investors. Role. Layed a big bill gurley stepped off the uber board earlier this year, but about the vocal company. Blorgs emily chang spokeergs emily chang with him earlier this year. I know through my own conversations with dara that hes getting good advice and help from travis. Look at the current situation, you know, i feel happy, relative to where we were, say, back in may or june. I think the entire board, travis, is excited about dara as c. E. O. I think hes doing an incredible job. Did a great job in interfacing with the regulatory bodies in london. It again in brazil. Weve just added tony west, who helped us hire. So i feel really good. Athink weve probably reached new level of stability and i look forward to where we are, going forward. Benchmark pushed for traviss resignation and took it so far sue him. You know, that stunned a lot of people. Why did it come to that . Resolve that in private . Yeah. Look, i think any venture capitalist, you know, hopes they can use persuasion to solve thats out there so this stuff doesnt kind of roll out onto the field like it in this case. This summer, things that uber had reached a place where, you we felt, along with, by the way, four other very large so people typically say benchmark but there was five including fidelity, who felt like all the constituents at uber were at action didnt happen sooner. So we did something unprecedented. Look, we get two questions quite frequently about this. One is i cant believe you did this, and the other one is why sooner . Ou do this and theres no overlap between those two things. Where wee in a place had to make a very hard decision. We, you know, after much reflection, felt we were on the right side of history. And at this point in time, i feel like weve got things to a place where theres a really success movingor forward. And so while i wouldnt say that year has been something that we enjoyed as a firm or would look forward to doing again, i do think we made the right decisions. Is there anything, bill, that think you could have done sooner, and when other Companies Look at this situation, what learn . They yeah. Look, i think thats a fair question. And weve already stated publicly we wish we could have moved sooner. You know, we dont were shareholders in all these companies. Unilaterally. So to a certain extent, you have to be successful at that persuasion element to bring everyone along. Would say ishing i that, you know, the excessive amount of capital thats been available to Silicon Valley has allowed a lot of entrepreneurs to run without much discipline, because if you if youre not running out obvious money out constantlyoure not being regraded and asked to come back to the table. Unique things is just how early the model moved to how unusualy and that was relative to everything else. And so if youre gonna move up, youre gonna grow up, if youre gonna mature, that involves not only being big and taking market share but putting in, you know, the right functions. Andgovernance and finance legal. And maturing as a business and things relative to human relations. So all those elements have to be present. You know, should we have seen it sooner . I think almost certainly yes. We got conviction along with these other shareholders that we needed to take action, we moved as fast as we could. Benchmark hired its first sara table,er, earlier this year. This amidst, you know, a string Sexual Harassment allegations that have hit the industry pretty hard. Thinkg a problem do you this is and what will it take to change . Look, i think there is change happening. I think there are two elements that lead to change. Constant conversation and awareness building, which is theening through all conversations that have been happening, including this one right here. So all those things move the ball forward. We are super excited about sara being on board. Made two investments, although i dont think either of them are announced. Shes you know, shes super competitive. So we think shes going to be an incredible venture capitalist. But every single data point helps. At katrina. Over 80 of the employees are female. Of the Management Team is female. Over 60 of the board is female. I found out this morning, she be the youngest female founder to actually take their Company Public ever. These success points and data points create role models that help bring everything forward. Benchmark capitals bill gurley talking to emily chang of bloomberg. Cory i am cory johnson, this is Bloomberg Technology. There are a lot of reasons to be suspicious of technology, whether it is fake news or stocking. But benchmark thinks there are reasons to be positive about technology, going forward. We talk about these arguments and some of the things ways you may fall out of love with tech. It is depressing with a whole bunch of reasons. The first place to start would be Sexual Harassment and gender in Silicon Valley. It is easy to forget this whole conversation around Sexual Harassment kind of started with a blog post written by an uber engineer, susan fowler, who complained about the treatment of women at uber. That led to the resignation of travis kalanick. You can argue a lot of the conversation that happened to then has been driven by the tech industry. That is one. The other would be the role of social media in misinformation. A couple years ago we were starry eyed about things like facebook. Cory and the release of twitter would lead to a terrific spring in a pressed societies and so on. What we see is quite the opposite. Russia and north korea have been able to use social media to spread of their oppression. Max we talked to people in Silicon Valley. Not as optimistic as it has been carried at some of it has to do, we have been in a period of growth for a long time. There is a feeling that boom has wound down. The earliest rounds are not happening as quickly as they were. You talk to people, they are not as enthusiastic. There is a feeling even among people who really believe in tech that maybe we need to think about techs role in society. Cory lets put on our optimistic hats, ones i do not wear. What about 5g . Max it is easy, especially in the way people think about are upset about the Net Neutrality rollback. It is easy to forget we have exciting things happening in telecom. , Consumer Electronic Companies and a wireless equipment manufacturers are really getting ready to roll out much faster speeds. 100 times what it is today. It is being tested right now. Verizon said they will bring it to a handful of markets next year. And really by 2020, just a couple years from now. You will never have to worry about slowdowns or bandwidth caps. Remember the days when people would go on vacation and they would come back with a 10,000 cell phone bill or your kid gets a hold of your ipad and crazy things happen . Thats coming to an end. The really exciting thing to me is some of these Wireless Companies really have a shot at putting pressure on the big Internet Service providers. Tmobile has said that they will have a wireless sorry, a competitor to the broadband companies, which could create more competition, which would hopefully be good for consumers. Cory youve also got an Interesting Development with commercial space business, sort of a pullback in investments in nasa. Youve got elon musk with spacex, jeff bezos with his efforts, Lockheed Martin with some interesting efforts as well. Then you have Companies Like orbital insight with better use of Satellite Technology for all kinds of interesting ideas. It seems space is an area where there is a lot of investment and room for excitement. Max people forget the Technology Landscape goes beyond the internet. It is true weve seen a lot of exciting ipos. Weve seen a lot of Amazing Things happen with some of these big internet companies, but for the last five years or so, there has been a lot of interesting stuff happening, semi under the radar. I dont think spacex, which is elon musks space company, is going to go public next year, but it probably could. Its business has been growing really quickly. Really, there seems like a lot of upside. They just had a very successful launch, the first launch of a both reusable rocket and reusable spaceship. They have another rocket, the falcon heavy, that they are getting ready to go right now. So, there is a lot of good news, i would predict, around space. Its something that hasnt gotten that much attention. People are getting more excited about this industry than they have been in decades, so thats pretty cool. Cory there are also some Interesting Developments in new media. We have spent a lifetime in media. Whether it is snapchat or i love it in your story on bloomberg. Com, you hype my new obsession, which is hq. It is like jeopardy for your mobile phone. Max theres a lot of handwringing. People in the media world have been talking a lot about how these big platforms, facebook and google, have been swallowing up all of the money and how you cant get anything going without being inside of one of these bigger companies. Here comes along hq. It is not on youtube or facebook. It is just an app. It is doing something that is totally novel. It is like a game show, except it is interactive. It has a feel to it that field new. It is possible it is a fad. It has been growing very quickly, though who knows how thats going to play out over the next few weeks, but just the existence of this thing gives me optimism that there is still innovation, creativity coming out of this sort of media Technology Landscape. Cory and also, as you point out in the piece, there you mention npr and their dominance in podcasts, not just because i have a podcast called coasttocoast, that is available for download, but more importantly npr is an old Media Company in a lot of ways, very dominant in this new media of podcasts. Max another cool startup that is tangentially related to this that i would also put in this independent media little boom is patreon, which is the payment end for some of these new podcasts. It takes the npr funding model and lets anybody do it. Weve seen some pretty successful podcasts. Cory, maybe you should consider it for yours. They generate a decent amount of revenue using patreon. There is stuff happening at all layers of the food chain that is new and kind of interesting. Cory thats my conversation with bloombergs max chafkin. Coming up, you heard me mention orbital insight. James crawford will join us. This is bloomberg. Cory from the movement of thousands of oil tankers to collecting data from Shopping Mall parking lots, satellites helping lead the way is orbital , insights. We talked about changes to the satellite business. First, i want to get to the notion of what you guys do, by way of an anecdote. When i was a hedge fund manager, i hired a Satellite Company to fly over an oil spill. There was an oil driller. I did not believe they were drilling their data looked fake. It wasld not get there, in the middle of a jungle in public, new guinea. In papua, new guinea. We flew a satellite over. But i had to wait a few weeks before the satellite would be in contact with the area. I got some good data. I didnt get everything i wanted. How does your business take that to the next level . James we take advantage of changes that go far beyond our business. The commercial space industry has exploded in the last five years. From our partners, we can get imagery of the world every day, premium resolution. Cory based on the width of this table james big things. We can get 30 centimeter resolution, which is more the size of your laptop, from other partners little less frequently, but its amazing imagery. Cory its not that you own the satellite. It is that you are able to contract with them to get all the imagery and then use technology to stitch it together. James we pay a rev share back to the satellite providers. We get it from the imagery from all the satellites and we put it together using ai. Cory it occurs to me that one of the things you are doing is allowing the Satellite Companies themselves, who know how good and bad their businesses are, it lets them leverage the effectiveness of other Satellite Companies and get a little revenue from that, too. James the Satellite Companies a lot of their bread and butter is mapmaking and selling to the government. But if you want to sell to a hedge fund manager, you have to have pretty frequent imagery. By stitching them altogether, we have much more imagery and a richer data set. Cory the notion of how understanding how successful a retailer is in almost real time. Give me an example. James just watch the cars. Look at them all, cl how many cars are in the parking lot. If its close to christmas, it is very full. If its 10 00 on a saturday morning in the summer, maybe its ok if its not full. We understand the patterns. We can look at the images and see whether retailers are doing well or not. Cory i printed out the maps and leaned over them, trying to figure out what im looking at. How many pipes are going down into a well and if that is changing. What a super interesting is, as if this wasnt crazy enough, is the way you are using Artificial Intelligence to do the work. What has happened there . James if you think about the retail example or oil example its really very large. , we are looking at 250,000 parking lots for retail, and thats way too many to have people look at. They would go crazy. We use ai to count the cars in each of those parking lots. Cory so, what did the users see . James a single number for all of macys. Cory how does it work . Do they go to a browser and type in how many cars are at macys . James if they have the right login, they can see macys this year versus same time a year ago or they can see home depot this year versus the same time a year ago. Cory thats incredible. Have you back tested this . James we do it continuously. We look at the reports from the 10k filings and compare that quarter by quarter and yearoveryear. It stacks up well. Its not a perfect correlation. People may go to the store and not buy as much as they did last year. Cory part of the equation that you solve for. As you look at this also, there are a lot of other uses, not just hedge fund managers, which is a pretty Good Business already. James we also look sell to insurance companies. We got early results using three different satellite constellations on the extended depth of flooding from hurricane harvey. In texas. Cory what did you see . James we saw water houston was creamed. We were able to get, by combining imagery, imagery at the maximum flood extent to see exactly where the water was, how close it was to oil tanks, where it was with respect to houses cory using sort of a policy by policy estimation . Or was it more they wanted to know the breadth of their exposure . James the real value is the breadth of their exposure, so they could see what kind of reserve they needed and how much trouble they were or were not in. Cory the notion of palm oil, deforestation, very clever usage. James this was great. People have used satellite imagery for quite a long time to look at deforestation. We train the ai to tell the difference between a managed forest and the virgin forest. We are able to see when a virgin forest is cut down and replaced with a managed forest, and that is what you are looking for in palm oil. You want to buy palm oil from an area that has been a managed forest for decades and was not just cut down. Cory this is an interesting story. I love the technologies that we are going to find completely new uses for. Great stuff, james. Coming up, mark cuban on donald trump and the presidency and a long view on bitcoin. This is bloomberg. Cory bitcoin resumed its slide of 14,000 per coin. The bigger cyber currency came from south korea, where they were stamping out speculation to shut down some exchanges. With theng spoke Dallas Mavericks owner and outspoken vanity fair owner, mark cuban. She asked whether or not trump would last four years as president. Mark there are three donald trumps. One trying to be a president , the trump that failed personally, and the one that trolls on twitter. He is fair game. When he is in Campaign Mode you ignore him. When he is trying to be president , hopefully he helps people around him. I have worked with 43 letter hascies and done things he no idea because that is what patriotic americans do. And you let him pretend to be president or do his thing. Emily youve made your political views very clear. What are your biggest concerns about this administration . Mark um, i dont know, that he just doesnt know whats going on. Its just not in him to make an effort to understand or learn. Possibly its because hes not capable. Possibly it is because he is not willing. I just dont think he has it in him. Emily does he make it through four years . Mark id say 25 chance, maybe 30 chance he doesnt. I would probably be willing to bet against him, not because hes going to do something crazily wrong, even though sometimes it seems like it. But i think its because he is oblivious to the institutions and government and oblivious to the laws and rules and he will do something and wont recognize that its an impeachable offense. Emily you recently bought a stake in twitter . Why now . Mark im a big fan of Artificial Intelligence, and i think they are making some good moves. You see the evolution of the interface on apps in the web. I think they are going in the right direction. Emily should twitter kick trump off the platform . Mark no. You can do that. Emily why not . mark politics are so tribal. Our lives are so tribal. In the realm of people who focus on politics, when you try to make a dramatic move, you increase the amount of tribalism. If you kick him off all the , trump fans are going to go bananas and that doesnt do good for anybody. Then he would just go to facebook or a website and you would have the same thing. There are 1000 ways to post digitally. Twitter happens to be the only one he knows how to use, but im sure even he can learn how to use facebook or something else. Emily twitter, gmail they are in the crosshairs of the Russian Investigation and fake news. What is their responsibility . Mark for broadcast television, if you broadcast an ad that says, you swallow this penny and it will cure every illness, you wouldnt be allowed to broadcast it. There are roles that prevent you from doing that. I think the same rules should apply to Digital Marketing and digital ads. You cant knowingly accept and take money from or broadcast false advertising. The same should apply to facebook and on twitter. Emily thats advertising. What about content . Mark its not content if you are trying to promote a specific agenda. Its marketing. Theres a big difference. Content can be fact or opinion. But, state it is opinion, or state it is reporting and have a reporter assigned to it. But otherwise, what we are seeing now, when they are using retargeting, that is advertising. In this particular case, they are posting it through the ad platform. If youre posting it through the ad platform it cant be fake , news its a misleading , advertisement. It is the responsibility of facebook and twitter to recognize, this is an advertising platform, we cant allow fake ads to be hosted on a platform. Emily last question. You told bloomberg you are considering getting into bitcoin. Have you done so yet and what do you think of people like jamie dimon saying its a fraud . Mark its interesting. I think there are a lot of assets that are valued based off supply and demand. Most stocks, there is no Intrinsic Value because you have no owning or Voting Rights come you does have the ability to buy and sell those stocks. I think bitcoin is the same thing, it is a function of supply and demand. Based on the some latest exchange because it gave liquidity. Pure bitcoin. I am also involved with ipos, because i think blockchain is a Great Technology for future applications. Just like streaming created multiple great companies, i think blockchain will, as well. I am involved with something called mercury protocol that i think will change the messaging using blockchain. Emily how big is your stake in bitcoin . Mark relatively small. Cory that was emily chang and mark cuban. Bloomberg lp is in partnership with twitter to produce a global breaking news network. The Video Network we call tictoc. A reminder that we are livestreaming on twitter right now. Told you, conflicts abound. technology. 5 00 on the east coast thats it. For now. This is bloomberg. The following is a paid program. The following is a paid advertisement for the threeweek yoga retreat. It was a big year for me. I turned 60. But about aging gracefully, there are some things about getting older that are just hard. All of the symptoms of
