This is as big as it gets. Is seen as a forum that is friendly to patent holders. Specialized ip courts in china have been a good place to sue. They are favorable to patent owners, they awarded u. S. Companies a victory in nearly all of the lawsuits filed. In addition, qualcomm had some disputes with china over appropriate licensing rates for some of their essential patents on 3g and 4g lte. They have the good grace of the Chinese Government having been approved. They are working with other phone manufacturers in china. They have goodwill going into this litigation. Emily dissenting qualcomm has the upper hand . Ian apple is an american company, earning a lot of money in china, but it is an indirect employer of chinese people. Do you want to see qualcomm workers laid off . Both sides have a lot of cards to play here as they make the case to beijing. Emily is there any precedent here . Have we seen a company besides qualcomm take this approach . Im looking at matt, and i said ian. T we have seen nokia take these companies will file in multiple jurisdictions and gain leverage in settlement talks. We saw qualcomm test out the intellectual property courts in handsetainst a chinese any factor, and were able to resultingeir patents, in a licensing deal. There is some precedents in the smartphone area, and in qualcomm litigating in china. Apple is completely dismissive, saying this is legalr tactic, another maneuver that will not mean anything. They have not even heard of these patents. They completely dismissed it, as you would imagine. Emily what does this mean for apple . The potential consequences are huge. Ian that is why i think the interesting analysis came from it. And analyst said they will not allow themselves to be cut off from production. They will pay qualcomm up front. Emily what do we see next . Matt the chinese courts are pretty fast, but it still takes the fastest may be six months until trial, about a year or so until the case is concluded. We are getting into the Third Quarter of next year, where qualcomms suit in the u. S. Will come to a close. Some of the litigation will have gone to trial and we will see those. Lts, it isre are resu quiet on the litigation front until the Third Quarter of next year. Emily tell us about that. Ian they are setting records everywhere. The European Union is still looking at them. We have the u. S. Regulators having a look at them. This really doesnt look good for them. The momentum is very poor. They need some kind of victory. It has been argued by some that nobody really has an interest in taking this all the way to trial. Nobody wants concrete presidence, because you dont cedence,n you pre because you dont know when you have to go to trial. Emily i know you will keep us posted. and and matt, thank you for joining us. They have made the decision to operating license. Transport for london said last month it had concerns about its safety and attempts to skirt regulations. The appeal allows drivers to continue operating in london while talks continue with cfl. The first hearing is not likely to take place until december, and further appears appeals could extend the process. Here is eric newcomer, who covers all things uber. Uber is still operating in london, but they have officially filed this appeal. What does it mean . Fact thatink the uber was alleged to continue to operate even as they lost their license was a sign that they will probably get to stay on the road. Emily also the Prime Minister has spoken out. Eric defended them. Tone. As changed the the new ceo apologized, said they had made mistakes. I think that appeased london and watched that process play out over time. I am sure london will try to extract or data transparency or other ways to supervisor uber. I think this process continues for a little while. Emily you have maintained that you dont think it is likely that uber will be banned in london. A are likely to recover ultimately. They are likely to recover ultimately. Eric their point is if uber is safe on the road, why shouldnt they be allowed to appeal . Emily what sort of reports are you getting from within the company about how the ceo is working out . People happy . Are people happy . That is front and center for him. He said to employees, it will be a hard six months. There are a lot of legal trouble ahead of them. There are five different criminal probes into uber right now. He knows it will be hard, but he is trying to bring people together and get the Company Moving forward. Emily we reported last week on the softbank deal that it was near closing, which means that if it closed, all former employees would be able to sell shares. Eric the board approved it. They approved the governance changes in the softbank deal. 1 billion for uber and 9 billion shares changing hands to new investors. What is happening now is the venture Firm Benchmark has this right of first refusal, which would allow them to buy into the deal at the price was low enough. Instead of just softbank buying shares, maybe benchmark could if it is cheap enough. What is happening seems to be a price negotiation that stalled at the deal a little bit, so it is being worked out. Highstakes. For theseertainty former employees who want to sell their shares come up or anyone who wants to cash out for any reason. Exactly, and the reforms are contingent on the deal going through. In every way, this needs to go forward. Emily explained the status of that governance reform . Roleoard proposition, the in the company. Eric they went to 17 board members. They changed to one share, one declining voting power in terms of shareholder votes. Officer of former the company if the former officer of the Company Became ceo, they would need to be approved i two thirds. A would make it harder to make travis push his way back into the company have too much of a role moving forward, while moving to a democratic voting structure. Emily this is contingent upon a deal . Eric that all needs to come together. Benchmark dropping its lawsuit against travis also hangs on all of this. I think people want to see it through, but there are billions of dollars at stake. Softbank in dragon air are looking to buy upwards of 9 billion worth of shares. That is a lot of money. Billion,he prices 45 it makes a difference. Emily i know you will keep us updated. Spokeerg surveillance with two men to get their opinions. It is a phenomenon. If you want to, we can discuss the specifics of that coin. The fact that it is not scalable, the fact that it is very anonymous, and there are mechanisms and ways to improve the functioning, but i think that many people who are talking about the coin talk from ignorance and from away of protecting myself from what i perceived to be competition. The thing about bitcoin is it is a generic name. There are new currencies that can be doing something. I got an email from jamie in new york saying dont let him answer that. [laughter] reporter what is your take on bitcoin . I am a bit cautious, because from has warned anyone joking about it. I dont claim to be an expert. I can see that a cryptocurrency like bitcoin, and jacob is right to say there are others, being right in the context and speeding up interbank transactions, i can see a utility in the Financial System for that. Or things like it can become a reliable store of value and replace other currencies, i am much more doubtful about. They are extremely volatile and uncertain. There is no mechanism that affects the supply of it. Response to aelf degree of volatility. In other words, there is a flaw. Those were our guests speaking on bloomberg surveillance. Coming up, hollywoods Sexual Harassment saga continues. This is bloomberg. Emily amazon is said to be making a push into sportswear. The company is enlisting some of the biggest athletics apparel suppliers. They previously ventured into fashion, Offering Office clothing, jackets, and dresses. However, pushing into active wear would bring fresh competition to some of the worlds biggest brands like nike, lululemon, and under armour. Meanwhile, out of amazon studios, the head of the film and tv unit has been suspended due to allegations of Sexual Harassment. He is accused of making inappropriate advancements to a female producer. The producer on one of amazons most popular shows, man in high castle, says that she harassed her at an event. This is after similar allegations led to the firing of Harvey Weinstein. Televisiontwo projects in the works with weinsteins company. Our reporter is joining us in l. A. To wrap up these headlines. Another actress, rose mcgowan, playing into this story. What do we know about what amazon new about him and when knew about him and when . We knew allegations had been swirling for a long time. We knew there were stories in the works, but amazon managed it at bay. In august or so, the tech news site published a story about tim masters, who traditionally rights for the hollywood theyter, and it turns out and other outlets decided they were not able to publish it. Part of the problem there were no women on the record accusing him of inappropriate behavior. After the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the allegations against him, they felt emboldened and went on the record with the hollywood reporter. Hollywood had to of known something because roy price is a high executive there. How much people knew and when, we are still figuring out. Amazon acted pretty swiftly. Given all thee, controversy surrounding weinstein, they did not want that to rub off on them. Emily at the same time, rose mcgowan the actress says that she told reuters that she was roy price that she was sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein and asked the company not to work with him. Bezos, een, she told jeff the the change you want to see in the world. Stand with truth. Tell us how was mcgowan fits in here. Lucas what you have seen in the case of Harvey Weinstein and a lot of these men who were of predation,rs harassment, you had a lot of isolated incidents. If someone stitched them together, it would have been clear that if all these allegations are true, the person should lose their job, they should potentially be prosecuted. But all of the incidents were one off. You had rose mcgowan telling roy price. You had all of these stories come out after the original whoies, adding more women said that harvey had done things wrong. You had Gwyneth Paltrow come out in a separate story detailing what happened to her. There is a long track record of a legend abuse. Long to cometoo out. Fortunately, you had women who were brave enough to come out and share and reporters who stuck with it and found the story. But in the case of Harvey Weinstein, this goes back at least two decades. Emily and yet, this was an open secret, at least about Harvey Weinstein in particular, and it took decades to come out. Where do you see the chips falling . What are people saying in hollywood . Lucas you have a lot of male executives who are looking over their shoulder, wondering. We know that Harvey Weinstein and rowe price roy price are the only two executives throughout Corporate America who have done something wrong or have been accused of doing something wrong. I have to imagine that more will come out in the coming days and weeks. This is not going away. This has been a constant troop and story in trope and story in the Silicon Valley as well. You have Companies Run by men who for one reason or another believe they are able or empowered to act improperly. Most people in the entertainment business believe that roy price will probably lose his job. We have not heard anything to that effect from amazon, but he is suspended indefinitely. In the case of harvey and roy price to what you said, harveys savior was somewhat of a life savior. Life behavior, a secret. Nown i spoke with someone who has worked with the Weinstein Company for years. Everyone knew he was an abusive loss, at least verbally. They heard rumors, but nobody had the concrete evidence. You need more good reporting to prove what people have done. Emily and women who are willing to come forward. Lucas shaw, thank you very much. We will continue to follow this. I am emily chang. The countdown to the start of the nba season is on. On october 17, defending champs the Golden State Warriors square off against the houston rockets. This season, the warriors will be debuting an updated look. Any will sport the name of internet based company with the companys local and a small patch on their jerseys. Rakuten is becoming the official ecommerce and video on demand partner of the warriors. Joining us now is the Golden State Warriors president and coo rick welts. Rick, thank you for joining us. Why rakuten, and why put this logo on their jerseys . Rick this is the first year they are allowed corporations on jerseys. It was not a noncontroversial step. I think every team is trying to be careful about selecting a partner. We had a lot of Companies Based outside of the united states, which i think is a reflection on where the warriors are right now as a brand in the world. Rakuten was not the most lucrative offer that we had, but to know theetting company it was most closely aligned with how we operate the business. As an affiliating Marketing Partner how does this , expand across multiple realms . Rick i think this is a real opportunity for rakuten. If youre in asia or europe, you know much more about rakuten than american consumers. I think that is part of the strategy, to attach to a company like rakuten that has a very big global footprint and use the popularity of the warriors to get americans more familiar with the kind of things that the company does. Emily how much of a trend is this becoming . Will the nba be taking pay from taking a page out of nascar with ads on jerseys . [laughter] rick i have a feeling you dont think it is a good way to go. I think it is really interesting to watch sports around the world and see how sports and the economic side of sports grows. The idea that you would not have a corporate sponsor across the chest of a jersey in europe or other places in the world would be a head scratcher. Why wouldnt you do that . Americans have a much more careful approach and i think we have to see what the reaction is. I think it is inevitable that there will be more of this across the league as time goes on. Emily speaking of International Business, steph curry has surpassed kobe bryant for jersey sales in china. You guys came back from shanghai. Talk about the reception of the warriors in china and the popularity of a guy like steph. Hard to putreally into words until you have experienced it. We went four years ago with the lakers when they had kobe bryant. I think we were the other team. We had not achieved the success we have today. I think it was a real wakeup call to our players and team of what the opportunities are for individuals and teams in china. Since steph curry, kevin durant, Klay Thompson have all been taking yearly trips on their own time during the summer, and what we saw with the combination of what we saw in combination of that and the popularity of the team right now, the only thing i can equate it to, i was looking to travel to barcelona with the dream team in 1992 and it was the same thing. Hundreds of people outside the hotel 24 hours a day hoping for a glimpse of the player everywhere we went from airports to events. Hundreds of thousands of fans trying to get a glimpse of the stars. Emily how would you describe the state of and the potential of your International Business . Rick i really think is the i think it is the nbas advantage compared to the other traditional american sports. I do not think most americans really understand the scale of what the rest of the world calls football we call soccer around the world. Basketball is the number two sport in the world. We have a blueprint Going Forward that i think would make you very bullish on the international future of the league. 300 million chinese play basketball. But we have a different model than soccer because every kid who grows up in buenos aires wants to play for his club team, then the national team, the world cup. Every kid growing up drilling a basketball anywhere in the world want to play in one league, they want to play in the nba. We have 25 of our players from outside the united states. The International Distribution of our television creates an unbelievable opportunity for the nba to grow internationally Going Forward. Emily you guys are working on a new arena down the street. What sort of hightech features can fans expect . Rick it is not just an arena. It is a 12 acre site, including Office Buildings and 29 different retail mostly restaurant places, a plaza, a 5. 5 acre park. It is going to be a new Gathering Place for the city of San Francisco and the entire bay area. We want to have the very best Technology Available in a sports environment there, but we are not hanging our hats on that as why you should come. Because technology for technologys sake for me is like a false promise. At some point, there will be something newer and better. Technology that enables the Fan Experience and improves the guest experience, then that is valuable. We talk about the guest experience. It is empowered by the technology, but it is not the technology in it of itself that makes that. Emily youre the second team ever to use a personal seat license, which means that to get which means a season Ticket Holder can buy the same seats year after year. Any thinking that this would discourage fans from buying tickets . Rick first of all, we have a very different program. We actually have a way where you can get the money back to the investment you make. At the end of 30 years you get all your money back. But we have to pricing in a way where people can afford it. One of the reasons we have been so successful is because of our audience. We actually expect a great majority of our seasonTicket Holders to follow us from oakland to San Francisco. All of our season tickets will have membership associated with them. But the game tickets will not. We will actually sell fewer season tickets in the new chase center then we are selling at oracle. We have to be smart the way we price. But i will remind you this is the first time in decades that a project of this size has been entirely privately financed. There are no public funds going toward building this 1. 8 billion project in San Francisco. The reality is this is something we have to do, but i think were doing it in a way that it can stand as firmly as possible. As firmly as it can be. Emily you have some tech owners part of the team. Current tech people part of the team. How is the team itself using Tech Innovation to up the game . Rick i think most of it applies to the game itself. The level of analytics being applied to playing the game of basketball right now has grown exponentially over the past 12 years. We have technology in our practice facility that tracks the players. We have biometrics that we can use now. I think were learning how to implement all of that on the court to try to improve team performance, and that is a work in progress and will always be a work in progress. But in terms of our affinity toward at least having the data, we want to have it. How we deploy it, how we use it and whether we can get a competitive advantage, i think that is what were all try to figure out right now. Emily rick welts, coo for the Golden State Warriors speaking with me. Well be talking about the outlook for the warriorss upcoming season. And the National Anthem protest. This is bloomberg. Emily the National Anthem protests are coming out of the nfl and have sparked a National Debate among other sports leagues across the u. S. The issue of players rights and proper ways of protesting coming to the forefront. Still with us is the Golden State Warriors president and coo rick welts. This all started with steph curry saying he did not want to go to the white house. The president , insulted tweeted , that the team was no longer welcome. President trump wasnt happy about kneeling during the National Anthem. The nba commissioner has now said to the players, look, you guys have to stand. Where do you weigh in on this . Rick well, i do not think im in a position to comment on what other leagues and teams are doing. I think the saddest part of this is because the messages have become very muddled. A lot of people are putting their own spin and their own take. The players may be trying to express something and people are putting a different spin on it. I think it is kind of sad. Now, we have lost any kind of focus on it. As far as our team goes, we were not able to have a meeting to decide what we wanted to do in the white house. As you said, we were uninvited before we had an opportunity to discuss it as a team. That is just the way we work. The warriors organization, everyone has a voice. When we make decisions, we do it together. I think we are very proud of our players. You can talk about what these players are. They are professional athletes. But you need to talk about who these players are too. And we are blessed to have a roster full of some of the most thoughtful, articulate athletes in sports today. And anyone who things all they who thinks all they think about or all they should be allowed to talk about is playing the game of basketball i think really misses the point. Sports and politics throughout history have always intersected and always will intersect, whether we like it or not. And i think we are very proud of how our players have represented their own views in a very thoughtful way and we will continue to encourage them to do that in the future. Emily the season starts next week. You have got your first game. What have you sent to the team about what you expect for them . If they want to make a statement during the National Anthem, is that ok . Rick the players have not brought anything for word. Anything forward. That is the way the warriors work. I think youre right. Theres one difference between the nfl and the nba. The nba has a rule that says players should stand during the National Anthem. I think our players have a lot of ways to express themselves because they are such highprofile individuals when they are off the court. I think they have ways to get their opinions out there. And i think they will decide what they want to do in the team and the team will embrace whatever decision they make, understanding that nba rule nba does have a rule in place. Emily where do things stand between the team and the president . Rick as far as we were concerned, we got the message that morning. We have not yet decided what the team will do. We want to do something to celebrate our championship. Supposed to this is be about, when the team wins gets to go to washington. This is about celebrating. We will do something to celebrate our championship when we are in washington, it just will not be at the white house. Emily next week, first game, can anyone beat the warriors . Rick the more i read, the more i have to believe it is just not possible. Unfortunately. I have been doing this my entire life and you can go back any season and read the preseason predictions and find out how many mistakes people made at the beginning of the year. We are healthy and thrilled that we have the core of our team together. We are incredibly optimistic but right now we have not won a game. It would be premature to decide where we would be at the end of the season. Emily i can think of a few people who are rooting for you guys. Rick welts, thanks so much for joining us. Resident and coo of the warriors. Up, southbanks vision fund is the gift that keeps on giving. Theyre investing on a mapping Location Software for developers. We will uncover the details next. This is bloomberg. Emily facebook is making it easier to eat. A new feature allows you to order meals through a thirdparty Delivery Service or directly from restaurants like chipotle. The social Network Users will stay on the site longer instead of logging off to place orders elsewhere. According to some analysts, it is also a way to gather Customer Data and stay in contact with consumers. Earlier this week, mapbox announced a deal with vision with a vision fund. It raised almost 100 billion this year and is blanketing the tech sector with this money. Map box is a location platform for developers. Joining me now is the ceo. Your maps Power Companies like airbnb and snapchat. What do you offer that is different from google . Eric we let the developer go in and we put the map is either act also customize it. For example, snapchat. You get to see an entire emoji world. Their designers made it custom and you see heat map of where heat maps of where people are going. If you are going out tonight, if you want to see the bar area, you will zoom in and be able to see all the snaps. Because the map is flexible, anybody can go in. On the other end of this drum, the spectrum, weather data. Different but you have to be able to have that live weather data stream into the map. Emily that is a lot of money. What the you intend to use that for . Eric number one is for automakers. Emily automakers in their Navigation Systems . Eric yes. I want to take the same designs tools that snapchat was able to use and give it to people to design great cars. If designers in detroit can take control of the dashboard, that will be awesome. But also, auto for tomorrow. Those are maps for robots. Being able to have really High Definition maps that help the align is athe car huge investments. Emily what kind of investor do you expect them to be. Are they going to be a vocal presence . Do you have mandate for them . Eric the reason we chose softbank is because they are longterm. You are reading a lot about them today. When you raise this much money, you are making a long play. With softbank, i wanted to have a bench around me with experienced people to build a longterm company. These are people who have been there, done that before in building huge global companies. And that is who we are bringing with us. Emily what are the risks associated with taking on that kind of cash . I mean, that is a lot of money. Eric oh yes, proper. Capital, you do not want to overcapitalize. Number one, we have been very capital efficient today. We have only raised outside capital twice. We have been really scrappy with the resources we have. And we built a platform that allows us to accelerate into longterm plays, but also immediate plays like ar and vr. To take the presence global now. Emily obviously, there are wildfires raging up in northern california, sonoma county. Not far from here. The air quality is horrible. You said earlier that fires in mapping is a new trend. Eric just before i came on air, i saw some of the imagery coming out from digitalglobe. The largest Satellite Company in the world. They have sensors that can see through smoke. Theyre starting to open up the data for other developers to publish out on the web so you can actually see because people do not know where their house is relative to the fire. These are showing up on twitter. See thisw are you mapping world shaping up in terms of big Companies Like google and amazon and smaller Companies Like you . Eric we are about to be a lot less small. There are only four sets of global data in the world. You mentioned google. Tomtom also. And then there is us. We are able to collect over 200 million miles of data a day and we are able to do that because of all of the sensors. Anytime you are using mapbox, we backetting aggregated data and updating and putting in new roads, showing the speed of the roads. We are mapping the world live with that kind of data. Emily we will keep our eye on you guys. Eric nderson, gunderson, thank you so much. Great to have you here. That does it for this edition of bloomberg technology. We are Live Streaming on twitter.
