All that in the next 60 minutes. Julie hyman is here. Julie we were on the air when they got those headlines from north korea, that the foreign minister from north korea said President Trumps comments over the weekend about to a declaration of war. Stocks have taken a leg down and have done really recovered. This is slightly unusual because most of the rhetoric coming up over the past two months has not seen a reaction from stocks, however, the word war has not really been bandied about. We have seen the nasdaq in particular taking a hit, down 1 . It had already been the worst performing of the three major averages. In terms of other assets, are we seeing investors be riskaverse . Yes, indeed. U. S. Treasurys going down by three basis points. Gold catching up a bit, up half a percent. The dollar euro are lower against the japanese yen. Vix still below 11 at this stage. Elsewhere, we are looking at the continuing fallout from the echo equifax hack. And analyst has said that this progress and motivate customers to switch back to cards. Seeingoned that we are the tech group into the worst today, the nasdaq. Apple is a part of that story. The commentary on the initial sales of the iphone eight, even though apple has not released the numbers. Perhaps some weaker demand. That is down and many of the suppliers are taking a hit today. Vonnie thank you. Shery turning to an important subject we have covered closely on bloomberg, diversity in the workforce. Expertrg technology emily chang is standing by with one of the most recognizable figures in this discussion. Thank you. joining me now is ellen pao, author of a new book, cofounder of project include. So great to have you. Thanks for joining us. Its been five years since you sued kleiner perkins, two years since you lost. A few days since you are out with this new book. You writes, why did this, why rehash the details, what is your goal . Was havingrt of it so many men and women tell me how much my story had inspired them, gave them comfort in the experiences they had, how they had connected with it. I wanted to give them all of the facts, the whole story, see if i could help other people through the writing of this book. Give ane, to also inspiring ending to what was a pretty terrible experience, that you can get through all of this and continue and have a career and move forward, and also try to change tech and the business world. Emily i know you said you have not regretted it, but its been an emotional process. Where are you now . The kapor center, i am the chief Diversity Inclusion officer. I also do some work at their Venture Capital fund. Its been great to work with ceos and founders on bringing diversity and inclusion into their companies. We have a founders commitment, where founders we invest in have a formal commitment to diversity and inclusion for their teams and cultures. It has also been great to continue to do work with the seven cofounders of project include. We started this nonprofit to push diversity in tech and inclusion. Been working with ceos, gathering data to try to move the issue forward. , that you wrote an oped although all has not changed, the one that has is acknowledging the problem of sexism in the industry. If you filed your seat today, do you think the outcome would be different . I dont know if we would be here if i had not filed suit, so its hard to say. We have change the conversation. No longer are women forced to defend themselves. Its a much easier experience for people to say ive been harassed, discriminated against. People believe it. It hadnt been for all of these women coming forward after me, where we would be today. But i think somebody soon now has a better shot. A rash ofhave seen Sexual Harassment stories in , hasre capital, uber, sofi any of the surprised you . I think most people who are familiar with the highest levels of tech and Venture Capital have heard the stories. Whats been surprising is that so many people now are coming forward to talk about them. It started with a bunch of women who came forward in the last few susan seller coming out with such detailed and specific blog posts. And her being accepted, not being taken down, its open the door for people to come forward and change the conversation. Emily susan fowler catalyzed the investigation into uber, Travis Kalanick resigned. What do you think once a wrong at uber . I dont know the details, but what happens in companies, you get this culture, you want to be harddriving, you want to push and break all the rules. That ends up not being limited to the business side, it ends up going into the personal side, your interactions with employees , your peers, people who report to you. You think the rules do not apply, and you do what you want. That ends up breaking down into illegal areas. Emily what responsibilities do 4 i dont know what it is letting the bro culture run wild . I think they have a huge responsibility for leading Venture Capitalists run wild. Have theroblem is, you fox guarding the hen house, you have people who are who do not have clean hands who are trying to manage people and tell them, youre not supposed to do these things, when they are doing them themselves. As a board member, you have a huge responsibility to the employees of a company, shareholders, to make sure the within theoperating bounds of the law, building a culture that will help them be is diverse and that and inclusive, because we know that generates better products. You go into incredibly fine detail into the boys environment that you experienced at kleiner perkins, not just sexist jokes but racist jokes as well. If the culture is that broken, can it be fixed . I dont know if the bigger companies, the older funds can actually be fixed, but working through project include, the there are a lot of founders and ceos committed to diversity and inclusion and want to build teams that include everyone, that are tied to the community, tied to their customer, that are going to build the best products. I have a lot of hope because i think the next generation of companies that are successful will have this commitment to diversity and inclusion, and will be inclusive across all of their activities. I dont know about these funds that have been around for a while, talking about lowering the bar, finding that next white, male nerd. How do you change that attitude . Emily you are referencing a comment that mark morris me to me a couple years ago a couple years ago. Sequoia, apitals like one partner, and recent horowitz, no women partners. Do you think these firms will be surpassed if they still have the best returns, reputation . I know a lot of women and people of color who will not meet with them, because they dont think they will be treated fairly. Language,k at the lowering the bar to bring in people from different groups they dont think that women or other groups are actually equal to the men they typically invest in. How do you let somebody like that invest in you and inspect expect to get the same outcomes as other people they are investing in, or as you would get with a different investor who believes you are capable, likely to succeed as others . Emily ellen pao, author of reset. Thank you for joining us. Back to you in new york. Shery thank you, emily chang, with ellen pao. Vonnie lets check in on the first word news. Emma chandra has more. Vonnie im vonnie quinn. A busy week ahead for washington. President trump and Republican Leaders plan to release the tax framework. Meanwhile, republicans are still pushing a last ditch to topple the Affordable Care act. Sahil kapur is with us from capitol hill. First, when do we get final figures on the tax, actual, workable bill that can be shopped around . Sahil we expect to get something wednesday. It will reflect what Republican Leaders in the house and senate have agreed upon. I would not expect a detailed proposal, no legislative language. This will be a big framework which will form starting point for committees in the house and senate to start crafting their own bills. They will likely go their own ways on some items. We will look at probably individual rate cuts, new top rate of 35 instead of 39. 6 , passthrough rate of 25 , and a new Corporate Tax rate they are aiming for, about 20 . These are all a tall order put together. Very difficult to raise this kind of money to make these permanent. Shery will this be enough to satisfy the House Freedom caucus and move forward with the budget . Sahil that is one of the main reasons they are putting out the framework. The House Freedom caucus, a group of about three dozen conservatives in the house, they are demanding to see some details before they agree to greenlight a budget resolution that will unlock the procedure to begin this tax legislation. Watch. Ll be critical to i dont know if there will be in details to satisfy them. I think we will probably find that wednesday. Of holdouts, ing lets talk about rand paul, and whether there is a way for him to support the Health Care Bill. He says potentially if the amount of money was brought down by half, there might the. Should he be one of the holdouts that could be won over . For a he has been a note while. I dont see how he could be won over. His demand to cut the size of the block grant and have is the sort of thing that will send moderate Senate Republicans fleeing. You will not win Lisa Murkowski or rob portman if you cut the federal funding in half. Their states rely on things like medicaid. Ohio, west virginia, you have a big Opioid Epidemic problem. The senators won allow federal funding to try up on that. Revival ofd we see a bipartisan efforts by gop senator Lamar Alexander and patty murray . Sahil they were negotiating before the bill came up, the reemergence of the bill has scuttled those efforts. Democrats are saying come back to the table. There are a number of republicans that want to move on from the repeal and replace effort. They want to begin bipartisan talks. Certainly plausible, but the question is when. Politics inside the Republican Party are pretty lethal about doing anything that preserves aca. Vonnie sahil kapur, back in action this week. Gathered today in colorado to discuss industry challenges amid growing pressure on the spot rise of the precious metal. Danielle bochove is standing by with the ceo of the worlds secondlargest producer. Thanks very much. Gary goldberg joining me now, ceo of Newmont Mining. When we spoke in july, you are considering hiking your dividend. You said it would be to attract etf investors toward your stock and maybe delinking from the price of gold. Is that still on the table . Great to be here. We are still assessing it. We are going through our budget process for 2018. As we go through that, we are look what projects we have in our pipeline. He done a great job getting our debt paydown. We dont have any major payments coming up for a while. It will be in december that we will come up with our guidance for 2018. With that, we would provide an update on our dividend policy. We are looking at the options. Is tole if the purpose lower investors away from etfs, does that suggest you are more willing to protect the dividends, even as prices are falling . Today, we are paying about 18 dividend yield. When we look at what our potential is to increase that, attract other investors, today, if you own an etf, you can zero dividend. Right now we should be attractive, so reaching out to those investors and others you might like not only a good quality gold company, but one that can pay a consistent dividend. Danielle Western Australia announced that it would hike the gold is aboutf 1200 an ounce, a 50 increase in the royalty. You are a major player in Western Australia, what does this mean for you . Process withthe our team on the ground in australia, talking to the labor government that has proposed a change, despite the fact that they promise not to change it. They have suggested a change. We want to followup with them and make sure they understand the impacts. When you look at the Western Australian industry, there is only one operation longer than a 10year mine life, and that is us. Getting the facts across is really what we are focused on. In terms of the impact on newmont, we have run the numbers. A 15 it would be about million impact on our operating cost. 20 an ounce for those operations, so not insignificant. We want to make sure people understand the facts clearly before they make these decisions. Danielle you own one with barrick, and boddington. Is the royalty move end up where it would affect your decisions in Western Australia . We would have to look at where we invest around the world. Danielle i was talking to , in past years, you have made no secret of the fact that you want to buy barricks state. Does that still hold given the royalty news . We are still interested if it can be done at the right value. Potential future for the asset there. We would like to have the other half, if it can be done at the right value. Danielle is the value changed by the royalty agreement . It does affect the value. Danielle that doesnt sound like you are getting any closer together. You have a different idea of what this acid is worth. Im not sure where they stand in the process today but i remain in this interested if it can be done at the right value. Danielle you have a robust pipeline of highmargin projects, do you have enough cash flow to fund them all . Im emma chandra. This is bloomberg. Shery thank you. M a volume is not as robust this year as last year, but it is still pretty solid across the board. Solid yearore than a for citigroup, from an advisory perspective. They are currently in the tables behind Goldman Sachs and morgan stanley. Citi has not been as high as third since 2004. Alex sherman is with us now alongside the citigroup head of m a mark shafir. Citi lets get right to it. Before we get to the great performance this year, tell us about the year in general, have you been surprised with volume or activity . Ive been surprise the m a market has been as resilient it has been. Valuations are very high. At the beginning of the year, we were thinking about the trump trade, hoping to get tax reform, legislation around infrastructure. None of that has panned out. We have the north korean issue, a number of other things. We are flat on a run rate cases compared to last year. Given how strong the Fourth Quarter was last year, our expectation is the volume will be down your take 10 . Still, a pretty good market notwithstanding. One of the issue that you allude to, not specifically, regulation. Outstandingll this question of how tough the Trump Administration will be on deals. Lots of uncertainty around that. We may see tmobile and sprint announced test that. Or is maybe some uncertainty working in your benefit because people involved in that deal may say, we dont know, so lets give it a try. A couple years ago, we knew, and the answer was no. Possible uncertainty could see a few deals in the next couple of months . Is hard to predict, still a lot of stopping that needs to be done. We dont have an enforcement chief at the justice department. Relative to what we expected out of the obama administration, all things being equal, it would be a better revelatory environment. Having said that, we look at what has happened with chinese deals. In summer specs, it can be tougher. There is a lot of uncertainty but there is still hope that it will be more business friendly, m afriendly environment in this administration. Alex has the lack of hiring been an issue at the compan ies . It is taking longer, the decisionmaking that you look to see, it is a bit static at the moment. Hopefully that gets better. It is still pretty uncertain, in terms of the environment, but the expectation is it will get better. Alex it has been a while since you have done so well. Granted, we have one more quarter to go yet, so no victory left yet. But why have you been so good this year, and as you look ahead, where can you improve . Mark the restructuring is over, we are back in growth mode. The platform feels like its in terrific shape. We have invested in the business both through banking and m a. Is allhasis we have had about execution and client service. Here thinkinging we are done. We have a Fourth Quarter, we have a lot of work to do, but we like our position right now. Alex where exactly do you see strength for the rest of the year, do you see other large deals getting announced for the end of the calendaryear . August was a very big month for north america. As you know, the biggest market by far. August was off relative to july, but i think it does feel this is not in the data but it feels like things are picking up a bit. We announced a couple of large defense and aerospace deals. The pipeline is good, business feels good. That is notwithstanding a lot of the headwinds around valuation, the Macro Economic environment. Does feel to me and im usually one of the more conservative guys on the street that it is feeling better. Alex give me a sector or two that feels strong right now. Mark [indiscernible] tech is off 35 this year. Communications are up in a good way. Alex are you saying the same categories will be strong . Mark things could change on a dime. Nevertheless, those are the places. Health care is up pretty nicely. Industrials, which is the biggest segment of the market, is down 18 . With industrials and tech down, two of the top four industries this year, still a pretty good performance, notwithstanding everything i said. Alex one major deal would be sprint, tmobile. From a general perspective, does that deal get through this time around . Because im not around, it would be hard to speculate. You had a deal that did not go through so years ago. It is hard for me to speculate. I know no more than you do. In some respects, you may know more. It will be interesting to see if the wireless deal gets done, is it a Tipping Point for other transactions that have been molest much left in the wireless space, but cable. Shafir, citigroup cohead of global m a, thanks for joining us. Shery thank you. Vonnie coming up, the apple iphone 8 and other products have people lined up, but suppliers are not dealing the excitement. Shery welcome back. This is Bloomberg Markets. Im shery ahn. Vonnie im vonnie quinn. It is time for the stock of the hour. Shares of trip advisor. There is Abigail Doolittle to tell us why. This Online TravelResearch Company taking a hit. Comments from raymond james, bearish to cautious comments. One analyst is saying until this Company Figures out how to monetize this trend, the stock will remain range bound. Theave a chart that shows range, the stock not able to get out of its way, down 15 on the year. Now down on this plunge. Behind that lack of ability to ,onetize, the analyst is saying lack of competitive threats. Other travel companies are down as well in sympathy. Lots of red for the Online Travel space. Shery shares are down 60 from the peak. How can the company on lock value for shareholders . Interesting work from one of our analysts. He says the company could be worth more for the parts than the sum. The enterprise value is basically a takeover valuation. 5 billion. Valuation could be worth 6. 1 billion, several different pieces. Worthe the advertising 4. 1 billion. That is when consumers who are on trip advisor click through to expedia, priceline. Hotels, not hotels. The interesting thing about this, in my conversation with the analyst, it doesnt someone that there are activist investors involved, so perhaps that something for the future. On depending there is a pretty big Short Interest here, too, so perhaps many are not surprised by the decline. Last week, people lined up outside of apple store to get their hands on the iphone it in the latest versions of the apple watch and tv, but that excitement is not translating to the company suppliers. The company which assembles the iphone and other devices has fallen as much as 10 . Company has plunged more than 12 as well. You can also see that on the terminal on the bloomberg. Splcy chain analysis,. Also seeing some declines in japanese stocks. To your left, those are the suppliers. What could because in the slump . Apple has are poorly told suppliers to delay part of their shipments for the production of the iphone x device. Joining me now from San Francisco to discuss all of this is alex webb, who covers all things apple. What can we think about these reports, that apple wants fewer s, isy from these companie this lack of confidence about future sales . Alex i think that is maybe how the market is interpreting but that is not the case. Apple does not like to have vast amounts of inventory. The controls that tightly. You could infer, is there only ing for 40 , we knew going into the cycle that there would be problems getting oled, the new screens. The supply of that is still strained, that means the rest of the components that they need for the phone, they dont need it as quickly. It could be a number of things. Vonnie wethe saw a little slack demand for the 8. Alex yes, but it is hard to gauge what extent that is for the demand for the x. And analyst suggested that not only is there demand for the x, but some people who want to buy that it will wait to see the x first to see if it is worth getting the extra 300. So that demand may still be coming in the next quarter. Are seeing shorter queues for the phone, is that a reflection of less demand, or they are being more efficient when it comes to the lines . Alex they are being more efficient when getting people to pay monthly fees, so they get the iphone preordered. The Apple Upgrade Program is what it is called. That is something that of alexa do because they can predict their revenue over an extended period, giving them more accuracy in the forecast. Of course, they dont get the significant queues that they used to have in days of your. Is trying to bring in house as much as it can. When are we going to see that reflected in numbers, data, prognostications for demand . Alex in terms of what they are bringing in, a lot is semiconductor stuff, which means it increases the demand on the phone. It allows a to come up with software which is dependent on the hardware. That is something that they hope will drive demand for the iphone in subsequent generations. If you have a faster processor in the phone, you can do things with the software. Therefore, the old phone you have becomes out of date and you have to upgrade. That is the upshot from these r d investments. Possibly some smart glasses coming up, that is the one that everyone is hoping for. Apple in the past has investigated products and then abandon them, so lets see what surfaces. Shery you also have to look at the supply chain. These are Asian Companies that rely heavily heavily on apple demand. Comes to these asian markets that are heavily exposed to these few companies. What does it mean for asia . X it is something that apple has built up a deep supply chain, particularly these hubs in shenzhen. These companies have massive exposure, so they invest heavily to ensure they are in future products. Apple is still trying to bring some manufacturing capacity to the u. S. You have seen that foxconn will build a display plant. We are not sure if that is related to apple. The more they can do that, the more they can get into good books of the president. Shery alex webb, joining us on apple. The Restructuring Plan ends the Company Separate division commercial and consumer businesses. We are joined now for more on the story. He is effectively going to divide the company into three of whats, which is sort carl icahn wanted, he wanted a spinoff but three Different Companies. Is this an up limitation of that model . I wouldnt say so. Right after the annual meeting , we reported, that he is on board with a plan to not put up the insurer but expand it. This restructuring puts some units together in interesting ways. Before, different insurance units were in different places. The life and retirement ceo was overseeing some personal businesses. At aig isw deputy overseeing all of the general insurance and the which means commercial clients, which can mean personal clients. Kevin hogan will be overseeing life and retirement businesses, which is inherently a different business from home and auto insurance. Shery is this a push back to what the former ceo had done . This is a big pivot. The ceo of the commercial unit is stepping down next month. He was put in place by peter hancock. Peter had made all of these executive changes, and a lot of them have left. A lot of the general counsel has left. Now what is in place, a lot of people that brian used to work with before in different units. General insurance, life and retirement, and then this Standalone Technology platform. What is that . Hashe Insurance Industry been struggling for a long time with learning how to implement technology into new platforms. Ryan will be leading that. She works with brian at hamilton insurance, backed by its evils of two sigma. New have been working with tech enabled platforms, so itll be interesting and exciting to see what comes out of that. Shery when can we expect this new structure to be implemented . Immediately. Shery will it be reflected on their Financial Reporting . We dont know yet. Financial reporting over the last few years, peter hancock, before he left, went further than splitting up aig into commercial and consumer units, and into nine different modules. Before we were looking at the reporting of all these entities. We will look at how they report this out. Vonnie hancocks scorecard . Do people think he did well . He was there for seven years, seven chief executive officers since greenberg. He was pretty much the longest. Something that was interesting, he had a unique circumstance. When he was in charge, john paulson was on the board, and so was a representative of carl icahn. He was pressured to split the company, now they are in growth mode. These are two Different Companies we are dealing with. Some thing that was interesting, if you look at when icahn came into the stock, 21 paulson left, they didnt the stock wasnt really up. It may have been down a little bit in that time. Vonnie fascinating story, the aig story. Thank you. Shery still ahead, can President Trump deliver on his promise of tax reform .
