But it is a faster rate. Jeb bush has raised an average of 700,000 per day, and hillary at 562,500 per day. Does this mean jeb bush will end up being the overall champion of fundraising or is he just getting low hanging fruit . Al i dont care where this hangs, this is awesome fruit. Both the super pac number is extraordinary and a personal number. Only 16 days. Dick gephardt says that there will be money but jeb bush wont run out of money. Part of the purpose in raising this was to drive other candidates out of the field and scare them off, this didnt work. That hasnt worked, obviously. The major candidates like rubio walker, will be fully committed if competitive in the first four caucuses. If jeb doesnt win one of the caucuses, that money advantage will be a lot less impressive. Mark i will say two things, my caveat is that some of the super pac donors have been restricted to the size of the checks that they have written. Two 1 million. I suspect the super pac take will continue to swell even though he will not be able to make contribution some cell. The second thing is that i think this will go into may be april or may, but i suspect that bush and his super pac will be one or one of the few that can go the distance of the thing does go a long. Al yeah, i agree. It will be much harder. The only way another candidate will go long is if he or she wins one of those early contests and in the sugar daddies kick in. Mark and another thing about the bush numbers is that we will see if he can keep it up. The rate that we see. I thought earlier in the year it was a mistake in the sense that he was traveling around the country doing super pac funding, and now he is going to have to go back to those same places and raise hard earned dollars. But i suspect there is a network in place, and bush, like his brother wont have to attend , nearly as many as fundraisers as others. The ordinary candidate needs to go sit at a dinner. I suspect that jeb bush is going to collect a lot of money without having to be there which is a big bush advantage. Ok, there is a thing in politics called a freak show. Let me give you an example. The president says something president ial candidate says something imprecisely and then everyone jumps on it. In todays episode here is what , gaffeman jeb bush said. In order to grow the economy people need to work longer hours. Here is the full context of what he said. Jeb bush my aspiration for the country, and i think we can achieve it is 4 of growth as , far as the eye can see, which means we have to be a lot more productive and it has to rise from its alltime modern lows. It means people need to work longer hours and productivity gains will increase. Mark i said gaffeman, and i was kidding, of course, that wasnt a gaffe. Not surprisingly, liberals and democrats jumped all over bush. The media that its a freak show apart and made a big deal. Surprisingly though somebody , else jumped on jeb bush. Ted cruzs spokesman said this. It would seem to me that jeb bush would want to avoid comments about the economic struggles that americans are facing. The problem is not that americans are not working hard enough, it is that the career politicians special interests and lobbyists have written the game against them. Advocates of gop on gop violence. Does it say more about ted cruzs campaign or about jeb bushs . Al i actually think that jeb bush did make a gaffe here. Economists can disagree about the key points here, but i think putting it the way here just plays to the image of a very rich, familyconnected guy telling the average citizen that he has to work harder. I think it will come back to haunt jeb bush. Mark i think it will, but not because he made a gaffe, i just disagree. I agree that the optics, the narrative, not great for him. But i just think for our political culture, people just need to be more forgiving. The cruise thing is fascinating because they actively were trying to take down jeb bush and make him an old candidate, and i think this episode says more about bush then others. He is a classic frontrunner and he is going to take a lot of punches. Everyone wants him to take on that dialogue. Al and ted cruz loves the punch. Lets turn to donald trump. He is taking his dues as well, speaking of punching. Today was the second celebrity chef to say no to trunk. This is because his inflammatory comments about mexicans. And he has got the ear of the establishment. Yesterday the Washington Post reported that Reince Priebus said he needs to tone down his inflammatory comments. But today trump called the Washington Post to set the record straight claiming it was the rnc chairman that was congratulatory. Although he conceded he was told to tone it down little bit. Meanwhile, john mccain says that his comments were offensive. If the Mainstream Republican Party wants to control him, can they . Mark easiest question. No they cannot. Priebus called because he is under a lot of pressure, but in terms of these debates, trump plays by his own rules and i think it is going to take as i , wrote on bloombergpolitics. Com today, it is going to take another heavyweight to take him on or he will continue to do what he wants to do on a range of issues. The fact that he wants to go to arizona to give a speech on immigration does not indicate he will tone it down. That he will turn it down. Al you know, mark, i dont think his malicious comments about immigrants are going to hurt the Republican Party about a year from now. People are going to be talking about a lot of other things. I predict like most bullies, he will cower and eventually allow. But i think he is playing the pull out. But i think he is playing the race card. This is what he did with the birther issue and i think that hurts the country. Mark in the end, i think one of the things that will tell here is the poll numbers. As long as he is one of the leaders nationally in the key states, he is going to be harder to deal with and a lot harder for the press to ignore. If his numbers go down, then i think we will put what he says in perspective. He will be able to dominate as much. We will see how his poll numbers do. Al yeah, i dont think he is a serious person and i think he has done great harm with these comments. Im wondering if you think that the comments are in fact bad for the Republican Party brand and image. Fmr. Gov. Pataki they certainly dont help the party, but as you were pointing out earlier, donald trump is donald trump. If people dont embrace that position, if they reject it unequivocally as i did, then i think people are going to look at the candidate as an individual when it comes to next november. Mark you are a former governor of new york and i am just wondering if it comes down to you and mr. Trump or accept his offer to debate oneonone, what are the differences between you and donald trump . Fmr. Gov. Pataki he runs businesses, and i ran a major government, and politics is very different from the private sector. It is very different than investing in other peoples money. You have to lead, create consensus. You have to deal with those who disagree with you and try to bring them along and it is about results. I am very proud of the results i had as governor, both winning three times, but more importantly, changing the direction of the state. Mark before we move on, i just want to ask one of the question. Other question. You and others have been critical on his position on his statements of emigration. Are there other aspects of trumps records or statements that you would take issue with . Fmr. Gov. Pataki i am not interested in getting in a fight with donald trump. We always got along great. That his comments about mexicans were just not just unacceptable, they were really repulsive. As the grandson of immigrants. We have to understand, we all have a future. One of the things you do in politics or that you should do is to try to bring people together instead of trying to divide them. I want people to have a sense of identity as americans, and not as different groups that we like or we dont like. Al governor, it is al hunt here, will fox and cnn proceed with only the top 10 in the main debate, and you are not and you are not that top 10, would you participate in the kiddie table debate and what would you get out of it . [laughter] fmr. Gov. Pataki i am not excited about the kiddie table the Manchester Union leader said they will host a debate i believe the day before. I do intend to attend that. But i will tell you, august 6 is not what matters. What matters is november. Whatever we are, whatever happens a few weeks from now, that doesnt concern me. You fight hard and you make the case to the American People. It is not where you start where you are in november. Mark are you in iowa al would you mark i am sorry, al, go ahead. Al would you be in the second debate . Fmr. Gov. Pataki i would hope to have the opportunity. As mark pointed out, i got elected three times in one of the bluest states in america. I governed that state successfully and left it in its best financial position and its best economic and lowest unemployment ever, so i am proud to talk about that record and my vision for america and i hope i have the opportunity. Mark governor, i want to move from your day in iowa, but you would only participate in the event debate with the top 10 candidates, so you wouldnt participate in the other debates . Fmr. Gov. Pataki lets wait and see. I havent been approached about that. Well have to see how it is structured. Im not inclined to doing that but im not going to roll it out. Mark ok, in iowa, when you talked to voters today, what are the three issues that voters brought up to you . Fmr. Gov. Pataki well, because of donald trump, people are talking about immigration quite a bit, quite a bit. One part of Donald Trumps analysis is something i agree with, and that is closing the control the border and do everything we can to seal it. But that doesnt mean we have to say things about the vast majority of mexicans. The second is economy. For all of the unemployment numbers, there is just a tremendous sense of too many people are not earning enough and people are not having enough economic futures. The other would be having security against isis. We just went through the fourth of july and thankfully nothing happened. I think there is an awareness that we are at risk of attacks here in america. In my view, the better biggest risk since september 11. Al governor, what would you say about the latest numbers from jeb bush today . Fmr. Gov. Pataki i am not sure what he announced. Ive been out on the road. Al 114 million within the campaign. Fmr. Gov. Pataki thats fine im not surprised. From the beginning we knew he would have the organization and dances and resources. Lets see what happens between now and next november. Mark governor, as we go forward here in this big field, it is obviously unpredictable, is there a chance for you to advance from the back of the pack to the top . Fmr. Gov. Pataki absolutely that is why i am doing this, i believe in my vision for america, i believe the people want someone who is not going to look to divide the American People for american benefit, but unite them for the publics benefit, someone who doesnt just talk about reducing the size of the government and reducing public dependency. I want somebody who can do that and i have done that. If i were in washington, i want to be someone who can win the race, and i know i can do that and i know that after i would win, we could change the direction of washington, even with a difficult congress. I know i could do that. Sure, i dont mind starting at the end, but i do mind finishing at the end. Im going to fight as hard as i can to be at the top. And the types of electorate they have had to woo. Here to tell us about this is ken goldstein. Thanks for joining us, ken. They all make some strong president ial candidates. Ken we are going to start out with the states that republicans win, like the mountain states, texas. Democrats are going to win california and new york. Republicans have to win the lions share of purple states. So you have to look at the candidates coming from purple states. Jeb Bush John Mccain to marco , rubio, and say, hey, these guys have one of purple states isnt there a chance they could win these purple states . No, but thanks for setting me up. The when is much more important than the where. Remember john edwards ran for president , a couple of things happened . Before that, he talked about two americas . There really is two americas when we talk about elections the primary elections in the maternal actions. Midterm election electorates. All of the folks who won the purple states in general in midterm electorates, they have never faced the voters who decide president ial elections. Al you are making the assumptions then that the general election turnout will be more like 2008, 2012, rather than 2004. Ken i am, and even if we dont think that democrats are going to be able to replicate the electorate, which was naturally nationally plus 6, 7, 8 democratic, it is going to be more democratic than the even electorate. Scott walker in wisconsin, when he won in 2010 and the recall in 2012, and reelection in 2014 the wisconsin electorate were equally divided. Democrats republicans and independents. When obama was winning in 2008 and 2012, it was plus 7 or plus 8. Democratic. Al and case it one huge in 2014 but that was against a weak opponent. I know my colleague Mark Halperin has some other questions to ask you. Mark ken, thanks, people can read through what you went through with al on bloomberg. Com, and i want to talk about something you have been talking about all week and that is advertising and fundraising. John kasich is going to stay safe spending 1 million in the next couple of weeks, and how impactful can that Million Dollars be at this point given that there are not a lot of other political ads on the air and they have to raise a National Number . Ken i think that is the key point that you just said. First of all, i am a little skeptical about whether these ads will actually air, but the more important part is that john kasich needs to be in the top 10 and to be in the debate. What i am looking for is that even though the logic of the nomination process says to spend money in iowa, spent money in a new hampshire, or even nevada, because foxnews is only going to take the top 10, i wonder if we are going to see National Advertising and a primary election, which is something we have never really seen before . But if folks may try to gain those polls about who is going to be in those top 10, the folks that are going to be answering the poll of the National Republican primary. Mark jeb bush has almost 100 million still in the bank. One way is super pac is deficient is you dont get what a campaign gets. How impactful besides of that disadvantage be for jeb bush . As opposed from a super pac to a campaign . Ken you are absolutely right, super pac dollars are less valuable than campaign dollars. Best candidate dollars. Groups will sometimes take two or three or four times the amount candidates pay for the exact same ad. That said, 100 million is an awful lot of money. Jeb bush may win this rate, jeb race jeb bush may lose this , race. He is not going to lose this race because he is going to run out of money, though. Mark quickly, we see reports of marco rubio buying ad time for a way down in the future. Is that a good idea to buy all of that space way in the future . Ken one of the most meaningless things to Pay Attention to is that. I could call the tv stations right now and by the hunthalperin Campaign Space right now. I would not have to put any dollars down.
