BLO reinvents opera for streaming series ‘Desert in’

People don’t usually discover opera while working on a film crew during a pandemic at a motor lodge in the California desert. A year ago, Boston Lyric Opera’s acting general and artistic director Bradley Vernatter certainly didn’t picture himself as part of a team outside Palm Springs filming a mini-series made by opera stars and neophytes.
“On set, it was the first time some people had ever heard an opera singer sing live, and she was 15 feet away from them,” Vernatter said with a laugh. “It’s not typically how you hear the opera voice for the first time.”
