here at Southern Research in Birmingham. These young ladies are getting a taste of the aviation world this week. They are participating in a drone academy. It's centered around science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We learn how to do different um design processes with engineering. Like we designed our drone this week, we had to measure all of the different parts like the propellers, the batteries, kumari mars. It is a rising senior at Ramsey High School. She and these other young ladies are part of a group called Girls inc. The group provides mentorships and they fight for opportunities and rights for all girls. This week they're learning how to build drones are first prototype didn't work because our motors didn't reach like the battery pack And our motives actually didn't even fit in like the center. So we had to keep tweaking it to make sure that it wasn't too big. The girls are learning computer aided design, 30, printing, electronic soldering. It's a part of the process of building the drone. They're solving real world problems here by going through the design process, they're figuring out what works with their drone design. What doesn't Um, what makes it fly? Is it too heavy? Is it to light funding from the state and other partners made this week possible, Joseph Holland is with E3 aviation girls, inc has a summer camp. And uh, the three aviation was allowed to design that summer camp in the aviation based capacity. And when we got to Wednesday, we asked Southern Research to tell us or come and uh show the girls about drones and they wanted more time. So we uh in there since backtracked and said that we'll do the whole week with the drone academy. And that's how Brianna Brown arising, ninth grader at Clay chalk ville High School ended up here at Southern Research. Talk about the challenges with this. You know, it's not meant to be easy, you know, it's a thinking process to talk about it. Um, you could, you, there's like a lot of cautions, like you can almost burn yourself with the copper and stuff. Um, there are a lot of electrical and wiring that you're going to have to be careful with or you might make a spark and your work so is, you have to, it's kind of complex, but you have to watch what you're doing. The girls will compete in drone, racist and obstacle courses, showing off their skills and education in Birmingham. I'm fred davenport. Yeah.
