“They’re beautiful dogs, and have such a nice temperament,” Chisnall, who owns a four-year-old leonberger.
“They’re especially good to take on long trips into the outdoors.”

The Gentle Giant Walk was held at Centennial Park on Sunday and Callum Sandri, 10, and Olivia Gilmour, 5, with Greta, took part.
Chisnall said it was lovely to meet other peoples’ dogs on Sunday, and hoped a similar event in Timaru could be held in the near future.
“If you want to be an owner of one of these big dogs, you need to go through the right breeders, as they know what they’re doing. They’re wonderful animals, but they are also pretty high maintenance, so training, training, and training is vital,” she said.
