► Everything from a budget SUV to V8-engined estate
► We’ll keep this list updated
Once upon a time, a family car probably meant a Ford Cortina – perhaps even a Granada if your dad met his sales targets. Now, it might be an SUV instead of a three-box saloon, a premium badge instead of a mainstream one, an electric motor instead of a petrol engine. It might well be mum buying the car, too.
With no much choice, it's no wonder the Ford Mondeo – grandson of the Cortina – is soon for the chop. People still require a practical car for school runs, Sunday outings and summer holidays, but the one-size-fits-all approach no longer works. That's why we've made this list as diverse as the market itself.
