Sydney – AFP
Australian Foreign Minister Maryse Payne announced, Friday, that Australian professor and writer of Chinese descent Yang Jun will be tried in China for espionage next week after he spent more than two years in detention. Yang Jun is one of two well-known Australians being held in China on charges of spying in an atmosphere of escalating tension between Canberra and Beijing.
In a statement, Payne said that the trial of the Chinese-born writer who became Australian and is known by his pen name Yang Heng Jun will begin Thursday. “Despite repeated requests by Australian officials, the Chinese authorities have not provided any explanation or evidence for the charges against Dr. Yang,” she added.
